Pastiche in Fashion by Bodily Deformation
Yim, Eun-Hyuk ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 511~518
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.511
Freed from its traditional confinement to the human body, postmodernism in fashion exposes the defectiveness of body and abstracts from the body under. Deformation of the body denotes the break away from the idealized and standardized body for mass productions. It tends to experiment with extreme exaggeration in form, refusing to subscribe to the traditional values that build on the balance and symmetry of the body. Bodily deformation carried out historical and cultural pastiche opposes the sartorial convention and symbolism which results in the discord between signifiant and
of clothing. As a type of intimate architecture, fashion always mediates the dialogue between clothes and body, or fashion and figure. My study suggests a framework to analyze bodily deformation as pastiche, focusing on the relationship between clothes and the body. In order to inquire the deformation of the body in fashion, my study examines subjects of the fashion collections of the turn of the 21st century, using the method of literature research and content analysis.

Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 519~530
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.519
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the prior knowledge, the market position and negative information of the alliance apparel product on consumer attitude including preference, purchase intent and utility. Smart wear with MP3 was selected for the alliance apparel product. Negative information was manipulated into two types-product related and brand related negative information. 251 subjects participated for the study. For the data analysis, reliability test and three way analysis of variance were conducted. The results showed that when the partner brand has the higher market position, subjects with high prior knowledge revealed preference for the alliance apparel product more. When the partner brand has the higher market position, the subjects who were given the negative information on the alliance apparel product reported preference and utility more than the ones who were given the negative information on the company. The findings of the study imply that apparel industries should make an effort to establish the positive corporate image as well as to produce high quality apparel product. Also marketers should provide consumers with the knowledge about brand new alliance apparel product.

Chae, Hye-Sook ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 531~542
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.531
This study examines the correlation between the characteristics of sustainable slow design, The outcome derived from the pro-environmental consciousness in fashion design, and the trends of modern fashion design. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, slow design for sustainability shows an environmental consciousness and stresses the ethical aspects of fashion design that take into account the wellbeing and sustainable development of human society. It also focuses on the continuos present in which the consistent pace of life endures, rather than pursuing speedy changes of fashion by titillating desire. Second, the five characteristics of slow design have been extracted from the analysis of the examples of fashion industry and other fashion-related areas. They are sustainability, recyclibility, handicraft, naturalness, and simplicity. Third, these characteristics of slow design have much to do with modern fashion genres. For instance, classical style fashions such as Chanel suit and Burberry coat have the same qualities of sustainability, while at the same time the Vintage fashion, which reinterprets the fashions from bygone eras in modern style, has the tendency of recyclibility, and the Hippie style, a resurrection of hand-touch spirit that emerged as a secondhand style expressionism resisting uniform mass production, has not only the quality of handicraft but also recyclibility.

Kim, Sun-Young ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 563~573
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.563
This study analyzed the trends and aesthetic characteristics of fur design found in the contemporary fashion to examine the status of fur material in the contemporary fashion design, and through an analysis of the meaning it attempted to come up with a new viewpoint and form on material for the future fashion design. A literature review was used to explore the kinds and properties of furs. In addition, an empirical analysis of works that have appeared in fashion collections since the year 2000 was conducted with local and foreign fashion magazines such as Gap, Vogue, and Mode & Mode and other publications related to fashion collections. In the contemporary fashion, the trends of fur design are represented by use of various items, material combinations, application to decorative purposes(like trimmings, details, or accessories), and a wide range of colors and textures available by advanced dyeing and finishing techniques. The aesthetic values intrinsic to fur design are that the expression of conspicuous luxury covers even the qualitative aspect of luxury and adds fashionable images to casual items, contributing to the popularization of fur fashion, by using a variety of artificial furs; the expression of sensual feminine beauty allows the animal and primitive feel characteristic of furs to convert a feminine body into a sensual image of more than a simple biological impulse; and the expression of hybridity presents a new viewpoint through distortions, exaggerations, deviations from the existing constituent forms, or futuristic sensibilities in all elements of fashion design.

The aim of this study was to present a flexible and satisfactory clothing design for girls aged 4 to 6 years of age, which can be worn comfortably for 3 years, during that age range. This study focuses attention on the need for well-fitting clothes in the young girls` market, and provides a basis for development of designs that can be worn for a long time, are comfortable for children to wear, and reflect preferences of both children and parents. Documentary research was executed to examine the history and changes of children`s wear. Internet and market research were carried out to understand the current situation of girls` clothing in Korea. In-depth interview subjects were girls aged 4 to 6 and their guardians. Subjects were asked questions related to children`s wear size and design, and measurements were taken of child subjects. Children`s wear on the Internet was found to be trendy and inexpensive but of a low quality, as was children`s wear at Dongdaemun market. Children`s wear at department stores was of high quality and pretty, but did not consider size much and was expensive. One problem of the Korean children`s wear market was lack of a unified size system. In-depth interviewees pointed out that there are not many clothes that fit their children perfectly. Problems included t-shirt, sleeve and pants length. Parents said they preferred simple and clean designs, and children interviewees all liked pink dresses and skirts. Children`s physical measurements presented by Size Korea were compared and verified with measurements taken of child interviewees, and used as a basis for patterns. The study presented two designs for girls of ages 4 to 6 to wear all through that age range. A sample was made for one of the designs, and an evaluation showed very successful results.

Seok, Eun-Kyung ; Chae, Keum-Seok ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 611~621
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.611
As fashion is a visual symbol that reflects age and culture, cosmetics and beauty are other products of fashion that move the time. A dominant designer of 20th century Chanel does not merely stand for a design innovation of fashion industry that created a vogue. With liberation from corsets that cruelly exaggerated and suppressed female body, meaning of style in modern fashion could be found not only in clothing but also in make-up and hair style. Simplest possible comfort was aimed for, and philosophical concepts of minimalism, modernism and dandyism were incorporated with clothing, cosmetics, perfume, make-up and hair style to establish aesthetical concept of total fashion. Chanel thought of cosmetics as an accessory with essential role and although her philosophy on cosmetics and beauty is not as well known as her clothing style, the authors believe that understanding such philosophy will become an important stepping stone for accurately understanding Chanel style. The purpose of this study is to firstly illuminate the idea that cosmetic beauty can be studied with artistic and philosophical background in addition to its functional side and to secondly investigate the reason why Chanel style is being loved by women with such durability over time and space and with what tempo fashion is connected with cosmetic beauty culture and develops. Third, by studying the ways in which characteristics of Chanel`s fashion philosophy are expressed in cosmetics and beauty culture, this study aims to accurately understand Chanel`s philosophy on cosmetics and beauty. The meaning of this study can be found by showing the evidence that globalization of Korean fashion beauty culture can be achieved only when cosmetics and beauty culture moves with an intimate connection to clothing culture.

Lee, Jee-Hyun ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 644~654
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.644
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of current fashion illustrations within the framework of Multi-space method. Multi-space means being piled up one moment & space on others, and being amassed in a scene. This method is related with Dadaism, Surrealism and Postmodernism, and also influences on the current fashion illustration. In this study, the types of Multi-space method could be classified into 4 types; Repetitive Time Mixture in Multi-space, Juxtaposed Time Mixture in Multi-space, Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space, Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space. The characteristics of Multi-space were analyzed and the results are as followed. The distinctive methods for Time Mixture in Multi-space are repetition and juxtaposition in a scene. Time Mixture in Multi-space can make the nonlinear narration and unreal illusory space in fashion illustrations more effectively. Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space can be related with the heterogeneous, surrealistic illusions in current fashion illustrations. Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space can be characterized into inter-penetration. It can derive spectators to mix the projected & transparent images in a scene for their own imaginary stories. The final imagination can be made differently according to the personal experiences of spectators.

Yang, Hee-Soon ; Lee, Yu-Ri ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, volume 33, issue 4, 2009, Pages 666~677
DOI : 10.5850/JKSCT.2009.33.4.666
The purpose of this study was to analyze market opportunities for Korean image fashion products, focusing on adolescents. In other words, preference, purchase intention and gift intention of adolescents on Korean image fashion products were analyzed. For this study, four stimuli which reflect Korean image were chosen. We measured design evaluation and adolescent fashion innovativeness. The subjects for this study were 219 high school students. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Duncan test, cross-tabulation, correlation analysis, multiple regression. The more innovative the subject is, the higher the clothing purchase frequency and the purchase price are. Also, high-innovative group showed that they like Korean image fashion products more than low one. Product attributes such as prettiness and newness significantly influenced purchase intention for their own use and for others as a gift. In conclusion, when related marketers and scholars provide Korean image products that target adolescents, they should try to make those products more sophisticated and modern.
