Kim Tae-Heong ; Kim Tae-Heon ; Lee Sung-Ryull ; Lyu Yeoung-Su ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 11, issue 2, 2000, Pages 1~9
In previous studies, heat shock has been reported to induce the apoptosis or programmed cell death through the activation of caspase-3. 1 investigated the effect of juniper pure essential oil on the heat shock-induced apoptosis in human astrocyte cell line CCF-STTGI. Treatment of the astrocytes with heat shock markedly induced apoptotic cell death. However, pretreatment of the astrocytes with juniper oil ingibited the heat shock-induced apoptosis. To determine whether juniper inhibits the heat shock-induced activation of these apoptotic proteases, activation of CPP32 was assessed by Western blotting. Consistent with flow cytometry. DNA fragmentation and giemsa staining, heat shock-induced activation of CPP32 was blocked by juniper oil. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), cysteine protease substrates were fragmented as a consequence of apoptosis by heat shock. Juniper oil inhibited the PARP fragmentation. This juniper oil also inhibited the heat shock-induced activation of caspase-3. These results suggest that juniper oil may modulate the apoptosis through the activation of the interleukin-1-converting enzyme-like protease.

Substance P(SP) can stimulate production of tumor necrosis factor-
) from astrocytes stimulated with lipopolysaccharide(LPS). The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of Taraxacum officinale(TO) on the production of TNF-
from primary cultures of rat astrocytes. TO(100& 1000
/ml) significantly inhibited the TNF-
production by astrocytes stimulated with LPS and SP. Interleukin-1(IL-1) has been shown to elevate TNF-
production from LPS-stimulated astrocytes while having no effect on astrocytes in the absence of LPS. We therefore examined whether IL-1 mediated inhibition of TNF-
production from primary astrocytes by TO. Treatment of TO(100 and 1000
/ml) to astrocytes stimulated with both LPS and substance P decreased IL-1 production significantly. Moreover, the production of TNF-
by LPS and substance P in astrocytes was progressively inhibited with increasing amount of IL-1 neutralizing antibody. These results suggest that TO may inhibit TNF-
production by inhibiting IL-1 production and that TO has an antiinflammatory activity in the central nervous system.

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 11, issue 2, 2000, Pages 23~42
Alzheimer's disease(AD) is progressive neurodegenerative disease, which is pathologically characterized by neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles associated with the acetylcholinesterase, apolipoprotein E and butylcholinesterase, and by mutations in the presenilin genes PSI and PS2, and amyloid precursor proteins (APP) overexpression. The present research is to examine the inhibition effect of YJJHT on PS-1, PS-2 and APP overexpression by detected to Western blotting. To verify the EFFects of YJJHT on cognitive deficits further, we tested it on the scopolamine-induced amnesia model of the mice using the Morris water maze tests. and there was ameliorative effects of memory impairment s a protection to scopolamine. YJJHT only partially blocked the increase in blood serum level of acetylcholinesterase and Uric acid induced by scopolamine. whereas blood glucose level was shown to attenuate the amnesia induced by scopolamine and inreased extracellular serum level compared with only scopolamine injection. In conclusion, studies of YJJHT that has been know as anti-choline and inhibition ablilities of APP overexpression, this could also be used further as a important research data for a preventive and promising symptomatic treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Headache is one of the most common medical complaints. It is not so easy to manage headache. especially if it is chronic although it seldom cause serious problem. There are many psychological factor known to induce, maintain an aggravate symptom in patients with chronic headache. The purpose of this study is to investigate clinical characteristics with ABR-2000 was carried out for 57 patients who had been suffered from headache for 6 months from march to August 2000.The results were as follows:1. According to the statics, on the whole woman's rate was higher than man's, and the mean duration of the headache was 8.06 years.2. Common associated symptoms were nausea. dyspepsia, dizziness, palpitation, fatigue, depression, etc.3. According to oriental medical differentiation of symptoms and signs, the rate of stagnation of the liver-qi's fire-transmission(肝變化火), deficiency of blood(血虛) and plegm syncope (痰厥), these three types were hghest.4. Result of analyzing ABR-2000 is that the rate of low response is higher than high response's on each item. But result of Graph A is that the rate of high response in higher than that of low response only in deficiency of Yin(陰虛) and the rate of high response in stagnation of the liver-qi's fire-transmission(肝變化火) and deficiency of blood (血虛) is comparatively high. Result of Graph R is that the rate of high response in wind-heat(風熱), deficiency of blood(血虛) and plegm syncope(痰厥) is comparatively higher than in others.

Depression is a psychiatric syndrom consisting of dejected mood, psychomotor retardation, insomnia and weight loss. sometimes associated with irrational quilt feeling. And it is also similiar to Hwa-byung(火病) symptom in oriental medicine. But it is difficult to diagnose with objective method. Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging(D.I.T.I.) is one of diagnotic method that measure the changes of skin temperature in body.Specially we checked the skin temperature on depressed patients by using D.I.T.I. and compared with Bell's palsy patients and normal persons group. The results are as follows:Average body temperature of the depressed patient group is 36.62
, Bell's palsy patients group is 36.59
and that of the control group is 36.71
. So there is no meaningful difference. The depressed patient group has higher temperature than the Bell's palsy patients group and control group by
at the following acupuncture points in these body parts - upper and lower, left and right, anterior and posterior. When acupuncture points temperature was compared superior and inferior part of the body, depressed patient group have meaningful difference at the GV-4 (Myung-moon) and also in the Bell's palsy patients group and control group. When acupuncture points temperature was compared left and right part of the body. ddpressed patient group have no meaningful difference and also in the Bell's palsy patients group and control group. When acupuncture points temperature was compared in the anterior and posterior part of the body, depressed patient group have meaningful difference at the Gv-4(Myung-moon) and also in the bell's palsy patients group and control group. From this study. we think that D.I.T.I. could be used to diagnose objectively on the depressed patients and useful to another psychoneurogenic diagnosis in oriental medicine.

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 11, issue 2, 2000, Pages 123~130
Objectives: Postpartum depression(PPD) is a kind of serious problem which influences on the postpartum woman, her family and infant. It has been known to be caused by many factors and some depression scales have been used to assess the degree of PPD. Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale(EPDS) recently began to be used for screening for PPD.Methods: The subjects were 46 women who admitted for postpartum treatment in Oriental Hospital of Woosuk University from May 2000 to December 2000. In this study, we used EPDS and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) to assess the degree of PPD, and we researched the related factors of PPD. Results: 13 women(28.3%) in the high risk group by EPDS and 7 women(15.2%) in depression - severe depression group by BDI were diagnosed as PPD among the 46 women. There was significant correlation between Epds score and BDI score. The mean score of EPDS was higher in normal delivery group than caesarean delivery group, higher in primiparae group than multiparae group, and higher in the group who delivered female infants than male infants. But there were not significant differences. And there was not significant correlation between EPDS score and age. Conclusions: These results suggest that PPD is quite frequent at postpartum period and it is necessary to treat for PPD. It is important for clinicians to pay attention to the related factors of PPD as well as to recognize and treat PPD.
