An Application of MDS(Multidimensional Scaling) Methods to the Study of Furniture Usage and Behavior in the Living Room

A study of domestic furniture arrangements may reveal the living style relevant to the room as conceived and coded by occupants and the effects of the physical environment on the structure of behavior settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through analizing the furniture usage and behavior as a non-reactive and activity oriented behavioral measures, the occupants` domestic habits as a living style using MDS. MDS(multidimensional scaling technique) is a statistical technique for creating a spatial representation of data. It Is a particularly appropriate technique for analizing qualitative data such as the furniture usage and behavior because it takes into account all of the relationships between items. For the MDS analysis, the furniture usage and behavior examined by housing types based on 114 households in Seoul. The result of spatial configuration by MDS has three dimensions : recogn;lion of room function, pattern of room organization, understanding of room meaning. The effect of housing types for dimensions is identical but configuration of furniture items is different.
A Study on the Effect of the Residential Environment on the Scholastic Attainment - A Case of Middle School Students -

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the residential environment on the scholastic attainment of middle school students and present the direction of better residential environment for mental faculties. A questionnaire was distributed to 537 middle school students and SAS Package was used. The results of this study were as follows.1. The scholastic attainment was significantly good when the number of family was four and it improved as the level of parents` occupation, parents` school career and household income got higher.2. As the distance to the facilities from the house got nearer, the level of arrangement in the house got higher, the degree of concern of parents on the education got higher and the scale of the house got lager, the scholatic attainment of middle school students become better significantly.3. The residential environment had an Independent effect on the scholastic attainment of middle school students.
A Case Study on the Experience of Housing Environment - In the case of Middle class Apartment Residents -

The purpose of this study was to investigate the middle-class housewives` experience of housing environment through their own cognitive expressions. Subjects were 18 housewives living in the apartments at Junggye-Dong, Seoul and Field survey method was used. Indepth interview technique with planned questionnaire was used. The contents of individual`s housing life history were recorded by means of a recording machine. Cognitive expressions of subjects ontheir experience of housing environment were analiyzed by Content Analysis. Subjects have respectively experienced various housing types. The housing experiences were classified by stimuli and respones. Stimuli were again classified by the factors and characteristics of housing environment, whereas responses were classified by types and directions. Negative experiences were more frequent than positive ones. Negative evaluations were appeared more frequently In such case as the existence of community facilities, interior structure, bathrooms, and heating systems. The positive emotional experiences appeared more frequently were the natural characteristic$ of outdoors. When all the contents were analyzed by housing types experienced, subjects negatively remembered community facilities in high-rise apartments, and positively outdoors in detached single houses including traditional houses, and negatively heating systems in low-rise apartments and tenement houses. These contents, especially positive and negative aspects of past experience. can be used as basic data to understand residents` reponses and to plan furture houses more desirable for them.
A Study on Residents' Trade-Off Preference for Interior Environmental Attributes of Multi-Family Housing

This study is a case study to grasp residents` trade-off preference and opinions for selected interior environmental attributes of muilti-family housing. Interiew with structured questionnaire was carried out through pilot and main survey. On the basis of the result of pilot survey, interior environmental attributes for the main survey were selected. Selected attributes were the size of each residential room, the degree of openness between two rooms and interior facilities. Among them, trade-off approach was applied to the size of each residential room and interior facilities. For the main survey. 45 housewives living in 31 pyung apartment of a selected construction company to grasp the residents` trade-off preference and opinions on the selected attributes. In terms of the size of each room, subjects wanted the room to be lager, whereas master bedroom smaller, and family bathroom larger, wheareas toilet near master bedroom smaller. In terms of the degree of openness between two rooms, the present degree of openness between private and service area such as living room and balcony, and second bedroom and adjacent balcony need to be more open, whereas the present degree of openness between living room and dining room and between living room and kitchen need to be more closed. The comparative orders of important intems were the ventilation facility in the bathroom, drying poles for clothes in the balcony, interior landscape, and workable for hand washing clothes. In conclusion, measurement of preference using trade-off approach about selected interior environmental attributes in post-occupancy evaluation was regarded as a promising evaluation method to grasp the practical and comparative preference under constraints comparing to the typical existing methods.
Research on Housing History of Multi-Discipline

This study aims to analyze the reserch result about housing history of multi-disciplines especially archeology, cultural anthropology, folklore, geography, archtecture and dwelling science. Each discipline has acted an important role to develop the research on housing history, even though they have some limitations. They usually failed in clarfying the relationship among physical housing, habitants and social environment. In order to overcome these limitations, this study suggests microsociological approach, so called "Housing Adjustment Model".del".uot;.

A Study of the Luminous Environment according to the Direction of Classrooms and Response of the Students

The purpose of this study is to make use of the results, which have been obtained by field survey on the physical elements of daylight enviorment and by research on the subjective response of the students in classrooms, as fundamental data to improve the learning circumstances of classroom. This field survey was made for the students who are doing visual activities most of their time in a classroom formed by luminous environment. Two classrooms of H` Middle School are selected for this study. One is facing the south and the other is facing the east, The classfoom facing the southe was superior in daylight factor and illuminance, while both classrooms were poor in equality. Three factors(brightness, spaciousness, and glare) were drawn in the whole indoor visual environment and two factors(uniformity and reflection) were drawn in the warking plane environment.
