An Applied Study of the AHP on the Selection of Nonmemory Semiconductor Chip
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 1~13
Despite that the semiconductor industry plays an important role to our economy, it has abnormal industrial structure stressing too much on memory chips. Thus, it is essential for our corporate to develop nonmemory chips to obtain technological leadership in a highly competitive semiconductor market. In this study, we demonstrate how benefit/cost analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy process (AHP) can be used for the proper selection of nonmemory semiconductor chips: Microprocessor, ASIC, digital IC and Analogue IC. The final results show that ASIC is the most attractive chip to develop, followed by Analogue IC, digital IC and Microprocessor. This is Somewhat consistent with the information that we found with respect to the elements that were taken into consideration. Sensitivity analysis is also provided here.
A Study on the Quality Determinants in Management Consulting
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 15~28
This paper investigates the service quality determinants in management consulting. Quality dimensions in SERVQUAL research, as well as several dimensions specific to the consulting service, have been reviewed. A survey has been conducted by carefully developed questionnaires for the hypothesized eight quality dimensions. The results of the statistical analyses support the eight quality dimensions in the consulting service : reliability, assurance, responsiveness, empathy, ethics, participation, communication, and reputation. The results demonstrate that reliability, assurance, participation, and reputation are especially influential in determining customer satisfaction. The research results provide useful insights for a customer in assessing alternative service providers and foreseeing the outcome from the chosen consultants.
Pricing Real Options Value Based On the Opportunity Cost Concept
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 29~39
Traditionally, companies have been concerned with making an investment decision either to go now or never to go forever. However, owing to the development of the theory of options pricing in a financial investment field and its introduction to the appraisal of real investments in these days, we are now partially allowed to derive the value of a managerial flexibility of real investment projects. In this paper, we derived a general mathematical model to price the option value of real investment projects assuming that they have only one-period of time under which uncertainty exists. This mathematical model was developed based on the opportunity cost concept. We will show a simple numerical example to illustrate how the mathematical model works comparing it with the existing models.
Optimal Wave Source Position Determination Based on Wave Propagation Simulation
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 41~54
In this paper, we proposed a method to determine optimal wave source for mobile telephone communication. The approach is based on wave propagation simulation. Given a wave source we can determine wave propagation effects on every surfaces of wave simulation environment. The effect is evaluated as a cost function while the source’s position x, y, z work as variables for a parameter optimization. Wave propagated 3 dimensional space generates reflected waves whenever it hits boundary surface, it receives multiple waves which are reflected from various boundary surfacers in space. Three algorithms being implemented in this paper are based on a raytracing theory. If we get 3 dimensional geometry input as well as wave sources, we can compute wave propagation effects all over the boundary surfaces. In this paper, we present a new approach to compute wave propagation. First approach is tracing wave from a source. Source is modeled as a sphere casting vectors into various directions. This approach has limit in computing necessary wave propagation effects on all terrain surfaces. The second approach proposed is tracing wave backwards : tracing from a wave receiver to a wave source. For this approach we need to allocate a wave receiver on every terrain surfaces modeled, which requires enormous amount of computing time. But the second approach is useful for indoor wave propagation simulation. The last approach proposed in this paper is tracing sound by geometric computation. We allow direct, 1-relfe tion, and 2-reflection propagation. This approach allow us to save in computation time while achieving reasonable results. but due to the reflection limitaion, this approach works best in outdoor environment.
Evaluation of Virtual Shopping Malls Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 55~68
A virtual shopping mall is like a real-world mall, supports electronic shopping by selling products or services through Interne. Although increasing numbers of products are being marketed on the Web, little efforts has been spent on evaluating what mall is more suitable for marketing electronically and for protecting consumers. Evaluation of virtual shopping malls is regarded as a major task in business-to-consumer electronic commerce. This paper considers the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method in the evaluation of virtual shopping malls and provides its applications. The AHP is a systematic procedure for representing the elements of any problem, hierarchically. A series of pairwise comparison judgments is performed to express the relative strength or intensity of impact of the elements in the hierarchy. The AHP model hierarchy consists of the four following levels: decision maker, main criteria, sub-criteria, and virtual shopping malls. the main criteria include the state of physical firms, representation of information on the virtual shopping malls, product or service, convenience for shopping, consumer protection, and consumer service. The total number of sub-criteria in the third level is twenty-nine. All decision makers selected belong to virtual shopping mall enterprises, or universities. As a case study, we show the synthesized priority of the five virtual shopping malls that have acquired an E-Trust mark. Finally a sensitivity analysis shows how well each virtual shopping mall performs on each criterion by increasing or decreasing the importance of the main criteria.
Design and Implementation of a Micropayment Protocol in Electronic Commerce Environments
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 69~78
An electronic micropayment system, one of electronic payment systems, is suitable especially when a small amount of money is to be paid frequently in order to purchase on-line goods (i.e. database search, software distribution, electronic news service, etc). In addition, since the amount of payment is small, possible damages caused by system failures are lower than other payment system. In this paper, a micropayment protocol in electronic commerce environments on the Internet is proposed, based on the PayWord system. And a micropayment electronic commerce system which executes the protocol proposed is implemented. Unlike the PayWord system, however, the micropayment protocol proposed in this paper is designed in such a way that a merchant does not need to request a payment at the end of every business day since a customer cannot purchase goods beyond length of hash chains, which is specified on a certificate. In addition, the system is able to check the validity as well as the duplicate spending of hash chains. The electronic micropayment system with the proposed protocol is consists of Customers, Merchants, and Brokers. Customers are implemented on Windows NT 4.0 using VC++. Merchants are implemented on Solaris 2.5.1 and gcc 2.8.0 using Netscape Web Server and CGI Methods. HP UX 10.20 is used for Brokers.
The People Navigator : A New Collaboration Chatting Application
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 79~88
We often feel the necessity to communicate with members involved in a project to remote discuss business activities, needs for the fast file transfer, and check the existence of members to talk with. There are some commercial applications in these problems. However, in addition to those existing functions, this study focuses especially on adding couple of functions such as automatic responding function, in which a sender of a message automatically knows if a receiver checks the message. Its application is that a project leader sends an important message and later on can check at his desk the fact that who have checked their messages. The prototype application, build in this study, will check the correctness of every sub-function, and then the interface of inter-sub-functions, finally the integrity of the entire system, so that important information will not be lost among members of a project in the real world situation.
Linking Critical Success Factors, Implementation Attitudes and Performance of Cellular Manufacturing Systems
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 89~105
The performance of Cellular Manufacturing (CM) systems has been rigorously investigated during the last two decades, but the extent of empirical research on CM is limited. A major objective of this study is to examine the relationship between critical success factors, employees' implementation attitudes and performance of CM systems. Two hypothesis were formulated &d Tested: (1) The impact of critical success factors on performance and to what extent does certain critical success factors correlate with performance\ulcorner (2) How does the relationship between critical success factors and performance differ by employees' implementation attitudes\ulcorner Results from the study provide partial support for relationship between critical success factors (infrastructure, organizational immersion, autonomous management) and performance. The results also show that differences in performance of organizations grouped by degree of employees' attitudes could be found.
A Genetic Algorithm for Searching Shortest Path in Public Transportation Network
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 105~118
The common shortest path problem is to find the shortest route between two specified nodes in a transportation network with only one traffic mode. The public transportation network with multiple traffic mode is a more realistic representation of the transportation system in the real world, but it is difficult for the conventional shortest path algorithms to deal with. The genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to solve this problem. The objective function is to minimize the sum of total service time and total transfer time. The individual description, the coding rule and the genetic operators are proposed for this problem.
Structural Change Analysis in a Real Interest Rate Model
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 119~133
It is important to find the equilibrium level of real interest rate for it affects real and financial sector of economy. However, it is difficult to find the equilibrium level because like the most macroeconomic model the real interest model has parameter instability problem caused by structural change and it is supported by various theories and definitions. Hence, in order to cover these problems structural change detection model of real interest rate is developed to combine the real interest rate equilibrium model and the procedure to detect structural change points. 3 equations are established to find various effects of other interest-related macroeconomic variables and from each equation, structural changes are found. Those structural change points are consistent with common expectation. Oil Crisis (December, 1987), the starting point of Economic Stabilization Policy (January, 1982), the starting point of capital liberalization (January, 1988), the starting and finishing points of Interest deregulation (January, 1992 and December, 1994), Foreign Exchange Crisis (December, 1977) are detected as important points. From the equation of fisher and real effects, real interest rate level is estimated as 4.09% (October, 1988) and dependent on the underlying model, it is estimated as 0%∼13.56% (October, 1988), so it varies so much. It is expected that this result is connected to the large scale simultaneous equations to detect the parameter instability in real time, so induces the flexible economic policies.
Data-Mining in Business Performance Database Using Explanation-Based Genetic Algorithms
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 135~145
In recent environment of dynamic management, there is growing recognition that information and knowledge management systems are essential for efficient/effective decision making by CEO. To cope with this situation, we suggest the Data-Miming scheme as a key component of integrated information and knowledge management system. The proposed system measures business performance by considering both VA(Value-Added), which represents stakeholder’s point of view and EVA (Economic Value-Added), which represents shareholder’s point of view. To mine the new information & Knowledge discovery, we applied the improved genetic algorithms that consider predictability, understandability (lucidity) and reasonability factors simultaneously, we use a linear combination model for GAs learning structure. Although this model’s predictability will be more decreased than non-linear model, this model can increase the knowledge’s understandability that is meaning of induced values. Moreover, we introduce a random variable scheme based on normal distribution for initial chromosomes in GAs, so we can expect to increase the knowledge’s reasonability that is degree of expert’s acceptability. the random variable scheme based on normal distribution uses statistical correlation/determination coefficient that is calculated with training data. To demonstrate the performance of the system, we conducted a case study using financial data of Korean automobile industry over 16 years from 1981 to 1996, which is taken from database of KISFAS (Korea Investors Services Financial Analysis System).
A Proof of Transitivity of Job-Pair Comparison Rule to Minimize Total Tardiness in a Single Machine
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 147~153
In this paper, we Propose the Job-Pair Comparison (JPC) rule to minimize total tardiness in a single machine. For this purpose we derive conditional expression to choose the desirable job sequence. We also prove the transitivity of JPC rule, to prevent cycle and to decrease the complexity of comparison.
Two Phase Heuristic for Test Set Generation Using Simulated Annealing in Cyber Testbank System
Korean Management Science Review, volume 18, issue 1, 2001, Pages 155~164
The widespread diffusion of Internet has enables every college and education institute to develope cyber education systems to meet the multiple needs of students, but it is not true that the effectiveness of cyber education is fruitful in terms of evaluation systems. Most of the early developed web-based evaluation systems for cyber education require that all the students should solve uniformed test set which are included in the predetermined static HTML pages. Therefore, it is impossible to dynamically provide a test set with consistency and reliability. This paper purpose to describe the employment of simulated annealing in cyber testbank system for test set generation that satisfy all constraints. The constraints include number of items for each skill, method, domain, topic, and so on. This research developed two phase heuristic combining sequential test set generation algorithm with simulated annealing. As a result of computer simulations, it was found that the two phase heuristic outperforms the other algorithms.
