Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 21, issue 1, 2010, Pages 89~108
Objectives: This study was to investigate the relation of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) and Diagnos system of oriental medicine(DSOM) in the Insomnia Patients. Methods: For this study, we carried out PSQI and DSOM of 92 patients with insomnia who have come to Kijang public health center and Donguei oriental hospital of Donguei university from November 2008 to October 2009. We verified the association of PSQI and DSOM using crosstabulation analysis, independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis. Results: 1. Blood-deficiency(血虛) is the most frequent pathogenic factor and frequency of nightmare has positive correlation with that factor including heart(心) in total insomnia patients. 2. Female patients have a higher percentage of chronic insomnia than male patients. 3. As patients aged, maintaining sleep gets harder, sleep time is lessening, taking hypnotics is increasing and quality of sleep gets worse. 4. There is high frequency of chronic insomnia in 40~50 years and over 60 years old. Also, the people who are over 60 years of age tend to sleepless and urinated frequently during the middle of the night. The people with the age of 20~30 years tend to take less sleeping pills and frequency of sleeping during daytime is higher than the other age groups but the quality of sleep is quite good. 5. The patient with over 6 months of chronic insomnia tend to be older in age than the patient with less than 6 months. And the patient with chronic sleeping disorder has frequent pain and the quality of sleep is very poor. 6. The patient who took hypnotics tend to be older than hypnotics non-user and frequency of urination was relatively high. 7. The patient who visited oriental medical hospital were tend to be older and get difficult in maintaining sleep. And frequency of taking hypnotics and urinating during night were tend to be higher and the quality of sleep was poor compared with the patient who visited public health center. Conclusions: This study provides insights into the complicated relations of the associated symptom of insomnia with Diagnos system of oriental medicine. And especially this study showed apparent correlation between nightmare in insomnia patients and pathogenic factor of blood-deficiency and heart. Specific correlations and characteristics in this study could be connect develop of new questionaire of insomnia.

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 21, issue 1, 2010, Pages 109~124
Objectives: This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of the InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) extract on
-induced AD model. Methods: The effects of the InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) extract on neural damages of cultured PC12 cells induced by
were investigated. The effects of the InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) extract on neural damages of hippocampal and cortical neurons in the mouse induced by
-amyloid were investigated. Results: 1.
treatment into neuronal cells activated cell death pathway when analyzed by MTT assay and by histological analysis. Then InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) treatment improved cell survival to a similar level as in normal group. 2.
treatment increased caspase 3 protein levels but decreased phospho-Erk1/2 in neuronal cells. InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) treatment reversed the production levels of two proteins close to those in normal group. 3.
treatment induced the atrophy of neuronal cells in terms of neuronal processes and cell body shrinkage, but InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) greatly improved their morphology. 4. Neuroprotective activity, as observed in InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang)-treated groups, was similarly observed in cells treated with galantamine which was used as a positive control. Moreover, overall recovery pattern by InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) was similar between cultured PC12 cells and in vivo hippocampal and cerebral cortical neurons in the mouse brain. Conclusions: This experiment shows that the InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) may play a protective role in neural tissues damaged by cytotoxic substances. Since neuronal damage seen in degenerative brains such as AD are largely unknown, the current data may provide possible insight into therapeutic strategies for AD treatments. InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) might be effective for the treatment of AD. Investigation into the clinical use of the InSamYangYoung-tang(Renshenyangrongtang) for AD is suggested for future research.

Kim, Ju-Bong ; Kim, Soo-Hyun ; Park, Sun-Young ; Chung, Dae-Kyoo ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 21, issue 1, 2010, Pages 125~144
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to characterize the effect of the fraction of Korean mountain ginseng folium (FKG) on the learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine. Methods: The memory ameliorating effect of FKG was investigated using a passive avoidance test, the Y-maze test, and the Morris water maze test in mice. Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine(1mg/kg, i.p.). Results: FKG (2 or 4mg/kg, p.o.) administration significantly reversed scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments in mice by the passive avoidance test and the Y-maze test(P<0.05), and also improved escape latency in the Morris water maze test at 2 or 4mg/kg(P<0.05). Although FKG has little inhibitory activity for AChE (IC50 value; 1847
) in an invitro study, phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase(pERK) was increased by the administration of FKG inhippocampus on immunohistochemistry. Conclusions: These results suggest that FKG may be a useful cognitive impairment treatment, and its beneficial effects are mediated, in part, via activation of ERK pathway.
A Comparative Study on the Psychotherapies between Western and Oriental Medicine
Lee, Seung-Gi ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 21, issue 1, 2010, Pages 145~157
Objectives: Oriental psychotherapy and western psychotherapy in Korea were investigated in order to develop a new oriental psychotherapeutic model for modern Korean. Methods: Oriental psychotherapy and Western psychotherapy were compared and investigated in some viewpoints such as cognition, behaviour, emotion and ultimate purposes for the therapies. Cultural differences are examined, too. Results: There are clear differences between two psychotherapies. It seems that cognition is more important than behaviour or emotion in western psychotherapy. On the other hand, emotion is more important than cognition or behaviour in oriental psychotherapy. Ultimate purposes for the therapies are also different because of cultural differences. Conclusions: New oriental psychotherapeutic model considering cultural differences and merits of two therapies is needed.
