Designing a Microphone Array System for Noise Measurements on High-Speed Trains

In this paper, noise source localization of the Korean high speed train was conducted by using delay and sum beam-forming method of a microphone array. At first, the microphone array having irregular configuration was designed and the resolution of which was analyzed from parameters such as 3-dB bandwidth and maximum side-lobe level. After the demonstration, the microphone array was applied on the high speed train and noise localization of the high speed train driving at 300 km/h was performed successfully.

Technologically advanced railway countries had a unique ability to design, test and evaluation systems for development of High-speed train system. To evaluate the performance of the train system in Korea for the development of advanced measurement technology and systems are needed. In this study, the Overall Measuring System(OMS) is going to be established to efficiently verify the performance, stability and reliability of the train system and the components, and verify of the maximum speed though an on-line test. OMS consist of vehicle measuring system, pantograph measuring system, video monitoring system and monitoring room was constructed for the overall measuring system and monitoring system. The results of this study were expected to contribute to technical improvement for evaluation of train system.
A Study on Evaluating System Performance for Light-Weight Rolling Stock

In this paper, a method is proposed to evaluate a number of alternatives for light-weight rolling stock recommended from experts in rolling stock and to decide an optimal alternative. At first, many customer needs from various fields in railroad are drawn and weights of customer needs are decided by AHP. Secondly, technical requirements that should be real specifications for light-weight rolling stock are set and weights of technical requirements are decided by QFD. Finally, we evaluate some proposed alternatives and conclude an optimal alternative of light-weight rolling stock with TOPSIS.

In evaluating the ride comfort of railway vehicles, relationship between passenger`s feeling and vibration characteristics is very important because human feeling is dependent on frequency spectrum of vibration. Therefore, the weighing curves in frequency domain are used to evaluate the ride comfort of railway vehicles. These curves have been defined in the Laplace transfer functions. It is necessary to convert the Laplace weighing function to the z weighing function in order to obtain the rms value in the time domain. In the present paper, we have applied Tustin`s approximation to transform the Laplace weighing function to the z weighing and validated this method by reviewing the various cases.
A Study on the DB establishment and traceable management of the Urban transit standardization project

The study and techniques of system engineering have been applied to various fields including space-air, national defense division in advanced countries. Korea is currently in the early stages of introducing system engineering scheme in railway system and national defense division restrictedly. As theory and application of system engineering covers a wide scope, documents management and requirement analysis technology applied to establishment of standard and core unit development of the research target. The techniques which are historical management and trace among standards for establishment of standard are introduced using SE tools and participating agencies shared the information by constructing of database from all documents which are generated from the project. Through the functional analysis of the requirements for the intelligent station monitoring system in basic design stage, established requirements are verified and will be made official announcement as standard of the intelligent station monitoring system.
Requirement Analysis and Development of TCMS

Recently, we developed a new subway train with many cooperative companies. The main controller of the subway train is Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), so we conducted requirement analysis of TCMS considering system performance, easy maintenance and service oriented flexibility. Hence, we adopted new bus architecture and QNX as a Real-time Operating System (RTOS) and developed hardware systems. The functions of TCMS are employed into two computers, service computer and control/monitor computer, to increase on their performance and to yield easy maintenance and to satisfy customer needs. The TCMS controls and monitors control devices equipped in the train through various protocols which are implemented in hardware. In order to evaluate the performance of the system and to satisfy reliability, various experiments including EMC/ECI were performed. Now the TCMS is installed on the newly developed train and is under performance evaluation through test driving.
A Study on the RAMS Analysis of Urban Maglev Train Control System

In this study, Urban maglev is applied to inductive-loop speed and position detection system for the top-level classification system for the entire system, and performed functional analysis On-board signal equipment, Wayside-signal equipment divided by the reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety through analysis of the proposed formula. RDB and by applying a system service for each device was calculated to availability, safety analysis. The PHA, FMEA, HAZOP over the Top Event of the FTA is performed by presenting the results. This also shows approach methods and relative activities for project to accomplish and ensure the system requirements.
Determination of Upper Limit of Rail Pad Stiffness for Ballasted and Concrete Track of High-Speed Railway Considering Running Safety

In this study, proposed is the methodology to determine the upper limit for stiffness of rail pad for the ballasted and concrete track in high-speed railway in the viewpoint of running safety, considering the dynamic characteristics of train and track and the operation environment. For the track irregularity, one of the most important input parameters for traintrack interaction analysis, the reference vertical track irregularity PSDs(power spectral densities) for the ballasted and concrete track in a wide range of frequencies were proposed based on those presented in France and Germany and that obtained from the measured data at Kyeong-Bu 1st phase high-speed railway line. Using these reference PSD models, the input data for the vertical track irregularity data were regenerated by random generation process, and then, the wheel load reduction rates according to the stiffness of the rail pads have been calculated by the train-track interaction analysis technique. Finally, by comparing the wheel load reduction rates calculated with the derailment criteria prescribed in the Korean standards for railway vehicle safety criteria, the upper limits for the stiffness of rail pad have been proposed.
Investigation of the Maintenance Criteria for the Rail Surface Defects in High-Speed Railways

The rail surface defects can cause the high impact load on the track and lead to the progress of the rail fatigue damage and the rail break. In case of the rail break, there is a great deal of risk for derailment, and thus the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects are of great importance. In this study, using the dynamic train-track interaction analysis program, the impact wheel loads and rail bending stresses according to the depths of the surface defects have been calculated with the input data of the rail surface irregularities measured at 43 spots with surface defects in the ballasted track of high-speed railway. Considering the irregularity of track geometry, the allowable limits of wheel load and rail bending stress have been set, and the maintenance criteria for the rail surface defects was suggested by analyzing the relationship of the maximum values of wheel load and rail bending stress versus depth and width of rail surface defect. The analysis results suggest that the allowable depth of the surface defect is determined approximately 0.2mm from the limit of the impact wheel load.
Deflection Limit based on Vibration Serviceability of Railway Bridges Considering the Correlation between Train Speed and Vertical Acceleration on Coach

In order to get dynamic serviceability of a train travelling on a railway bridge, comfort limits with the deflection of bridge and vertical acceleration on car body are proposed in Eurocode, Shinkansen design criteria, The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway. The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway has quoted Eurocode. Therefore it is expected that supplementation of comfort limit of railway bridge according to expansion of span length and the improvement traveling speed of trains in the future would relatively fall behind developed countries in railway. Therefore, in order to secure technological competitiveness in world market, the study was conducted to propose the deflection limit based on vibration serviceability of railway bridges that can consider bridge-train interaction and travelling speed increase. The parameter study and bridge-train dynamic interaction analysis was conducted to figure out the correlation of vertical acceleration on car body and bridge displacement according to the increase in travelling speed. Also, the trend of increasing vertical acceleration on car body according to the increase in travelling speed was confirmed, and the amplification coefficient of vertical acceleration on car body was suggested. And the deflection form and vibration of the bridge were assumed to be in harmonic motion, and transfer function and the amplification coefficient were used to develop the dynamic serviceability deflection limit of the high-speed railway bridge as a formula.
A Parametric Study on the Reason and Control of Crack during the Construction of Pier in Urban Transit

This paper is designed to propose methods to both analyze and control the reasons for cracks appearing during the construction of piers. For this aim, a numerical analysis was performed to identify the properties of crack which resulted from heat of hydration and differential drying shrinkage with the key influence factors considered. The results show that the thermal cracks occurred within a few days, and the drying shrinkage cracks within a few weeks. Meanwhile, settlement shrinkage cracks occurred within a few hours. Discussing the control methods based on the time of the cracks appearing, quality control, reduction of the unit quantity of cement, and the preservation of moisture on the surface are proposed as the realistic and effective methods for preventing settlement cracks, thermal cracks, and drying shrinkage cracks respectively.
An Analytical Study on the Effects of the Compensation Cant in case of Superimposition of Vertical and Horizontal Circular Curves

Superimposition of horizontal and vertical curves occurs frequently owing to geographical conditions. It may hamper train ride comfort and running safety and inflate maintenance costs. In this study, when the horizontal and vertical curves are superimposed, in order to analyze the effects of the compensation cant, the analytical study for running safety, ride comfort and track forces was performed in high speed line. From the analysis results, it was found that it is better to apply the compensation cant at superimposition part.
Deterioration Evaluation of Railway Line Segments Using Analytic Hierarchy Process

An effective approach to distributing budget to railway line facility improvement is to use investment priorities of railway line segments based on their deterioration. In this paper we present an evaluation method of railway line segment deterioration which can be used to distribute limited budget. Railway line facilities include rail track, railroad switch, subgrade, bridge, tunnel. These facilities and line shape can affect line segment deterioration. Deterioration evaluation method we present is a weighted sum of each component deterioration scores. The component weight can be obtained from experts using analytic hierarchy process.
Analysis of Operational Issues for ICT-based On-Board Train Control System

In order to minimize the maintenance cost at local lines, Information & Communication Technology based onboard train control system is being developed. Unlike the central traffic control based fixed block system, this system use a moving block method and railway driver direct control switch and railway crossing. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concerned main operational issues are as follows: the preparation of train operation, drivability, the role of driver and controller, block system and cost. We defined the role of driver and driver`s input data for train service, and we designed the business process of driver using UML tool. We considered the aspect of drivability, DMI is needed to support the braking moment for the driver and driver training simulator. We designed the driver business process for control of switch and railway crossing. We analyzed the fixed block system and moving block system to confirm the difference with the existing operational method. The cost analysis structure is also needed for the operation cost comparison.
