Development of Structure Analysis Program for Jointed Concrete Pavement Applying Load Discretization Algorithm

Recently, the new pavement design method considering Korean environment and the specification for improving performance of pavement are being developed in Korea. The Jointed Concrete Pavement Program Applying Load Discretization Algorithm (called HEART-JCP) is one of the results of Korea Pavement Research Project in Korea. HEART-JCP program is developed to analyze various loading condition using the load discretization algorithm without mesh refinement. In addition, it can be modified easily into multi-purpose concrete pavement nidyses program because of the modularized structure characteristic of HEART-JCP. The program consists of basic program part and load discretization part. In basic program part, the displacement and stress are computed in the concrete slab, sub-layer, and dowel bar, which are modeled with plate/shell element, spring element and beam element. In load discretization program part, load discretization algorithm that was used for the continuum solid element is modified to analyze the model with plate and shell element. The program can analyze the distributed load, concentrated load, thermal load and body load using load discretization algorithm. From the result of verification and sensitivity study, it was known that the loading position, the magnitude of load, and the thickness of slab were the major factors of concrete pavement behavior as expected. Since the result of the model developed is similar to the results of Westergaard solution and ILLISLAB, the program can be used to estimate the behavior of jointed concrete pavement reasonably.
A Parameter Study of Stuctural Respanse Model in Flexible Pavement Substucture Layers

Several design methods from overseas are employed without considering different conditions such as material properties, climate, and traffic condition in this country. Therefore, there are limitations in application. Therefore, new pavement analysis system which is able to design a pavement efficiently and economically should be set up. In this study, 243 probable sections are classified depending on values of layer thickness and elastic modulus, and the effect of load types for the probable sections are analyzed. The section showing larger load distribution is chosen for analysis. As a result of sensitivity, a layer thickness has more influence on pavement than an elastic modulus does. The stress distribution of FWD test load is larger than that of circular load. This study compares outputs between nonlinear elastic model and linear elastic model. Based on the result, this study finds nonlinear elastic model considering stress condition in the ground is recommended for subbase.
Fundamental Study for Compaction Methods by Mechanical Tests

In this study, compaction evaluating program based on ASTM critria is developed bu analyzing the results of laboratory tests. And the laboratory tests such as compaction test, triaxial test and resonance column test of subgrade soils are performed to develop compaction management methodology at seven test sites. Especially, to figure out chararteristic with changing compactive efforts, the test was carried out at five levels of compactive efforts at each soil sample. Database was set up from the test results. With the methodology using mechanical property - the elastic modulus, the gap between road design and management and road construction management is narrowed. The regression equation of G/
is proposed at each strain level of subgrade soils according to AASHTO criteria, and the relationship between fundamental properties of soil mass and degree of compaction is derived as well. The development of compaction management and field compaction management method is proposed by the elastic modulus based on mechanical tests.
A Study on Strength Characteristics of Jeju-island's Scoria(Song-E)

Song-E(scoria) is civil material that we frequently meet with in road building in Jeju-island. It is known that Song-E is the material of high crush and large particle. But, the study on the scoria is not enough, so there are many difficult in handling method. In this study, We research basic strength characteristics on Song-E gathered at various part in Jeju-island. Results of this study(strength characteristics of Song-E) are applied to design of road, breast wall and slope as basic data.
