Effect of Covering the Extremities with Garment on Thermal Consort and Thermoregulation
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 163~169
This study was carried on to investigate the effect of physiological significance of hand and foot on thermoregulation and thermal pleasantness in clothed
Oral and skin temperatures after immersing hands and feet in the cold or the warm water at Ta of 25 and
, respectively, were compared with four types of garment worn by two healthy male subjects. Four types of gannent expressed as A, B, C, D, were determined by the exposed areas of extremities : hands only are exposed in A, feet only are exposed in B, both hands and forearms are exposed in C, and both feet and legs are exposed in D. Major findings observed reveals that oral temperatures in D were generally maintained higher than those in A, B, and C. This is probably because the size of exposed areas rather than skin temperatures seem to determine the level of core temperature. Also, obtained result that thermal sensations felt by the subjects in foot are more closely related to local skin temperatures when they are compared to those in hand. From these findings it would be suggested that the significance of hand and foot in temperature regulation appears to be connected more with behavioral than with physiological.
A Study on Female Clothing Image Evaluation by Male University Students
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 170~179

The Effect of Age and Clothing Cues on Impression Formation of Men Clothed in Suits
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 197~210
The purpose of this study was to Investigate men's clothing in regard to (1) the effect of wearer's age and clothing: rues on impression formation, and (2) the effect of perceiver's age on impressions formed by the wearer's age and the fuction of clothing cues. The experimental design of this study was between-subjects 24_full factorial design by 4 independent variables. The subjects consisted of 192 subjects in each of two male perceiver groups according to age(20s and 50s). The experimental moterials developed for the study were a set of stimuli al)d a response scale. The stimuli consisted of 16 color photographs made by identical manipulations of 4 independent variables consisting of 2 levels each. Each one of the sixteen sub-samples included 12 subjects from 2 perceiver groups. The independent variables provided by the photographs were (1) wearer's age (20s and 50s), (2) suit color (navy blue and beige),' (3) suit style (single breasted and double breasted), and (4) necktie color (analogous and complementary colors) . The 7-point semantic differential response scale which was designed to measure the impression of the stimuli was composed of 30 bipolar adjectives. The responses to the semantic differential scales were analyzed using factor analysis and ANOVA. The results were as follows:1) Wearer's age, suit color, suit style, and necktie color had significant effects on impression of the 3 factors (appearance·potency, individuality activity, and evaluation) partiafly. However, the suit style was the most dominent clothing cue : the single breasted suit conveyed positive impression of individuality' activity to both of the wearer's age groups than double breasted suit did on both of the perceiver's age groups. 2) Perceiver's age partially influenced impressions formed by the age and the clothing cues of men clothed in suits : the young perceiver's group was less affected by them than middle aged group.

There were measured 17 items of the foot for factor analysis and cluster analysis. The result was as follows : 1. 1'here were 9 items selected by factor analysis. 2.'rho cluster analysis of the foot must be analyzed by direct and indirect measurement indivisually. 3. The cluster analysis of the direct measurement ; Cluster 1 : 1'he foot length is all much the same to mean value of this age group and the items of width and circumference are relatively small to other clusters. Cluster 2 ; The foot length is relatively small to other clusters and the items of width and circumference are all much the same to mean value of this age group. Cluster 3 ; The foot sine Is relatively large to other clusters. 4. The cluster analysis of indirect measurement ; Cluster 1 ; The (cot print angle is high find Metatarso-Phalanx angle is transformed Cluster 2 ; The foot print angle is low and Melatarso-Phalanx angle is normal. Cluster 3 : Tho foot print angle Is middle and Metatarso-Phalanx angle is all the mush same to mean value of this age group. Cluster 4 . The foot print angle Is the most value and Metatarso-Phalanx angle is normal.
A Study on Species of Indigo Genus Found in Chosen Dynasty
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 221~233
In several literature in China were recorded various species of the indigo genus, but in Chosen documents, the two have been intensively mentioned, that is, Polygonum tinctorium (PT) and liatis Tinctuna(IT). Allowing for some slight contradictions of the records between the two countries, we insist that J)T is the aborigines historically longer than any other indigo plant in Korea and that IT is the one Implanted from China in late Chosen period. Indigos can be grouped into two major categories : 'Chon' or Indigo forming sediment in the course of making, and 'Nam' or the one without. The dyestuffs of blue, or dark blue tineged with red, which had been ocasionally recorded until the mid Chosen, could be made from the . species without sediment. The period when the color thus obtained was prevalent can be traced back to the era of Yongio, when the import of blue-dyed textiles from China was prohibited to encourage the domestic dyeing industry. However, a more clarification is needed on this matter, since all of the previous researches are arguing, with little validity, that the indigo genus in Korea be PT. Judging from the documents recording that PT did not form any sediment, and that from it was obtained only light color like indigo, it is a matter of re-discussion in terms of botanical taxonomy to define as PT the species being cultivated in some areas in Chollanam-do. In conclusion, a joint research, including specialists in traditional dyestuffs and in botany in relation to the taxonomical problem of the indigo genus, would be expected for further Investigation on this matter.
An Effect of Clothing Purchasing Situation on Store Choice Behavior
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 234~243
This research has studied situational effects on the perceived risk and store choice behavior. Data were obtained from 388 females with full-time jobs living in Pusan. The results analyzed by Spearman's rank correlation analysis, analysis of variance(ANOVA), 1-test and discriminant analysis. The results of this study were as follows; 1. There were significant differences in percieved risk according to the clothing purchasing situations. Performance risk was perceived high in gift-shopping situation and time-pressured situation, and financial risk was perceived high in self-shoving situation. 2. There were particularly significant differences in store attributes evaluation according to the clothing purchasing situations. In self-shopping situation, price, quality and reliability, store loyalty were evaluated as important store attributes. In gift-shopping situation, quality and reliability, product iuomation and in time-pressured situation, store loyalty and product information were evaluated as important store attributes. 3. Consumers preferred national brand franchise stores in self-shopping situation. They preferred department stores in gift-shopping situation and time-pressured situation. The types of selected store were mainly affetted by shopping convenience and location convenience.
Effect of Air Content on the Heat Transfer Characteristics of Nonwoven Insulating Materials
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 244~251
The purpose of this study was to analyze conductive convective and radiative heat transfer characteristic of the nonwovens were studied by measuring thermal conductance at atmospheric and low air pressure. The results obtained were as follows . 1) As thickness of air layer Increased, overall heat transfer was decreased by reducing conductive and radiative heat trasfer. 2) The conductive and convective heat trasfer by air were in the range of 79~8971 of overall heat transfer. 3) As thickness of nonwoven increased for a given solidity, overall heat trasfer was decresed by increasing total thickness of air layer and by reducing conductive and radiative heat transfer. 4) For a given weight, increasing thickness is more effective than increasing solidity.
Observation on Neck Form Changes Related to Aging in Men(Part I) -Using the Sliding Gause Measurement Method-
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 252~262
As a means to get a better understanding of the kind of form changes to which is subject the neck of the men, in its aging process, several measurement recordings on a vertical and horizontal sections were carried. Subjects were young, middle aged and elder men (15 in their twenties, 11 in their forties and again 11 in their sixties) 1) The analysis of the meansurement results led us to distinguish 3 types of subjects according to the position of the their Adam's apple with regard to the horizontal plane containing their 7th cervical vertebrae point : clearly above (Type I), next to(Type II), clearly below(Type III). We found that young men correspond to the Type I and II, middle aged men to the Type ll and 111 and elder men only to the Type III. 2) The comparison of the horizontal sectional surface contained in the planes corresponding to the 4 points, shows a larger sectional surface for elder men in the Adam's apple plane, accompanied by a change of position of the Adam's apple forwards. As for the front neck point plane, the body sectiolial surface is larger in depth in elder men, without much change in breadth. And for the acromion point plane, we observed also an increase in depth, but with a decrease in breadth corresponding partially to the atrophy of the thoraric cage in eldermen.
Consumer Intention to Purchase Domestic/Foreign Brand Jeans;Beliefs, Attitude, and Individual Characteristics.
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 263~272
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that might distinguish those who have a high level of Intention to purchase each of domestic, foreign designer and national brand jeans from those who have a low intention in terms of evaluative criteria belief, ideal jeans image and clothing altitude. The sample consisted of 198 male and 197 female students from five universities in Seoul. The questionnnaire consisted of 50 seven-point semantic differential scales dealing with evaluative criteria and ideal jeans image, beliefs about and intention to purchase domestic, foreign designer and foreign national brand jeans and 25 Likert type clothing attitude scales. Based on a series of t-tests the results showed that color and design were the most influencing factor among the evaluative criteria belief, regardless of brand type, while durability, accessory, sewing were the least. Sexy image, brand consciousnees and fashion interest were the important factor that distinguish high intention to purchase group fro)m low intention to purchase group.
Effects of Covering Parts of Body with Garments on Human Thermoregulation and Sensation
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 18, issue 2, 1994, Pages 273~282
The physiological significances of the upper and lower body on thermoregulation and sensation were studied in this paper. Experiments were carried out on 4 females in a climatic chamber conditioned at 1)
, both with 50% R.H., covering the upper body (U) or lower body (L) with garments. 1. When the upper or lower body is covered or exposured respectively, the mean skin tempterature of upper body is higher than that of lower body. And upper body is more easily influenced by the environmental temperature than lower body. It means the skin temperatures of the upper body change faster than those of the lower body following the environmental changes. 2. In U and L, the skin temperatures of the upper limbs (thighs, upper arms) are lower than those of the peripherals (hands, feet). 3. Warm sensations and skin temperatures of the upper body showed high correlation and it was the case with cold sensations and skin temperatures of the lower body. 4. In high temperature condition
, mean skill temperature and rectal temperature in L were lower than in U. This lower rectal temperature in L is probably due to the insulation of the lower body with garments that promotes the heat radiation only in the high temperature environment.
