Study on Real-Time Load Simulator for Testing Propulsion Inverter Test
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 1~8
A newly-built inverter has to undergo a series of stress tests in the final stage of production line. This can be achieved by connecting it to a dynamometer consisting of a three-phase machine joined by a rigid shaft to a DC load machine. The latter is controlled to create some specific load characteristic needed for the test. In this paper a test method is proposed, in which no mechanical equipment is needed. The suggested test stand consists only of a inverter to be tested and a simulator converter. Both devices are connected back-to-back on the AC-side via smoothing reactors. The simulator operates in real-time as an equivalent load circuit, so that the device under test will only notice the behaviour of a three-phase machine under consideration of the load. In oder to prove rightness of the suggested test method, the simulation and actural experiment carried out emulation for a 2.2kW induction motor.
An Empirical Comparison among Initialization Methods of Holt-Winters Model for Railway Passenger Demand Forecast
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 9~13
Railway passenger demand forecasts may be used directly, or as inputs to other optimization models use them to produce estimates of other activities. The optimization models require demand forecasts at the most detailed level. In this environment exponential smoothing forecasting methods such as Holt-Winters are appropriate because it is simple and inexpensive in terms of computation. There are several initialization methods for Holt-Winters Model. The purpose of this paper is to compare the initialization methods for Holt-Winters model.
Fatigue Behavior of Catenary Wires by Environments Degradation
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 14~19
The effect of surface damage on fatigue properties of catenary wires were investigated to estimate their service lift. As surface defects of the wires caused by surface corrosion increase, surface roughness gets worse, and as roughness increases, it is easy for moisture coming from rain and dew to be condensed around uneven parts of the surface. The condensed moisture causes a locally severe corrosion which leads to damage of the wires. Corrosion of catenaty wires can make their actual lifetime shorter than that originally designed. The amount of decrease was more prominent as environmental conditions became more corrosive. They are also vibrated with some amplitude everytime pantographs touch contact line. The frequent cyclic load on the wire may result in a fatigue fracture. Surface damage by corrosion can make formation of crack initiation at fatigue. In the present study, the fatigue life of the used wire was measured 35 to 50% compared with that of new one in average.
Development of the Railroad Geotechnical Information Management System Using Web GIS
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 20~25
Railroad geotechnical information management system was developed by using Web GIS and DB in this study. The standardization of railroad geotechnical information is progressed by classifying three groups as like basic informations, vibration informations along railway lines and design drawings. The basic informations consisted of basic and dynamic properties of soils, geophysical exploration and seismic survey/exploration. And the specification for 'human exposure to whole-body vibration' was adopted to construct the vibration informations along railway lines. The informations as like drawings and photographs were saved by changing to graphic files in the standardization of design drawings. In the case of standardization of geographical information, the topographical maps(NGIS, 1:5000) were primarily used as digital maps. Another digital maps(KRRI, 1:5000) and their geographical DB based on NGI code system were added on this maps. The standardized informations were used to construct their database. And railroad information management system was developed using Entity-Relation(ER) model which had a good feasibility for expansion and transition to other system in designing stage of database. This system consisted of layer selection, search and analysis of geotechnical informations and Zeus DB was adopted for GIS operating and user interface. This system could be a good tool for saving, searching and analyzing the geotechnical and geophysical informations. These DB systems would offered the basic informations to plans, design and construction of railroad lines etc. in practical use.
A Study on the Characteristics of Internal and External Pressure Variation for KTX
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 26~31
A study is conducted to clarify internal and external pressure variation of passenger cabin for KTX. These pressure variation may give rise to the ear-discomfort for passenger and fatigue for carbody. In this study, the pressure variation of interior, gangway and exterior of KTX passenger car is measured by using the atmospheric pressure sensors and portable data acquisition system. The tunnel from 4000m to 200m in length are chosen far the investigation of tunnel length effects. From the results of experiment, the pressure variation of interior per second is under the ear-discomfort limitation in all of tunnel. And, We found that there are similar patterns of exterior pressure variation for each critical tunnel length. These results generally agree to RTRI's experimental result fur Shinkansen.
Comparison and Evaluation of Load Test Methods for Aluminum Car Body
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 32~36
Aluminum carbody for rolling stocks is light and perfectly recycled, but includes severe defects which are very dangerous to fatigue strength. Static load test has been performed up to date to assess structural safety of the carbody. However, static load test is not sufficient to evaluate fatigue strength of the carbody, because fatigue failure is caused by dynamic load. In this study, the established load test methods for carbody are described and the characteristics of the methods are discussed. Also, a testing method to simulate dynamic loading condition is proposed for evaluation of fatigue strength of the carbody. The results by the proposed testing method are compared with the results by the static load test and new findings are discussed.
A Situations and Improvements on the Rail Freight System
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 37~48
In this paper, I explain the situations and problems which are focused on the rail freight system. We have a many problems, which have been showed the long freight logistics time, and inadequate fare system. And rail freight system does not have a efficient marketing system, and unit load system. Therefore rail freight has been decreased modal share, which is estimated from 9.65% in 1995 to 6.25% in 2001(ton base). Recently, EU nations and America rail freight system reveals a good outcome, which keeps the balance in the black. The main factors which go into the black, is the enlargement the investment in rail freight and efficient management focusing on the unit load system, fare system, and personnel management. I suggest the several improvement ways, which will be helpful to advance the rail freight system. Fistly, I suggest the speed up the freight rail and efficient fare system. Secondly, I propose the unit load system and the regulation the truck focusing on curtailment of the social cost. Lastly, I make an overture of establishment the comprehensive logistics system.
A Study of Dynamic Characteristic of the Leaf Spring for Freight Wagon After the Derailment
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 49~54
Particularly derailing freight wagon, which are loaded with dangerous chemicals, has large damages on humans and environment. In this paper the dynamic characteristic of the laminated leaf spring under extreme situation, for example derailment, is examined. The leaf spring has a static hysteresis. Not only the friction value, but also the spring rate are influenced by this hysteresis characteristic. Because of the static hysteresis of the leaf spring the spring rate must be used in normal operation depending upon the loading and the kind of the excitation with the up to 10-fold value of the static spring rate. Some characteristics of the leaf spring can be treated like well-known viscous damping, but fer special situation (preload and/or excitation) particular calculation are necessary.
Fire Characteristics of Composites for Interior Panels Using Cone calorimeter
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 55~59
Composite materials were used widely due to merit of light weight, low maintenance cost and easy installation. But it is the cause of enormous casualties to men and properties because of weak about the fire. Particularly, it is more serious in case of subway train installed composite materials. For this reason, experimental comparison has been done fur measuring heat release rate(H.R.R) and smoke production rate(S.P.R) of interior panels of electric motor car using cone calorimeter. A high radiative heat flux of 50kW/㎡ was used to bum out all materials and to simulate the condition of fully developed fire case in the tests. It was observed that Heat Release Rate and Smoke Production Rate curves were dependent on the kinds of the interior materials. From the heat release rate curves, the sustained ignition time, peak heat release rate and total heat release rate were deduced, These data are useful in classifying the materials by calculating two parameters describing the possibility to flashover.
Harmonic Generation and System Response Characteristics in Electrified Railway(I) - Focused on System Response Characteristics -
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 60~64
Harmonic current originating from electric locomotives can be magnified due to the impedance characteristics of power supply circuit and bring about various problems. That is, electromagnetic interference with communication lines, operational trouble in signaling, overheat and/or vibration in power capacitor, mis-operation in protection relay and so on. Therefore, the exact assessment of the harmonic current flow must be undertaken at design and planning stage for the electric traction systems. for these reasons, this study propose a new approach to model and to analyse traction power feeding system focused on system response to current and voltage harmonic(PART I). Measurements of harmonics are also performed for railway power supply systems under normal operation. Spectrum and distortion analyses in measurement data are variously described in PART II.
Harmonic Generation and System Response Characteristics in Electrified Railway(II) - Focused on Measurement and Analysis -
Journal of the Korean Society for Railway, volume 7, issue 1, 2004, Pages 65~69
In reference to this study, Part Ⅰ showed how the system respond to the harmonics originated from electric locomotives. That is, the system response to the harmonics was derived by computational algorithm with numerical formulas in theoretical aspects. However, Real catenary system has complex configuration of conductors and it is an important point that if we can consider the circuit element of catenary conductors as an uniformly distributed RLC element. Moreover, harmonic characteristics in electric locomotive depend on its operational modes. From these point of view, measurements of harmonics are performed for real railway power supply systems under the various operational modes, and spectrum and distortion analyses in measurement data are described.
