A Comparative Study of Alternative Medicine with Oriental Medicine
Lyu Young-Su ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 1~12
As there has recently been growing interest in Alternative Medicine, Oriental Medicals have been trying to incorporate Alternative Medicine into Oriental Medicine evolutionarily. The purpose of this study is to make a comparative study of the historical background and present condition, the view of life, the principle of therapeutics, and the various therapeutics in Alterative Medicine and Oriental Medicine from the viewpoint of Oriental Medicine. The conclusion of this study is; 1. Although Alternative Medicine has become influential mainly in the effort of finding a solution the limit of western medicine, the clinical effect of Alternative Medicine should be verified continuously. 2. Alternative Medicine includes all of the therapeutics such as Traditional Medicine, Naturopathy, Complementary Medicine and Selective Medicine whose characters are different from Western Medicine and Oriental Medicine can be regarded as a sort of Alternative Medicine. 3. The holistic, systematic view of life of Alternative Medicine, from which viewpoint human considered as a harmonious vital existence, is a sort of recurrence to the view of Hipporcrates. 4. From the viewpoint of Alternative Medicine, a disease is not partial but holistic disorder and is treated by utilizing natural products as a medicine based on the principle that pursues harmonious and balanced psychosomatic function. This principle of therapeutic is the same as Oriental Medicine is based on. 5. Alternative Medicine may be classified largely five category, (1) Eastern Therapy, (2) Manipulative Therapy, (3) Natural Therapy, (4) Active Therapy, (5) Therapy Involving External Powers. 6. Besides Alternative Medicine which is used in clinical treatment, Massage, Homeopathy, Bach Flower remedies, Meditation, and other Music Therapy and Color Therapy is relatively accordant with therapeutics in Oriental Medicine and should be more actively accepted in clinics and improved.
Effect of Gyogamdan Administration on the Stress-Induced Immunosuppression in the Mouse
Hwang Hyun-Soon ; Lyu Young-Su ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 13~24
This study was done to know the effects of the water extracts of Gyogamdan(GGD) on the function of macrophages, the most important cells of the innate immune system, and the rosette forming ability of splenocytes in the mouse under stress. The effects of GGD on the immunosuppression induced by noise stress are as follows. 1. Administration of GGD water extracts normalized the bo요 weight which might be decreased by noise stress. 2. Administration of GGD water extracts increased the production of the such reactive oxygen intermediates as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from macrophsges in vivo & in vitro which were decreased by noise stress. 3. Administration of GGS water extracts did not affect the production of reactive nitrogen intermediates. 4. Administration of GGD water extracts increased the rosette forming ability of splenocytes which was decreased by noise stress. The above effects of GGD might be useful for the treatment of stress-induced infections diseases which could be caused by the suppression of immune responeses which are initiated by the functions of macrophages of the innate immune system.
Effects of Chilbokyeum(七福飮) on the Biochemical Changes in Brain Tissue of Senile Rats
Son Jeong-Seok ; Lyu Young-Su ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 25~37
The present experiment was designed to examine catecholamines, 5-hydroxytryptamine, amino acids. malondialdehyde(MDA) and free radical scavenging activity, by administering Chilbokyeum extracts of a variety of concentration to senile brain rats. The results were summarized as followings ; 1. Chilbokyeum significantly increased noradrenalin in the hippocampus and hypothalamus of the brain tissue of senile rats, ad even though Chilbokyeum increased noradrenalin also in other brain tissue, there was no significance. 2. Chilbokyeum had no effects on dopamine changes in all brain tissue of senile rats.3. Chilbokyeum significantly increased 5-hydroxy-tryptamine in cerebellum, but decreased in other brain tissue.4. Chilbokyeum increased amino in the brain tissue of senile rats. 5. Chilbokyeum significantly decreased MDA and free radical in the brain tissue of senile rats. According to the above results, Chilbokyeum is assumed to improve brain function by reaction by reacting on biochemical of the senile brain, and that Chilbokyeum can be used to treat regressive brain disease carrying symptoms of psychoactive disorders.

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 39~50
This experiment was to investigate the antioxidant effect of Sesimtang(SST) on brain tissues of mouse. The experimental groups were divided into three groups and treated ad follows for 15 days ; Normal group(NC), Vt.E admistrated group(PC), SST administrated Group(SST). After the extracting microsome from brain of mouse, those were measured the amounts of oxidant materials like MDA(malonaldehyde) and
, then activities of antioxidant enzymes like SOD(superoxide dismutase), catalase, NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase. The results were as follows; 1. In TBA reaction to measure the amount of MDA, oxidant material of brain tissue of aged rat, both treated groups showed significant decrease. 2. Hydrogen peroxide formation was showed significant decrease in both treated groups than normal group. 3. Superoxide dismutase activity was increased in both treated groups than normal group, and showed little change in SST administrated group than normal group. 4. Catalase activity was increased in both treated groups than normal group. 5. NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase activity was increased in both treated groups than normal group.
The Antioxidant Effects of ONDAMTANG on the Brain Tissue of Mouse
Jung In-Chul ; Lee Sang-Ryong ;
Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 51~62
This experiment was done to investigate the antioxidant effect of Ondamtang(ODT) on brain tissues of rats. The experimental groups were divided into three groups and treated as follows for a fifteen days ; Negative control group(NC), Vitamin E admistrated group(PC), ODT administrated Group(ODT). After the extracting microsome from brain of rats, those were measured the amounts of Malondiadehyde and Hydrogen peroxide, then activities of antioxidant enzymes like Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductadse. The results were as follows; 1. In TBA reaction to measure the amount of MDA, oxidant material of brain tissue of rats, the group treated by ODT showed significant decrease. 2. In the formation of Hydrogen peroxide, the group treated by ODT showed no change in comparison with normal group. 3. The activity of SOD in the group treated by ODT showed a little increase in comparison with normal group. 4. The activity of Catalase was increased significantly in the group treated by ODT than normal group. 5. The activity of NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase in the group treated by ODT showed a little increase in comparison with normal group. According to the above results, it is suggested that Ondamtang(ODT) has some antioxidant effects on tissues of brain.

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 63~84
The questionnaire which was based on the characteristics of psychological and physiological symptoms of Hwabyung patients was distributed to Hwabyung patients and normal control group. The following results were obtained. 1. It was observed in this study that the rate of occurrence of Hwabyung was higher in female and the people with lower economical and educational background. And this result was in accordance with the previous studies. 2. The personality, defense mechanism and coping strategy of Hwabyung patients was found to be inclined to yin(陰) disposition in this study. 3. Family life of Hwabyung patients was found to be worse than that of normal control group in every respect. 4. In terms of evaluation of their lives, the emotion of Hwabyung patients was characterized as Hahn(恨). And it is postulated that this emotional complex falsifies the reaction of Ki(氣) to the seven emotions(七情).

Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry, volume 8, issue 2, 1997, Pages 85~95
After performing the auricular acupuncture therapy for the functional headache, we came to gain the following therapy effects. 1. In the whole of the patients of the functional headache, housewives of forties were most of all. 2. In the classification of mordern medicine on the patients of the functional headache, muscular contractional headache was most of all and in the classification of oriental differentiation of symtoms and signs(辨證), headache due to deficiency of blood(血虛頭痛) was most of all. 3. In the regional auricular acupuncture therapy for the functonal headache, Taiyang of auricular point(太陽點) had an effect on the lateral headache around the area of Taiyang of auricular point(太陽點) though the actions of sedation, analgesia, Neck of auricular point(頸點) had an effect on the muscular contractional headache of the occipital region, and Stomach of auricular point(胃點) had an effect on the headache of stagnation of phlegm(痰濁頭痛) of anterior region with a chronic digestive disease. 4. The average treatment times of the auricular acupuncture therapy in the patients of the functional headache was 4.08 times, if we have them take auricular acupuncture therapy about 4 times it could be thought to take excellent effect of treatment. 5. The effect of auricular acupuncture therapy for functional headache was turned out to be effective in the following orders ; lateral region(Group A), occipital region(Group B), anterior region(group C). Through the clinical consequences of therapy mentioned above, we came to confirm regular therapeuric effects and hereafter, it is considered that a clinical comparative study on oriental cure and auricular acupuncture therapy for headache has to be more progressed than now.
