Cultural and Consumption Values in the Korean Fashion Industry: Integrating Macro-Level Perspectives of Fashion System in Marketing and Clothing Areas
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 1~11
Cultural value is widely accepted as the crucial concept in understanding consumer behavior: cultural values influence consumption values, which determine choices of consuming everyday products and services. The objectives of this study were to (a) identify the difference between cultural and consumption values in the Korean fashion industry and (b) to explain the difference using the existing theories introducing fashion system, which are Solomon(2002)'s cultural production model in marketing area and Hamilton(1997)'s fashion system arbiter in clothing area. The qualitative data used to identify cultural values were 160 apparel advertisements listed in a fashion magazine issued in 2002. Utilizing the convenient sampling method, the quantitative data used to identify consumption values were gathered by surveying female university students aged over 20 living in the Seoul metropolitan area. Of 369 returned questionnaires, 255 were used in factor analysis and paired t-test. Cultural value ignored functional aspect of apparel while it was one of the most salient factors for consumption value. With respect to success and fashion orientation factors, cultural value highly appreciated them while they were the least considered factors for consumption value. These implicate that the Korean fashion industry can be explained by Hamilton's macro-level cultural and fashion system arbiters and cultural production model as well. Introducing macro-level perspectives about fashion system, this study encourages researchers to expand their research spectrum from micro-level consumers to macro-level fashion industry, which has long been neglected by the fashion marketing researchers in Korea.

A Study on Design Development of the Hotel Robe Based on Korean Images
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 45~53
This study was conducted to redesign hotel robes based on Korean images. Hotel robes are furnished at many Korean hotels to increase the level of their guests' satisfaction toward their hotel services. The current hotel robe has several flaws in utility and design. Also, the robes register a low level on guests' satisfaction while generating high cleaning cost. Consequently, improvements in the hotel robes' material, motifs, style, and color were needed. The current one-piece, cotton towel weave robes used in hotels are white and pale. Half of the hotel guests never wear the hotel robes during their stay, because they are unattractive and most Korean hotels provide a robe similar in design. Furthermore, these robes are undistinguishable from those found at other countries. Nevertheless, Korean hotel managers feel that the hotel robe is an important tool to express its hotel image and to increase guests' satisfaction of their services. Most hotel managers and consumers agreed that it is necessary to design hotel robes based on Korean images. They believe that redesigning the hotel robes based on Korean images would induce hotel guests to wear them and at the same time feel part of the Korean traditional culture. The Korean traditional motifs of Taegug, Un (cloud), JuJag (phoenix), and Kumkwan (gold crown) were used in the new design of the hotel robes. The style of new hotel robes is the Korean traditional Pho of the Three Kingdoms. The colors of new hotel robes are white and pink. Forty-three examiners evaluated the newly designed robes for their aesthetic, symbolic and distinctional values. They concurred that the new robes were much better than the current ones.

But, this must escape from the limit of medium system itself that is technology to become a future clothing for human, suggest new agenda about human and society, and confirm the human being's existence and identity continually.
The Study of Ambiguous Sex Identity Appearing in Fashion Advertisements
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 100~111
The purpose of this study is to investigate fashion advertisements portraying ambiguous sex phenomena, including homosexuality codes and to analyze the meaning of these advertisements in order to develop effective fashion advertisements strategies. The method of this study was to observe the readings about ambiguous sex theory, including homosexuality, and analyze fashion advertisements that express this through the Internet and fashion journals. The ambiguous sex expression seen in fashion advertisements meet various consumers' needs which is what the latest advertisement market requires, and offer competitive brand image by fresh appeal. In the background, there are various complex factors like the change of contemporary spirit, and designers' tastes and values about homosexuality. The kinds of ambiguous sex expression techniques portrayed in fashion advertisements can be divided as the ambiguity of physical codes and the ambiguity of sex role identity. These advertisements do play a role as a public campaign for a change in society from the sociocultural point of view. And, from the economical viewpoint, they approach the consumer as a fresh marketing strategy. From the esthetic viewpoint, they express new esthetic sense named “edge” And seen from the designers' viewpoints, they express designers' private sexual identities.
Effect of Abrasion and Absorption on the Handle of Nonwovens for disposable diaper
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 112~118
Recently, as the percentage of women employment has been growing, the demand for various facilities and services regarding household duties and infant rearing is increasing and so do the amount of the disposable diaper used. Among the components of disposable diaper, the top sheet contacting with infant skin directly is usually made with nonwoven textiles. Therefore, the mechanical and surface characteristics of the nonwovens used in disposable diaper are important for the skin health of infants. In this study, we have explored the mechanical and surface properties, such as friction coefficient, fluid permeability and strength, of the nonwovens used for disposable diaper top sheet and observed the variation of their properties with abrasion cycles. Nonwoven materials examined in this study are 100% cotton spunlace, 100% tencel spunlace, 100% polypropylene (PP) thermal bonding and 100% PP air through (Thru-air bonded carded web). From the result of KES-F analysis, we've found that 100% PP air through type nonwoven had a low friction coefficient and showed a little change in surface properties as increasing abrasion cycles. Moreover, it revealed superior fluid permeability and quick-drying character. On the other hand, though showing an excellent absorption force, the spun lace type nonwoven made of 100% cotton and 100% tencel displayed relatively low abrasion strength especially in wetting condition.
A study on sizing system for the school uniforms of middle-school boys
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 119~130
The objective of this study was to develop a school uniform sizing system with high coverage rate for middle school boys, who are in the stage of rapid growth, by identifying problems in existing school uniform sizing systems through surveys of students and uniform manufacturing companies, and analyzing juveniles' physical sizes. For this purpose. the study conducted a survey about how middle school boys choose their uniform sizes, and what complaints they have on the size of the uniforms. In addition, it was investigated what is the current state of uniform manufacturing and sizing systems through a survey of uniform companies, and the study identified problems in the size of school uniforms by comparing physical sizes of juveniles' aged 14 to 16 with the sizing systems of the companies and KS standards in 1997. Juveniles' physical data was a part of the material of the national anthropometric data in 1997. Using the two-way distribution of juveniles' height-bust girth and height-waist girth, this study established the sizing system by increasing the number of sizes for the short interval where juveniles' physical sizes are densely distributed whereas limiting the number of sizes for the long interval where juveniles' physical sizes are rarely distributed, considering the difference between companies' standard and KS' standard.

The Analysis of the Effects of Hanliu Phenomenon on the Chinese Young Generation′s Fashion Style
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 154~164
The purpose of this theses is to review Hanliu phenomenon, a kind of social and cultural phenomenon, in China around A. D. 2000 in the view of the culture-diffusion theory, and analyze its effect to the fashion style of the new young generation of China. In this theses, Hanliu phenomenon means the enthusiasm of Asian people for Korean mass cultures such as Korean dramas, pop songs and fashions from late 1990's. This research adopts two kinds of methods for analyzing Hanliu phenomenon: a qualitative research method and a quantitative one. As a qualitative research method, we analyzed Hanliu phenomenon with several sources of documentaries and audio-visual materials on it. As a quantitative research method, we conducted a survey of about 100 university students in Beijing for how they feel of korean culture and fashions. The Hanliu phenomenon leads to the popularity of Korean products and the general Korean cultures. Also, it affected the Chinese young generation so much that the Korean fashion becomes popular among them. Its effects to the fashion styles of Chinese youths can be summarized in three factors as follows. Firstly, the fashions of Korean entertainers such as H.O.T hair style and Hip-hop fashion style are widely imitated. Secondly, the preference of Korean fashion products has been widely increased. The number of stores dealing with Korean fashion products has been increased. Finally, Korean culture and products have actively been imitated in China according to the increased popularity of Korean fashion products.
Hazardous Substance Analysis of Disposable Diaper for Infant
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 28, issue 1, 2004, Pages 165~171
The analytical method of toxic heavy metals in disposable diapers was developed. Disposable diapers obtained from Korea, Japan, America and German were determinated and quantified. Sample treatment (Total Digestion) was wet chemical acid digestion for extraction of nine hazardous inorganic elements (Sb, As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Hg) in disposable diapers. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES) have been used for analyzing nine hazardous inorganic elements. The results were as follows : The concentration of extractable Sb which was treated for 3 hours with artificial urine and disposable diapers was higher than those of 6 hours and 24 hours. The concentration of extractable Cr was same as Sb. On the other hands, the behavior of Cu and Ni were different from Sb and Cr. Concentrations of extractable Cu and Ni increased as increasing the reaction time between artificial urine and disposable diapers.
