Integrated Simulation System of GIS and ANN for Land Price Appraisal
Moon, Tae-Heon ;
Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 1~10
The purpose of this study is to develope a parcel-based automatic simulation system of land price through the integration of urban mathematical model and GIS. The appraisal process of public land price by the local government is simple but is a great time-consuming task. Moreover, it doesn't provide any statistical analysis and spatial presentation tools. So, it is difficult for planners or administrative officials to analyze the variation of land price with spatial idea. From these, a system is developed combining two sub-systems, they are ANN(Artificial Neural Network) for the calculation of land price and GIS for visual presentation. Using Matlab application, ANN model was designed having 3-layer structure and was trained with the sample data taken from Chinju city. With the trained network, the impact of 'road', 'parks', 'height control district' and 'beauty district' on land price in 9 regions(dong) are simulated. The results of the simulation were visualized with ArcView GIS. The automatic simulation system operated through the DDE(Dynamic Data Exchange) conversation between two applications. ArcView was set as client and Matlab as server. Scripting in ArcView and customizing a window of ArcView, this system can execute the whole process of simulation by just clicking a button with mouse. As a conclusion, this system was proved to be an effective and easily controllable planning support system for the land price simulation.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 11~23
The subjects of this study are to examine and to apply the methods of making 1 : 10,000 scale digital maps using Russian's 2 m resolution satellite images of Alternative and 8 m resolution stereo satellite images of MK-4 for the Kyoha area of Paju-city where aerial-photo surveying is not possible. A digital elevation model (DEM) was calculated from MK-4 images. With this DEM, the Alternative images were orthorectified. Ground control points (GCP) were acquired from GPS surveyings and were used to perform geometric corrections on Alternative images. From field investigation, thematic attributes are digitized on the monitor. RMS errors of the planar and vertical positions are estimated to
m, respectively. The planar accuracy is better than an accuracy required by NGIS (national GIS) programs. Local information from field investigation was added and the resulting maps should be good as base maps for, such as, regional and urban plannings.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 24~36
This study deals with the optimal method of orthophoto products using the non-photogrammetric scanners. we scanned positive film of aerial photographs at the different resolution and producted the orthophoto using the automatically generated DEM based on the Digital Photogrammetric Workstation, considering aerial image resolutions, DEM interval, resampling method and outpixel size. As a results, the acquired accuracy was worse in horizontal, but good in vertical. So It will be expected that orthophoto using non-photo grammetric scanner is good enough for the acquisition of GIS data and the calculation of soil volumes.
An Analysis of the Regional Characteristics in Agropolitan Cities for Sustainable Development
Park, Kyung-Hun ; Jung, Sung-Kwan ; Choi, Won-Myeung ;
Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 37~47
Since 1995, agropolitan cities have been created, in order to pursue the balanced development between urban cities and its surrounding rural counties. However, the inequality of regional level that was caused by indiscreet development has become the ever-serious problems recently. Therefore, this study aims to analyze regional characteristics and patterns for setting up the sustainable spatial planning. Firstly, the regional characteristics were summarized by five factors; development-oriented factor, agricultural factor, living environmental factor, rice growing, fruit gardening factor. The regional patterns were classified with five patterns using cluster analysis; orchard farming, farming of medium and small size, small stagnation, under urbanization, mixed urban-rural properties, and industry of southeastern seashore. Accuracy of the results by discrimination analysis showed that pattern II, V, and VI were confidence level of 100%, but the others had nearly 90% confidence level.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 48~60
This study is aimed to clarify the distribution chracteristics of marine terraces and extract the specific surface at Gampo-eup, Gyeongju city on the map of 1:5,000 using GIS. The effects and problems occurred on the process of using GIS were investigated for the research of marine terrace. The longitudinal profile analysis was carried out along the 12 sections on the geomorphic surfaces of the study area, and actually High higher surface(HH-surface) was found over 100m a.s.l., which has not been reported till now. And the occupancy rate could be calculated by substitution on the height between 4m and 87m a.s.l. for each mean slope degree
obtained from the actual measuring along four sections. Consequently the lower-I surface was highly reliable to use as the key bed for studying marine terraces. The accurate and detail analysis about the marine terraces is able to be accomplished on the basis of meaningful actual measuring, though its general possible distribution area can be extracted from GIS with the less effort. Namely the quantified results obtained from GIS could offer the basis for the objective analysis of the geomorphic surfaces. And we can look over the landscape and investigate the surfaces with reliefs effectively in relation to the real geomorphology on the study area, where in situ approach is difficult. But the digital map with a large scale should be offered first of all in order to raise the accuracy of the analysis.
Developing a Hybrid Web-based GIS for Improving Access to Distributed Spatial Data and Spatial Modeling Tools

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 61~72
The maturation of the Web technology has reshaped the ways in which data are accessed, disseminated, and shared. Thanks to its popularity along with the advance of spatial information technology, four major changes have been further made in traditional geographic information systems (GIS) in relation to access to data, distribution of data, access to GIS functionality, and visualization of multimedia data. Although access to and dissemination of spatial data over the Web has in recent years been addressed in the literature, little research effort has addressed the issue of access to and processing of GIS analysis functions over the Web. This research explores the potential use of Web-based GIS in improving accessibility to distributed spatial data and spatial modeling tools. A prototype Web-based GIS developed in this study focuses on Web-based location-allocation modeling for spatial decision support, and employs a hybrid approach that uses the Arc/Info software as a GIS server and CGM viewer as a client-side plug-in. This research shows that Web-based GIS is a useful vehicle in conducting spatial modeling in the particular user community. In addition, this study represents the possibility of Web-based GIS in developing open spatial decision supporting systems.
Land Cover Change: A Regional Context, Asia, 1983~1994
Seong, Jeong-Chang ;
Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 3, issue 2, 2000, Pages 73~86
Using monthly AVHRR-NDVI composite images, global vector data and statistical information, land cover change patterns in Asia during the major growing season (June, July and August) were analyzed for each country. Specifically, explanations on NDVI changes were developed at a regional scale emphasizing human impacts on ground vegetation. The annual mean change in each country showed NDVI-gain trends in high latitude areas and some parts of eastern China and northern/western India. On the contrary, NDVI-loss trends were distinctive in Japan, Korea, some parts of southeastern China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and some parts in southwestern/eastern India. These patterns largely coincided with socio-economic information reflected by human behavior. The NDVI change trends showed significant correlation with forest area changes. Also, a multiple regression model showed that the NDVI change patterns were significantly dependent on the changes in forest area and total population.
