Kim, Kyung-Tak ; Choi, Yun-Seok ;
Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 7, issue 2, 2004, Pages 1~15
For the simulation of flow phenomenon that calculate basin outflow, it is required to estimate effective precipitation which contributes to direct runoff. This paper is focused on using detailed soil map which is one of the data required to estimate effective precipitation by SCS CN method. Korean detailed soil map must be reclassified as SCS hydrologic soil group when it is applied to SCS CN method. In this study, Korean detailed soil maps which are reclassified as SCS hydrologic soil group by the methods of Her and Jung (1987) and Jung et al. (1995) are applied to flow simulation and the results are analyzed. The study sites are Wichon watershed and Pyungchang river basin which are studied by International Hydrological Program(IHP). HEC-1 and WMS v6.1 are used to simulate flow phenomenon and calculate geographic parameters. The difference of flow analysis results from each soil reclassification method is different from each sites. But the results of flow analysis approximate observed data by using Jung et al. (1995) method more than Her and Jung (1987) method.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 7, issue 2, 2004, Pages 16~28
A seam-line determination algorithm is proposed to determine image border-line in mosaicing using the transformation of gray value differences and dynamic programming. Since visually good border-line is the one along which pixel differences are as small as possible, it can be determined in association with an optimal path finding algorithm. A well-known effective optimal path finding algorithm is the Dynamic Programming (DP). Direct application of the dynamic programming to the seam-line determination causes the distance effect, in which seam-line is affected by its length as well as the gray value difference. In this paper, an adaptive cost transform algorithm with which the distance effect is suppressed is proposed in order to utilize the dynamic programming on the transformed pixel difference space. Also, a figure of merit which is the summation of fixed number of the biggest pixel difference on the seam-line (SFBPD) is suggested as an evaluation measure of seamlines. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested in both quantitively and visually on various kinds of images.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 7, issue 2, 2004, Pages 29~36
The purpose of this study is to analyze DMB(digital multimedia broadcasting) technologies of transmitting GIS-based traffic information for developing DMB systems compared with FM DARC(FM data radio channel). R&D and standardizations for transmitting GIS-based traffic information have been rapidly changed, as radical developments in ITS(intelligent transportation systems), telemaics, and communication methods such as ubiquitous and convergences of broadcasting and communications. Each communication method employs different GIS format, protocol, and standardizations, i.e., GML(geography markup language) and TPEG(transport protocol experts group). This paper presents technical methods and trends of transmitting traffic information using broadcasting along with FM DARC, in general, and DMB, in particular.

In order to decrease the area damaged by forest fires and to prevent the occurrence of forest fires, we are making an effort to improve prevention measures for forest fires. The objective of this study is to classify hazard regions where forest fires occur based on the factors that contribute to the occurrence of forest fires. Forest fire sites in the Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed according to the factors of forest type and topographic characteristics where the forest fires occurred. We used a correlation analysis to determine the forest fire occurrence factors and a conditional probability analysis and GIS to determine a forest fire danger index. The resulting forest fire danger index was used in the classification of forest fire occurrence risk regions.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 7, issue 2, 2004, Pages 47~56
The purpose of this study is to estimate soil loss amount according to the rainfall-runoff erosivity factor frequency and to analyze the hazard zone that has high possibilities of soil erosion in the watershed. RUSLE was used to analyze soil loss quantity. The study area is Gwanchon that is part of Seomjin river basin. To obtain the frequency rainfall-runoff erosivity factor, the daily maximum rainfall data for 39 years was used. The probability rainfall was calculated by using the Normal distribution, Log-normal distribution, Pearson type III distribution, Log-Pearson type III distribution and Extreme-I distribution. Log-Pearson type III was considered to be the most accurate of all, and used to estimate 24 hours probabilistic rainfall, and the rainfall-runoff erosivity factor by frequency was estimated by adapting the Huff distribution ratio. As a result of estimating soil erosion quantity, the average soil quantity shows 12.8 and
, respectively from 2 years to 200 years frequency. The distribution of soil loss quantity within a watershed was classified into 4 classes, and the hazard zone that has high possibilities of soil erosion was analyzed on the basis of these 4 classes. The hazard zone represents class IV. The land use area of class IV shows
, it ranges 0.02-9.06% of total farming area. Especially, in the case of a frequency of 200 years, the field area occupies 77.1% of total fanning area. Accordingly, it is considered that soil loss can be influenced by land cover and cultivation practices.

Recently in order to more effectively and scientifically process forest official tasks, which have been focused on documents and inventories, they should be applied with the up-to-date spatial information technologies. Especially, the forest resource information management based on GIS(geographic information system) and aerial orthophoto is expected not only to play an important role as DSS(decision support system) for domestic forest conservation policy and forestry development industry but also to service forest resource information toward people such as the owners of a mountain rapidly. In this study, the important forest information such as digital topography map, digital forest type map, digital forest cadastral map, digital aerial photographs and attribute data were first reprocessed and constructed in DBMS(data base management system). In addition, forest officials could analyze and retrieve forest information by using detail sub-application systems such as forest cadastral retrieval, forest land development information management, reserved forest information management and forest resource information retrieval. For this, the user interface is developed by using Visual Basic 6.0 and MapObjects 2.1 of ESRI based on CBD(component based development) technology. The result of developing this system will not only perform constructing economical forest and better environment but also be the foundation of domestic spatial technology for forest resource management.

Now, there are some problems to manage underground facilities in domestic. Specially, in the case of KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation), it is so difficult to manage electronic line more stably and detailedly because the geographic information and attribute information being built is not easy to be updated in the field. KEPCO officials who are accompanying management and supervision in earthwork do not have sufficient knowledge and information about GIS but they grasp the information of geography and property which coincide with the field. Therefore they have to refer their business analysis contents sufficiently for more efficient lines management in the KEPCO, but it is problem that the existing information of electronic lines management system is not. In this study, we constructed power transmission and power distribution underground facility management system for the user to manage and maintain underground facilities more easily and safely using the information of geography and property about power transmission and power distribution underground facility which have been built by KEPCO.

Recently GPS and mobile GIS technologies based on LBS(location based service) have played an important role as DSS(decision supporting system) for domestic forest fire extinguishment policies. In this study forest fire extinguishments information management system based on mobile GIS technique was designed to seize the exact location on wireless network so that it helps to guide the safe and efficient extinguishments affairs and provide the extinguishments environment toward ground fighting teams and the central forest government in real time. Moreover, possibly to operate this system, the foundation technologies by the name of '.gci' such as the spatial data compression method, the spatial data transmission method over wireless network and the spatial analysis interface on PDA should be mainly considered. Especially, in this study the spatial data compression method having high compression rate from 51% to 62% for each polygon, line, and point data, without the loss of data was developed.

Journal of the Korean Association of Geographic Information Studies, volume 7, issue 2, 2004, Pages 87~96
When watershed spatial database is constructed from DEM, hydrological geographic characteristics of watershed can be easily extracted. And the characteristics can be assigned and managed as the attribute of spatial database. In this study the scheme of constructing framework spatial database which is basic information for managing watershed information is examined. We established framework spatial data and defined the relationship of the data. And framework spatial database of test site was constructed. In this study, HyGIS(Hydrological Geographic Information System) which is developed by domestic technology for making hydrological spatial data and developing water resources system is used. Hydrological geographic characteristics and spatial data is extracted by HyGIS. And the data from HyGIS is used for constructing framework spatial database of test site. Finally, this study suggests the strategy of constructing framework spatial database for developing watershed management system based on river network.
