Kang Nam-Mi ; Hyun Tai-Sun ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 7~14
The use and need of health and nutrition information on the PC communication and internet among university students at Chungbuk area were investigated. The data from 167 students from two different universities were collected and analyzed from March to May, 1998. The results are as follows. 1. Male students were 27.5% and female students were 72.5%. 2. Sixty percent and 74.7% of the students had ever used PC communication and internet, respectively. Higher proportions of male students had experiences in PC communication and internet use than fe male students. The main reasons to use PC communication and internet were 1)to obtain information and knowledge(67.4%) 2)to enjoy(10.5%), 3)to make friends or to talk(5.3%) 3. About 40% of the experienced students of the PC communication of internet obtained health or nutrition information. However, only 25% of the experienced students obtained the nutrition information from the internet. Only 10% of the students agreed that the information from the PC communication and internet was very useful. The reasons not to use the information from the PC communication and internet were 'lack of expertise of the information' and 'long response time'. Many students thought that the information provided through the computer should be improved in terms of variety and applicability to the real situation. 4. Among the 33 topics of the health and nutrition information given on the questionnaire, both male and female students had the greatest interest in stress management. The next topics in which female students had interests were diet for weight control, health problems related to menstration, dietary assessment, and cancer prevention. In male students, dietary assessment, infant nutrition management, hypertention diet were the main interests. On the basis of these results an information system on health and nutrition management during the lifecycle for Korean women will be constructed on the internet.
Nursing students' initial clinical experience
Moon Mi-Sook ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 15~27
In order to help students through their initial clinical experience, faculty must understand more fully the moaning of this experience for nursing students. This study was performed to understand and to explain what is the essential structure of nursing students' initial clinical experience. A grounded theory approach was conducted to explore the actual experience of nursing students' first clinical experience. Each of the nursing students' descriptions about their initial clinical experience was analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's method. The results of the study were as follows : From the 172 written descriptions and 7 in-depth individual interviews, 128 concepts were extracted. After identifying the concepts' formulated meaning, they were organized into 29 subcategories and the following 12 categories . burden, encountering difficulties, self-discovery, grasping actuality, acquirement of nurse's nature, special character of experience, special character of relationship, external effect, problem oriented coping, emotional oriented coping, affection for nursing, skeptical view of nursing. Five hypotheses were derived from the analysis. 1) Burden is an obstacle to grasp nursing actuality. 2) Special character of experience and external effect have an effect on grasping nursing actuality, 3) Encouragement, a part of external effects, will increase nursing student's affection for nursing. 4) Affection for nursing through first clinical experience facilitates positive nursing view and scholarly zest. 5) Disappointment with the difference be tween theory and reality will cause the student to take a skeptical view of nursing. It is hoped that the knowledge gained from this qualitative study will enable faculty to enter more fully Into the world of nursing students as they embark on their initial clinical experience.

To achieve the goal, an adequate database protocol for korean women as well as health and nutrition management information system based on our culture and lifestyle should be developed. We suggest to categorize the information on health and nutrition management of Korean women according to the lifecycle as follows : 1) Health and nutrition management of adolescent women 2) Health and nutrition management of women in the marritable age 3) Health and nutrition management of pregnant women 4) Health and nutrition management of delivering women 5) Health and nutrition management of lactating women 6) Health and nutrition management of menopausing women 7) Prevention of women diseases 8) Stress management of women This system including women health and nutrition management information database provides health and nutrition management Information on the network so that anyone can use the information at any time. To constuct the system, it is necessary. 1. to identify information need for health and nutrition management of Korean women. 2. to provide the guideline of information system for women health and nutrition management. 3. to construct Information system for women health and nutrition management.
Analysis of the Meaning of Reminiscence in Korean Elderly : by analysing Korean Novel Literature
Lee Eun-Jeong ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 38~52
The aim of this study is to analyze the meaning of Korean elders' reminiscences by analysing korean novel literature from 1930s to 1990s. The results of this study are as follows : The moaning of elders' reminiscences are the reflecting on their life, conquesting the excessive fondness the regrecting, the pursuiting of the powers, the pursuiting of the love(Jeong) and the conformation of their exsistence. Elders have tried to examine their life through reflection on their life tha? they did not live good life as son and daughter for parents and as parents for children and that they have foolishly lived, on dream that they did not come true, on their learning that they did not unsatisfied. But elders conquest the excessive fondness. They have felt their limitations of power in the conflict of human relation, the economic matter and the difficult predicament, and have finally accepted their life as it is by conquesting from their tenacity. It is dynamically found that both the reflecting on their life and conquesting of the excessive fondness. And they pursuit the powers. It means the pursuit of the vital powers, the vigorous powers and the competency, Elders have pursuited their vitality, vigor and competency through their reminiscences and have wanted to be recognized by others as a powerful being. These have dynamic and compounded aspects. Elders have pursuited the purely love (Jeong) through their reminiscence togather with their sisters and brothers. And the confirmation of their exsistence refer to through their own situation of health, condition, children, neighbourhood and doing their duty as a human. Elders have confirmed the present value of their being through the reflecting the present, past self, other men around themselves, children, neighborhood and the doing their human duty as a good men. Therefore the results of this study can offer new view on the elders' reminiscences that we have to understand them as a process as what they are, escaping from the simple logic that elders' reminiscence have a positive or a negative effects. Also, this study which have examined the natures of Korean elders' reminiscences can cast a new light on elders' nursing proper for Korean culture.

Lee Kang-Yi ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 53~65
This study was designed and undertaken to analyse the factors associated with sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients. The data were collected from September to November, 1997. The subjects in this study were 77 diabetic patients who visited to check their blood glucose level to the outpatient department of internal medicine in one of hospitals located in Taejon city, The questionnaires developed by Derogatis L. R. were used. Data were analysed using percentages, means, 1-test, ANOVA and Peason-correlation coefficients, done with the SAS program. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The mean score of sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients was higher than the mid level as 3.14 points in the 5 points scale and male patients' score was a little higher than female's. 2. The mean score of factors associated with sexual life was 3.54 points in spouses' support, 3.44 points in sexual attitude and 2.60 points in body image in the 5 points scale, and 2.76 points in the sexual act in the 6 points scale. The score of above all factors were higher in male patients than female patients. 3. The significant factors associated with sexual satisfaction were spouses' support, body image and sexual act. That is, the higher spouses' support, the more positive body image and the more frequent sexual act, the higher patients' sexual satisfaction. 4. In the relationships between the sexual satisfaction and the general characteristics of the diabetic patients, only religion and the period of disease were statistically significant differents, but the relationships between the sexual satisfaction and the period of disease showed a significant inverse correlation. This results showed that the degree of sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients was relatively high. The major factors associated with sexual satisfaction were spouses' support, body image and sexual act, religion and the period of disease. So, the above factors have to be considered during the nursing intervention on diabetic patients' sexual life.

The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 66~80
With the opening of healthcare market, the health care environment in Korea is anticipating a drastic change. In this Internationally open market environment, it is necessary to introduce a systematic health care plan and DRG system which offer qualitative medical services as well as reduced cost. Purpose of this study is to develop and test the critical pathway for Cesarean section patient in the way to be possible the integrated inpatient management. It was adopted the process of six phases to develop the critical pathway as the theoretical framework implemented by Johns Hopkins Hospital, Maryland, U.S.A. In the first phase, make a selection of diagnosis/procedures to develop. In the second phase, organize a development team consisted of eight expertises working in maternity nursing area. In the third phase, analyze the overall medical service offered to patient through review medical records and decided the service content and the implementation period for the Cesarean section patient. In the forth phase, make out a preliminary critical pathway after verification of expert group on content validity. In the fifth phase, validity operate to ten Cesarean section patients to test implementation in practice by using the preliminary critical pathway, In the sixth phase, defined the final critical pathway. The result of this study was as follows. 1. There were classified 8 categories as monitoring/assesment, treatment, medication, activity, diet, test, consult, education/discharge plan for vertical axis and showed hospital stayed from admission to discharge for horizontal axis of critical pathway through analysis 68 Cesarean section patients medical records. 2. After critical review 68 medical records to make out a preliminary critical pathway, hospital stays for horizontal axis were showed 6 days, mean hospital stays were 7.5 days, 2.1 days were to be taken operation after admission and 4.2 days were stayed until discharge after operation. 3. After making out a questionare in 90 items of a medical service content of eight categories and verifying the content validity of expertises, the 85 items of the preliminary critical pathway were selected by expertises agreement over 88% and modified or deleted 5 items showing agreement below 75%. 4. After verifying a validity to 10 patients for 4 weeks, hospital stays were 5.9 days. There were deleted 1 item and modified or supplemented the 9 items of the 10 items.

Kim Hyun-Mi ; Jang Gun-Ja ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 81~94
This study was designed and undertaken to identify the degree of burden and quality of life in family caregivers of patients with stroke and to determine whether burden was directly related to quality of life. The data were collected from October 3rd, 1997 to March 20th, 1998. The subjects in this study were 126 caregivers as a family member and 126 patients with stroke who were hospitalized in two oriental medicine hospitals, three general hospitals located in Taegue City and Pusan City. The questionnaires consisted of questions regarding burden(25 items) and quality of life (18 items) of caregivers. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, 1-test, ANOVA and Pearson-correlation coefficients done with the SPSS program. The results of thi study are as follows : 1. The score for family caregiver's burden was higher than the middle score. 2. The score for family caregiver's quality of life was relatively low. 3. The relationship between burden and quality of life was showed a significant inverse correlation. 4. The family caregivers' age had statistically significant differences in the degree of burden. 5. The education and monthly income of caregivers had statistically significant differences in the quality of life. That is, the higher the level of education and the higher the monthly income, the higher the degree of quality of life. 6. The age and sex of patients had affected the qualiry of life of caregivers sigmificantly. That is, caregivers felt more burden when caring for the patient group in sexties than any other age group and female patients than for male patients. 7. In the relationships between quality of life and general characteristics of the stroke patients, only the patients' sex was showed a statistically significant difference. That is, caregivers felt more quality of life when taring for male patients than female patients.

The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 95~106
This study aims to provide a better nursing service in the dimension of economizing time and human efforts. This is to present some basic knowledge necessary to improving a nursing quality in measuring body temperature by analyzing the contents that the objects experienced at the time of measure with tympanic thermometer and mercury thermometer Subjects of the survey consisted of 71 college students, 47 adult patients and 40 pediatric patients. The results were as follows : 1. The oral temperature by mercury thermometer and tympanic thermometer with oral mode was :
by mercury thermometer and
by tympanic thermometer in college students : it showed an significant difference statistically. 2. Comparsion between oral mode and rectal mode by tympanic thermometer in college students :
by oral mode and
by rectal mode and this defference was significant statistically 3. Comparision between rectal temperature by mercury thermometer and rectal mode of tympanic thermometer :
by mercury thermometer and
by tympanic thermometer, it showed a significant difference statistically. 4. Comparision between oral temperature by mercury thermometer and oral mode of tympanic thermometer of the pediatric patients :
by mercury temperature and
by tympanic thermometer, it showed a significant difference statistically. 5. Comparision between oral body temperature by mercury thermometer and oral mode of tympanic thermometer of the adult patients :
by mercury thermometer and
by tympanic thermometer, it did not show statistically any difference. 6. At the measure by mercury thermometer this data can classified In three main categorise : their feeling to a thermometer, thermometer itself and aspect physical of the clients. It is considered that an subjective experience to tympanic thermometer was more positive.
A Study about the Human Communication of the Oriental Medicine Nurse-Patient : 'Ritual Communication'
Jun Myung-Hee ;
The Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education, volume 4, issue 1, 1998, Pages 107~119
This study tried to answer the question : 'How does the human communication happen at the oriental medicine hospital between nurse and patient?' To answer that, a micro-ethnographic research method was used. Researcher visited T university hospital of oriental medicine and observed nurse-patient communication from September 1997 to December 1997. The data was obtained through participant observation, interview, audio-tape recording, home video camera, field note-taking, and related documents. After reviewing the whole data and deliberate analysis, first, I learned that most oriental medicine nurses communicate with their patients for their routine nursing job like recording, hand-over to the next duty, report to doctor, etc. I named this type of communication as 'ritual communication'. Second, I can define major argument as follow : Human communication of oriental medicine between nurse and patient is performed more frequently and variously when nurse contacts the patient for the routine nursing activities than for the incidental activities. As a result of these understandings, I suggest that oriental nursing need to develop the body of knowledge and expand its role and independent nursing activity. Also the bureaucratic hospital management centered doctors must be changed reasonalbly.
