A Study on the Men's Fashion Trend through the Statistical Analysis

) of men's suit style have been classified according to fashion images in order to examine features and change aspects with statistical analysis. The findings of examining features of the trend by year with test of homogeneity, correspondence analysis, biplots, correlation analysis and regression analysis are as follows: (a) there are significant differences on fashion images as the trend by yew with test of homogeneity, (b) there are remarkable differences on the fashion trend by year with correspondence analysis and biplots. (c) There are significant correlations for appearance among fashion images by its frequency through correlation analysis, and (d) it is assumed that fashion images are going to be gradually outstanding according to regression analysis.
Validation of the Proximity of Clothing to Self Scale for Older Persons

Sontag and Lee (2004) recently developed an objectively measurable instrument, the Proximity of Clothing to Self(PCS) Scale, which measured the psychological closeness of clothing to self. They validated a 4-factor, 24-item PCS Scale for use with adolescents and identified the need for confirmation of the factor structure with other age groups. This paper extends the work of Sontag and Lee by employing the PCS Scale with older persons, age 65 and over, and reports the validation of a 3-factor, 19-item PCS Scale for older persons. A mail survey was sent to a national random sample of 1,700 older Persons by means of a list purchased from a U.S. survey sampling company in late November 2004. Total usuable number of respondents was 250 with an adjusted response rate of 15.6 percent. Three analytical rounds of confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) to test the construct validity of the PCS Scale were conducted by using AMOS 5.0(Analysis of Moment Structures), one of several structural equation modeling(SEM) programs. Completion of three rounds of the CFA resulted in a 3-factor, 19-item PCS Scale with demonstrated construct validity and reliability for older persons. The three PCS dimensions are clothing in relation to 1) self as structure-process(PCS Dimension 1-2-3 combined), 2) self-esteem-evaluative and affective processes(PCS Dimension 4-5 combined), and 3) body image and body cathexis(PCS Dimension 6). The initially hypothesized 6-factor scale(Sontag & Lee, 2004) was not confirmed for adolescents in their study nor with older persons in this study. In addition, the 4-factor solution for the adolescent group did not hold for older persons. It appears that the self-system of older persons is more integrated than may be true for younger individuals. Recommendations for future testing of construct validity of the PCS Scale are made.
Analysis of the Degradation Products of Turmeric using GC-MS

Degradation products of the dye extracted from turmeric and the turmeric dyed textiles were examined by using GC-MS after 100 oven (OV) and
(PER) treatments for up to 28 days. Throughout the OV degradation times, 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)- was found consistently, while isovanillin, and vanillic acid were newly detected. In 28 day PER degradation sample, feruloylmethane, 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-, benzoic acid, and vanillic acid were detected as well as isovanillin. Feruloylrnethane, and 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)- were detected from the degraded fabric samples. With the absence of curcuminoids in the GC-MS result, the decreasing pattern of 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydrokyphenyl)- reflect the degradation of curcuminoids in turmeric extraction with the progression of OV degradation times. It is suggested that isovanillin, feruloylmethane, 2-propenoic acid,3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-, and vanillic acid are the probable fingerprint products for determining the turmeric dye from the badly faded archaeological textiles.
Internet Apparel Shopping: Perception of Risk among South Korean Female College Students in the Apparel Major

The purpose of this study was to investigate perception of risks among South Korean female college students within the process of purchasing apparel products through the Internet. The study was implemented by descriptive survey method using questionnaire and subjects consisted of 324 South Korean female college students. Findings of the study showed that the purchasing process particularly regarding delivery and security issues seemed to be a strong concern. On the other hand, unique selection such as apparel brands only available through the Internet was a strong appeal to 37.7% of subjects. Factor analysis profiled risk perception as: 1) Internet Shopping Selection Preference, 2) Delivery Problems and Lack of Security 3) Product Quality and Characteristics 4) Return Policy Difficulties and 5) Fair Prices. Discriminant analysis showed Factors 1, 2 and 3 were significant in helping to differentiate among Non-Purchasers, Fewer-purchasers and Many-Purchasers. Factor 1 and 3 helped differentiate among respondents relative to age range. Across all types of purchasers, offering unique selections of cutting edge fashions and improving risk perception relative to delivery and security concerns seemed important for gaining greater market share. Being able to delivery quality products and communicate product characteristics would be a powerful competitive edge to add to the incentive of convenience in shopping for apparel on the Internet.
Acceptance of Fashion Forecast as Reflected in the Street Fashion in Korea

Forecasting is a critical task for fashion companies because of continuous change in fashion and long process lead-time. Therefore, it is of great importance for both scholars and companies to understand how forecasted fashion styles are accepted by consumers. This research aimed to investigate consumer acceptance of fashion styles in Korea. The study examined and compared oversea collections of women's wear to the street fashion in Korea for seven seasons from 02 s/s to 05 s/s. Information on oversea collections were obtained from the magazine, Fashion Show, and the street fashion information from Seoul Fashion Design Center. The results showed that overall trends presented in oversea collections have been well accepted, while acceptance of specific styles or items varied. During the period of this research, sporty style and feminine style were very strong in the street fashion. Many styles and items were modified and selectively accepted probably because of cultural differences and limitations of mass production. Some styles which were presented in oversea collections were not accepted in Korea, and at the same time some cases were observed only in the street fashion in Korea. The results of this study provide guidelines for Korean apparel companies in merchandise planning and empirical findings to deepen the understanding on Korean society with respect to fashion.
Comparative Analysis of Korean and American Body Sizes & Shapes using 3D Scanned Anthropometric Data

This research is the initial step for establishing a convertible body sizing table applicable to the Korean and American female apparel industry. All 3D female measurement data of the two countries were obtained from Size Korea Project and SizeUSA Project. The sample subjects used in this study were 1,988 Korean and 6,306 American females. Thirty-four(34) variables were chosen as the principal measurements in making garments. The conclusion of this research was as follow: First, it was determined that American women were larger and longer than Korean women in all measurement except shoulder slope measurement. Second, according to the differences analysis of the each age group in Korean Females, all measurements except hip girth had significant differences among the age groups. In case of American females, all measurements except arm length(shoulder to wrist) had significant differences among the age groups. Third, in the comparison of differences between the age groups of the two countries' women, some dimensions varied significantly with age, while others did not show any statistical significance among the age groups. Fourth, according to the t-tests of same age groups between Korean & American female measurements, American female measurements were larger and longer than Korean in all measurements except crotch length total, shoulder slope, hip girth-bust girth and hip girth-waist girth.
Sourcing in Korea - Lessons from an International Textile and Apparel Trade Show in Seoul -

The purpose of this study was to suggest future marketing strategy for Korean textile and apparel industry so that they could find a way to maintain a major sourcing site in the global market place. This study identified international buyers' visiting purposes and the items they were most interested in sourcing from Korea according to their firm types and home country regions. This study analyzed the survey results obtained fiom international buyers who visited the international textile and apparel trade show in Seoul, Korea. The data was analyzed using frequency and
-test analysis. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between buyers' country regions and their interests. There was also a significant relationship between buyers' firm types and their visiting purposes. The results indicated that decision making for what Korean industry should focus their marketing efforts on should be different according to the buyers' country regions and firm types. This study was conducted to present an effective marketing strategy for how Korean textile and apparel industries could survive in the competitive global marketplace.
A Study on the African Image Expressed in 2005 S/S Collections

In this study, for the purpose of correct viewing on the image of Africa and understanding of modem fashion, African image and art, the general characteristics of African costume, the background of fashion subjecting African image, and the trend according to ages were examined based on theoretical background. Then the researcher drew African image by analyzing the works in four 2005 S/S major fashion collections to designers and design factors. The ten voted designers' and brands' works in 2005 S/S collections had four concepts of African image; 'Wild Erotic', 'Abstract Primitive', 'Natural Elegant' and 'Sporty Romantic'. The viewpoint of modem fashion on African image from the aspect of design, designer and fashion trend can be examined as below. First, African costume, which was religious and ceremonial, appeared to emphasize its esthetic side with decorative details in modem fashion design and designers competed to choose a method to harmonize tradition and modem style and by adopting these from occult to decorative meaning, Second, fashion designers presented city unpolished beauty of modem women to a special style and made african image to be recognized as a code of fashion culture by integrating it with modem people's mind to go back to the past and admiration for the purity of nature. Third, thanks to the instinctive vitality hidden in the primitive life, inspiration for creative design that is found in the esthetic mind of the Indians, foreign taste emphasizing ethnic trend, and admiration to naturalism due to the increase of concern over ecology, 'African image' led the beginning of 21C trend by being settled as a in fashion trend.
A Comparative Cross-cultural Study of Contemporary Modesty and Immodesty in American and South Korean College Women

This research examines current viewpoints on modesty and immodesty in dress from a cross-cultural perspective. The purposes of this study was to explore the concept of modesty and to find out sub-variables of modesty, and the similarities and differences of modesty between two cultures. This qualitative interview study of 58 female college students in America and 36 in Korea examines attitudes about modesty. The data collection was performed in America and Korea simultaneously in Feb. 2004. According to the results of this study, the concept of modesty had 4 sub-variables such as covering up, appropriateness, drawing attention from others, and conservativeness. Both American and Korean students mentioned that time and place are closely related with modesty and that modesty was related with gender. Also cultural differences were existed.
Adaptive Clothing Designs for the Individuals with Special Needs

Nowadays the numbers of the disabled and elderly have been increasing, and the development of adaptive clothing for these people is in demand. The purpose of this study was to give ideas and solutions for the special needs clothing design. The knowledge of medical situation of the individuals with special needs has been examined and factors affecting adaptive clothing were suggested. Twenty-one web sites were investigated and the most practical, functional, fashionable adaptive clothes were suggested by items. Construction and location of openings, number and type of fastenings, and design of garments for comfort and ease of movement were carefully considered in these clothes. Better appearance through improvement of clothing will help these people to believe that they have worth in the sight of others and in their own view of themselves. Disabled and elderly can obtain the quality of life, maintain the dignity, and make the access to the world a little bit easier by solving the particular clothing problems with all these convenient as well fashionable adaptive clothing.
The Effect of Supply Chain Management Activities and Marketing Capabilities on the Performance of Apparel Firms

The purpose of this research is to examine the level of SCM activity, marketing capability, and firm performance for apparel firms, and to investigate the effect of SCM activities and marketing capabilities for firm performance improvement. This study surveyed domestic apparel manufacturing brands that distribute products nationwide. The data was collected through questionnaires sent to managers or executives in large and middle manufacturing corporations among Korea's listed and registered corporations. The data collection has been carried out from November 10 until December 11, 2006. The questionnaires were transmitted by individual visit, fax, and mail. A total of 98 completed responses were returned, three incomplete responses were discarded. The results were as follows: First, SCM activity was classified into 3 dimensions: structural, logistical, and technological factor. Three dimensions of marketing capability were identified with differentiation, cost-leadership, and operational factor. Firm performance was classified into three dimensions: financial, productivity, and customer satisfaction factor. Second, result of analyzing effects of SCM activities for firm performance improvement, it was found that the improvement of technological activities affected acquirement of financial, productivity, and customer satisfaction performs. Structural activities affected factor of productivity performs. Third, result of analyzing effects of marketing capabilities for firm performance improvement, improvement of differentiation capabilities affected acquirement of financial, customer satisfaction performs. And the improvement of operational capability affected acquirement of financial performs and improvement of cost-leadership capability affected factor of productivity performs.
Physiological Responses of Wearing Safety Helmet with Cooling Pack in Hot Environment

Safety helmets are used widely in various industries by workers since they are legally required to wear them. However, thermal discomfort is one of the major complaints from helmet users. To relieve this problem, frozen gelled packs can be considered for use inside the helmets. In this paper, tests were performed on humans to evaluate the physiological strains of wearing safety helmets and to investigate the effects of using frozen gelled packs inside the helmets. Experiments were conducted in a climatic chamber of WBGT
under four differed experimental conditions: 1) not wearing a safety helmet(NH); 2) wearing a safety helmet with frozen gelled pack A(HA); 3) wearing a safety helmet with frozen gelled pack B(HB); and 4) wearing only a safety helmet(OH). The results were as follows. First, when comparing NH with OH, physiological responses such as
, HR and sweat rate were significantly higher in OH and subjective sensations were reported as less hot and more comfortable than NH(p<.05). Second, in regard to the frozen gelled packs inserted inside the safety helmets, some physiological responses in HA were different from those in HB, according to the two different types of packs. HA was hotter, more uncomfortable and less exhausted than HB. However, result from both HA and HB were lower than those from OH in terms of temperature and humidity inside safety helmet, sweat rate,
increase, heat storage(p<.05). When wearing safety helmets with frozen gelled packs, it was shown that heat strain can be alleviated. These results are expected to help millions of workers who complain that wearing safety helmets is uncomfortable and messy.
Relationship between Thermal Insulation and the Combinations of Korean Women's Clothing by Season - Using a Thermal Manikin -

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the combination of women's clothing by season and thermal insulation using a thermal manikin. A total of 34 kinds of clothing ensembles were selected based on previous studies(8 types for spring/fall, 7 types for summer, and 19 types for winter). Evaluation Criteria and Preferred Image of Jeans Products based on Benefit Segmentation

The purpose of this study was to find differences in evaluation criteria and to find differences in preferred images based on benefits segmented groups of jeans products consumers. Male and female Korean university students participated in the study. Quota sampling method was used to collect the data based on gender and a residential area of the respondents. Data from 492 questionnaires were used in the analysis. Factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc test were conducted. As a result, respondents who seek multi-benefits considered aesthetic criteria(e.g., color, style, design, fit) and quality performance criteria(e.g., durability, ease of care, contractibility, flexibility) more importantly when evaluating and purchasing jeans products. Respondents who seek brand name considered extrinsic criteria(e.g., brand reputation, status symbol, country of origin, fashionability) more importantly than respondents who seek economic efciency. Respondents who seek multi-benefits such as attractiveness, fashion, individuality, and utility tend to prefer all the images: individual image, active image, sexual image, sophisticated image, and simple image when wearing jeans products. Respondents who seek fashion are likely to prefer individual image, and respondents who seek brand name more prefer both individual image and polished image. Mean while, respondents who seek economical efficiency less prefer sexual image and polished image.
Development of Textile Design for Fashion Cultural Products - Focusing on Traditional Korean Patterns -

The purpose of this study is to analyze the symbolism of traditional Korean patterns which reflect an emotional cultural background of Korean people, to apply modernized and developed patterns to Textile Design for fashion cultural products, and to explore productive direction of developing designs of fashion cultural products. The process of developing Textile Design of fashion cultural products which applied symbolism of traditional Korean patterns was conducted as follows. Firstly, based on '05 S/S-'07 S/S fashion trends, a design concept wat decided(man-urban ethnic style, woman-romantic ethnic style). Secondly, motive was abstracted from selected traditional patterns to develop into modem patterns. Thirdly, items were selected according to symbolic meaning of traditional Korean patterns. Man's items included shirts, necktie, and handkerchief which were highly preferred by Korean and foreign visitors. Finally, developed textile designs were diagrammed by item using textile CAD and an illustrator 10 and presented as images. The following results were obtained. First, textile designs for fashion cultural products, in which apply traditional patterns may reflect the understanding of traditional aesthetic beauty and philosophical approach by applying symbolic significance inherent in patterns as well as the aesthetics of the patterns. Second, traditional patterns have been recognized as old fashioned to consumers because they have been often used for traditional handicrafts or folk products. If their unique shapes are changed or simplified, emphasizing images, and trend styles and colors are used, they will be recreated as a modem design. Third, textile designs using traditional patterns may provide various images and visual effects according to techniques and production methods. Then, the method will be applied to many items. Finally, since traditional patterns in fashion cultural products can be used as our unique design elements, they can be utilized as the source of design inspiration for the development of value-added products.
