Minimization of Cell-based Handoff Delays to Balance the Load in Fiber Optic Micro-cellular Systems
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 1~11
This paper considers the scheduling of cell-based handoffs to balance the traffic in a fiber-optic microcelluar system. In the system depending on the order of cell based handoff, periodical balancing of the traffic among microcells can be achieved. The cell based handoff problem is formulated as a dynamic programming and the computational complexity is analyzed. Since the scheduling problem requires real time solution, heuristic algorithms are proposed and the computational results are discussed.
A Survey: SDP, its Duality, Complexity and Applications
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 13~46
SDP (Semidefinite Programming), as a sort of “cone-LP”, optimizes a linear function over the intersection of an affine space and a cone that has the origin as its apex. SDP, however, has been developed in the process of searching for better solution methods for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. We surveyed the basic theories necessary to understand SDP researches. First, We examined SDP duality, comparing it to LP duality, which is essential for the interior point method, Second, we showed that SDP can be optimized from an interior solution in polynomial time with a desired error limit. finally, we summarized several research papers that showed SDP can improve solution methods for some combinatorial optimization problems, and explained why SDP has become one of the most important research topics in optimization. We tried to integrate SDP theories. relatively diverse and complicated. to survey research papers with our own perspective, and thus to help researcher to pursue their SDP researches in depth.
Development of Evolutionary Algorithms for Determining the k most Vital Arcs in Shortest Path Problem
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 47~58
The purpose of this study is to present methods for determining the k most vital arcs (k-MVAs) in shortest path problem (SPP) using evolutionary algorithms. The problem of finding the k-MVAs in SPP is to find a set of k arcs whose simultaneous removal from the network causes the greatest increase in the shortest distance between two specified nodes. Generally, the problem of determining the k-MVAs in SPP has been known as NP-hard. Therefore, to deal with problems of the real world, heuristic algorithms are needed. In this study we present three kinds of evolutionary algorithms for finding the k-MVAs in SPP, and then to evaluate the performance of proposed algorithms.
A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Job Shop Scheduling
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 59~68
The job shop scheduling problem is not only NP-hard, but is one of the well known hardest combinatorial optimization problems. The goal of this research is to develop an efficient scheduling method based on hybrid genetic algorithm to address job shop scheduling problem. In this scheduling method, generating method of initial population, new genetic operator, selection method are developed. The scheduling method based on genetic algorithm are tested on standard benchmark job shop scheduling problem. The results were compared with another genetic algorithm0-based scheduling method. Compared to traditional genetic, algorithm, the proposed approach yields significant improvement at a solution.
Batch Scheduling of Incompatible Job Families with Sequence Independent Setup Times
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 69~83
The problem of minimizing total tardiness on a batch processing machine with incompatible job families when there are sequence independent setup times between families is studied where all jobs of the same family have identical processing times and jobs of different families cannot be processed together. A batch processing machine can process a number of jobs, within a maximal batch size, simultaneously as a batch. The processing time required of each batch is equal to the one of jobs. A dynamic programming algorithm which gives the optimal solution, and several heuristics are presented. Performance of simple dispatching rules based on due dates are compared, and the best of them is used as an initial solution for the decomposition algorithm, which is shown to give good schedules in relatively short computational time.
An Exploratory Investigation Of Player Loyalty To Online Games
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 85~97
Online games have become the focus of entertainment and multimedia industries as the developments in computer technologies are accelerated and the use of the Internet diffuses broadly. In spite of such growth of online games, academic discussions regarding online games are relatively limited. This research examines several factors that affect player loyalty to online games. In this research, the loyalty is classified into two categories, the behavioral loyalty measured by the intensity, volume, and frequency of use, and the cognitive loyalty measured by the degree of immersion in online games. In this research, an integrated model to explain and predict player loyalty to online games in proposed. Two studies are conducted to test to research model. Throughout analyzing 334 respondents, the first study finds that the impulsive personality of individual players significantly affects both behavioral loyalty and cognitive loyalty. Additionally, it finds that, whereas the behavioral loyalty is influenced by the convenience of online game playing, the cognitive loyalty is influenced by the motive of game playing and the playfulness of games. The second study finds that the behavioral loyalty differs across demographic differences of players (age and occupation), preferred online games of players, and online game playing locations, but the cognitive loyalty differs across only age differences of players. This research has opened a forum for social awareness about the online game culture, provided information to guide online game producers to prepare customer-oriented online games, and created a foundation for academic research on online game industry.
A SD approach to the Efficiency Improvement of Electric Power Industry in Korea: Focused on the Nuclear Industry
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 99~109
In this study, we tried to build a model which can deal with the efficient and effective operation of electric power industry, especially focused on the nuclear industry. Here, SD (System Dynamics) approach is used to visualize the underlying phenomenon of the nuclear power industry. SD is a methodology for studying and managing complex feedback systems, such as one finds in business and other social systems. The spend of SD applications has grown extensively and now encompasses work in corporate planning and policy design, public management and policy, biological and medical modeling, energy and the environment. Recently, according to the report from KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), they are considering delaying a new power plant construction. It may be based upon business fluctuation downsized from Korean economic crisis in 1997 and freezing of construction funds due to unstable foreign exchange rate. At this point, we need disparately a kind of strategic model that would contribute to cope with the current business situation, energy generation, production, and resulting pollution. Specifically, this model, using SD approach, starts with the detailed drawing of influence diagram, which describes those relevant key points on nuclear power generation systems in electric power industry of Korea. These include such factors as the operation of nuclear industry and parameters related to the decision making for business policy. Based upon the above-mentioned influence diagram drawn, we developed SD simulation model to evaluate and analyze strategic management of KEPCO. Based on our analysis, we could demonstrate how simulation model can be applied to the real electric power generation in Korea.
The Relationships between Market Orientation, Organizational Service Orientation, and Performance
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 26, issue 2, 2001, Pages 111~130
This study aims to examine the difference between market orientation, organizational service orientation, performances (employee satisfactions and business performances) across the type of hotel grade, and investigate the effect on performances of market orientation, organizational service orientation, and interaction of these two factors. For these purposes the authors developed 13 research proposals. The data for this research which were collected from Korean hotel firms’ managers and employees were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, regression analysis. The findings can be summarized as follows. First, five-star hotels display higher levels of market orientation, organizational service orientation, performance (employee satisfaction, business performance) than four-star and three-star hotels. Second, market orientation, organizational service orientation, and interaction of these two variables have significant effects on performances(employee satisfaction, business performance).
