Comparison between TRMM/PR and Ground-Based Radar

Comparison between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and the C-band doppler radar at Cheju, Kunsan and Pusan, operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), is conducted for validation of the surface precipitation structure, and for calibration of KMA radar instrument. Data used in validation was selected for seven rain events in the south region of about
and at TRMM overflight in Korea, during the summer season of 2000. Quantitatively comparing radar reflectivities from two different platforms that have different view angles, bandwidths and frequencies is a challenging task. For the comparison, the precipitation patterns are projected on the same area for TRMM PR. Through the comparison, it is realized that the reflectivity from ground-based radar is under estimated, compared to TRMM/PR observations. We discuss that is underestimation may be produced by many factors(system performance, topography, etc).
Analysis of GIUH Model using River Branching Characteristic Factors

The purpose of this research was to develop a model that minimizes time and money for deriving topographical property factors and hydro-meteorological property factors, which are used in interpreting flood flow, and that makes it possible to forecast rainfall-runoff using a least number of factors. That is, the research aimed at suggesting a runoff interpretation method that considers the river branching characteristics but not the topographical and geological properties and the land cover conditions, which had been referred in general. The subject basin of the research was the basin of Yeongcheon Dam located in the upper reaches of the Kumho River. The parameters of the model were derived from the results of abstracting topological properties out of rainfall-runoff observation data about heavy rains and Digital Elevation Modeling(DEM). According to the result of examining calculated peak runoff, the Clark Model and the GIUH Model showed relative errors of 1.9~23.9% and 0.8~11.3%, respectively and as a whole, the peak values of hydrograph appeared high. In addition, according to the result of examining the time when peak runoff took place, the relative errors of the Clark Model and the GIUH Model were 0.5~1 and 0~1 hour respectively, and as a whole, peak flood time calculated by the GIUH Model appeared later than that calculated by the traditional Clark Model.
Ecological Effect Area Research of DMZ using NDVI

The purpose of this study is to estimate the ecological effect of DMZ for development and conservation of this area. Because of the political reason, field research and estimation of the ecological effect using field data is very difficult. Then we carried out the estimation of the ecological effect using Landsat ETM+ and ancillary data of digital maps. Because of military disturbance and agricultural activity of common people, NDVI of DMZ was very low value except the interior area of DMZ. According to the distance of DMZ, the variance of NDVI didn't show the logistic curve. This result has the reason as follows. The developing force at level plane of west and middle area reached to DMZ and we could concluded in that case of east area had been effect of regular cutting for view.
A Study on Present Condition and Policy Direction of GIS Education

Although GIS technology has been developed rapidly, the education system for GIS technology and its utilization has not been well facilitated in our society. Consequently, the economic value in GIS application system is not estimated properly in the public sector. On the other hand, industries currently suffer lack of technocrats or researchers to develop GIS. In addition, the demand for GIS education on its concept and know-how has increased drastically as GIS analytic technology has come to be applied to more varified fields. Under these circumstances, this study researched and analyzed the current state of GIS education in the public, private and academic sectors in Korea. Furthermore, it recommended improving the educational environment for GIS experts training based on the results of the questionnaire used in the survey. Most of all, the national investment should be conducted systematically in order to improve quality of education in the public, private and academic sectors.
Assignment of Zoning and Analysis of Land Use using Geographic Information System Database - A Case Study of Saga City in Japan -

The purpose of this study is to suggest the way of analyzing land uses to utilize GIS in the field of urban planning. The Saga Land Information System was built in early 1990s. The building data were inputted by house investigation map(1/1,000) using digitizer. And urban planning basis investigation data in 1994 were utilized as the attribute data. Also, by calculating specialization factor, we distinct the characteristic of every land use of the city, and it compares every land use zone. This study calculated and compared an observation frequency and an expectation frequency of every building use and land use zone. We found that the use of the building tend to be controlled and guided by the land use zone.
A Study on the Method of GIS Standard Development through Profiling

In order to establish and promote geographic information activities in controled environment maximizing interoperability and the degree of reusability of geographic information resources scattered in distributed platforms, standardization is recognized as one of the basic solutions essentially being performed at the community level, where intends to align with international standards. This paper describes some technical aspects of standardization needed to build a systematic mechanism of national geographic information standards development, giving approach to conceptual analysis especially directed by ISO(International Organization for Standardization). Following some enumerated benefits for profile based national standard architecture and the brief review from canadian approach we suggest herein a overview of national and community level standardization framework, which identify its primary elements consisting of common basis for standard development mechanism based on profiles.
Application of XML to Develop GUI within Satellite Imageries Search System

The purpose of this study is to develop an XML based GUI that can search for satellite image information which is converted to XML data format and stored in the database server on the web, and modify and reuse data. In order to implement these functions efficiently, we used a DOM interface of XML that increases the efficiency of accessing the document structure. We used HTML and Java script programming to facilitate this interface. The system was applied to the management system of satellite images in the Research Institute of SFC at Keio University. Our results confirmed the technical functionalities.
A Study on the Accuracy of GPS Received Data in Travel Vehicle

The introduction of GPS technique in transportation study make real time tracking of driving vehicle's position possible. Position information data gauged with three dimension(X, Y, Z) can be achieved with time-continuity and from more than two driving vehicles. For this field of study, in past day, there were many difficulties in collecting real time data, but now, it becomes easy thanks to this. But for the resonable result analysis, fully understanding of GPS data-accuracy must be proceeded. Because accompanied magnitude of error depends on the study's accuracy. For this reason, this study surveyed the GPS data's error and suggest calibrate technique. This study's result will be helpful for following studies using DGPS data. For this, this study takes two types study in road, and set triangulation coordinates, and compare it with GPS data. DGPS data contains less than 0.6m's error.
Approaching Method for Detecting Vessels in the Korean Waters using the Panchromatic Imagery of IRS-1C Satellite

The feasibility of counting number of small vessels and position in Korean waters using the panchromatic imageries derived from the IRS-1C was tested. The parameters for interpretation of satellite's imageries of small vessels were location(position), size, shape, shadow, tone, texture and pattern, height and depth, situation and association with other vessels. The position of small vessels in the sea without GCP(ground control point) was considered to be inclusive in the satellite imagery with 35 km semi-diameter, denoting rough geographical position of the vessel. The size of vessel was measured by length from stem to stern of the vessel, distinguished by following wave on the surface water. Offshore fishing vessels were separated from merchant ships by their length smaller than 100 m. The shape of vessels on panchromatic imagery of IRS-1C appeared just streamline. In case of clouds which were similar to the shape of small vessels, we were able to distinguish between vessel and cloud by shadow of cloud in the water surface. The tone of sea surface was dark black while small vessel appeared bright white. Small vessel was distinguished from the rough texture of the sea surface and the regular pattern of the waves with white capes when weather was not so good. The situation of the fishing activity was estimated by information of fishing method related to the fishing boat such as the pair trawl in the Yellow Sea.
Developing Forest Fire Status Information Management System using Web GIS Technology

In this paper forest fire status information management system was developed under web environment using web GIS(geographic information system) technology. Though this system, general users can easily retrieval domestic forest fire status information and obtain that in visual way such as maps, graphs, and texts if they have only certain web browsers. Moreover, officials, who have system access authority, can easily control and manage all domestic forest fire status information through input interface, retrieval interface, and out interface of the system. This system can be considered as the first domestic system to manage forest fire status data and service them in visual through user friendly interfaces on web. In order to implement this system, IIS 5.0 of Microsoft is used as web server and Oracle 8i and ASP(active server page) are used for database construction and dynamic web page operation, respectively. Also, ArcGIS IMS(internet map server) of ESRI is used to serve maps by using Java and HTML as system development languages. Not only the domestic tendency of forest fire but also the forest fire status information of certain area and time such as the frequency and the loss can be presented through distribution maps, graphs and tables. Therefore, this system is supposed to play as a important role when the policy relate to domestic forest fire is established. In addition, the self consciousness of people against forest fire can be inspired and the foundation of scientific and systemic forest fire services can be obtained through this system in the future.
Establishing the Managerial Boundary of the Baekdu-daegan: An Approach by Watershed Expanding Process

In recent years, synthetic and systematic management with conservation-oriented strategy for Baekdu-daegan, which is the greatest chine as well as the major ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula, is being required to cope adequately with the various kinds of developmental urge. For this, spatially definite zoning for the managerial area on Baekdu-daegan has to be completed first. This study is to take into consideration the traditional concepts of stream and watershed as well as the actual disturbance on Daegan area, and to propose the process for reasonably establishing the managerial boundary adjacent to the Ridges. The case site with topographically diverse characteristics was selected, and the analyses on watershed, road network and land use were carried out using the digital maps and Landsat TM images. Based on these analyses results, the managerial boundaries as alternatives from the Ridges were produced by watershed expansion process, and used for tracing the changes of road occupancy rate and the areal ratio of various land use types to the relevant watersheds to search out the adequate managerial boundary. The results show that watershed expansion process could be effective tool for establishing the managerial boundary, and the fourth expanded watershed would be included for the adequate managerial boundary of the case site.
