A Study on Impact Damage Characteristics of the Window Glass for High Speed Train

This study describes an experimental investigation about the impact damage characteristics of various types of high speed train window glass. Kinds of impact test standards for glass were studied and impact test considering scattering ballast were developed. Windows with external impact side made with annealed, heat strengthened and tempered glasses are likely to be broken by sharp tipped falling object. Broken shape of annealed glass is like line in part and that of heat strengthened glass is line on the whole. Tempered glass is destroyed to pieces. The change of tip type from sharp to blunt makes the higher destroyed level. Tempered glass has higher strength than annealed glass with blunt tip. When the protective films are attached to glasses, strength against destruction increases. In case of real ballast test, glasses without protective films were destroyed, but those with protective films are hard to be broken.
A Experimental Study on Wearing Phenomenon of Cu-type Wearing Slider for the Rail Motor Car`s Pantograph

The wearing slider of the rail motor car`s pantograph is considerable changed by the type and the material properties. Especially, precipitation and arc influences are main factors decided to life time of wearing slider and contact wire. This study is wearing phenomenon analysis of Cu-type wearing slider with high electric conductivity and resistance arc through experiment by running train. Author observed that wearing phenomenon of Cu-type wearing slider with normal and abnormal wearing characteristics and comparatively analysis precipitation, mileage and weight influences of exchanged Cutype and Fe-type wearing sliders. In this paper result showed that necessity for the application which is the Fe-type of wearing slider had superior wear resisting capacity etc., through tribology approach.
Aerodynamic Noise Characteristics of High-speed Trains by the Beamforming Method

In this paper, aerodynamic noise characteristics of high-speed trains were deduced from the beamforming method. First, pass-by noise of high-speed trains was measured by a microphone array system. This measurement suggested that the majority of the aerodynamic noise produced came from the bogie area, the pantograph and its cover, and inter-coach gaps. Then, beampower outputs of a position in high-speed trains were obtained from the beamforming method. By Fourier transform, sound characteristics of the position in the frequency domain were deduced from the beamforming power spectrum. From this study, aerodynamic noise characteristics from the major sources of high-speed trains were drawn.
A Study on the Design and Speed Control of the Switched Reluctance Motor for Railway Traction Application

In this paper, a magnetic analysis of SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) using 3d finite element method considering end-coil effect is presented. SRM models with different stator pole shapes are taken into consideration for the analysis of magnetic characteristics. It is observed that a stator pole shape model having a pole shoe depth is the most suitable one for railway traction application because it gives an improved inductance and torque characteristic. For a speed control of SRM, the PI and sliding mode controllers are applied to designed SRM with magnetic characteristic data obtained from the magnetic analysis. The simulations are carried out using Matlab-Simulink and the control performance is analyzed. By employing the sliding mode controller, the transient response as well as the steady-state error are much improved under a load variation of railway resistance under operation.
Noise Harmonic Reduction of IPMSM Based Next Generation High Speed Railway System using RCF-PWM

In this paper, The next Generation High Speed Railway Inverter system using RCF-PWM(Random Carrier Frequency Pulse Width Modulation) was developed to reduce electromagnetic noise. RCF-PWM method is randomized the switching frequency in the range between Semiconductor switching devices` maximum switching frequency and minimum switching frequency, Simulation program has been built using MATLAB/Simulink to verify the validity of study. Finally, the simulation results of Next Generation High Speed Railway inverter system using the RCF method was compared with the conventional SVPWM method.
Development of a Numerical Method of Vertical Train/Track Interaction in the Track Section with Hanging Sleepers

Hanging sleepers are frequently observed in the ballasted track with the rail of high rigidity. These hanging sleepers at the high speed line could cause such large dynamic force compared to those at the conventional line. This dynamic force would, in turn, deteriorate train running stability as well as riding comfort, and accelerate irregularity of track and failure of track materials, leading to a sharp increase in track maintenance cost. When the wheel-rail contact spring exhibits nonlinear behavior and some components of the system like hanging sleeper exhibit bi-linear behaviors, an effective analytical method is proposed for train-track interactions. The verification of the present method is carried out comparing numerical results by the present method and those by Ono`s method of RTRI.
Effect of Rainfall on the Behavior of MSE Wall

Since the collapse of MSE walls frequently occurs due to the rainfall, it is necessary to analyze the behavior of MSE wall depending on the characteristics of rainfall and the properties of permeability of backfill. In order to understand the behavior of MSE wall depending on the characteristics of rainfall and the properties of permeability of backfill, finite element analyses were performed on the typical MSE wall. With varying ratio of saturated permeability to rainfall intensity, porepressures, displacements and factor of safety were analyzed. As the ratio of the saturated permeability to rainfall intensity increases, the global factor of safety is found to increase. Based on the analyses, the use of permeability of backfill with
is desirable considering the characteristics of rainfall in Korea.
A Experimental Study on Strength Safety of Rail Steel using Gas Pressure Welding

This study was carried out for the purpose of improving driving safety and comfort of the railways quickly becoming popular. To conducted gas pressure welding to ensure the strength safety of continuous welded rail and rotating bending test tensile test was conducted. The element to determine the tensile strength of gas pressure welds at experiments be attributed to more upsetting length than pressure, according to increases of upsetting length, from brittle fracture to ductile fracture was observed. Through the biopsy of the fracture surface, according to the presence of brittle fracture could be evaluated to strength safety. In addition, mechanical strength of gas pressure welding depending on changes in upsetting length was different. Rotary bending test results were obtained to the infinite life according to exhibited higher fatigue limit of 373MPa at upsetting length 25mm.
The Efficiency Index Analysis of Railway Freight Car

KORAIL`s logistics business coefficient is improved slightly from 197.4 in 2009 to 190.7 in 2010 but the cost is still high compared to the revenues. In order to derive activities for the efficient logistics and measure their effects quantitatively, the analysis of various indexes that can be extracted from the statistical data is very important. In this study, the various indexes are analyzed to evaluate the efficiency of freight cars based on railway logistics. It can be used to estimate the various activities for the efficient logistics associated with freight cars. We suggest the Indexes as the number of transport, cumulative transport distance and transport income to evaluate the efficiency of freight cars and they should be applied according to the characteristics of each index.
A Study on the Quantitative Prediction Model for Setting the Target Value of Service Availability for a LRT Line

The Service Availability (SA) in the viewpoint of passenger is used as the key performance indicator (KPI) of quality of service in Light Rail Transit (LRT) Public-Private Partnerships projects. But there are many disputes on the target value of SA because of the lack of experience in SA. The target value of SA should be set at an early stage of the project to be specified on the system specifications and operation plan. Therefore, this paper developed the quantitative prediction model of SA to set the reasonably achievable target value of SA at an early stage of the LRT project. Also this paper analyzed the relationship and differentiation of SA and Train Punctuality (TP) that is mostly compared with SA.
LMDI Decomposition Analysis on Characteristics of Greenhouse Gas Emission from the Line of Railroad in Korea

Korean government is enforcing `Greenhouse gas target management` in order to achieve Greenhouse gas reduction target. To attain Greenhouse gas reduction target, companies in Korea must establish their GHG inventory system and analysis their GHG emissions characteristics for deduction of mitigation measures. LMDI(Log Mean Divisia Index) decomposition analysis is widely used to understand characteristics of GHG emission and energy consumption. In this paper, the characteristics of GHG emission from the line of railroad in Korea is respectively analyzed in terms of conversion effect, intensity effect, production effect and distance effect. A Study on Determining Economical Speed of Diesel Freight Locomotive

Rail transport has been considered an environmental-friendly transport mode compared with other transport modes such as ship, truck, and aircraft. However, air pollutions emitted by diesel locomotives have emerged as social issues. In addition, the railway industry may not be able to avoid a duty of alleviating greenhouse gases emission owing to the Korean government policies for green growth which is an economic paradigm that simultaneously pursues growth and environmental improvement. Moreover, rising oil prices has burdened a train operating company. The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology of determining an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive from the viewpoint of the train operating company. In the methodology, we first define an operational cost function based on various cost factors and then suggest formula to calculate an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive. To estimate the influence of cost factors such as diesel price, carbon taxes, and time costs on the speed of diesel freight locomotive, sensitivity analysis was conducted.
A Standardized Management Plan on the Characteristic Factor of Station to Meet a Customer Service in the Urban Transit

The saving of time, which is defined as the demand from passengers and the supply from the urban railway, must be balanced. The selected factors influencing on the balance are the traffic, customer contact facilities, the number of failures, customer complaints(VOC), passenger moving time and transfer stations. Also, the overall ratio of SMRT`s 4 lines is generated by differentiating the rate of each attribute in each factor. This is not only to differentiate the stations with peculiar factors but also to standardize criteria of the personalized services. Furthermore, as part of standardization, standard drawings of facility management are prepared for the improvement on the management of human resource and material. The drawings include passenger moving lines, location of safety incidents and also indicate the rating of the factors in each station and overall evaluation rating. In conclusion, this thesis aims to improve customer satisfaction constantly by reducing passenger moving time, through the differentiated management of each station.
A Qualitative Study of the Properties of the Korean Railway during the Japan Colonial Period

At first, the railway was built mainly for military purposes by Japan. After the annexation by Japan, the Korean railway became a means of colonization for Japan but the railway also promoted modernization. As a new transportation medium, it influenced economic, cultural and social development. Until now, research identifying the properties of the railway in the Japanese colonial period has been insufficient. In particular, microscopic study of the influence of the railway on social change has been insufficient. In this study we investigated the properties of Japanese colonial period railway. This paper will help further to clarify the properties of the railway in the Japanese colonial period.
