A Study of New High Temperature Grading for Modified and Unmodified Asphalt Binders
Huh, Jung-Do ; Cho, Gyu-Tae ; Nam, Young-Kug ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 91~102
On the basis of several experiments peformed, Bahia et al. (1998) concluded that the current Superpave PG-grading system failed to characterize grading specification of fill modified binders. This conclusion motivates us to investigate the correct grating system suited for modified asphalt binders. The main concept of this development is originated from the relationship between rut depth and binder properties at high temperatures. A new grading system for modified asphalt binders suggested here somewhat resembles to the unmodified binder grading one developed by Huh et al. (2000). Thus, this investigation will provide a unified single theoretical equation of high temperature grading that can apply both to modified and unmodified binders, and will check its effectiveness with the laboratory and the field rut data reported by independent studies. Successful results observed may allow to construction of a correct grading system in the near future.
Assesment of Applicability of Recycled Aggregates for Highway Pavement Materials
Kim, Kwang-Woo ; Ryu, Neung-Hwan ; Doh, Young-Soo ; Li, Xiang-Fan ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 103~112
This study was performed to evaluate applicability of recycled aggregates as subbase and surface concrete materials for cement concrete pavement. Laboratory compaction test, CBR test and plate load bearing test were conducted to evaluate applicability for pavement subbase materials. Recycled concrete for surface course was manufactured with a design strength of
. Normal coarse aggregate was substituted with recycled aggregates with five different ratios, 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% for recycled concrete mixes. Fresh concrete Properties, concrete strength properties for the five substitution percentages of recycled aggregates after 28-day curing and freezing-and-thawing resistance were evaluated experimentally. Based on the experimental results, it was concluded that the recycled aggregate was the material good enough to use for subbase material, and 40% or lower substitution ratio was an appropriate percentage of recycled aggregates replacement for surface concrete.
A Relation of Viscoelastic Properties to Empirical Properties of Korean Asphalt Binder
Kim, Nam-Ho ; Lee, Kwan-Ho ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 113~121
Among the currently available binder specifications, Superpave Performance Grade asphalt specification is regarded as a superior specification on its theoretical background as well as pavement performance relationship. Many difficulties are expected; however, for Superpave implementation in Korea because of heavy burden of equipment cost as well as lack of trained personnel in asphalt industry, which may too much barrier to overcome in Korean situation. As an effort to improve qualify of asphalt binder, recently, people discuss about a possibility of constituting a performance-based asphalt specification using rather easy-to-measure asphalt properties. The objective of this paper is to determine the possibility of constituting a performance-based asphalt specification using an empirical asphalt properties, such as penetration ring and ball softening point rather than using fundamental properties of asphalt. Nine straight asphalts, that covers entire straight asphalt from all Korean refineries, and eighteen modified asphalts that were modified from two modifiers were included in the study. An analysis was made through a comparison between empirical properties and Superpave PG criteria. This study concluded that it may possible to constitute a pseudo-Superpave-like specification using an empirical asphalt properties as a specification criteria. Therefore, more systematic research is needed to constitute the asphalt specification.
Mechanical Properties of High-Early-Strength Concrete for Early Traffic Opening
Won, Jong-Pil ; Kim, Hyun-Ho ; Ahn, Tae-Song ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 123~130
This study was performed to enhance mechanical properties of high-early-strength concrete using regulated-set cement for early traffic opening with various mixtures. Restraint of moisture and thermal movements of concrete pavement in actual field conditions, by external or internal restraining factors, generates tensile stresses which introduce microcracks and thus reduce the mechanical properties of concrete. Fiber reinforcement of concrete is an effective approch to the control of microcrack and crack development under tensile stresses. Three different types of regulated-set cement which recently have been used in Korea and two different types of fiber were adopted. Fibers were added and their mixtures are compared with plain high-early-strength concrete mixture. From the test results, fiber reinforced concrete was increased mechanical properties of high-early-strength concrete using regulated-set cement than the plain concrete.
A Study for Roughness of Joungbu Expressway
Kim, Sung-Ho ; Suh, Young-Chan ; Cho, Yoon-Ho ; Park, Kyung-Boo ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 131~140
Concrete pavement of Jungbu Expressway composed of CRCP(Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement) and JCP(Jointed Concrete Pavement). The CRCP was firstly constructed and applied to new expressway in Korea. It is a good source of the study to analyze the performance of CRCP and JCP because it experiences same amount of traffic and environmental loading. Up to the present, condition survey has conducted several times during 13 years but roughness measurement has not been carefully conducted. Through comparisons among several types of pavement(CRCP, JCP, Asphalt) by roughness, CRCP is superior to JCP. In addition, connected sections in the highway such as bridges and tunnels that have higher IRI values, about 5mm/m, than normal sections should be considered appropriated maintenance such as diamond grinding. The relationship between IRI and distresses carried out by Korea Highway Cooperation in 1999 skewed that the number of crack is related to IRI value in JCP, while other distresses of JCP and CRCP are not shown clearly. The comparison study with IRI values between Jungbu Expressway and GPS-3(JCP) and GPS-5(CRCP) of LTPP data also showed that roughness of Jungbu Expressway is not inferior to that of the state. Some of section showed larger values of IRI are linked with under-9round structures for passages and drainages. The overall performance considering only roughness, the CRCP is also superior to JCP in sections with under-ground tunnels.
Application of the Main Algorithm of Pavement Management System For the Korea Expressway System
Suh, Young-Chan ; Park, Kyung-Boo ;
International Journal of Highway Engineering, volume 3, issue 2, 2001, Pages 141~147
Maintenance cost for managing the whole network of Expressway system in Korea increases rapidly with the increase of the total length of the system. Implementation of the Pavement Management System(PMS) is essential for efficient management of the Expressway with a limited budget. The purpose of this study is to develop the main algorithm of PMS for Korea Expressway System and to associate the algorithm with database and the Highway Geographic Information System(HGIS) recently developed. Emphasis is laid on developing the algorithm as easy as possible, so that the users can use the PMS without practical difficulty. PMS is not the decision maker, but just a supporting system for the user. The algorithm is designed in such a way that the users can modify the decision criteria if necessary. The user is the one who makes the final decision of the priority and the maintenance alternatives. The users can also inquire the current condition of the whole Expressway network in detail by association of the database and the algorithm with HGIS.
