An Evaluation of the Uncertainty of Pressure Measurement Systems
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 15~23
Uncertainty components and evaluation of the system of pressure measurement are presented in this paper. Since early in 1980s, measurement uncertainty is getting more important due to ISO/IEC 17025, which is established for international test and calibration laboratories. Up to now it is true that accuracy, precision, error and etc. have been commonly used in industry to define the amount of error to the products and equipment, but these terms ought to be united into uncertainity in the future. This paper describes how to indicate measurement uncertainty and types of measurement errors, and then shows the evaluation result of measurement system using piezoelectric pressure transducers.
Performance Comparison of Baseband Modulation Methods in DS-CDMA Communication System
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 24~36
It is important to use frequency resource effectively to support much more users, to maximize the DS-CDMA system performance. In this paper, we use MPSK, QAM, MFSK and PR coder as a baseband modulation method for DS-CDMA system. Increasing user's number, we compare the performance of each system using different baseband modulation method, by expecting BER performance. BPSK has generally good performance, in case of low power operation of terminal 8FSK has excellent performance relatively, PR has excellent performance when high power operation of terminal and also good for situation of excessive user's number. QAM is not suitable for DS-CDMA system.
A Performance Analysis on the Time Spread Highlight Synthesized Models for Underwater Active Target
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 37~44
An echo signal in the active sonar using a high frequency is mainly formed of a specular reflection from the surface of an object along with several equivalent scatter inside, which are characterized by the spatial distribution of the highlights on the object. This thesis proposed a model in which the synthesized echo signal can be expressed as a distributed simulated target. The proposed model is obtained after composing a signal based on the movement of highlights relative to the aspect angle from the discontinuous point of an external hull with a strong reflection from a spheroid underwater target. Because the proposed algorithm includes a synthesis of the signals related to the highlight spacial distribution, it can be applied to all kinds of systems used at a short range, and similar results were obtained to the actual measured results of all reflected signals in previous literature referring to the irregular factor application of an envelope.
Circuit Design of Drive Control for Winch Drum
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 45~58
In this paper, we designed the circuit of drive control for towing winch. It is composed of reference voltage circuit for driving voltage reference, low pass filter circuit for noise reduction, dead zone circuit for initial transient input, and driving circuit for drum direction/velocity control. Also it is realized a drive control circuit for towing winch drum in accordance with PWM(pulse width modulation) method to suit it's purpose of a large capacity driving system. The performance of the designed circuit is analyzed by experiments and the appliablity for driving the towing winch drum satisfactorily is evaluated through a various testing.
Implementation of the omnidirectional target bearing detector utilizing towed linear arrays
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 59~64
Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise(S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. Detection of modern underwater targets is becoming increasingly difficult as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions. Therefore, the improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets at the long range in the complex environmental sea. Also, to react to the fast attack mobiles such as torpedoes, port and starboard discrimination is required to be performed very quickly. In this paper, we proposed the implementation of omnidirectional target bearing detector without port and starboard ambiguity to detect effectively the low-level underwater targets. The port and starboard discrimination is performed by cardioid processing and the improvement of beamforming utilizes the cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. The sea test result shows that the system implemented is good for the detection of the low-level underwater targets.
A Link Analysis and Selection of a Receive Antenna Angle in Telemetry Systems
Dhong Woon Jang ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 65~74
A three dimension(3D) link analysis is peformed considering multipath effects caused by a reflected signal and the difference angle between the antenna bore-sight and Line-Of-Sight(LOS). In addition, a direction of a receive antenna is determined for a receiver to get maximum signal strength in a telemetry situation. For a fixed receive antenna, the angle is determined to maximize the average Carrier to Noise Ratio(CNR) over the interested part of a trajectory. For a tracking antenna, the angle at every position is selected to give maximum CNR or to direct the boresight to the flying projectile.
Robust PID Controller Design for Speed Control of BLDC Motors
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 75~82
In this paper, the robust PID(Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller was designed for speed control of BLDC motors using the frequency region model matching method. It was designed the robust PID controller satisfying disturbance attenuation and robust tracking performance using an H
control method. The robust PID controller gains with the performances of the designed H
controller are determined using the model matching method at frequency domain. Consequently, simulation results show that the proposed PID speed controller satisfies load torque disturbance attenuation and robust tracking performance, and this study has usefulness and applicability for the speed control system design of BLDC motors.
An Analysis of Thermal Conductivity of Ceramic Fibrous Insulator by Modeling & Simulation Method I
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 83~95
Thermal conductivity of ceramic fibrous insulator was analysed and predicted by using the modeling/simulation technique. Ceramic fibrous insulators are widely used as high temperature insulator on account of their lightweight mass and heat resisting properties. Especially it is suitable to protect the high speed aircraft and missiles from severe aero-thermodynamic heating. Thermal conductivity of ceramic fibrous insulator could be determined from the conductive heat transfer and the radiative heat transfer through the insulator. In order to estimate conductive thermal conductivity, homogenization technique was applied, while radiative thermal conductivity was computed by means of random number and radiation probability. Particularly radiation probability can make it possible to estimate the conductivity of fibrous insulator without any experimental constant. The calculated conductivity predicted in the present study have a reasonable accuracy with an average error of 7 percent to experimental data.
Considerations in Practical Advanced Guidance Law Development

Many modern guided weapon systems employ sophisticated target sensors as well as powerful computing systems. Due to such advanced features, they are required to achieve better guidance accuracy, and at the same time other guidance objectives for better weapon effectiveness and survivability. In this paper, we overview some of the technical considerations in such advanced guidance algorithm development, and briefly look at some related research works. More specifically, we discuss impact angle control, time-varying nature of the guidance system, time-to-go estimation, guidance loop stability, effect of autopilot lag and physical limitations in control variables, parasitic paths in guidance loops, etc. We also briefly look at some advanced concepts such as integrated guidance and control loop design, target adaptive guidance, guidance law development based on dual control concept, and terminal evasive maneuver.
Characteristics of the Spray and Combustion in the Liquid Jet
Journal of the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 107~115
In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liquid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which Is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the sufficient penetration must be considered to make a stable flame.
