The Analysis of Optimum Resolution with Different Scale of Soil Map for the Calculation of Soil Loss

RUSLE(revised universal soil loss equation) has been widely used for estimating soil loss. It is very difficult to validate the model estimation since the calculated soil loss should be compared with the survey data for quantification. The input variables for RUSLE model were estimated to grid cell for raster analysis in Bosung basin. Both reconnaissance(1:250,000) and detailed(1:25,000) soil maps were used to derive the input variables for soil erodibility factor. Soil loss calculated using RUSLE were compared to the unit sediment deposit surveyed by KICT(Korea Institute of Construction Technology, 1992) in Bosung basin for assessment. Unit sediment deposit from the cell size of 120m and 150m were the closest to the survey data in 1:250,000 and 1:25,000 map scale, respectively.
The Study of Landscape Fragmentation for the Urban Landscape Planning

Many-sided approach methods are being demanded to solve environmental problems in urban areas. One of these methods will be to manage forests scattered in urban areas efficiently. This paper is to grasp the change of land use and landscape indices in Mt. Ap, Daegu, and to analyze the change of landscape structure. Mt. Ap is near Daegu Metropolitan, so under unnatural interferences of human activity persistently. The results of above analysis run as follows: First, the north of the case area is connected to forest, and keeps stable equilibrium ecologically, while the other parts of it suffer from rural exodus and side effects of urbanization which has been completed since 1980. Second, according to the area-rate change of each landscape element, a cultivated areas has been converted into urban one, especially Pinus densiflora forests and paddy fields into mixed forests and urban areas. Finally, most of plantations have been converted into deciduous forests and mixed forests in failure of adaption of plants in burned areas rather than owing to factitious interference.
3D Visualization Approaches for Evaluating Location Solution Performances

This paper discusses the design of location optimization visualization and feasibility of 3 dimensional visualization techniques. In generic GIS visualization of location analysis, 2 dimensional visualization techniques have been used to map location elements and model solution, such as displaying demand and supply points, drawing connecting lines(e. g. spider line) of optimal locations to their demands, and representing density of location variations. Nevertheless, current GIS and location analysis literatures have little attentions in 3D visualization applications for location optimization problems. Previous research has been neglected 3D visualization of solution performances and its evaluation of solution quality. Consequently, this paper demonstrates potential benefits of 3D visualization techniques and its appropriate GIS applications for location optimization analysis. The visualization effectiveness of 3D approaches is examined in terms of spatial accessibility, and solution performance of optimal location models is evaluated. Finally, this paper proposes extensive 3D visualization perspectives for location analysis and GIS research as a further research agenda.
Comparison and Evaluation on DEM Error by the Resolution of Airborne Laser Scanning Data

As airborne laser scanning technique is developed with high vertical accuracy recently, there come many studies on DEM(digital elevation model creation, building extraction, flood risk mapping and 3D virtual city modeling. This study applied point comparative method, contour comparative method and digital map with scale 1/5,000 to calculate RMSE of DEM in according to resolution that was constructed using rawdata being acquired by airborne laser scanning. As a result, point comparative method showed lower DEM standard error than contour comparative method, it is a reason that contour comparative method was not carried out detailed grid calculation for point comparative method. Also, digital map with scale 1/5,000 showed higher DEM standard error than point comparative method and contour comparative method in below 25.4m that is average horizontal distance among contour line, and showed similar result with contour comparative method in over 25.4m.
A Study on Constructive Methods of the Cultural Information System using GIS

The purpose of this study is to seek the methods of constructing a cultural information system based on GIS. It is impossible for regional culture to be formed apart from its surrounding space, so a study of culture should be based on realizing the features of its space. It is important to note that the elements composing a culture complicatedly interact with each other in their function and continuously change. Also they are interrelated in space and plentiful in their amount. Nevertheless, those studies practised so far in relation to culture and constructing cultural database are too limited in establishing cultural area or community life area required to recognize the regional identity. So it is now essential that we should study the methods of cultural expression surpassing objective historical and cultural site maps instead of simple maps depicting historical remains or sites. From this viewpoint, this study tries to find various cultural phenomena in relation to their space through seeking the methods of constructing the cultural database model using XML. In addition, this study tries to construct a base for increasing the utilization of information in making the cultural contents.
Extraction of Gravity-typed Accessibility Index using Remotely Sensed Imagery and Its Application

Recently, demands with practical applications using high resolution imagery are increasing, according to addressing new sensor data. Since late 1990s, attempts for application to transportation problems of satellite imagery data have been intensively carried out in US, and these kinds of studies are being categorized into the name of RS-T(remote sensing in transportation). Further, this study is also linked with GIS-T(GIS for transportation), being in the matured stage, and then it contributes to wide uses of remotely sensed imagery. In this study, RS-T is briefly summarized. Later, in order to apply urban transportation analysis with satellite imagery as ancillary data, implementation, as prototyped extension program, for extraction of gravity-typed accessibility indices of transportation geography is performed in the ArcView-GIS environment. It is thought that applied results by two models among implemented models in this study can be utilized to characterize transportation accessibility in a region and to apply as useful statistics related to urban transportation status for regional transportation planning, if time series data are used.
Developing a Work Procedure for Efficient Map Generalization

This paper proposes a work procedure for generalizing large-scale digital maps ver. 2.0(1/5,000) into a small-scale digital map(1/25,000). Unlike a existent digital map, the digital map ver. 2.0 has a variety of attribute data as well as graphic data. To perform an efficient map generalization with these structural properties, we establish a work procedure as follow; firstly, delete layers which don't exist in small-scale digital map's feature code, and secondly, generalize features which have been classified into 8 layers, and finally merge 8 layers which have been generalized into 1 layer. Therefore, we expect that a work procedure which is proposed in this paper will play a fundamental role in automated generalization system and will contribute to small-scale digital mapping and thematic mapping.
Landuse Classification Nomenclature for Urban Growth Analysis using Satellite Imagery

All the urban planning process require land use informations, which should be obtained after through intensive investigation and accurate analysis about the past and current situations and conditions of a city. Until now, the generation of land use informations from remotely sensed imagery has had many limitation because of its spatial resolution. It is now expected that the availability of high resolution satellite imagery whose spatial resolution less than 10m will reduce these limitations. For the purpose of urban growth monitoring we must first establish a urban land use classification nomenclature. In this study, we would like to establish a land use nomenclature for land use classification using remotely sensed data, especially using KOMPSAT EOC imagery.
The Evaluation of Architectural Density on Urban District using Airborne Laser Scanning Data

This study evaluated the architectural density of urban district using airborne laser scanning(ALS) that is a method used in urban planning, water resources and disaster prevention with high interest recently. First, digital elevation model(DEM) and digital surface model(DSM) was constructed from Light detection and ranging(LiDAR). For getting the height of building, ZONALMEAN filter was used in DEM and ZONALMAJORITY filter was used in DSM. This study compared the floor from filtering with the floor from survey and got standard error, which is
floor. Also, through the overlay and statistical analysis of total-area layer and zone layer, we could present floor area ratio by zone. As a result of comparison with floor area ratio between airborne laser scanning data and survey data, the standard error of floor area ratio shows
. Therefore, we expect that airborne laser scanning data can be a very efficient source to decision makers who set up landuse plan in near future.
An Empirical Study on the Land Cover Classification Method using IKONOS Image

This study investigated how appropriate the classification methods based on conventional spectral characteristics are for high resolution imagery. A supervised classification mixing parametric and non-parametric rules, a method in which fuzzy theory is applied to such classification, and an unsupervised method were performed and compared to each other for accuracy. In addition, comparing the result screen-digitized through interpretation to the classification result using spectral characteristics, this study analyzed the conformity of both methods. Although the supervised classification to which fuzzy theory was applied showed the best performance, the application of conventional classification techniques to high resolution imagery had some limitations due to there being too much information unnecessary to classification, shadows, and a lack of spectral information. Consequently, more advanced techniques including integration with other advanced remote sensing technologies, such as lidar, and application of filtering or template techniques, are required to classify land cover/use or to extract useful information from high resolution imagery.
An Analysis of Landscape Type Characteristics using the Technology of GIS and Remote Sensing

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the landscape type on Chunchon by CG(computer graphics) pictures and visibility analysis. The land use CG picture and the land cover CG picture are created by using Zoning area data and DEM(digital elevation model), and by using data of land cover classification and DEM. According to the analysis result of the land cover from 1989 to 2000, the city area has increased to

. The tendency of the city area increases and the green area decreases which appear in the city area, developmental restriction zone and green area on land use. The landscape is classified into three types by cluster analysis using the area rate of the element which constitutes the land use CG picture. Type 1 is a landscape characteristics of developmental restriction zone. Type 2 is a landscape characteristics of green land and type 3 is a landscape characteristics based on city area and water area. The increase of city area and decrease of green area are shown in all landscape types of land cover CG pictures. The same tendency is seen in the place where the scenery is of high importance as a result of visible analysis. The preservation and management of the scenery to the green area are requird in developmental restriction zone are required.
Application of a Hydroinformatic System for Calibration of a Catchment Modelling System

A new methodology for selecting spatially variable model control parameter values through consideration of inference models within a Hydroinformatic system has been developed to overcome problems associated with determination of spatially variable control parameter values for both ungauged and gauged catchment. The adopted Hydroinformatic tools for determination of control parameter values were a GIS(Arc/Info) to handle spatial and non-spatial attribute information, the SWMM(stormwater management model) to simulate catchment response to hydrologic events, and lastly, L_BFGS_B(a limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm) to assist in the calibration process. As a result, high accuracy of control parameter estimation was obtained by considering the spatial variations of the control parameters based on landuse characteristics. Also, considerable time and effort necessary for estimating a large number of control parameters were reduced from the new calibration approach.
Relationships between Spatio-temporal Distribution of Cochlodinium polykrikoides Red Tide and Meso-scale Variation of Oceanographic Environment around the Korean Waters

There was a close relationship between spatio-temporal distribution of Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide and meso-scale variation of oceanographic environment around the Korean waters. Oceanographic conditions of Narodo island, where red tide usually first occurred during summer seasons were formation of the thermohaline frontal zone from 1995 to 2001. Huge C. polykrikoides red tides were observed in every uneven year during the past 7 years (1995~2001) and quasi-biennial oscillation also occurred in the oceanographic variations of sea surface temperature and salinity in the northern part of the East China Sea during the same years. The distribution area and moving pattern of C. polykrikoides red tides were definitely depended on the temporal and spatial variation of upwelling cold water originated form the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula in summer season.
Satellite Remote Sensing to Monitor Seasonal Horizontal Distribution of Resuspended Sediments in the East China Sea

The spatiotemporal distribution of resuspended solid on the shelf of the southern Yellow Sea and the northern East China Sea was studied. The sea surface reflectance imageries obtained by remote sensing using satellite at channels of red (620~670nm), green(545~565nm) and blue(459~479nm) from Terra MODIS were used to explain the front of the high concentration suspended solid(SS) on the shelf in the East China Sea. The horizontal distribution of the resuspended solid was depended on the wind force, tidal current and stratification of water. The horizontal distribution areas of the resuspended solid in winter season during January~April, 2002 were three times wider than those in summer season during June~September, 2001.
