Performance evaluation of AS/RS common zone storage policy with demand variation
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 1~12
Performances of common zone with various sizes are examined for possible demand rate variations for an AS/RS. Common zone is a middle area located between the 1st class and the 2nd class to be used by the 1st class Items if the assigned racks are not enough. This area is designed to resolve the rack shortage problem associated with a particular class. In the previous researches, effect of demand rate variation is Ignored since flxed demand rate is assumed. It is found that rack shortage rate is decreased up to 67% of common zone size. However, no difference is found at above 70%. Waiting time tends to be longer with Increased common zone while travel time and throughput are not affected at all with the common zone sloe.
A Mathematical Model for an Analysis of Container Inventory under Deterministic Environment
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 13~28
This Paper discusses how to estimate the container yard space of a port container terminal as well as how much the Inventory level of containers Is affected by related factors such as allowable dwell time for containers, handling volume per containership, and loading/unloading productivity of a port container terminal. Under the assumption of static relations among the factors, a model for estimating the container yard space is suggested. In terms of arrival patterns of containers, sub-models for export, import, and transshipment containers are constructed separately. A numerical example and the sensitivity analysis for some parameters are provided to help intuitive understanding the characteristics of the suggested model. The experimental results show that the allowable dwell time for containers is the most critical one of the factors to influence on the maximum Inventory level of containers.
Capacity Analysis of Internet Servers Based on Log-Data Analysis
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 29~38
Due to the rapid increase In the Internet traffic volume, ISPs are faced with the definite need of the expansion of server capacity. In order to Provide prompt services for customers and still prevent excessive facility cost, it is critical to determine the optimum level of internet server capacity. The purpose of this Paper is to provide a simple but effective strategy on the expansion of servers capacity according to the increase in internet traffic. We model an internet server as an M/G/m/m queueing system and derive an efficient method to compute the loss probability which, In turn, Is used as a basis to determine proper server capacity. The Process of estimating the traffic parameter values at each server based on log data analysis is also given. All the procedures are numerically demonstrated through the process of analyzing actual log data collected from a game company.

An algorithm for the preprocessing shortest path problem
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 55~66
Given a directed network, a designated arc, and lowers and upper bounds for the distance of each arc, the preprocessing shortest path problem Is a decision problem that decides whether there is some choice of distance vector such that the distance of each arc honors the given lower and upper bound restriction, and such that the designated arc is on some shortest path from a source node to a destination notre with respect to the chosen distance vector. The preprocessing shortest path problem has many real world applications such as communication and transportation network management and the problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, we develop an algorithm that solves the problem using the structural properties of shortest paths.
On visualization of solutions of the linear Programming
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 67~75
This paper deals with the visualization method of solutions of the linear programming Problem. We used the revised simplex method for the LP algorithm. To represent the solutions at each iteration, we need the informations of feasible legion and animated effect of solutions. For the visualization in high dimension space, we used the method of Projection to the three dimensions if the decision variable vector is over three dimensions, and we studied the technique of preserving original Polyhedral information such as the number of vertices. In addtion, we studied the method of visualizing unbounded feasible region and the adjacency relationship of the vortices welch is Indispensable to cisualize feasible legion.
Empirical Evidence on the Usefulness of Throughput Time
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 75~88
In recent years, it Is necessary to develop an alternative measure, the time efficiency of management activities, as a more measurable and operational tool Instead of traditional accounting measures such as inventories turnover. Therefore the concept of throughput time has got much attention as useful tool for controlling time based management. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usefulness and adaptability of throughput time. The sample consists of 212 non-banking firms listed on the Korean Stock Exchange. The test Period were 10 years(1989-1998). The regression analysis for this study was performed using the cross-sectional data for the sample, and it was also performed for each Industry. The results show that net Income to tonal assets and labor productivity (value added Per employee) variables in the model was signiflcantly associated with throughput time. On the other hand, the relationship between throughput time and logistics cost to sales do largely not have statistical significance. Especially, it is found that the relationship do not have significance or negative response in food & beverage industry and wholesale & retail industry. In summary, the results show that the measure of throughput time can be an effective managerial Indicator for time based competition and management.

The Coordinated Local (R, S) Policy for Managing Inventory in Multi-stage Distribution Systems
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 107~116
A major challenge to supply chain managers is how to control inventories and costs along the supply chain while maximizing customer service Performance. In the literature, although the optimal management of inventory along the supply chain has received considerable attention during the past decades, the attention has been mainly given to multi-echelon control policies. A prerequisite for applying these policies is full information transparency in the supply chain, which is hard to accomplish in practice because it may require major organizational chanties. In the case that a decentralized control (local (R, S) policy) should be used at each location in multi-stave distribution systems, this paper presents the coordinating approach of determining the best policy which satisfies predetermined target customer service levels and minimizes the mean physical stock along the system.
A Comparison of Efficiency Estimation Methods via Monte Carlo Analysis
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 117~128
In this Paper we investigate the performance of the five efficiency estimation methods which include the stochastic frontier model estimated by maximum likelihood (SFML), the stochastic frontier model estimated by corrected ordinary least squares (SFCOLS), the data envelopment analysis (DIA) model, the combined estimation of SFML and DEA (SFML + DEA), and the combined estimation of SFCOLS arid DIA (SFCOLS+ DEA) using Monte Carlo analysis. The results include: 1) SFML provides most accurate efficiency estimates for the sample sloe 150 or over,2) SFML+DEAor SFCOLS + DIA Perform better for the cases with sample sloe 25, 50, and low random errors, 3) SFCOLS performs better for the close with sample sloe 25, 50, and very high random errors.
Exploring the Effect of Replacement Levels on Data Fusion Methods : A Monte Carlo Simulation Approach
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 129~142
Data fusion Is a technique used for creating an Integrated database by combining two or more databases that include a different set of variables or attributes. This paper attempts to apply data fusion technique to customer relationships management (CRM), in that we can not only plan a database structure but also collect and manage customer data In a more efficient way In particular our study Is useful when no s1n91e database Is complete, i.e., each and every subject in the pre-integrated database contains somewhat missing observations. According to the way of treating the common variables, donors can be differently selected for the substitution of the missing attributes of recipients. One way is to find the donor that has the highest correlation coefficient with the recipient by. treating common variables metrically The other is based on the closest distance by the correspondence analysis in case of treating common variables nominally. The predictability of data fusion for CRM can be evaluated by measuring the correlation of the original database and the substituted one. A Monte Carlo Simulation analysis is used to examine the stability of the two substitution methods in building an integrated database
Revenue Management Model for Internet Access Service
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 143~162
The concept of revenue management have been used widely In the hotel and all transportation industries, and considered as a good system for managing a perishable asset. Recently, its' application area is being increasingly expanded to service industries such as the travel, the railway, the Internet and the sport industries. Internet business can be classified into several groups according to the characteristics of the individual business. One of groups is Internet Access Servoce business which connects each users to the internet. In this paper, since internet Access Services (IAS) business has a similar property to the service Industry, we will apply a revenue management concept to It. With some modification of existing model developed by Subramanian et.al. for airlines, we suggest the revenue management model being applied to IAS business. Computational experiment shows that the Increase of the revenue Is up to 7% by appluing our model. It means our model has a potential to manage IAS business effectively.

Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 189~196
Data clustering is often one of the first steps in data mining analysis. It Identifies groups of related objects that can be used as a starling point for exploring further relationships. This technique supports the development of population segmentation models, such as demographic-based customer segmentation. This paper Purpose to present the development of two phase hierarchical clustering algorithm for group formation. Applications of the algorithm for product-customer group formation in customer relationahip management are also discussed. As a result of computer simulations, suggested algorithm outperforms single link method and k-means clustering.
A Study on the Factors Affecting the Implementation Process of Information System Development Methodology
Korean Management Science Review, volume 19, issue 1, 2002, Pages 197~224
Our study focuses on the implementation of IS development methodology as the innovation of IS organization. We have two main research objectives. We Intend to understand the critical factors affecting the implementation process of IS methodology. We also intend to deeply analyze the relationship among the implementation processes of methodology. The whole innovation process is divided into detailed four levels tilth dynamic and evolving Point of clew a cognition level, an adoption level, an acceptance level and an usage level. The results of our study are as follows. The main factors affecting initiation level of the IS methodology are the innovativeness of IS members, the existence of champion manager, training, the existence of IS performance gap, executive supports for IS organization, and the relative advantage of IS development methodology At the Implementation level, It is understood that the existence of champion manager executive supports, training and the relative advantage of innovation are the main factors. However, the complexity of Innovation is a megative factor about the quality of accepting and using the methodology In Innovation process. In performing the Innovation process, the Previous level gives very notable affection to the continuous next level. However it's also understood that positive attitude of adoption level does not directly affect the quality of using Innovation. Therefore, IS managers must pay attention to manacle each level of the Innovation Process to successfully accomplish the Implementation of IS methodology.
