Experimental Study on the Antidepressant Effect of Cheongsimondam-tang

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of Cheongsimondam-tang(COT) on the animal model of depression induced immobilization stress. Method 1) Male rats were used for this experiment. The subject were divided into 4 groups(1. normal 2. saline solution administered during immobilization stress treatment 3. COT of 100mg/kg administered 4. COT of 400mg/kg administered). 2) Immobilization stress was treated for 1 hours on day. During 2 days of immobilization stress treatment, they were executed forced swimming test, passive avoidance test, elevated plus maze test. Corticosterone in blood were measured Results 1) In EPM test, stress group showed significantly increased anxiety, COT groups showed significantly decreased anxiety. 2) In forced swimming test, COT groups did not show significantly decreased immobilization. 3) In passive avoidance test, stress group showed significantly decreased learning execution, COT groups showed significantly increased learning execution. 4) Stress group showed significantly increase in serum level of corticosterone, COT of 400mg/kg group showed significantly decreased serum level of corticosterone. Conclusion : These results suggest that Cheongsimondam-tang(COT) is effective in the treatment of depression.
Effects of several herbs on the expression of MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors in C6 glial cells

Objective : This study was to investigate the effects of several herbs on the levels of MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors Methods: It was investigated the effects of several herbs such as WEDL, WEZV, WEFO, WEOC on the levels of MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors using C6 glial cell model.
treatment, as a positive control group, under non-cytotoxic condition. Results : 1. The water extracts of Dimocarpus long (WEDL) induced the levels of MT2 melatonin receptor expression in a concentration-dependent manner without altering the levels of MT1 melatonin receptor expression. 2. The treatment with the water extract of Zizyphus vulgaris (WEZV) induced the levels of MT1 melatonin receptor expression and the levels of MT2 melatonin receptor expression was not affected. 3. The levels of MT1 as well as MT2 melatonin receptor expression were markedly up-regulated in the water extract of Fossilia ossis (WEFO) and the water extract of Ostreae caro (WEOC)-treated C6 cells. 4. The combination treatment with WEDL and WEZV induced not only the levels of MT1 melatonin receptor expression but also MT2 melatonin receptor expression, but the synergic effects of the combination treatment with WEFO and WEOC were not detected in C6 cells. Conclusion : The study provides important new insights into the possible mechanisms on the regulation of melatonin receptor synthesis by WEDL, WEZV, WEFO and WEOC.
The methodology on the application of EEG as a diagonostic measures in Korean Traditional Medicine

Objective : By examining EEG status in Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM) from the viewpoint of 'form-qi theory(形氣論)', We wish to prepare for the fundamentals of applicability of KTM diagnoses to EEG. In addition, through reinterpretation of existing Western Medicine reports from the viewpoint of KTM, We tried to find out interrelationship between them. Method : In this paper, a methodology applicable to KTM diagnoses of EEG is presented from the EEG features in waveform characteristics, personalized diversity, and cognitive activity reflection. Results : Frequency bands are assigned to corresponding one of the eight trigrams in terms of yin/yang balance, which is analogous with EEG spectrum analysis mostly used in EEG quantification. The amplitude ratio of each EEG for each frequency band gives meaningful index numbers which can be used in EEG data interpretation, and every index number is named after the sixty four hexagrams. These approaches are adopted through both '4-band classification system and '6-band classification system', and applied to pre-existing reported EEG data obtained from normal adults. These analyses show that changes and distribution pattern in the index numbers are observed as a whole on both left-right line and front-back line connecting EEG measurement cephalic electrodes. And differences in distribution pattern of three index numbers deduced from '6-band classification system' are discussed according to constitution. Conclusion : The index numbers introduced here, which are the spectral power ratio for each EEG, are based on KTM yin/yang balance. These index numbers vary according to cephalic location, so its application in terms of traditional meridian theory is strongly expected. The index number distribution also shows different patterns according to constitution.

Conclusion : According to the above results, it is suggested that TFD might be usefully applied for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
The Effect of Sa-am Acupuncture Treatment for Major Symptom of Hwa-byung : A Preliminary Study

Objective : The Purpose of this research is to examine the effect of Sa-am acupuncture treatment(Sim-seungkyuk) for major symptoms of Hwa-byung. Method : In this randomized, single blind, placebo-controlled study, we compared active acupuncture with sham acupuncture in the treatment for major symptoms of Hwa-byung. likert scale(5 score) for major symptom of Hwa-byung was measured as the 1st evaluative instrument, and STAXI-K, STAI-K, BDI-K and HRV were also measured as the 2nd evaluative instrument at the before treatment and after treatment. Results : 26 volunteers participated in this study by dividing two groups, each 13 persons in trial group and control group at random. In comparison of likert scale for major symptoms, after treatment the total score of likert scale for major symptoms decreased significantly in both group than before treatment. And after treatment, the total score of trial group decreased less than those of control group in comparison between two groups. especially after 2 weeks from all treatment, there was significant difference between two groups. Conclusion : We considered that Shim-seungkyuk of Sa-am acupuncture treatment will be not recommended to treatment of Hwa-byung because this study could not prove effect of Shim-seungkyuk treatment for Hwa-hyung in spite of preliminary study. This study will be used to provide a fundamental data for development of clinical research as preliminary study of Hwa-byung.
Gene expression profiling of SH -SY5Y cells in neuroprotective effect of total ginsenosides on H202 induced neurotoxicity

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate molecular basis of neuroprotective effect in total ginsenosides. After H202 induced neurotoxicity, gene expression profiling of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells treated by total ginsenosides is analyzed. Method : After SH-SY5Y cells were cultured, they were damaged by H202 induced oxidative stress. After twenty four hours, experimental group is treated by total ginsenosides and control group is treated by 0.9% saline. A high density cDNA microarray chip is used to analyze the gene expression profiling of SH-SY5Y cells. The Significance Analysis of Microarray method is used for identifying genes on a microarray. Results : 1. According to the results of microarray experiment, 17 genes were up-regulated, 38 genes were down-regulated. 2. Expression of OPHNl, KTANl, ATM, PRKCE, MAPKs genes associated with cell proliferation, neural growth, and the prevention of apoptosis were increased. 3. Change of EPX gene was the greatest among all genes. EPX gene associated with oxidative stress, and tumor suppressor gene ADAM11 were decreased. Conclusion : According to this study, molecular basis of neuroprotective effect of total ginsenosides is as followings: the increase of gene expression associated with cell proliferation, neuron growth, the prevention of apoptotsis and decrease of gene expression associated with oxidative stress and tumor suppressor.
The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Therapy on Autonomic Nerve System

Objective : Progressive muscle relaxation(PMR) therapy is the way of mind and body self-regulation which makes major muscles tension to be comfortable condition. It was considered to be important to check the level of relaxation in objective validity. Therefore, Heart rate variability(HRV) is the valuable measurement to investigate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on autonomic nerve system. Method : I studied 38 subjects. The subjects were measured HRV at first. And then, Using a CD player, the subjects listened to recorded PMR program for 15 minutes. After this progress, I rechecked HRV. Results : heart rate item of HRV was significantly decreased. Also, the numerical value of SDNN(standard deviation of all NN intervals) and SDSD(standard deviation of differences between adjacent NN intervals) items of HRV were showed significantly increased in all subjects after PMR. Conclusion : It indicated that PMR is efficient for inspiring resistance of the stress and a sense of stability, and PMR is a valuable method to reduce the mind stress and stiffness of body muscle.
The Effects of Autogenic Training on Heart Rate Variability

Objective : The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of Autogenic Training on autonomic nervous system for normal subjects with Heart Rate Variability(HRV). Then HRV of total subjects were analyzed by Sasang constitution, MBTI type and relaxation therapy experience. Method : Autogenic Training was applied on 39 subjects individually. Then HRV was examined each 5 minutes before and after Autogenic Training application. Results : 1. Mean HRV, SDNN, SDSD were significant different in HRV between before and after Autogenic Training application in total subjects. 2. SDNN, SDSD were significant different in HRV between before and after Autogenic Training application in Soeumin. Mean HRV, SDNN, SDSD were significant different in HRV between before and after Autogenic Training application in Taeeumin. Conclusion : The results suggest that Autogenic Training application have shown anti-stress effects. Autogenic Training application to Soeumin and Taeeumin have shown more anti -stress effects than application to Soyangin.
The clinical effect of Noechongyolhaedok-tang on the chronic headache

Objective : Chronic headache is the most common headache. The objective of this study is to find the clinical manifestation of chronic headache and has been carried out to investigate the effects of Noechongyolhaedok-tang on the chronic headache. Method : This observation was carried out on 73 patients with chronic headache. They were applied to Noechongyolhaedok-tang and the degree of improvement of chronic headache was evaluated by VAS. Results : 1. Distribution of study population by sex, age : male : female = 1 : 3, 30s-50s group = 81% Duration of onset : over 10years = 48% Reported site of chronic headache : the whole = 28% Clinical pain characteristics : be torn = 25% Frequency of headache : everyday = 72% Time of attack : irregular = 52% 2. In VAS scores, there were significant differences between before and after Noechongyolhaedok-tang treatment. There were no differences between before and after treatment in each sex and the duration of onset Conclusion : The effectiveness of Noechongyolhaedok-tang on the chronic headache was shown through VAS. Further study is needed about Noechongyolhaedok-tang.
Effects of Hap-Kok(LI4) and Jok-Sam-Lee(ST36) Acupuncture on Cerebral Blood Flow in In-Young(ST9)

Objective : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of Hap-Kok(LI4) and Jok-Sam-Lee(ST36) acupuncture on blood flow in In-Young(ST9). Method : Monitoring of TCD was examined in each 25's healthy men and wemen in 20s before and after acupucture on both(right and left) Hap-kok(LI4) and was done on both(right and left) Jok-Sam-Lee(ST36) by different group with same condition. Mean velocity and Pulsatility index analyzed from TCD at both In-Young(ST9). Both group was acupuctured for 15-20 minutes laying at bed. Results : The results showed a significant(
Paired T-test) decrease in mean velocity and increase in pulsatility index at both group. Conclusion : These results suggest that acupuncture could have a specific effect on blood flow called In-Young acupoint.
The effects of Gagambosim-Tang of focal brain ischemic injury induced by Intraluminal Filament insertion in the rats

Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate effects of Gagambosim-Tang(GBT) of focal brain ischemic injury induced by intraluminal filament insertion in the rats. Method : The ischemia was induced by intraluminal filament insertion into middle cerebral artery Eight-arm radial maze was designed for the behavioral task. Gagambosim-Tang was orally administrated in SD rats for 21 days. The task was started on the 4th week after focal brain injury, and performed two trials per day for 6days. The effects of Gagambosim-Tang on neuroprotective agents in cresyl violet, choline acetyltranferase(ChAT), nerve growth factor (NGF)-stain and c-Fos with ischemic injury were investigated. Results : The errors in the eight-arm radial maze task were significantly decreased in normal group compared with control group on 2-6days, GBT lX(42.2 mg/ml)orally administrated group on 1days, GBT 6X(253.2 mg/ml) on 3, 5, 6days. The rate of correct choice was increased in normal and GBT 6X groups. The neuroprotective effect in the hippocampal CA1 was increased in normal and GBT 1X, GBT 6X groups compared with control group. The density of ChAT in the hippocampal CA1 was increased in normal and GBT6X groups compared with control group. The density of NGF in the hippocampal CA1 was increased normal and GBT6X groups compared with control group. The number of c-Fos-positive neurons in the hippocampal CA1 was increased in normal and GBT 6X groups compared with control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that Gagambosim-Tang may have protective effect on dementia.
Comparative Study On Respiration Training Method of Sun-Do Training

Objective : This Study is attempted to compare respiration training method on Sun-Do Training it is quadrivalence. Method : We used all books and paper, journal of inside and outside of the country on Sun-Do Training. Results and Conclusions: 1. Respiration training method on Mu-Eou-Do is spontaneous breathing, breath follows in individual’s respiratory. 2. Respiration training method on Suk-Mun, Guk-Seon-Do, Dan-Hak is all of the position differ, but all considers and breathes naturally abdominal region named Dan-Jeoun, the hypogastric center (丹田). 3. Respiration training method that intend in Guk-seon-do should be soft and slow and long and deep and the moment must not be stoppage. 4. Difference of respiration training method is that region that mean at practice differs. Suk-Mun and Guk-Seon-Do have respiration training method that do with anus as is special in practice process. Dan-Hak thinks that breath has entered as Myung-Mun(命門), means fundamental force.
The Experimental Study of FOENICULI FRUCTUS on the Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease

Objective : This experimental Study was designed to investigate the effects of FOENICULI FRUCTUS(FF) on the change of inhibition lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity in neuronal cells and cytokines production in serum of cerebral ischemic rats.
