A modeling and simulation for a Small-Scaled Power Quality Compensating Equipment of Electrical Railway

This paper presents a study on the control of a power quality compensating equipment of electrical railway built in small-scaled to preliminary research. Because this compensating equipment is very complicated power electronics system, consisting of a scott transformer as a power source, four single phase inverters interconnected with DC-link capacitors and various electrical apparatuses, multiple controllers and control algorithms with high performance and reliability are needed. The major function of the compensating equipment is to manage reactive and active powers by using the four single phase inverters, so, the main control effort is focused on the power flow control which realized through the decoupling current control of the four inverters. Overall control system is designed with object oriented and analyzed on a Simulink window. The simulation results show that the design scheme is very effective for a complicated control system and the proposed controller has good performance.
Procedure Development for Organizing Electronic Technical Manual of Construction Design Information and Applicability Analysis for Practical Project

The existing design materials by document type are restricted in searching and acquiring necessary design information because the materials consist of huge information and various document types. This study suggests a methodology to develop an electronic technical manual that can manage construction design materials by XML-base integrated information system. Electronic technical manual for design materials can provide visualized information through various multimedia tools such as multi-link, virtual reality and animation. Using an integrated electronic manual for construction project can prevent to miss necessary design information. The results of this study includes a data flow diagram to develop an interactive electronic technical manual (IETM) for construction design information. Finally the study suggests some scenarios for practical use and quantitative analysis of application effect analysis by AHP method.

In this study, a ubiquitous sensor for condition monitoring of insulators and lightning arresters installed in power distribution lines and electric traction vehicles is presented. The Changes of Shinkansen Vehicles' Nose Shape

The emphasis of this paper is to find out the changes in length of nose in line with speed improvement and changes of the tendency in the shape of the nose in line with time series based on the Shinkansen vehicle. The length of the nose on the lines of high speed tends to get longer, however there is no proportion between the speed and the nose according to optimal design that was designed to reduce micro-pressure wave and air resistance. The Shinkansen vehicles, according to the shape, can be classified in to an Advanced Paraboloid shape, a Sharp-nosed shape, a Flat-nosed shape and an Organic Double-edged shape and is gradually changing in the trend of diversity and distinction. Hereafter, the design of the nose will be developed better into the design that will comprehend identity of manufacturer, region and culture on the basis of optimized aerodynamic shape.
A Study on Analysis of Passenger Safety in Railroad Tunnel Fire - Using Simulation -

In this paper, the methodology to predict the number of deaths and possible fire propagation scenarios will be described in case of fire on a train in a tunnel. We use a probabilistic analysis method for the evaluation of possibility for each scenario and the deaths tolls are calculated with the help of the passenger evacuation simulation program. The resulting safety of passengers is displayed on a F/N graph, which could be used in part as a guideline to predict the safety level of the tunnel in fire.
Dynamic Valuation of the G7-HSR350X Using Real Option Model

In traditional financial theory, the discount cash flow model(DCF or NPV) operates as the basic framework for most analyses. In doing valuation analysis, the conventional view is that the net present value(NPV) of a project is the measure of the present value of expected net cash flows. Thus, investing in a positive(negative) NPV project will increase(decrease) firm value. Recently, this framework has come under some fire for failing to consider the options of the managerial flexibilities. Real option valuation(ROV) considers the managerial flexibility to make ongoing decisions regarding the implementation of investment projects and the deployment of real assets. The appeal of the framework is natural given the high degree of uncertainty that firms face in their technology investment decisions. This paper suggests an algorithm for estimating volatility of logarithmic cash flow returns of real assets based on the Black-Sholes option pricing model, the binomial option pricing model, and the Monte Carlo simulation. This paper uses those models to obtain point estimates of real option value with the G7- HSR350X(high-speed train).
Estimation of Ride Comfort for Korean High Speed Train at High Speed

The ride comfort is more important in the train speedup. Generally, it is defined as the vehicle vibration. There are many studies on evaluation method of ride comfort for railway. But the ride comfort for Korean high speed train(HSR 350x) has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. It is impossible for HSR 350x to run at constant speeds above 310km/h during 5 minutes required in UIC 513R because of the same operational condition as KTX and the design limitation of infrastructures. The ride indices data had been acquired from 80 to 310km/h through the on-line test. The present study has suggested the methodology for the estimation of the ride indices at high speed above 310km/h by using those obtained below 310km/h and reviewed the ride comfort for HSR 350x in these speeds.
Development and Verification of the Analysis Program for Traction/Braking/Coasting Performance

To start or stop the train safely within the limited traveling distance, it is necessary to guarantee the proper traction or braking force. Presently, most trains are run by the electrical power and have adopted a combined electrical and mechanical(friction) braking system. In order to design a good traction or a brake system, it is essential for designers to predict the traction or brake performance. In this paper, the traction/coasting/braking performances analysis program has been developed and verified by comparing the simulation results with on-line test results of the Korean high speed train(HSR-350); Both results match very well. Consequently, the designers can predict the traction/coasting/braking performances of trains by using the proposed program under various operating conditions.
A Empirical Study II on the Relationship Between the Railway Employs' Personality Types and the Work Satisfaction

Recently, The business environment is very rapidly changed and complicated. Therefore, the companies are confront with the biggest difficulty. To overcome this difficulty, the management should be able to accomplish the human resources management and the efficient business management. Korea railroad industry has a close association with national life as it carries out public works based on its public nature as well as purses the corporate spirit. For that reason, Korea railroad industry has a great spin-off on national economy and exerts a tremendous impact on the improvement of productivity around the industries and the international competitiveness at aspect of efficiency resulting from business rationalization. Railroad system can be described as organic. Railroad Employs take a great role in this system. According the psychology and the Organization Behavior, the decision maker's personality and employee' work satisfaction have influence on performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the Railroad Employs' Personality and Work satisfaction which influence on the efficient business management.
Economic Assesment for Track Ballast Structures based on Proper Maintenance Level

In general, it is known that the concrete ballast track is possible to reduce a cost of maintenance activities cause of maintenance free by restrictive maintenance in application of track ballast structures. However, if deteriorations and fracture mechanism of a material are considered, proper maintenance activities and repairing are continually required. For the problems, we evaluated an economical efficiency of the gravel ballast and the concrete ballast on a proper level of maintenance activities. As the method based on history path is difficult to obtain sufficient reliabilities cause of an absence of real data for maintenance activities, we chose the delphi survey method by professional group, and we obtained the appropriate index and profiles for maintenance activities. As a result, we founded that effects for cost reduction can be expected by preventive maintenance management, and we proposed economical restrictions and life cycle cost for track ballast structures in a life cycle.
An Algorithm for detection and Resolution of Train Conflicts Occurring Within Station

In large station with high density traffic, trains can be hardly controlled by CTC but by station dispatcher because CTC has difficulties in monitoring all states of affairs happening within each station such as departures, arrivals of many trains from different lines and shunting of trains to move between yards and platforms, etc. Therefore the station's dispatcher has to make quick decision about how to reschedule the times and routes for all the trains scheduled within a specific time window. And such decision becomes harder when an unexpected delay occurs because a delay occurring in a train propagates other trains as time goes on. Generally, it is called the conflict detection and resolution to adjust beforehand the distorted schedule due to a delay to original schedule. Our research is different from the state of the arts in that ours determines simultaneously the routes and the times of arrival and departure of trains, although others do only the arrival and departure time of the trains without considering the alternative routes and shunting of the station. This study suggests a mathematical approach for how to detect in advance and resolve efficiently the conflicts occurring within a station and it will be shown how to reduce delay using our approach by means of analysing the schedule of ChyungRyangRi station.
A Study on the Effective Stress of RC Beams in Applying the Adhesion Reinforced and the External Post-Tensioning Method

This study was performed to compare the load-carrying capacities of the reinforced concrete structure between the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method and the external post-tensioning method and further estimate the effective stress of the reinforced material by analyzing the experimental reinforcing effect of each method and the behavior resulting from each method. As a result, it was found out that the effective stress of the carbon fiber reinforcement according to the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method had an unexpected value, and also, bearing of the stress was found to be far from sharing thereof. That is to say, while the carbon fiber was bearing the whole stress to some limits, it got to be momentarily ruptured as soon as it went beyond such limits. On the other hand, the external post-tensioning method has the advantage of inducing an initial effective stress by introducing a strain, and thus, it was found that behavior or bearing of the stress was also found to be a solid behavior of the steel wire. This method was also found to be more efficient and excellent than the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method in the reinforcing effect or securing the effective stress. Accordingly, we were to discuss the effective stress as comparatively examined, focusing on deriving of the more enhanced reinforcing effect on the basis of the experiment to which the field characteristic is added.
A Study on BOM System Constructing for Rolling Stock Maintenance

The most important part of RIMS(Rolling Stock Information Maintenance System) project is to construct BOM(Bill of Material). BOM is a listing or description of raw materials, parts, and assemblies that define a product. To construct BOM for RIMS is not a easy task due to several reasons such as data base scale and flexibility, proper integration between physical BOM and functional BOM, interoperability with other systems, etc. In this study we show several principles that Seoul Metro takes to get over the difficulties mentioned above. Based on these principles we propose the methodology Seoul Metro employs to construct BOM efficiently. We also discuss the applicability of BOM in several fields.
A Study on Flexural Behaviors of Sandwich Composites with Facesheets of Unequal Thickness

Sandwich composites made of glass fabric epoxy facesheets with aluminum honeycomb core or balsa core is considered for the structural design of bodyshell of a Korean Low Floor Bus. Initially, in order to select the optimal facesheet and core materials in design stage, the flexural response of a sandwich composite is a critical importance. In this study, theoretical formula which could easily and quickly evaluate and obtain the flexural responses such as deflection and flexural stiffness of a sandwich composite subjected to external load was established. This theory could calculate the flexural responses of sandwich composites with narrow as well as wide width and with facesheets of unequal thickness, and also distinguish between the bending and shear effects of deflection. Finite element analysis using ANSYS V10.0 was used to offer the best elements for real sandwich composites, and flexural test according to ASTM C393 was conducted to compare with the results of theoretical formula and finite element analysis. The results show that the flexural responses of sandwich composites using proposed theoretical formula is in good agreement with those of experiment and finite element method.
Characteristics and Useful Life Prediction of Rubber Spring for Railway Vehicle

Rubber components are widely used in many application such as vibration isolators, damping, ride quality. Rubber spring is used in primary suspension system for railway vehicle. Characteristics and useful life prediction of rubber spring was very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability. Non-linear properties of rubber material which are described as strain energy function are important parameter to design and evaluate of rubber spring. These are determined by physical tests which are uniaxial tension, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear test. The computer simulation was executed to predict and evaluate the load capacity and stiffness for rubber spring. In order to investigate the useful life, the acceleration test were carried out. Acceleration test results changes as the threshold are used for assessment of the useful life and time to threshold value were plotted against reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. By using the acceleration test, several useful life prediction for rubber spring were proposed.
A Study on Leadership and Management Effectiveness : A Multi-Frame Perspective - Focusing on the railway-related organizations -

The purpose of this article is to depict the relationship between the frames of leadership and the dependent variables such as job satisfaction, respect from subordinates, promotion, and effective attainment of unit objectives. To attain this purpose, four types of multiple leadership frame, such as structural, human resources, political, and symbolic frames were surveyed through questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS. The major findings are : 1) In general, the symbolic frame is an important factor having a stronger influence on job satisfaction, respect from subordinates, promotion, and effective attainment of unit objectives. 2) In details, the human resources frame shows a positive effects on job satisfaction and respect; the structural frame on effective attainment of unit objectives; the political frame, to a certain degree, on promotion; and the symbolic frame, especially on respect from subordinates, promotion, and effective attainment of unit objectives.
The Applicability Analysis of FDS code for Fire-Driven Flow Simulation in Railway Tunnel

The performance and applicability of FDS code is analyzed for flow simulation in railway tunnel. FDS has been built in NIST(USA) for simulation of fire-driven flow. RANS and DNS's results are compared with FDS's. AJL non-linear
[7,8] model is employed to calculate the turbulent flow for RANS. DNS data by Moser et al. are used to prove the FDS's applicability in the near wall region. Parallel plate is used for simplified model of railway tunnel. Geometrical variables are non-dimensionalized by the height (H) of parallel plate. The length of streamwise direction is 50H and the length of spanwise direction is 5H. Selected Re numbers are 10,667 for turbulent flow and 133 for laminar low. The characteristics of turbulent boundary layer are introduced. AJL model's predictions of turbulent boundary layer are well agreed with DNS data. However, the near wall turbulent boundary layer is not well resolved by FDS code. Slip conditions are imposed on the wall but wall functions based on log-law are not employed by FDS. The heavily dense grid distribution in the near wall region is necessary to get correct flow behavior in this region for FDS.
Evaluation of Train Overhaul Maintenance Capacity for Rolling Stock Depot Using Computer Simulation Method

As railroad industry faces the new Renaissance era, effective and efficient maintenance methods for rolling stock operation are required with advanced railroad technology. All kinds of railroad systems such as high-speed long-distance train, metropolitan mass transit and light rail require systematic maintenance technology in order to maintain the safe railroad operation. Simulation models for regular operations of the example maintenance center are developed. In this study, standard maintenance procedures, layout, equipments, and number of workers of Siheung Metropolitan Railroad Maintenance Rolling Stock Depot are considered. The proposed simulation models are developed using simulation package ARENA. After simulation, four types of observations are analyzed. First, the bottleneck operation is identified. Second, the relationship between maintenance center size, number of workers and cycle time is analyzed. Third, the scheduling performances between PERT/CPM and Critical Chain Project Management(CCPM) are compared. Lastly, the simulation results according to worker's working coverage shows expanding the worker's coverage decreases the cycle time and increases throughput per train. However, workers are to be fully trained to do multiple skill work.
Coupling Model of the Maglev Vehicle/Guideway

In general the Maglev vehicle is run over the elevated track called guideway. Since the guideway is elevated, the flexibility of the guideway has an effect on the dynamic responses of a vehicle such as its stability and ride quality. To improve the running performance of the Maglev vehicle and design a cost effective guideway using the dynamic analysis, the dynamic analysis of the system requires the coupling model of the Maglev vehicle and guideway. A coupling model based on multibody dynamics is proposed and programmed. With the program, the UTM01, a low speed Maglev vehicle, is analyzed and discussed.
