Objectives: The aim of this work is the making of morphological standard in platycodi radix. Methods: The external-internal morphological standards were determined by using stereoscope and butanol series. Conclusions: The external and internal characteristics according to the shape of original plant or herbal states. entirely correspond to all the literature on this subject. According to the place of production. the difference appears. (1) In the external shapes. as the Korean products. the distinction among the first. medium. poor class products was caused by the state of processing of desiccation. But as the foreign products, it was caused by the difference of size, color and especially color of circle. (2) In the internal shapes. the Mt. Baekdu region products is not skinned and has the deep state of suberization of cork phellogen. so it makes certain distinctional point. And the Korean products has the much latex tube group relatively and the bigger crevice than the foreign one.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to find the therapeutic meaning of the Pyrite in herbal medication. Methods: About the origin, the component, the processing the drug, the properties and tastes of drugs, the meridian tropism, the effects, the treating disease, the contraindication and the method of administration. We have researched thirty three literatures to mention the pyrite in time sequence. Results: 1. The pyrite belongs to the metallic herbs and it consists of Iron sulfide, sometimes containing small amounts of cobalt, nickel. silver, and gold. 2. The processing the drug are the tempering, the annealing with vinegar. the refining drug with water or RADIX GLYCYRRHIZAE and et cetra, and accoring to these methods, the pyrite classified into three groups - the rough pyrite, the tempered pyrite, the annealed pyrite. 3. The properties and tastes of drugs is pungent and regular. If pyrite is well refine, it is nearly safe form the metallic virulence. the meridian tropism is mainly liver meridian. 4. From old times, pyrite has come into general use to treat the injury of muscles and tendons and bone facture because it is effective on dissipating blood stasis, alleviating pain and reunion of bone, muscles and ligament. 5. When the symptom is gone, a medicine to contain pyrite must be stoped taking. Because of pyrite's effect on regulateing Gi and promoting blood flow. Conclusions: This study showed that the pyrite is useful herb to treat the injury of muscles and tendons and bone facture.

Herbal Formula Science, volume 14, issue 1, 2006, Pages 105~119
Objectives & Methods : This present study was performed to investigate the effect of Hwadamtongrak-Tang extract (HTT) on the regulation of cerebral hemodynamics in terms of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP)] in normal and cerebral ischemic rats. Also the effects of HTT on changes in local blood flow, inhibition of LD H activity in neuronal cells, and levels of cytokine production in the serum were determined in the ischemic rat model. The major findings are summarized below. Results : 1. HTT significantly increased rCBF in a dose-dependent manner, but MABP was not changed by HTT treatment. These results suggest that HTT may increase rCBF by dilating cerebral arterial diameter. 2. HTT-induced increase in rCBF was blocked by pretreatment with cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin (IDN, 1 mg/kg, i.p.) and MABP was significantly increased by ID N. 3. Pretreatment of methylene blue
, an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase, significantly decreased both rCBP and MABP in HTT-treated rats. 4. HTT treatment significantly increased rCBP to a stable level during the period of cerebral reperfusion. 5. HTT significantly inhibited LD H activity in neuronal cells, suggesting a neuroprotection by HTT. 6. Serum interleukin
and tumor necrosis factor
levels were significantly decreased in the femoral artery 1 hr after middle cerebral arterial occlusion in HTT-treated rats. IL-10 levels in the serum were significantly increased by HTT treatment whereas transforming growth factor
levels were similar between HTT-treated and control groups. 7. Serum interleukin
and tumor necrosis factor
levels were significantly decreased in the femoral artery 1 hr after reperfusion in HTT-treated rats. Serum IL-10 levels were significantly decreased in HTT-treated rats compared with the control group, and no significant changes in
in the serum were observed by HTT treatment. Conclusions: The present data suggest that HTT may have an anti-ischemic effect via the improvement of cerebral hemodynamics and thus protect the brain from ischemic damage.

Hyperlipidemia is one of dangerous factors causing the arteriosclerosis. For the study of Cheunggansoyosan-gamibang( CGSYS) on antihyperlipidemic effect, we had fed mice divided to three groups (basal diet, hyperlipidemic diet, hyperlipidemic diet + CGSYS), and observed the change of weight, total cholesterol. triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol. LDL-cholesterol. sGOT, sGPT on the serum per every 7days for 6weeks. Also to compensate for the results above, we had tested rat liver. The results of this Study were obtained as fallows ; 1. Cholesterol change on blood was decreased by CGSYS. 2. Total cholesterol. triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were significantly decreased by CGSYS. 3. HDL-cholesterol was significantly increasd by CGSYS. 4. sGPT was significantly decreased by CGSYS. 5. sGOT was not changed by CGSYS. 6. In case of supplying CGSYS. fatty degeneration was not observed in liver portal area. This study suggests that Cheunggansoyosan-gamibang was significant effect with hyperlipidemia.

The genotoxicity of water extract of Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang was tested by In Vitro Chromosome Aberration Test. Bacterial Reverse Mutation Assay and Micronucleus test according to OECD Guidelines and KFDA Guidelines. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Chromosome Aberration Test: In Vitro Chromosome Aberration Test of Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts was carried out using cultured Chinese hamster lung cells in the presence and absence of metabolic activation system(S-9 mix). No significant changes in the number of aberrant metaphases having structural and number of aberrations were detected in Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts treated groups. 2. Bacterial Reveres Mutation Assay: Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts was evaluated for its potential to induce reverse mutation in the histidine auxotroph strains of Salmonella typhimurium such as TA100, TA1535, TA98 and TAl537 and the tryptophan auxotroph strain of Escherichia coli WP2 uvrA. No significant changes in the number of revertant colonies compared to its negative control were detected in Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts treated groups against all 5 strains. 3. Micronucleus test: Micronucleus test of Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts were performed using specific pathogen free 7-week old male ICR mouse. No significant changes in the number of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes among 2000 polychromatic erythrocytes compared to negative control were detected in all Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts treated groups. In summarized above-mentioned results, it is concluded that Bojungikkeehapdaechilki-tang extracts have not genotoxicity against In Vitro Chromosome Aberration Test, Bacterial Reverse Mutation Assay and Micronucleus test.

Future of Korean Oriental Medicine(Bang-Jae) ; A personal perspective
Kang, Soon-Su ;
Herbal Formula Science, volume 14, issue 1, 2006, Pages 201~203
There are people. however, who do not understand what science means, especially among those practicing Oriental Medicine. They associate science with machines and consider that science is something not applicable to Oriental Medicine because Medicine is for humans not for machines. Science is a system of knowledge of universal facts and laws obtained based on objectivity, which under the same conditions gives the same results no matter when, where and how it is done and no matter who does it. To achieve development of that level, knowledge and technology from all areas should be considered and, if found useful, should be accepted. The immediate hurdle is to make Bang-Jae Science understood. So far Bang-Jae Discipline as understood by the practitioners of Oriental Medicine is nothing more than selecting prescriptions inherited from the predecessors that match given symptoms. To make Bang-Jae Discipline a science. i.e. Bang-Jae Science, we should not only study the traditional literature to gather data, experiment and verify with them one after another. make them objective and carry our scientific systemization. It takes fresh and creative trials but it will surely contribute to the future medical science.
