Development of BIM Based Information Model Interface Module for a Modular Pier

Modular technology has become a major issue of the construction industries to enhance their productivity. Modular bridge construction generally requires the data exchange between the contractors, designers, fabricators and constructors. Therefore, a readily accessible information model interface module based on BIM technology is essential for their communication during a project life-cycle. In this study, BIM based information model interface module for a modular pier was developed. For the information models, the PBS(Product Breakdown Structure) and LOD(Level of Development) were defined. Next, all components of a modular pier were conducted by the parametric modeling technique, and then 3D cell library interface was developed. An nterface module was also developed using VBA(Visua basic Application) for exchanging a data from 3D model library to other softwares such as Microstation, AutoCad and Excel and was connected with MS Access database. The developed information model interface module would improve the design quality of the modular pier and reduce the time and cost for design. Updated 3D information models could be utilized for the fabrication, assembly, and construction process for modular piers.
Intelligent Information Search of Environmental Regulations through Metadata-based Information Structurization

With the emergence of environment-friendly paradigms, many countries around the world have enacted various laws to take care of environmental pollution-related problems. The goal of these environmental laws and regulations was to properly respond to rapid environmental pollution. Because of the simultaneous enactment of these laws on diverse pollution sources, however, a variety of problems, including an unclear correlation among these laws, have occurred. As a result, workers have found it hard to collect and use the related laws and regulations. Therefore, this study proposes a metadata-based information retrieval method for the efficient search of environment-friendly laws and regulations. The laws and regulations were structured using metadata from users, business stage, topic and department. These were obtained through semantic analysis on environment-friendly laws and regulations, and then an intelligent retrieval approach was utilized. To verify the retrieval plan, a test case was conducted, and improvement in retrieval accuracy against the conventional system was confirmed. It appears that the proposed plan will improve productivity in the construction industry by improving accuracy in retrieving environment-friendly laws and regulations.
A Prototyping Method for Kinect Facade Design: Focusing on the Role of BIM and the Interaction between Digital and Analog Models

The kinetic façade system is an interactive building envelope which is adaptive to environmental condition by transforming the behaviour of its components. The design process of kinetic façade system calls for a novel approach. It needs to support designers to adopt technologies from multidisciplinary fields such as physical computing and robotics. In this paper, prototyping method is introduced as a useful technique for implementing kinetic façade systems. In order to incorporate prototyping method into architectural design process, two aspects are investigated in digital design studio: (1) The interactions between digital and analogue environments (2) The role of traditional design tools. Furthermore, the role of BIM is investigated by analyzing two aspects.
A Basic Study on the Extension of Design Information to Improve Interoperability in BIM-based Collaborative Design Process

In the initial step of BIM based architectural design process, workloads are increased and the decision making process becomes more complex than those of the conventional design process. Technologies regarding distribution, exchange, classification, verification of BIM data are fundamental elements of construct environment for information sharing based on BIM. Interoperability of BIM model data is another issue to integrate BIM model. To improve interoperability in BIM-based collaboration, a model for utilizing formal&unformal design informations is suggested. Futhermore, Prototyping the model and practical test is conducted for advancement of data exchange making design data richen.
Pedagogical Issues of Performance Oriented Digital Design - Focused on Kinetic Facade Design -

Existing pedagogical issues of digital design including BIM have been focused not on potential of Digital Design but on skills of BIM or digital modeling tool. Kinetic facade can move or change material state to react surrounding environment conditions. It is a suitable design object for teaching principle of Performance Oriented Digital Design. Variables of movements affect multi-criteria of performances of kinetic facade, so different design approach from fixed facade design should be explored. Kinetic facade design process is proposed to study pedagogical issues of Performance Oriented Digital Design in this paper. Through Kinetic facade design process, students can understand conditions, variables, and performances of digital design.
Interoperability Verification using BIM Case Models of Road Project

Recently, BIM has been widely applying in civil engineering projects centering on the private construction industry in order to establish self guidelines for spreading in practice. However, most BIM technologies and software are based on the architectural projects. In these environments, it is not easy to apply the BIM to a infrastructure field. Even BIM standards with IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) are also focusing on architectural projects. Especially, both private and public sectors do not know about how BIM delivery system should be performed, and how such deliverable should be submitted to the government yet. Thus, we need to analyze an application level of BIM S/W (Software) in real projects and verify their interoperability. Besides, since there are not any common standards that can exchange IFC models for civil engineering projects, we have many issues in converting as-built infrastructure models into IFC and delivering their design documents to the government. Accordingly, this study aims to perform a BIM process with commercial software for real road project after a detailed design process is finished and verify interoperability between diverse BIM software for securing BIM data reliability.
A Study on Organization of Information Network for Efficient Construction of U-City - Focused on Economic Analysis of Municipal Network and Leased Network -

The Cities that recently developed have been applied to private network for establishing information communication network system. The local governments planning or pursuing U-City construction should also choose the private network in consideration of operation and maintenance. In viewpoint of agency operating u-City, it is necessary to integrate traditional and new network. However, there has been lack of guides to choose U-City network considering the economic analysis between private and leased network. This study analyzed the characteristics of private and leased network, and the cost-benefit by estimating the network cost and communication demand focused on U-services that are recently applied. This study purpose a guide for efficient U-City information network selected by estimating ROI(Return On Investment) and BEP(Break Even Point) for establishing private and leased network.
