Research about Urban Growth Model's Automation

Recently, various researches have been studied on the predict method of land change according to its development. The Cellular Automata(CA) is one of the most popular methods in the urban growth modeling. The basis principle of CA is to repeat operations, which convert the current cell into new cell state by the transaction rule. It will minimize the loss of data by using Fuzzy-AHP and it can lead the flexible urban growth modeling. However, AHP would have a disadvantage to repeat the procedure of the collecting intentions until it derives the weight. Also, it is necessary for the simulation of CA to repeat the operations and the test of data accuracy should be accompanied. The purpose of this study is to predict the Busan city growth model and analyze it according to the automated test method by applying CA as well as Fuzzy-AHP. This study shall improve the difficulties caused by complexity and repetitiveness in the urban grow modeling. The practical modeling could be derived from the verification, and the derived modules could be applied to the similar case studies.
Design and Implementation of A SVG Wireless-Map Mapping Viewer : A Case Study on Mobile GIS for Forest Fire Extinguishment Ground Teams

This study designed and implemented a J2ME based on mapping viewer to browse the SVG based wireless-map in mobile phone. This proposed technique was efficiently applied to a forest fire extinguishment information management system by mapping the exact location of important objects on wireless-map in wireless network. As the result, the study helps to guide the safe and efficient extinguishment affairs and provides the safe extinguishment environment for ground fire fighting teams in real time. And also this technique presents the way to move the client mapping function such as representation of the moving coordinates to server and made it possible to operate SVG based viewer in personal cellular phone.
Analysis of Hydrologic Behavior Including Agricultural Reservoir Operation using SWAT Model

This study is to analyse the hydrological behavior of agricultural reservoir using SWAT model. For the upsteam watershed of Gongdo water level gauge station in Anseongcheon watershed, the streamflows at 2 reservoir (Gosam and Geumgwang) locations and Gongdo station were simulated with reservoir inclusion and exclusion. The daily water surface area and storage have been calculated considering the stage-storage curve function of the reservoir. Afterwards, the reservoir operation module in SWAT was modified from original module in SWAT for daily reservoir discharge simulated by water balance equation. Model validation results were Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficients value of 0.55, root mean square error value of 2.33 mm/day. On the other hand, the simulation results of two reservoir exclusion were Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficients value of 0.37, root mean square error value of 2.91 mm/day. The difference of Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficients between the simulation results of two reservoir inclusion and exclusion at Gongdo station was 0.18. This is caused by the storage and release operation of agricultural reservoirs for the runoff occurred at 2 reservoir watersheds.
Development of an Object-Oriented Framework Data Update System

The 1st phase framework data implementation of National Geographic Information Systems (NGIS) used 1:5,000 digital map with 5 years updating period which is lacking in the latest information. This is a significant factor which hinders the use of framework data. This study proposed the efficient technical method of a location based object data management and system implementation for updating framework data. First, we did an object-oriented data modeling and database design using a location based features identifier(UFID: Unique Feature IDentifier). The second, we developed the system with various functions such as a location based UFID creation, input and output, a spatial and attribute data editing, an object based data processing using UML(Unified Modeling Language). Finally, we applied the system to the study area and got high quality data of 99% accuracy and 35% benefit effect of personnel expenses compare to the previous method. We expect that this study can contribute to the maintenance of national framework data as well as the revitalization of various GIS markets by providing user the latest framework data and that we can develop the methods of a feature-change modeling and monitoring using an object based data management.
The Evaluation of Location Decision Factors of Environmental Foundation Facilities using Environmental Geographic Information System

The purpose of this research is to select an appropriate location of water pollution prevention facilities(WPPF) through evaluating location decision factor using environmental geographic information system. To do that, this research reviewed the current location policies of WPPFs and its related researches. And this paper builds water pollutant statistical databases, integrated them with the geographic information system of the administrative areas where water pollutants are generated, and gears it with statistical programs such as correlation and regression analysis in order to figure out the pollution factors which influence on the location decision of WPPF on the real time base. The volume of discharge of industrial wastewater is one of the most important water pollutants on the location decision of WPPF. And the number of industrial facilities also was the most important location decision factor in constructing the WPPFs. In addition, this paper noted that the number of population in each area makes a role to restraint the construction of WPPF. It identified that the disposal facility in Nackdong river upper-middle watersheds was insufficient in treating the livestock pollutants. Therefore, Gyeongbuk should concentrate on the construction of disposal facilities of livestock pollutant in these areas. The results of this research will contribute to decide what kinds of WPPF should be constructed on which watershed in Nackdong River, and to forecast the future water quality of each watershed.
Analysis of the Relationship between Landform and Forest Fire Severity

Topography factors, as homeostasis variables at forest fire, affect the formation of fuel load patterns, atmospheric phenomena and forest fire behavior. Examination of the correlation between landforms and fire severity is important to decision making for fire hazard analysis and fighting strategies. In this study, fire severity was analyzed using Normalized Burn Ratio(NBR) derived from pre- and post-fire Landsat TM/+ETM images and landform were classified based on Topographic Position Index(TPI) in Samcheok(2000), Cheongyang(2002), and Yangyang(2005) forest fire regions. F-tests and Duncan's multi-range test between landform and fire severity showed that fire severities of headwater, high ridges, and upper slopes is higher than ones of local ridges, midslope ridges, and plains. Fire severity were more sensitive in coniferous forest than broadleaf forests.
Analysis of Determinant Factors of Apartment Price Considering the Spatial Distribution and Housing Attributes

Because local cities are different from large cities, they need to reflect their own characteristics of housing market. Thus in order to obtain useful implications for the establishing sound housing market in Jinju City, this paper investigated the characteristics of spatial distribution and determinant factors that affect apartment price in Jinju City. GIS representation of the apartments showed that most of old and small apartments were built in 'land readjustment project' areas executed in 1970s. On the contrary, new and large scale apartment complexes were built quite recently and distributed in the western and southern parts of the city. Next, in order to examine the factors which affect apartment price, this paper subtracted firstly several variables from the related studies. However in order to avoid multi-colinearity, variables were summarized by means of factor analysis. Then, setting apartment price as a dependant variable, 12 hedonic price models were established with 33 independent variables. As results, building age, floor area, accessibility to university and hospital, accessibility to arterial road, and stair-type building were turned out to be significant. These results will be used in making the supply and allocation plan of urban facilities and housing. Finally as conclusions this paper emphasized the need of periodic analysis of local housing market and establishing detailed housing information systems.
Accuracy Analysis of Ortho Imagery with Different Topographic Characteristic

Mapping applications using satellite imagery have been possible to quantitative analysis since SPOT satellite with stereo image was launched. Especially, high resolution satellite imagery was efficiently used in the field of digital mapping for the areas which are difficult to produce large-scale maps by aerial photogrammetry or carry out ground control point surveying due to unaccessibility. This study extracted the geospatial information out of consideration for topographic characteristic from ortho imagery of the National Geospatial-intelligence Agency(NGA) in the United States of America and analyzed the accuracy of plane coordinate for ortho imagery. For this purpose, the accuracy according to topographic character by comparison between both extraction data from ortho imagery and the digital topographic maps of 1:5000 scale which were produced by Korea National Geographic Information Institute(NGI) was evaluated. It is expected that the results of this study will be fully used as basic information for ground control point acquisition or digital mapping in unaccessible area.
Development of Cross Section Management System in Tunnel using Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data

Laser scanning technology with high positional accuracy and high density will be widely applied to vast range of fields including geomatics. Especially, the development of laser scanning technology enabling long range information extraction is increasing its full use in civil engineering. This study taps into the strengths of a terrestrial laser scanning technique to develop a tunnel cross section management system that can be practically employed for determining the cross section of tunnels more promptly and accurately. Three dimensional data with high density were obtained in a prompt and accurate manner using a terrestrial laser scanner. Data processing was then conducted to promptly determine arbitrary cross sections at 0.1meter, 0.5meter and 1.0meter intervals. A laser scanning technique was also used to quickly and accurately calculate the overbreak and underbreak of both each cross section and the entire tunnel section. As the developed system utilizes vast amounts of data, it was possible to promptly determine the shape of arbitrary cross section and to calculate the overbreak and underbreak more accurately with higher area precision. It is expected, therefore, that the system will not only enable more efficient and cost effective tunnel drilling management and monitoring but also will provide a basis for future construction and management of tunnel cross section.
A Study of Damage District Forecast by Imaginary Tsunami Scenario

In this study, we wished to forecast the damage district by tsunami's occurrence. For this, we analyzed tsunami that can happen in our country's neighborhood coast using past data, and established tsunami's scenario by imagination with analysis result. we created a 3D topographical model about study area and analyzed an inundation area by achieving simulation by scenario. Also, we produced an imaginary inundation map by overlaying the simulation results on digital map. This study result might be utilized as infra-technology for operation of tsunami's forecast/alarm system and establishment of disaster prevention policy.
Change Detection of a Small Town Area from Multi-Temporal Aerial Photos using Image Differencing and Image Ratio Techniques

This study presents the application of multi-temporal and multi-scale panchromatic aerial photos for change detection in a small urban area. For aerial photos of the scale of 1:20,000 taken in 1987 and 1996 and the scale of 1:37,500 taken in 2000. Pre-processing that make the same conditions to all of the aerial photos was carried out through geometric correction, registration, contrasting, resamplimg, and mosaicking and then change detection were carried out respectively by image differencing and image ratio techniques. As a result, the change of urban features and landcover were able to be detected from panchromatic aerial photos that is single-band images and then the detected change results were compared between both techniques.
A Habitat Analysis of the Historical Breeding Sites of Oriental White Storks(Ciconia boyciana) in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong Provinces, Korea

This research aims to produce basic data for developing habitat suitability models on the breeding sites of Oriental White Storks(Ciconia boyciana) which will be reintroduced to the wild in the future. The habitat characteristics of ten historical nesting sites of the Oriental White Storks at Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces in South Korea were analyzed with 1970's land use maps and Landsat MSS. The range of altitude on nesting sites was 40~116.38m. The mean distance from nesting sites to rice fields, to 30m wider river, and to reservoirs was
respectively. Historical nesting sites were located close to human settlements, and the mean distance of nesting sites to human settlements was
. The land types within 5km radius from ten historical nesting sites consisted of 53.7% forest, 28.3% rice fields, 16.7% grasslands, 0.8% water bodies, and 0.6% human settlements. The composition of four land types(forest, rice fields, grasslands, and human settlements) was significantly differed between 93 random points and 10 historical nesting sites.
Developing Framework Model for Economic Renewal and Exchange of Geo-Spatial Data - A Case Study of Daegu Metropolitan City -

Geo-special technologies are being adopted in variety fields since the 3rd NGIS plan that was started at 1996. However, the required system or structure to guarantee the up-to-date validity and accuracy of the geospatial data - the most fundamental elements of the technology - was not constructed yet. All the activities related to geospatial data, including topographical map and numerical base map, are all implemented in separate way; from change of geographical objects and features, data gathering, and database construction to distribution, transfer and sharing of these data. The data model that links all the activities are required that enables consistent data-flow and effective and systematic work-flow. In this study, economic data renewal and exchange method was proposed, and benefit-cost analysis was implemented by comparing the conventional work-flow to newly proposed work-flow. The case study was implemented using the model that was adopted in Daegu metropolitan city, and the model was developed by reflecting these results.
Application of Bivariate Spatial Association for the Quantitative Marine Environment Pattern Analysis

The quantitative bivariate spatial pattern analysis was applied for the water quality and nutrients data of Masan Bay, and for this analysis Pearson's r as aspatial correlation measurement, Moran's I as spatial association measurement and L index as integration of aspatial and spatial measurement methods were used. To understand the aspatial and spatial characteristics implicated in L index, Pearson's r as well as Moran's I were classified into 3 types respectively, and Pearson's r and Moran's I were combined with 9 types, and also quantile of L index value was used for each of those 9 types. Finally, these types were defined as 5 groups having not overlapped L index range. According to the application result of L index groups, bivariate water quality and nutrients showed no aspatial correlation regardless of spatial association in February and July, but they showed aspatial correlation having clustered spatial pattern in May and November. The result of this study providing the guideline for the interpretation of aspatial correlation and spatial association using L index is expected to be helpful for the marine environment pattern analysis using quantitative index for further study.
A Study on the Regional Regeneration Analysis for Urban Regeneration in Busan

The Urban Regeneration can improve physical, environment, economy, life and culture of retarded urban area to recover vitality and to recreate residing environment having competitiveness. This study constructed buildings database to investigate deterioration of buildings of each dong that was minimum administrative region classified for administrative convenience, and spatial structure analysis for Urban Regeneration in Busan. Legal standards have not been established yet. Therefore, the study conducted quantitative analysis based on the Law of Urban and Dwelling Environment Improvement as well as the Special Law of Promotion of Urban Reorganization to find out problems of existing legal systems and to make use of investigation results as basic material of Urban Regeneration project in the future. And, the study investigated physical deterioration of buildings, and characteristics and types of the variables such as population, welfare, business entities at each dong, that is to say, basic administration unit of the government through Factor-Analysis.
The Necessity of Coordinate System Education in Secondary School Curriculum

The purpose of this study is to look into the necessity of strengthening the knowledge base about longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system in secondary educational curriculum. GPS based location service increases the use of longitude and latitude coordinate system. And many developed countries including USA and Japan have already included this contents in secondary education curriculum. But the secondary school Curriculum of Korea does not include the detailed contents regarding longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system theory, and as a result the level of Korean students knowledge on this subject is low. The frequency of appearing of the information related to longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate systems in newspaper articles in Korea has been steadily increasing since after 2000. And a lot of articles appearing in newspapers provide the location information in the form of longitude and latitude coordinates, so the readers would be able to apply that. It was found out that the situation in schools is developed good enough for the use of spatial information system based upon the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system. The conclusion is that geography education in Korea needs systematical implementation of the knowledge base of longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system.
A Review on Journal of KAGIS Research Trends - Focus on the Published from 2001 to 2007 -

The purpose of this study is analyze to characteristics and research trend of geographic information system as reviewing research trend of KAGIS (Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies) journals published from 2001 to 2007. Also, 358 articles have been published and characteristic of a contributor attribute and research categories were analyzed. Professor and the research 94% hold and the contribution ratio of the relation enterprise worker appeared with the low. The results of this study will be useful for guidelines to establish NGIS and strategies.
