Hybrid Coding for Multi-spectral Satellite Image Compression

The hybrid coding algorithm for multi-spectral image obtained from satellite is discussed. As the spatial and spectral resolution of satellite image are rapidly increasing, there are enormous amounts of data to be processed for computer processing and data transmission. Therefore an efficient coding algorithm is essential for multi-spectral image processing. In this paper, VQ(vector quantization), quadtree decomposition, and DCT(discrete cosine transform) are combined to compress the multi-spectral image. VQ is employed for predictive coding by using the fact that each band of multi-spectral image has the same spatial feature, and DCT is for the compression of residual image. Moreover, the image is decomposed into quadtree structure in order to allocate the data bit according to the information content within the image block to improve the coding efficiency. Computer simulation on Landsat TM image shows the validity of the proposed coding algorithm.
Analysis of Regional Environment in the Nak-Dong River Watershed using Geographic Information System

Recently urbanization and industrialization around the Nak-dong river watershed have lead to the regional environmental problems. In this viewpoint, we took up variables which were related to watershed environment, and found out spatial and environmental properties of the Nak-dong river using factor analysis, ANOVA test and geographic information system. The results may be summarized as follows; three common factors which were named as urban, agricultural and industrial pollutant factor extracted from statistical methods. Spatial distribution of watershed environment could be found by connection attributes of factor scores derived from factor analysis to digital map using GIS. According to the results, distribution of pollutant sources were concentrated in the main stream of the Nak-dong river and its tributaries, Kum-ho river. So it is necessary to manage the watershed environment in due consideration of environmental carrying capacity.
A Forest Fire Prevention Mechanism using Geographic Information System - The case of Mt. Uam in Cheongju -

The forest fire covered with forest gets increasing year after year in Korea. Furthermore the scale becomes larger. A forest fire problem is extremely serious. In this situation this study discussed a forest fire prevention with scientific and systematic method. Various information was created using GIS for Mt. Uam, which is located in Uam, Cheongju city. The predictive model to enhance effective forest fire management was developed.
The Gradient Analysis of the Korean Peninsula by using DEM

The slope gradient of the Korean Peninsula was analyzed by using DEM(DTED level 1). The Peninsula has high percentages of gentle slopes. But low plains and very steep slope regions are scarcely distributed in the Peninsula. Altitude lower than 150m areas are composed of plains and undulated plains. The steepest and most rugged topographies are observed in the range of altitude from 500m to 1,000m areas. The areas of altitude greater than 1,000m show plateau landscapes. By overlapping digital geology maps and the gradient grade maps, We revealed the characteristics of slope regions by geological districts. High latitude with steep slope are well developed in the geological districts of granitic gneiss(ARgr) and gneiss(
) of the Pre-Cambrian, sandstone of the Paleozoic era(P-T), and sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era(
). Low altitude with gentle slope areas are representative in the districts of granite of the Mesozoic era(
), the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era(
) and the Cenozoic strata(N). Basalt extruded the Quaternary(
) are observed in the areas of very gentle slope but greater than 1,000m altitude.
An Analysis of Micro-landform and Its Grain Size of Tidal Flat in Gomso-Bay using Satellite Remote Sensing

Through the ISODATA method of unsupervised classification, the micro-landform of Gomso-Bay tidal flat was classified into mud, mixed, and sand flats by using Landsat TM image. Each tidal flat shows on apparent differences in its topographical characteristics and grain size compositions. Mud flat is occupied the innermost part of the tidal flat. Sand flat is distributed adjacent to the entrance of the bay, while the mixed one is located in the central part of the bay. Mud flat deposits have fine grain size, more than 4 in average mean phi, bad sorting, more than 1 phi in standard devation, and positive skewness. Mixed and sand flat deposits have coarse grain size, less than 4 average mean phi, good sorting, less than 1 phi in standard daviation, and negative skewness. Topographically, the mud flat consists of flat surfaces and dissected channels. The average depth of dissected channels is about 2 meters. Meanwhile, sand flat has a very flat landform with well-developed ripple marks of less than 10 centimeters in average relief. And the mixed one shows the intermediate topographical characteristics of those of mud and sand flats.
A Study on Coding Scheme for Street Trees Management Information System

The purpose of this study is to find the most effective method of the coding methods by linking the attribute information with the digital map in Taegu metropolitan city. This study was also a precedent plan for street trees management information system and the coding schemes for street trees management information system could be summarized as follows; First, this study extracted 11 coding factors for expressing the position of street trees. Second, 11 coding schemes were made out of these coding factors and applied to the digital map(1:500). Third, two methods of 11 coding schemes were selected for street trees management information system of Taegu metropolitan city. The one was the method which applied serial numbers according to the block name. The other was the method utilizing the concept of 'dynamic segment'. Finally, this study will be the first step for the computerization and management of the street trees information and this computerized data will do for the management efficiency of the street trees on internet.
Development of a Voice-activated Map Information Retrieval System based on MFC

In retrieving and analyzing digital map information using mouse or key strokes, it needs several times of repeated mouse operation for designating the range of study area. In this study, we proposed a voice activated map information retrieval system for eliminating such repetitions and we realized the system on the personal computer. The system was constructed in two ways - traditional OLE(object linking embedding) method and MFC(Microsoft fundamental class) method in controlling of window display for practical use. In the system performance evaluation, the retrieval data for digital map were consisted of 68 words uttered by 3 male persons which include attribute words and control words for Susung-gu area of Taegu city in a 1:5,000 map. As the results, we obtained the average 98.02% of recognition rate through on-line tests in the office environment and the operating speed of 5.39 seconds by OLE, 10.38 seconds by MFC. These results showed the possibility for practical use of information retrieval system using speech recognition in digital map.
