Compatibility Evaluation between NCM-CV Cast Iron Brake Disk and Various Pads

The research analyzed dynamo test results to evaluate compatibility between brake disk made of NCM-CV cast iron and various pads. The dynamo test was executed with one kind of resin pad and three kinds of sintered pads suitable for 200 km/h trains according to a program which refers to UIC 541-3. The thermocouples were established in specific location in order to measure the temperature of disk and pads. In addition, the thermal imaging camera was used for capturing the instantaneous thermal characteristic of disk. The research results may be utilized to use as basis data of pad development for NCM-CV brake disk hereafter.
A study on the Critical speed of Korean Tilting Train Hanbit200

The critical speed above which the vehicle become unstable is one of the items that should be verified in the development of a new train. In the case of a high speed tilting train, which requires both higher critical speed and higher curving speed, the critical speed should be more carefully treated because the both requirements are in conflict with each other in the conventional train design. The main purpose of the present work is to estimate the linear and non-linear critical speeds of 200km/h Korean Tilting Train 'Hanbit200' under development. The newly developed self-steering mechanism was attached to the tilting train to ensure that the critical speed falls under the lower yaw stiffness which is needed to secure higher curving performance. The simulation for predicting the critical speed was done by a commercially available vehicle dynamics software. A full scale roller rig test was carried out to validate the numerical results and to verify the effectiveness of the self-steering mechanism.

Two modulus, strain modulus
and subgrade reaction modulus
are being used as a standard for bearing stiffness in Korea Railroad design. The first is used in Europe and the other is used in Japan. The methodologies to obtain the two modulus are similar in using plate. But testing methods are different in loading to plate. Therefore, according to soil strain range, there should be large gap in not only computations of deformation modulus but also the necessary time to test. At first, this paper focuses on the two kinds of test methods to evaluate bearing stiffness. Secondly, based on elastic theory, the theory to obtain the two coefficients are studied thoroughly. Finally, the correlations between the two coefficients were analyzed and evaluated based on the field test results more than 38 places. The matching values for subgrade and ground between
are proposed with the consideration of the proposed strain reduction factor (1.5 for subgrade and 3 for ground) and safety factor, respectively.
Investigation on the Safety of TTX in Strong Cross wind

The Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) development program is in progress for the purpose of running speed or passenger's comfort improvement at the curved track. However, the speed up and light weight of train make poor the dynamic safety of the TTX in strong cross wind. In this paper, 3-dimensional numerical analysis on the flow field around the TTX under strong cross wind is performed for each operating condition, such as the train speed, cross wind speed, tilting/nontilting condition, and so on. Due to the strong cross wind, the pressure distribution around the train becomes asymmetric, especially at the leading car. Asymmetrical pressure distribution causes the side force and strong unstability. The side force on the train is proportional to the train speed and cross wind speed. Based on the numerical results, the overturning coefficients are predicted for investigation of the train stability, and all of them are less than the critical value, 0.9. The results in this study would be a good data for providing importance to judgement of cross wind safety of TTX.
Installation Effect on Noise Reducer for Railway Traffic Noise

Community noise, especially a rail traffic noise has been serious social issues in Korea. Our society needs practical tools to reduce noise levels for public who live near the railway lines. This paper proposes a noise reducer for railway traffic noise. At the beginning, various types of reducers are discussed, with the advantages and disadvantages with respect to acoustical phenomena. Then, the acoustic effects are discussed based on an insertion loss measurement. After several types of reduces are installed at fields, the noise level is monitored with and without the reducer. The result shows that the proper selection of reducers affects the noise level by 6 dB. The statistics of the mean and a standard deviation turns out to be 3.2 dB and 0.8 dB, respectively. Noise reducers are strongly recommended for the place where apartments are densely constructed alone the railway. Installation of noise reducers seems to be an effective and practical solution for the community traffic noise reduction.
An Analysis of Rolling-Stock Information Maintenance System Real-Field Operational Results

We analyze the real-field operational results of the RIMS. Four aspects are considered; 1) economical, 2) managerial, 3) safety and reliability and 4) RIMS user evaluation. In economical aspect we investigate the fields where some economical gains are anticipated. In managerial aspect the efficiency and effectiveness of management through RIMS are investigated. The improvement of safety and reliability are qualitatively discussed. And RIMS user evaluation is performed through survey. We also suggest several conditions for the successful settlement of RIMS and future study area for RIMS to be more reliable and perfect.
A Study on The Sign System Following Installation of Screen Doors in Subway Platforms

The Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corp. have gradually installed screen doors in platforms of 115 subway stations in Seoul on lines 1, 2, 3, and 4. Installation in nine areas among those has been completed and screen doors are being operated as a model operation. Traffic signs should be clear for users. The essential functions of signs should be fully investigated from the aspect of user as well as the visual beauty and recognition. Signs should be able to provide users with information regarding location, position, directions, etc. Particularly, safety and convenient signs should be visually and sensually correlated. However, the entire screen doors in platforms installed in line 2 subway in Seoul are used for commercial advertisement, consequently, the functions and roles as public signs are not fulfilled aggravating inconvenience for users. In this study, cases have been studied to investigate requirements for user-oriented sign system in platform and public sign space to fulfill the functions of sign system in platform. Using an anthropometry approach, the study aimed to obtain the space to install the sign system and to systemize necessary and sufficient conditions for user-oriented system for platform in which screen doors have been installed using. The study suggests fundamental information to obtain the space of public sign system on the entire screen door.
A Method for the Analysis of Train/Slab-Track Interaction on Settled Roadbed

A numerical method for the analysis of train/slab-track interaction on the settled roadbed is developed based on the already developed analysis method of train/ballast-track interaction. The concrete slabs composed of the upper track concrete layer and the lower hydraulic bonded layer are modelled by a equivalent beam. The supporting stiffness of roadbed is evaluated with the modified boussinesq method suggested by Eisenmann. The track irregularity and the gap between slab and roadbed induced by settlement of roadbed are calculated by the effective method newly presented in this study. The validation of the developed method is investigated by a numerical example. The effects of train speed on train and slab track on the settled roadbed with sinusoidal shape of wave length 20m and amplitude 20mm are reviewed.
The Optimal Design Method of the Train Repair Facility based on the Simulation

This paper presents the optimal design method of the train repair facility based on the simulation analysis. The train is divided into the power car, motorized car and passenger car for the simulation process analysis and train repair facility is composed of each subsystems such as a blast, dry and wash workshop. In simulation analysis, we consider the critical (dependent) factors and design (independent) factors for the optimal design. Therefore, a simulation optimization uses Evolution Strategy (ES) in order to find the optimal design factors. Experimental results indicate that simulation design factors are sufficient to satisfy the conditions of dependent variables. The proposed analysis method demonstrates that simulation design factors determined by the simulation optimization are appropriate for real design factors in a real situation and the accuracy and confidence for the simulation results are increased.
A Numerical Study on the Smoke Control in Center-Platform Type Subway Station Fires

In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the effect of the smoke extraction system and fire shutters in subway station fires using FDS 4.0. Subway station used in the experiment was 145 m long. Simulation results are validated by comparing with experimental results. Simulation results showed good agreement with experimental results within
. 10 MW polystyrene was used as a fuel in the numerical prediction. Numerical predictions were performed in the center-platform type subway station in case of a kiosk fire. Temperature and CO concentration were lowered by the operation of smoke extraction system. But, the operation of fire shutters had little effect on temperature and CO concentration in the platform level.
Reliability Allocation Model for KTX-II High Speed Train

During the design phase of a system, which requires high reliability and safety such as aircraft, high speed train and nuclear power plant, reliability engineer must set up the target system reliability. To meet a reliability goal for the system, reliability allocation should be done gradually from the system to its element. For this end, first of all, we need to construct functional block diagram based on the design output and PWBS(Project Work Breakdown System). Another important input data for reliability allocation is the relationship between the cost and the reliability. In this study we investigate various reliability allocation models, which can be applicable to aircraft, vehicle, and power plant, and etc. And we suggest a proper reliability allocation model which can be effectively applicable to KTX-II high speed train to achieve the target system reliability.
The Improvement Plan on Fare and Ticketing System of Seoul Metropolitan Subway Considering Construction and Operational Costs

Operation a subway company requires high amount of early construction, operation and maintenance costs. Seoul Metro, one of the public subway companies in Seoul, Korea, has undergone operational deficit from its establishment, and the main reason is that the early construction and operation cost exceed the total revenue. Therefore, detailed researches on current operation system and possible alternatives are conducted to settle down finance trouble of the company. In particular, problems on operation and ticketing systems are analyzed, and based on that, necessity and detailed plan of railroad pass for one day are introduced and analyzed.

Measurement of Flow Velocity Distribution at Inlet and Exit of Diesel Particulate Filter

The flow velocity distribution at inlet and exit of a DPF was measured using a Pitot tube and 2-D positioning equipment. An adaptor which was designed for accessing the Pitot tube probe into inlet of the DPF was fabricated with inlet flange of the DPF. The Pitot tube which was mounted in the 2-D positioning machine could access to the inlet of the DPF through the rectangular window of the adaptor. Automation of the velocity measurement at the inlet and exit of the DPF was effectively achieved and measuring time was reduced drastically. The flow velocity distribution at the inlet of the DPF showed parabola shape with maximum velocity near to the center of the DPF, as expected. The velocity distribution at the exit of the DPF showed crown shape, that is, the flow velocity distribution near to the center of the DPF is lower than that at surrounded peripheral region of the DPF.
The Study for Railway Tourism System using Artificial Neural Network and Intelligent agent

Intelligent agent is to decide what customers need on the internet and offer them accurate information. In this paper, the system which can recommend the tourism items in terms of customer‘s needs is proposed by appling the intelligent agent to railway tourism system. Most of previous agents are focused on price. But, this study proposes the Railway tourism system which offers each customer the best suitable information based on quality of information and reputation. The customer's needs are analyzed through intelligent agent and the information which is suitable for customer's needs is obtained the Artificial Neural Network Model.
A Study on the Criteria of Settlement in Concrete Slabtrack

Recently a concrete slab tracks are being constructed on roadbed in the Gyoeng-bu 2nd phase high speed railways. In respdnding to this trend, new design standards and track materials maintenance systems, based on the slab track material safety and usage perspective, are needed. This research provides a roadbed design criteria and the maintenance system. The proposed roadbed design criteria and the maintenance system are based on the developed analysis meathod of train/slab-track interaction. where the roadbed settlement and train speed are utilized as mediating variables. In the analysis, the dynamic response of train/slab-track interaction apply to various speeds and settlements. the roadbed settlement is shown in a sinusoidal shape of wave, the scope of the settlement occurrence presented in its wavelengths, include 6meters, 10meters, 15merwes, 20meters, 30meters. The train speeds involved are 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400kilometers per hour.
Safety Characteristics Analysis of Korean Standard Communication Protocol for Railway Signalling

The communication protocol for interface among railway signalling systems is designed and established as national standard in Korean from a few years ago. So the communication link for information transmission among railway signalling system can be a good example of application of this standard. Communication protocol which is standardized among Korean railway signalling is considered to apply information transmission. And we confirmed there is no the states of deadlock of livelock in std. protocol which is applied formal verification which is one of the analytic method for inspection of safety characteristics in the design course of protocol. But the safety of protocol has to necessarily accomplish this normal analysis approach about satisfying requirement matters with such this analytic approach. In this paper we analyzed the safety characteristics of standard protocol for Korean Railway signalling through the requirement matters for safety transmission of railway transmission system which is required in international standard. So through this study we confirm whether it satisfies safety requirement matters of the level which require in international standard and tried to confirm whether standard protocol has enough safety character in the real railway field.
