Effect of Fixation Methods on the Flame Retardant and Performance Properties of MDPPA/HMM treated Cotton
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 15~23
Effect of fixation methods on the flame retardant(FR) and performance properties of MDPPA/HMM treated cotton fabrics were studied. Combination of three different fixation methods - premercerization, swelling agent treatment, pad dry cure fixation, and wet fixation - were applied to flame retardant finish of cotton with MDPPA/HMM. As a result, an increase in internal volume of cotton fiber by pre-mercerization and addition of swelling agent, and wet fixation increased %add-on of FR agent improving FR efficiency and wash fastness. Tensile strength of MDPPA/HMM treated cotton fabrics by wet fixation and swelling agent were slightly decreased, but that of premercerized cotton was improved. Wet fixated fabric showed lower bending rigidity and better compressional properties which improved fabric hand. Retention of swelling ability of cotton treated with MDPPA/HMM improved moisture absorption properties.

Dyeing Properties of Cotton with Black Tea Colorants
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 34~42
The colorante from black tea infusion were applied to cotton fabric. Dyeing properties were investigated in terms of dye uptakes at various dyeing conditions and the effect of mordants on color change and colorfastness. Cotton showed low affinity to black tea colorants. Effects of mordants on dye uptake was not significant except Sn. Irrespective of mordant type, color of cotton dyed with black tea colorants was brownish and colorfastness was generally good. In order to improve dye uptake, cotton was cationized by treating with Cationon UK(tertiary ammonium salt) and chitosan. Dye uptake of cotton was remarkably increased by cationizing. Cationon UK was more effective than chitosan.

The Study of Antibiosis of the Fabrics Dyed by Wormwood Extract
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 67~76
Dyeing fastness and antibiosis effects of fabrics dyed with wormwood, which has been used in folk medicines and dietary life in Korea for a long time, were studied through dyeing small overcoats, which are used as diapers, with wormwood extract. As for the dying fastness test results, the fastness of decoloration was not that good but the pollution level showed a relatively positive result. As for the antibiosis effect results, the antibiosis of the dyed sample was better than the original sample on 3 kinds of bacteria, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and on 2 kinds of the fungi(Eumycetes). Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Especially, the sample that was mordant with CaCl2 and FeSO4·7H2O showed the best antibiosis effect. On the other hand, the sample that showed the best antibiosis effect was the refined fabric, which is a fabric that is not dyed.
Tactile Sensibility of New Generation High Touch Polyester Fabrics for Women's Outerwear at Different Environmental Conditions
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 77~86
Purposes of this study were firstly to refine the measurement technique of tactile sensation and sensibility induced by touching the fabrics and secondly to investigate the differences of tactile sensibility depending on environmental conditions and the type of polyester fabrics. The environmental conditions were controlled at 20
3%RH(standard) and at 29
3%RH(warm & humid). As results, three factors were extracted from factor analysis of sensory assessment scale. The first factor was thickness and weight, the second one was surface-related property and the third one was stiffness in both environments. Depending on the environmental conditions, heat and moisture-related sensations such as [cold], [damp] and [dry & drapable] were affected significantly. Regression equations with the sensation descriptors were developed for the prediction of tactile sensibility(R2>.89). While the most efficient descriptor was [thin & flexible] in the standard environmental conditions, that was [dry & drapable] in the warm & humid environmental condition.
Effects of Chitosan Treatment on Properties of Wool Fabrics
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 87~95
The changes on shrinkage, dyeability, antimicrobial activities and other physical properties of wool fabrics by chitosan treatment were investigated. A acid dye, a basic dye and natural artemisia were used for dyeing of wool fabrics. For Antimicrobial test of wool fabrics, S.Aureus was used. As the results, The wool fabrics treated with chitosan showed a marked decrease in shrinkage. Dyeability increased slightly as concentration of chitosan treatment increased, Dyeability of acid dye was the highest than other dyes. On the other hand, the dyeability of basic dye on chitosan treated fabrics was lower than untreated fabrics. Reduction rates of colony of chitosan-treated wool fabrics showed from 64.8% to 85.24% as chitosan concentration increased. Reduction rates of colony of the chitosan-treated fabrics decreased by dyeing with acid and basic dye. But increased by retreating with chitosan. Fabrics dyeing with atremisia showed above 90% reduction rate against S.Aureus on all chitosan concentrations. The Tensile properties of chitosan-treated fabrics showed little decrease. The moisture regain and the air permeability was decreased on chitosan concentration on 0.1% but recovered as chitosan concentration increased. The warmth retention was increased a little by chitosan treatment. The drapeability became hard as chitosan concentration increased.
A Study on the Physiological Effects and Dyeing Properties of the Extract of Fermented (Part I)
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 96~104
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity, antimutagenic and anticancer effects and dyeing properties of the fermented indigo extract. The physiological effects of natural color extracts from colorant plants(gardenia, beet and indigo) were studied. The methanol extract of indigo showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of E. coli and Staph. aureus, and also showed a strong antimicrobial effect on Trich. mentagrophytes compared to others. The methanol extract of indigo showed antimutagenic activities against aflatoxin B1(AFB1) in the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100. The proliferation of Clone M-3 mouse melanoma cells and A431 human epidermoid carcinoma cells was inhibited by the methanol extract of indigo. So we decided to use natural indigo for dyeing the fabrics because of those effects. Dried indigo leaves were fermented at variouss temperature and the fermented indigo was reduced by using alkaline(NaOH, Ca(OH)2) and glucose to dye the fabrics. The values of K/S fermented indigo showed the highest value when it was fermented at 3
. The indigo fermented at 3
had the greatest number of total bacterial counts and we identified one of the main microorganisms as Aspergillus niger. This microorganism was responsible for the indigo fermentation and accelerated indigo fermentation. So it can be supposed to reduce the fermentation period of indigo by inoculating Aspergillus niger into the indigo leaves at 3
A Study on the Bodice and Sleeve Patterns for Middle-aged Women
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 105~115
This study was intended to find body pattern of middle aged women and make new experimental basic pattern for upper-half of the body for them. This experimental pattern on the idea of body pattern analysis was prepared. For experimental pattern, the prototype basic model was chosen with the best qualified D model from the four meaningful existing patterns. After several steps of correction experimental pattern was made. Comparing with basic D model, the new experimental pattern composed of additional bust girth by 1cm, wider back waist by 0.5cm than front waist and additional armhole by 0.5cm keeping the same size for back and front widths. Making a shoulder line up by 3cm the armhole became deeper accordingly and the room for girth has been transferred to length. Front neck girth became deeper downward but back neck girth risen a little bit. Side line of the bodice formed with inward slope taking from the waist line by 2cm. Instead of dart, modified side line slope was more practical by its function and appearance. Abdominal girth which is lower than waist girth by 8.5cm kept in same size with bust girth. Then abdominal girth became more comfortable. New experimental pattern with changes has been examined in function and appearance. In conclusion, the new experimental basic pattern for the middle-aged women has been proved more practical for both in bodice and sleeve than other existing ones in terms of function and appearance.
The Effects of Supervisors on Goal Orientations and Sales Performance of Department Store Salespeople
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 116~127
This study investigated the effects of sales supervisors on salespeople's goal orientations and sales performance in fashion retail setting. Specifically, it examined: 1) the differences in salespeople's goal orientations by salespeople characteristics; 2) the effects of supervisor's behavioral orientations on goal orientations of salespeople; and 3) the effects of salespeople's goal orientations on performance. A total of 343 questionnaires collected from salespeople in various apparel and accessory selling departments at four department stores in Korean were analyzed. Variables included supervisor's behavioral orientations(end-results, activity and capability), salespeople's goal orientations(learning and performance), sales performance and salespeople characteristics. MANOVA revealed that three was no difference in goal orientations by salespeople characteristics except by selling department. Multiple regression analysis revealed that supervisor's end-result orientation affected salespeople's learning orientation and performance orientation while activity and capability orientations did not. The study suggests that for long-term performance supervisors and retail organizations need to develop various supervisory behaviors, stimulate learning demands of salespeople, and provide training programs to achieve the learning goal.
A Study on the Handle and Texture of Artificial Suede
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 24, issue 1, 2000, Pages 128~137
A range of suede-like samples were collected including woven fabric type, nonwoven fabric type, and natural suede(sheep). The surface textures of these suede-like fabrics are rather diverse and different from the plain filament type fabrics since there are a lot of fine surface free fiber ends. Physical and mechanical measurements were carried using the KES equipments. Based on the Kawabata-Niwa translational equation, primary hand values and THV were calculated. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed. Using glossmeter, the reflectance pattern was analyzed at different incidence and receiving angles. In order to capture the surface images of the specimens, a CCD camera and frame grabber connected to a PC were employed. The reflectance uniformity of the images was measured with line-profile analysis and standard deviation values of the profile of the images were calculated. After the multiscale wavelet transfermation, correlation among the transformed image was analyzed at each scale. The reflectance uniformity of the natural suede was better than that of nonwoven type suede, while that of woven type suede was the last among the selected three samples(natural suede, nonwoven type, woven type). The correlation analysis among images has shown the possibility of using the wavelet transformation of the images as one of the measures to detect similarities among the textured specimens.
