According to the study of literature on RADIX STEMONAE about its efficacy, pharmacological action, and clinical adaptive disease, the results are as follows; 1. About the efficacy of RADIX STEMONAE, it is known as moistening the lungs to arrest cough, and intestinal parasites from ancient to now, and dispelling phlegm is also known. 2. The clinical adaptation of RADIX STEMONAE is chronic bronchitis, pertussis, pulmonary tuberculosis in respiratory disease, and ascaricide for Ascaris, Enterobius vermicularis or eczema, pruritus, destroy louse for endermic liniment. 3. The pharmacological action of RADIX STEMONAE are antitussive, tuberculostatic, anthelmintic, antibacterial, antivirus, antifungal. 4. The antitussive mechanism of RADIX STEMONAE is central inhibitor for cough center of medulla oblongata, and the mechanisms of bronchial smooth muscle relax, and expectorant is also known.
A study on medicinal theory of Wang-Ang(汪昻)

We studied medicinal theory on processing drugs of Wang-Ang. Wang-Ang used various methods of medicinal processing. He used such as soaking(浸), maceration(泡), washing(洗), elutriation(淘), mixing together(拌), refining powder with water(水飛) and floating(水漂) in medicinal processing with water. He used such as making hot(?), roasting in ashes(?), stir-frying with liquid(炙), parching(炒), heating(燒), baking(焙), stirring-baking(?) and distilling(煉) in medicinal processing with fire. He used such as steaming(蒸), boiling(煮), making hot and soaking(??) in medicinal processing with water and fire. And He used such as cooking(熟), making drugs into gelatin(制膠), making drugs into frostlike powder(制霜法), making drugs into bead(制珠), fermentation(生衣) and compound medicinal processing(複制法).
The meaning on using decoction of Jujubae Fructus in taking herb medicines

We sometimes directed taking medicine by using decoction of Jujubae Fructus in taking herbs medicine. And I studied meaning on using decoction of Jujubae Fructus in taking herbs medicine. The obtained results were follows: 1. In taking medicine by using decoction of Jujubae Fructus, chief effect positions of that prescription were heart, spleen, stomach, and kidney. 2. In taking medicine by using decoction of Jujubae Fructus, chief treatment symptoms were heart throb, sleeplessness, reddish turbid urine, retention of phlegm and fluid, retention of fluid in the body, weakness. 3. In taking medicine by using decoction of Jujubae Fructus, chief pathogenic factors of that prescription were deficiency syndroms of the heart, retention of phlegm and fluid, retention of fluid in the body, consumptive disease, weakness.

The purpose of this Study was to investigate effects of KaegiBokryengHwan(KBH) on anti-tumor, immunocytes and nitric oxide(NO). This Study estimated the proliferation of L1210 cell lines, HeLa cell lines, SK-OV3 cell lines, MCF-7 cell lines, balb/c mouse 3T3 cell lines, mouse thymocytes and mouse splenocytes and NO production from peritoneal macrophages in vitro. and estimated the proliferation of L1210 cells, mouse thymocytes and splenocytes and NO production from peritoneal macrophages and body weight in L1210 cells-transplanted mice in vivo. The result were obtained as follow ; 1. KBH inhibited significantly SK-OV3 cell lines in vitro. 2. KBH was accelerate significantly the proliferation of balb/c mouse thymocytes in vitro. 3. KBH increased significantly NO production from peritoneal macrophages in vitro. 4. KBH didn't effect the cytotoxicity of L1210 cells in L1210 cells-transplanted mice. 5. KBH was accelerate the proliferation of splenocytes in L1210 cells-transplanted mice. 6. KBH increased NO production from peritoneal macrophages in L1210 cells-transplanted mice. 7. KBH increased the body weight as comparing with control group in L1210 cells-transplanted mice.
EFFECT OF BATRYTICATUS BOMBYCIS ON THE CEREBRAL HEMODYNAMICS OF RATS

Oriental medicine prescription has been used for the treatment of various clinical symptoms associated with cerebral apoplexy. However, single herb drug does not used cerebral apoplexy and there mechanisms of action have not been defined, and it is not yet known what effects they have on the hemodynamics of cerebral circulation. The study was aimed to investigate the effect batryticatus bombycis(BB) on the vascular systems including changes in blood pressure (BP), and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and of male Sprague-Dawely rats. The changes in rCBF were determinated by laser-Doppler flowmetry. 1. Blood pressure was not affected by BB in rats. 2. rCBF was increased by BB in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Pretreatment with methylene blue(1mg/kg), and propranolol(1mg/kg) did not inhibited BB induced increased in rCBF. 4. Pretreatment with propranolol(1mg/kg) was increased by BB in a dose-dependent manner in blood perssure. 5. Pretreatment with ODQ(
) and L-NNA(1mg/kg) were inhibited BB induced increased in rCBF. 6. Pretreatment with L-NNA(1mg/kg) was increased rCBF in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that BB causes a diverse response of blood pressure and regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF). The increased in rCBF is also mediated by nitric oxide synthease and guanylate cyclase.
Comparative Study on the Toxic Mechanism of Oxidant-Induced Neurotoxicity and Protective Effects of Several Herb Extracts as a Nerve Growth Factor in Spinal Motor Neurons Damaged by Oxygen Radicals

In order to eludidate the mechanism of oxidative stress in cultured spinal motor neurons damaged by oxygen free radicals, cytoxicity was assesed by MTT assay and NR assay after spinal motor neurons from mouse were cultured in media containing various concentrations of xanthine oxidase(XO) and hypoxanthine(HX) for 3 hours. In addition, neuroprotective effects of several herb extracts on oxidant-induced neurotoxicity were examined in these cultures, compared with nerve growth factors such as basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF). XO/HX decreased cell viability in dose- and time dependent manners on cultured mouse spinal motor neurons, and MTT50 and NR50 values were measured at 20mU/ml XO and 0.1mM HX for 3 hours in these cultures. bFGF significantlt increased cell viability. In neuroprotective of herb extracts, Epimedium Koreanum Nakai(EK) and Alpinia oxphylla Mig(IJI) was very effective in the prevention of the neurotoxicity induced by XO/HX in cultured mouse spinal motor neurons. From the above results, it is suggested that XO/HX shows toxic effect in cultured mouse spinal motor neurons and selective herb extracts such as Epimedium Koreanum Nakai(EK) and Alpinia oxphylla Mig(IJI) were very effective in the increase of cell viability against the neurotoxicity induced by oxygen radicals in these cultures.
Effect of Epimedium Koreanum Nakai on GO-Induced Neurotoxicity in Cultured Mouse Spinal Dorsal Root Ganglion Neurons

To evaluate the neurotoxic effect of oxygen radicals in cultured mouse spinal dorsal root ganglion(DRG) neurons, cytotoxicity was determined by MTT assay after cultured DRG neurons were grown in the media containing various concentrations of glucose oxidase(GO). In addition, neuroprotective effect of herb extract, Epimedium Koreanum Nakai was examined by MTT assay in cultured DRG neurons. Cell viability of cultured DRG neurons was remarkably decreased by GO in dose- and time-dependent manner, and Epimedium Koreanum Nakai protected remarkably GO-induced neurotoxicity in these cultures. From the above results, it is suggested that oxygen radicals is toxic in cultured mouse DRG neurons, and herb extracts such as Epimedium Koreanum Nakai are effective in prevention of the neurotoxicity induced by oxygen radicals in cultured mouse DRG neurons.

Effects of Several Herbs on the Blood Vessel

Rhizoma Arisaematis, Lignum Akebiae, Rhizoma Zedoariae, Cortex Eucommiae, Folium Perillae, Radix Sophorae Subprostratae, Radixi, Radix Ledeboutriellae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Herba Ephedrae, Radix Puerariae and Radi Aconitx Bupleuri have been used in Korea for many centuries as a treatment for various disease. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of several herbs on norepinephrine(NE) induced blood vessel contraction in rabbits and pigs. Rabbit(2 kg, male) were killed by
exposure and a segment (8-10mm) of each rabbit was cut into equal segments and mounted in a tissue bath. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducers under 2-3 g loading tension. The dose of norepinephrine(NE) which evoked 50% of maximal response
was obtained from cumulative dose response curves for NE
. Contractions evoked by NE
were inhibited significantly by Rhizoma Arisaematis, Lignum Akebiae, Rhizoma Zedoariae, Cortex Eucommiae, Folium Perillae, Radix Sophorae Subprostratae and Herba Ephedrae in abdominal aorta. Contractions evoked by NE
were inhibited significantly be Lignum Akebiae, Rhizoma Zedoariae, Cortex Eucommiae, Herba Ephedrae, Radix Puerariae and Radix Bupleuri in femoral artery. Contractions evoked by NE
were inhibited significantly by Radix Sophorae Subprostratae, Radix Aconiti and Herba Ephedrae in renal artery. These results indicate that each herb can relax NE induced contraction of rabbit and pig blood vessel selectively, and that this relaxation relates to Gui-Gyung(歸經).
Studies on Method Extraction in Artemisia Iwayomogi

Though development of diverse and highly value-added commodities in Artemisia Iwayomogi, we can expect such effects as procurement of secure farm's production bases and promotion of consumer's demands. Thus, as a first step for development of funtional foods of Artemisia Iwayomogi, solids yield, physical properties and scopoletin contents which is main component of Artemisia Iwayomogi, were investigated according to extration solvents and temperatures. The main result of this experiment were as following: solid yield in 50% ethanol extracts showed higher than those of water extracts at the same temperature. In condition of 50% ethanol extracts, solid yield, degree of browing and scopoletin contents showed increasing, but turbidities which mean transmittance(%T) showed decreasing sa temperature rise. In water extracts, pH values showed increasing as temperature rise.
