A Pilot Study to Deploy the Railway Conflict Detection and Resolution System in Korean Railway

In this paper, we propose a pilot study to deploy the Railway Conflict Detection and Resolution System(RCDRS) in the context of Korean Railway(KORAIL). KORAIL plans to deploy in near future RCDRS, which is a decision support module placed on the top level of the Railway Traffic Management System(RTMS). This study entails the review of the state-of-art researches and projects in the field of the railway traffic management, as well as the analysis of the traffic characteristics of the major railroad lines in KORAIL. The analysis provides a basis to choose a solution approach for the railway conflict detection and resolution problem that each individual line faces. This study plays a role as a pilot study for a full systematic approach, in which interactions between lines require further advanced analysis to take the entire KORAIL lines into consideration rather than a myopic approach.
A Study on Material Selection of the Carbody Structure of Korean Tilting Train express(TTX) through the Verification of Design Requirements

In order to determine the most suitable material system for achieving the lightweight design while fulfilling the design requirements of carbody structures of Korean Tilting Train eXpress(TTX), aluminum carbody. composite carbody, and hybrid carbody combined with aluminum and composite structures were considered in the present study. The finite-element analysis was used to verify the design requirements or the TTX carbody structures with the material system considered in the design stages. The stresses in the carbody structures and deflections of underframe against static load cases were used as design criteria. The results show that the hybrid carbody structures are beneficial with regard to weight savings and structural integrity in comparison to aluminum and composite carbody structures.
Finite Element Analysis of Strain and Residual Stress in Weld Specimen

This paper consists of two parts. One is finite element analysis of the redistribution of residual stresses of weld specimen by cutting. This work is necessary to predict the actual residual stress distribution of weld specimens used in fatigue test. The other subject is to calculate the relaxation of residual stress and the strain field induced by cyclic loading. To obtain fatigue life of weldment, the value of strain amplitude at each position is necessary, for example in the strain-life approach, and the numerical results can be used to verify experimental strain measurements. Thermo mechanical finite element analyses were conducted on the commercial package ABAQUS.
A Study on the Evaluation of Acoustic Power of Korean Railway for Noise Prediction and its Application

For the reduction and efficient management of railway noise, first of all prediction of railway noise is necessarily requisted. At home and abroad many studies for prediction of railway nearby noise have been accomplished. But it is impossible to predict exactly for the Korean Railway, because the acoustic powers for each rolling stock used in Korea have not been built yet. So in this study, acoustic powers for each Korean rolling stock such as Samaeul, Mugungwha were builded acceding to the speed and rail support systems. Predicted results using the acoustic powers suggested in this study are compared with measured results and it is known that these acoustic powers can be used for precise prediction of railway noise.
Risk Assessment for Railway Related Accidents in Korea

This paper presents the procedures and the results conducted by the proposed one for the risk assessment based on the accident statistics in the Korean railway. Approximately 1200 accident data were used for this study, and risk models were developed to describe the potential hazards. A risk assessment was conducted using the potential problem analysis technique qualitatively. Additionally, this study performed a regional risk assessment. The results of this study showed that the risks for collisions between trains and derailment are relatively low. However, grade crossing and public accident and accidents of workers on tracks take high risks. A large number of accidents is concentrated on the three regions such as Suwon, Chunan, and Chungrangri.
A Development of a Detail Design Software for High-speed Catenary System(I)

This study presents a development of DeCatS(Detail Design of High Speed Catenary System) which is a software to design high speed catenary system automatically. The program is developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute with the support of KHSR. A process of developing it and a comparison with LEXCAT. in order to demonstrate a preciseness of that, were performed. In the program, decision of H-beam, cantilever fitting, management of materials, automatic drawing and etc. according to input conditions can be accomplished. In this study, especially the program algorithm for the decision of mast was introduced.
Verification Test of Communication Protocol for Interface between EIS and LDTS

According to the computerization of railway signalling systems. the communication protocol for interface between these systems are required. Therefore the new communication protocol for railway signaling system is required. Generally, there are two verification method for new designed protocol in the industrial and academic fields. One is the laboratory testing method which is very popular and general technique. In our research the comparison between existing and new designed protocol for signaling is described and the verification test results are also represented. From these laboratory test, we are verified the conformance of new designed protocol. Another method is verified by formal method. The format verification method is widely used at safety-critical system design but this approach is nor popular at verification communication protocol. However it is very important to verify the safety of new designed protocol for railway signaling system because signaling systems are very safety-critical systems. So, the methodology for formal verification of designed protocol is also reviews in this paper.
Train Performance Simulation and Evaluation for Korea High Speed Train

Computer aided simulation is an essential part in planning, design, and operation of railway systems. To determine the adequate performance and specification of railway system, it is necessary to calculate train performances such as distance, speed, power during train's running. This paper presents result of train performance simulation using the program that developed for Korea high speed train. To verify result of simulation, we have compared that with experiment data.
A Study on the Fatigue Life Estimation Using Butt Weld Bead Profiles

Arc-type Wheel Profile Design and Test Results

The rolling-stocks on conventional line have suffered wheel problems due to the incompatibility between wheel and track condition. Especially, The 1:40 coned wheel profile's wear is very severe and these increase wheel maintenance cost. Thus we designed several arc-type wheel profiles coned 1:/20 to reduce the wheel flange wear and analyzed the dynamic performance of designed profiles. Tests carried out in service line to analyse the dynamic performance and verify the wear reduction for two cases of profiles. Test results shows the equal level of dynamic performance and the improvement of wheel flange wear compared with the conical wheel profile coned 1:40.
An Experimental Study on the Aerodynamic Effects Generated by a Train Passing near by Platform(Conventional Railway Station Field Test)

A series of filed tests have been performed to investigate the aerodynamic effects on platform of the railway station during the passage of train that can be unpleasant and even dangerous to the pedestrians. To assess the aerodynamic effects on the platform, two aerodynamic properties has been measured; one is the wind gust induced by the train and the other is the pressure pulses generated when the nose and the tail of train passes. To measure these aerodynamic properties during the train passage, an array of hot-wire type anemometers and several sets of pressure transducers have been used, respectively. This paper deals with the filed test on conventional railway at about 100km/h operational speed, in which total 34 measurements has been made at the Bugok station in Seoul-Busan line for Saemaul-ho and Mugungwha-ho train. The results showed dramatic differences in the aerodynamic features between the two trains that are supposed to originate from the contrasting nose shapes of the trains.
Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Welded Joints by an Instrumented Indentation Test and Fatigue Life Evaluation

When material properties depend much on positions in a material or it is difficult to make test specimens from a material or component, an instrumented indentation test described in ISO 14577-1, 14577-2 or KS B 0950 can be used to measure material properties and damage. In this study, first of all, the principals of the instrumented indentation test, KS B 0950 are introduced and yield strengths, tensile strengths and work hardening exponents of base materials, heat affected zones and weld materials are measured. In addition, the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the material properties is investigated. Finally the fatigue lift of butt welded specimens are evaluated by the local strain approach. To calculate local strains and stresses, elasto-plastic finite element analysis is conducted using the measured properties.
The Analysis of Pile Bridge Abutments on Soft Clay for Loading from Lateral Soil Movement

Pile Bridge Abutments constructed on a soft base are affected by a lateral flow. Laterl flow pressure acting on Pile is very difficult to calculate because of, interation of ground and Pile. So, it is different to estimate displacement of Pile Bridge Abutments. This paper studied about possibility of the displacement estimation of Pile Bridge Abutments by using the equivalent sheet pile wall theory that was Randolph proposed in 1981. Analysis program through using the SAGE CRISP that is FEM program. Analysis data used Centrifuge test results of Springman(1991), Bransby(1997) and Ellis(1997)'s paper. In conclusion, maxium displacement that is carried out by centrifuge test and numerical analysis has occured at the head of pile, as well as Maximum displacement of pile is closely similar. But the moment acting on pile of numerical analysis is under estimated compare to the centrifuge test. Through the comparative study, it is found that displacement estimation by equivalent sheet pile wall is in relatively good agreement with the results of centrifuge test.
Analysis Of Spatial Impact With Seoul Subway Line 7 Construction

In order to account for a price variation of apartment that places near a newly constructed subway station, a spatial hedonic model was developed to examine spacial characteristics that affect a purchasing price of an apartment using a White Estimator. In particular, the paper aims to examine various effects of subway 7 construction on an apartment price in Seoul Metropolitan Area. As explanatory variables, an apartment size, distance to a closest subway station, distance to the Central Business District (CBD) of Seoul, the number of years after building, and a lagged variable of the apartment purchasing price were used. The lagged variable plays a role of representing a spatial weighted average of previous prices of other apartments that locate within 3 km from the apartment. For a precise study, an entire sample was divided into two sets, southern area and southwestern area of Seoul, and two different spatial hedonic models were estimated. Not only before and after analysis, but also with and without analysis were conducted to compare with different effects of the spatial characteristics of two areas. The results show that before the construction of the subway 7, the prices of the apartments in the southern area were more sensitive to the apartment size, the distance to a closest subway station, the distance to the CBD, and the prices of the other apartments locating within 3km rather than those in the southwestern area. After the construction, on contrast, it is found that the apartment purchasing prices in the southwestern area are more sensitive than those in the southern area due to people's expectation regarding a new development around the subway station. In addition, the prices of the apartments locating closely with a transfer station are more likely to go up by increase in the apartment size, the distance to the station, and the prices of the other apartments within 3 km. Compared with the negative effects of the distance to the station on the prices in the other models, the positive effect of the distance to the transfer station might be caused by the characteristics of commercial area in which people are not likely to live.
