A therapeutic following confirming symptom and a therapeutic regimen prescription
Lee Jang-Cheon ;
Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 29~31
A therapeutic following confirming symptom(辨證施治) has a proper characteristic in oriental medicine, which can be grasped but by pathological body reflection not by histological or molecular level etiology. It is also able to be selected a prescription by means of clinical trials which promote human body's natural resurgent. Whereas, a therapeutic regimen prescription(定病傳方) has a merit in prescribing a disease to the point. which has been developed and established a therapy method naturally for thousands years. Then, which of the two is the better method in clinic? The answer is a co-exist of the two therapy methods in a matter of developing deciding therapeutic cooperation. To tie a knot, two methods need the opposite one.

We have examined the purgative effect of three Jechun-jun formulas in sprague dawley(SD) rat. Three jechun-jun formulas were Jechun-jun(Sample I ) and augmented Jechun-jun(Sample II) and augmented Jechun-jun add rhubarb(sample III ). We examined the amount and the humidity of feces in rat. The experimental animals were devided into four groups. as control group and three Jechun-jun (sample I, II, III). We administerd the water extract of sample I, II, III to rat per oral for 8days long. After every 24hours measured the amount of wet feces from rats in metabolic cage. Humidity rate of feces from rat was at first measure wet feces for 24hours (W) and measure dried feces (W1) and then we consider W-W1 as humidity. High humidity rate means constipation changes into moistening stool. The amount of wet feces and humidity rate of feces in rats were increased in sample I, II, III. Sample I has highest humidity rate of feces. so showed strong moistening effect. Sample II has mild effect in treating constipation. sample III has most amount of wet feces. in conclusion Jechun-jun has an effect of moistening stool. and augmented Jechun-jun add rhubarb has strong purgative effect.

Park Sun-Dong ;
Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 81~92
This study was performed to observe the effect of hyulbuchukeo-tang and its component groups on recovery of hepatoxicity in alloxan treated rats. The experimental group was divided into 3 groups: hyulbuchukeo-tang(HCT) and its components groups, sayeok-san(H-sa) and dohong-samul-tang (H-do). The results were obtained as follows: 1. The level of Glucose was considerably reduced by HCT, H-sa, H-do with high significancy. 2. In the change of GOT activity, HCT and H-do were decreased with high significancy, H-do was decreased with some significancy. 3. In the change of GPT activity, HCT was decreased with high significancy, H-sa and H-do were decreased with some significancy. 4. In the change of
activity, HCT was decreased with high significancy, H-do was decreased with some significancy. 5. In the change of ALP activity. only HCT was decreased with some significancy. 6. In the change of LDH activity, HCT was decreased with high significancy, H-sa and H-do were decreased with some significancy. 7. In the change of bilirubin contents. only HCT was decreased with some significancy. As result, hyulbuchukeo-tang(HCT) has significant effects on recovery of hepatoxicity, and its components groups. sayeok-san(H-sa) and dohong-samul-tang(H-do) have some effects. It suggests that sayeok-san(H-sa) and dohong-samul-tang(H-do) have more effects on recovery of hepatoxicity in case of the combination of the two (that is hyulbuchukeo-tang) than in case of the separation.

This experimental studies were done to investigate the effects of Sambutang(SBT) and consitituent herbs on the regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure(BP) in rats. The results are as follows: SBT and consitituent herbs(SBT omitting Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens. Ginseng Radix and Aconiti iateralis preparata Radix) was increased rCBF significantly in a dose-dependent manner. SBT omitting Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens and Ginseng Radix were decreased significantly BP in rats. But, SBT, Aconiti iateralis preparata Radix and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens were not affected BP in rats. According to the above findings. it is suggested that SBT causes a diverse response of rCBF, and specially the rCBF by increasing SBT is mediated action of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens.

L-NNA did not affect rCBF. 5.ODQ did not affect rCBF. Above the results. Yongyanggaktang relates to the symphathetic action.
Effect of Hwangryunhaedok-tang on Blood Pressure and Renal Functions in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
Kook Yoon-Bum ;
Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 113~129
The present study designed to investigate whether hwangryunhaedok-tang show an anti-hypertensive effect and elucidate its possible mechanism in spontaneously hypertensive rats. The systolic blood pressures (SBP) were significantly decreased as an oral administration of hwangryunhaedok-tang compared with their control group. The urine volume was significantly increased by administration of hwangryunhaedok-tang but urinary sodium (UNaV), potassium (UKV), chloride excretion (UCIV) were not remarkably affected. The urinary creatinine excretion rate (UcrV) was significantly increased in rats administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang in association with increase of creatinine clearance (Ccr). The urine osmolality (Uosmol) was significantly decreased in SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang without being changed in solute-free water reabsorption ( TcH20). The expressions of Aquaporin 2 (AQP-2). 3 and
subunits of Na.K-ATPase were determined by Western blot analysis to assess the role of these proteins in association with changes of renal functions in SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang. The expression of AQP-2 and 3 protein was significantly down-regulated in the kidney of SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang compared with those in control rats without being altered expression of
subunits of Na,K-ATPase. In the in vitro assay, Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) was inhibited by hwangryunhaedok-tang in a dose-dependent manner. Berberine and/or palmatine, which are well known as a main components of hwangryunhaedok-tang, also have an ACE inhibitory effects in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that hwangryunhaedok-tang lowered blood pressure through the increase of diuresis caused by down-regulation of water channels and the inhibition of Angiotensin converting enzyme.

Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 131~142
The effect of Banhasasim-tang extracts on the cardiac toxicity and general symptom induced by Doxorubicin administration(Three injection protocol) were monitored using male ICR mice. The changes of body weight, clinical signs, necropsy findings and organ weights of heart were observed. The results were as followed. 1. Decrease of body weight after Doxorubicin treatment were dose-dependently inhibited by Banhasasim-tang extracts. 2. The degrees of anorexia, ataxia and dehydration that were observed in Doxorubicin treatment group were dose-dependently inhibited by Banhasasim-tang extracts. 3. Increase of absolute and relative heart weight observed in Doxorubicin treatment group were dose-dependently inhibited by Banhasasim-tang extracts. In addition. the degrees of heart congestion and enlargement were significantly and dose-dependently decreased after Banhasasim-tang extracts dosing groups compared to that of Doxorubicin treatment group. In conclusion, the toxicity of Doxorubicin treatment(decrease of body weights, clinical signs such as anorexia, ataxia and dehydration, changes of organ weights of heart) was inhibited and/or prevented by Banhasasim-tang extracts. According to these results. it is considered that Banhasasim-tang has some preventive effect against to toxicity induced by Doxorubicin.

Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 143~155
In the hope of identifying anti-leukemic agents from traditional herbal medicines. this study was designed to investigate the anti-leukemic effects of the herbal medicine Jipaesan, which is composed of Angelica Dahurica and Fritillariae Verticillata. in acute promyeloid leukemia HL-60 cells. Jipaesan showed anti-proliferative effect through the induction of differentiation and apoptosis in HL -60 cells. Verticinone as a major differentiating agent and imperatorin as major apoptosis-inducing agent were isolated from the water extracts of F. Verticillata and A. Dahurica, respectively. Combined treatment of HL-60 cells with two major compounds showed synergy in the induction of differentiation. Since the induction of differentiation and/or apoptosis has therapeutic values in curing acute leukemic diseases. Jipaesan could be useful as an anti-leukemic agent.

Herbal Formula Science, volume 10, issue 1, 2002, Pages 157~167
This study was performed to investigate what effect the taste and quality of drugs would have on the cold and heat mechanisms of human body. We administered Hwangryeunhaedok-tang composed of bitter-tasted, cold-qualified drugs and Gungangbuza-tang composed of spice-tasted. hot-qualified drugs, respectively to the mice 1 hr before exposure to heat stress or cold stress. Plasma corticosterone level of mice was measured. The results were as follows: 1. The elevated corticosterone level in the mice exposed to heat stress was significantly decreased after administration of Gungangbuza-tang but there was no decrease after administration of Hwangryeunhaedok-tang. 2. The elevated corticosterone level in the mice exposed to cold stress was significantly decreased after administration of Hwangryeunhaedok-tang but there was mild decrease after administration of Gungangbuza-tang. 3. When the doses, 3g/kg and 1g/kg were administerd to mice exposed to heat stress. both dose showed significant decrease of corticosterone level and the dose. 3g/kg was more effective. However, in the mice exposed to cold stress, the dose, 3g/kg showed mild decrease and 1g/kg showed significant decrease. These data suggested that HW decreased the plasma corticosterone level in the mice exposed to cold stress and GB also decreased the plasma corticosterone level in the mice exposed to heat stress. In conclusion, our study revealed that the taste and quality of drugs controled the cold and heat mechanism of human body.
