A Study of Male Students' Experience Majoring in Nursing
Kim, Mi-Hee ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 183~193
Purpose: This study attempted to describe the essential structure of male students' experience as nursing majors. Method: The data were collected through the in-depth interviews of seven male students majoring in nursing. The analysis of data were made using phenomenological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi(1978). Result: In this study, five essential themes emerged. They are:
Strong initial -though subsequently declining- hesitation over choice of major
Challenging, ongoing effort to survive in an environment of new and unaccustomed experiences and relationships
Recurring sense of reassurance and relief upon occasions of unexpected success
Growing internalization and acceptance of their role as nursing students or as future nurses
Ambivalent feelings resulting from the contradiction between their vision concerning their future as nurses and their worry concerning their future as male nurses
Conclusion: With an increasing number of male students majoring in nursing, this study will prove helpful not only in understanding male students' experience while majoring in nursing but also in describing their needs for systemic and emotional support.
A Study on the Psychological Home Environment and the Depression of High School Students
Kim, Soon-Chun ; Park, Hyoung-Sook ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 194~204
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data needed to create more desirable psychological home environment and the prevention and relief of depression by examining the relations between psychological home environment and depression with the subjects of high school students. The study materials included standard questionnaires made up of forty two questions on psychological home environment by Dr. Jeong, Won-sik(1981), twenty one questions on depression indicators by Beck(1969). Collected data were analyzed by using SPSSWIN 10.0 Program through frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The main results of this study were as follows; Out of 210 perfect scores for the psychological home environment of the subjects, the mean was
, opening was
, affection was
, autonomy was
, and achievement was
. The depression of the subjects were slight, showing
, with normal condition (0-9scores) 40.0%, slight depression(10-15scores) 23.3%, mild depression(16-23scores) 20.3%, severe depression(24-63scores) 16.4%. The analyses of the relation between psychological home environment and depression of the subjects reveal that achievement-depression(r=.192, p=.000), opening-depression (r=-.296, p=.000), affection-depression(r=-.377, p=.000), and autonomy-depression(r=-.341, p=.000) has all meaningful relations. In summary, these data can be interpreted that high school students were likely to feel more depressed when they recognized their own home environment as under the burden of achievement, and to feel less depressed when they recognized it as open, affectionate, and autonomous.

A Study on the Factors Affecting Smoking Cessation Behavior of University Student Smokers
Park, Young-Im ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 229~238
This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting smoking cessation behavior of the university student smokers for developing the effective smoking cessation program. For this purpose, data were collected from 64 students registrated at the university health center for anti-smoking acupuncture through May, 2003. Data were analyzed with percentile, mean, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation by SPSS/PC program. The results were as follows ; There was significant relationship in the scores on perceived benefits(t=-2.05, p=.045), chance-health locus of control(t=-2.28, p=.026) and nicotine dependence (t=-1.96, p=.056) according to the grade. And also there was significant increase in the nicotine dependence in the higher grades. There were significant positive relationship between external locus of control and perceived benefits(r=.389, p=.001), perceived barriers and benefits(r=.457, p=.000), and significant negative relationship between the daily life activities and perceived barriers(r=-.350, p=.005). From these results, it can be concluded that the effective smoking cessation program could be considered of perceived benefits & barriers, and nicotine dependence to promote anti-smoking behavior for university student smokers.
The Effect of Computer-Assisted Instruction(CAI) through the Multimedia CD-ROM on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse
Bae, Jeong-Yee ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 239~251
The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of education for prevention of child sexual abuse (rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment etc.) of children in elementary school students. Incidences of sexual abuse in Korea is ranked 3rd in the world. Sexual abuse of children, particularly, is one of the most serious crimes that affect both the victimized children and their family. The issue related to sexual abuse of children has been ignored, and there is a lack of systematic education to prevent sexual abuse of children either for children or their parents. Furthermore, lack of knowledge and poor attitude of teachers limit their capability to provide education for sexual abuse prevention to the children. The education for teachers may change their knowledge of the sexual abuse and their attitude toward it and improve their capability in helping children. 223 Korean elementary school students participated in this study. Research design was One group pretest-posttest design. The education given to the subjects included 4 hours through the multimedia CD-ROM on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The education program was developed based on a survey. School- aged- children, parents, and teachers were interviewed to reveal their educational needs based on their experiences related to sexual abuse. This program includes such as safety education, crisis management, resource person(s), and phone numbers of available hospital. Data was collected before, during and after the education was given to the subjects, to assess their knowledge and attitude toward child sexual abuse. Two instruments were used in this study. Using Cronbach's ALPHA validity and reliability of 2 instruments were tested. The analysis of the data was done with Window SPSS 10.0 for descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. The results of this analysis were as follows : 1. After education, the score of school nurses knowledge was higher than before(t= -4.677, p=0.000). 2. After education, the score of school nurses attitude was not higher than before (t=0.131, p=0.896). The findings from this study will provide an intervention strategy for prevention of sexual abuse in children.
Constipation and Activities of Daily Living of the Institutionalized Elderly
Shim, Hyung-Wha ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 252~261
Purpose: This study attempts to develop the basic data of Constipation reduction program for institutionalized elderly by surveying the constipation and the ADL (Activities of Daily Living) of them. Method: Data are collected by nurses caring for four hundreds five institutionalized elderly during May through July in 2004. Questionnaire contains a bowel assessment, constipation control intervention, and ADL. Result: The constipation rate was found to be 43%. The 82.5% of the study sample was treated with laxatives, and a 59.9% of the sample was practicing enema. The average score of the ADL was 38.32(range: 0 - 100). According to surveying on the ADL in relation to the function of the constipation, ADL is found to be higher in the non-constipation group than the constipation group (t=-2.786, p=.006). Conclusions: The institutionalized elderly tended to have a high rate of constipation. The elderly having constipation was almost dependent on laxatives and enema for relaxing constipation. The high rate of constipation was related to the low performance of the ADL.

The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 10, issue 2, 2004, Pages 278~288
Purpose: Structural equation model was analysed to explore the determinants of health behaviors of university nursing students in Korea. Study subjects: Four hundreds seventy eight university nursing students were selected by random cluster sampling from five universities located in the middle area of Korea. Data collection: The data were collected by questionnaires about demographic characteristics, stressful life events, perceived social support, perceived health status and health behaviors. Results: 1. Living with(out) family did not show direct effect on health behaviors. 2. Stressful life events and social support showed indirect effect on health behaviors via perceived health status; higher score of stressful life events predicted negative health behaviors. 3. The higher score of perceived health status predicted positive health behaviors. Recommendation: To improve the health behavior of nursing student, the program for positive perceived health status is necessary, which includes the social support and stressful life event control program. Each nursing school should be encouraged to develop the program for increasing positive perceived health status. It would be more effective to develop health program separately according to the demographic or social characteristics of the students. And following studies could be suggested to identify and promote the validity and reliability of perceived health status and health behaviors measurements.
