Persistence of Information Systems (IS) Sourcing Relationship: An Event-Time Survival Analysis

This study attempts to understand factors influencing the persistence of companie's outsourcing arrangements using the techniques of survival analysis. It provides an insight into the dynamics of outsourcing relationships between clients and vendors. This is particularly relevant considering that current IS sourcing arrangements are strategic and long term, and require close interdependent relationships between the client and the vendor.
Quality Design Support System based on Data Mining Approach

Quality design in practice highly depends on human designer's intuition and past experiences due to lack of formal knowledge about the relationship among 10 variables. This paper represents an data mining approach for developing quality design support system that integrates Case Based Reasoning (CBR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to effectively support all the steps in quality design process. CBR stores design cases in a systematic way and retrieve them quickly and accurately. ANN predicts the resulting quality attributes of design alternatives that are generated from CBR's adaptation process. When the predicted attributes fail to meet the target values, quality design simulation starts to further adapt the alternatives to the customer's new orders. To implement the quality design simulation, this paper suggests (1) the data screening method based on ξ-
Ball to obtain the robust ANN models from the large production data bases, (2) the procedure of quality design simulation using ANN and (3) model management system that helps users find the appropriate one from the ANN model base. The integration of CBR and ANN provides quality design engineers the way that produces consistent and reliable design solutions in the remarkably reduced time.
Design of Sampling Inspections and Service Capacities for Multi-Products

In this paper, we study the joint design of sampling inspections and service capacities for multi-products. Products of different defect rates which are either deterministic or random variables are supplied in batches after sampling inspection and rework. When supplied, all defective products that have not been inspected in batches are uncovered through total inspection and returned to service. We identify the optimal inspection policies and service capacities for multi-products reflecting the relationships between inspection rework costs and service provision costs. We also develope a marginal allocation algorithm for the optimal allocation of the limited total service capacity to products as well as inspection quantities.
Biased-Recovering Algorithm to Solve a Highly Correlated Data System

In many multiple regression analyses, the “multi-collinearity” problem arises since some independent variables are highly correlated with each other. Practically, the Ridge regression method is often adopted to deal with the problems resulting from multi-collinearity. We propose a better alternative method using iteration to obtain an exact least squares estimator. We prove the solvability of the proposed algorithm mathematically and then compare our method with the traditional one.
Modeling and Performance Analysis of Zone-Based Registration Considering Cell by Cell Expansion of Location Area

An efficient mobility management for mobile stations plays an important role in mobile communication networks. Even though many a mobility management schemes have been proposed, most of mobile communication networks adopt the mobility scheme based on zone-based registration. This paper studies the mobility management scheme that combines zone-based registration and 2-step selective paging. We assume cell by cell registration area, not ring by ring registration area of previous studies, and set up a new mobility model based on 2-dimensional random walk model considering the characteristic of zone-based registration to evaluate its performance exactly. We provide numerical results using proposed model to demonstrate the performance of zone-based registration and 2-step selective paging under various circumstances.
Utilization of Forecasting Accounting Earnings Using Artificial Neural Networks and Case-based Reasoning: Case Study on Manufacturing and Banking Industry

The financial statements purpose to provide useful information to decision-making process of business managers. The value-relevant information, however, embedded in the financial statement has been often overlooked in Korea. In fact, the financial statements in Korea have been utilized for nothing but account reports to Security Supervision Boards (SSB). The objective of this study is to develop earnings forecasting models through financial statement analysis using artificial intelligence (AI). AI methods are employed in forecasting earnings: artificial neural networks (ANN) for manufacturing industry and case~based reasoning (CBR) for banking industry. The experimental results using such AI methods are as follows. Using ANN for manufacturing industry records 63.2% of hit ratio for out-of-sample, which outperforms the logistic regression by around 4%. The experiment through CBR for banking industry shows 65.0% of hit ratio that beats the statistical method by 13.2% in holdout sample. Finally, the prediction results for manufacturing industry are validated through monitoring the shift in cumulative returns of portfolios based on the earning prediction. The portfolio with the firms whose earnings are predicted to increase is designated as best portfolio and the portfolio with the earnings-decreasing firms as worst portfolio. The difference between two portfolios is about 3% of cumulative abnormal return on average. Consequently, this result showed that the financial statements in Korea contain the value-relevant information that is not reflected in stock prices.
A Influence of Information Technology Infrastructure to Business Process and Organizational Performance

This research shows that as the use of IT spreads, the Investments of IT must be accompanied by the innovation of the business process of an organization to increase productivity. It examines closely to the relations between these by presenting a theoretical formula, with related-theories at the basis, that shows the characteristics of IT Infrastructure and heightens the results of organization. In previous researches, various results co-exist in presenting the direct relativeness between IT Infrastructure and results of organization. But in this research, a parameter called business process has been included making it possible to analyze even the indirect effects to the results of organization. Also, the difference and relativity between the IT Infrastructure and business process groups according to the company environment factor has been proved.
Fire Sequencing Problem with Shared Targets

Fire Sequencing Problem (FSP) is to find a sequence of targets, where there exist a number of targets with different time units required to fire. Because of the weapon's specifications and the size of the targets, several weapons may fire on the same targets, and the time units required on firing for each weapon may be different from each other. The objective is to minimize the completion time of firing for given number of targets. Mathematical formulation is given, and the heuristic algorithm based on the paring of targets in advance is suggested. Performance of the heuristic is evaluated by comparison of heuristic appeared in the literature through the computational experiments.
A Study on the Development of Internet Purchase Support Systems Based on Data Mining and Case-Based Reasoning

In this paper we introduce the Internet-based purchase support systems using data mining and case-based reasoning (CBR). Internet Business activity that involves the end user is undergoing a significant revolution. The ability to track users browsing behavior has brought the vendor and end customer's closer than ever before. It is now possible for a vendor to personalize his product message for individual customers at massive scale. Most of former researchers, in this research arena, used data mining techniques to pursue the customer's future behavior and to improve the frequency of repurchase. The area of data mining can be defined as efficiently discovering association rules from large collections of data. However, the basic association rule-based data mining technique was not flexible. If there were no inference rules to track the customer's future behavior, association rule-based data mining systems may not present more information. To resolve this problem, we combined association rule-based data mining with CBR mechanism. CBR is used in reasoning for customer's preference searching and training through the cases. Data mining and CBR-based hybrid purchase support mechanism can reflect both association rule-based logical inference and case-based information reuse. A Web-log data gathered in the real-world Internet shopping mall is given to illustrate the quality of the proposed systems.
An Exploratory Study on The Factors Affecting BPO(Business Process Outsourcing) Performance of Domestic Firms: Focused on Knowledge Intensity and Degree of Informatization of Business Process

With the increase of global competition and the reduction of the lifecycle of business process, most leading companies begin to adopt BPO(Business Process Outsourcing), by outsourcing the whole or part of their business process to external service providers and focusing on their core capability, in order to enhance their core competency, In adopting BPO, it is an important decision-making issue that which part of process should be outsourced. So identifying core/non-core process among the business processes is a prerequisite for managing corporate capability and performance of outsourcing. In this study, by focusing on knowledge intensity and degree of informatization of the business process that are important factors in adopting BPO, we have analyzed the current status of BPO adoption of domestic firms and proposed several guidelines for adopting BPO.
Channel Access Control Method for the CDMA Packet Service System

In the IS-95 packet service system, the radio channels are generally classified into the dedicated and the common traffic channels. In this paper, a common traffic channel access method is proposed for the COMA packet service system to enhance the radio resource utilization while guaranteeing QoS to the users. The proposed method is based on the permission probability for the common traffic channel user. To derive permission probability, optimization models are developed for two different QoS constraints. Approximation methods are also developed.
