A Study on the Reality and Natural Symbols in the Wright's Houses
Jo Seung-Koo ;
Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 1~10
In the resultant period of architectural transition and a tendency towards unthinking formalism, it is all the more important for designers to question the meaning of their actions and their role in society. Modern architects were convinced that their visions were reality, their ideas truth. Yet this assumption is was the fundamental issue, for what reality and how is it perceived? Harries argues a rediscovery of a language of natural symbols, which might help create buildings that are experienced as necessary rather than arbitrary. These symbols are said to express the essential patterns of human existence in the world. In the Frank Lloyd Wright's works, the uniqueness of his architecture lies in its expression and interpretation of nature and people's existence in the world. This study is intended to be an investigation of the nature of physical expression and perception of the reality known, and to seek to present Wright's philosophy of house design in relation to nature and non-arbitrary architecture. Finally this paper concludes that the architectural expression of expressions of Wright's houses are timeless and full of lift, and these built qualities are necessary and could not readily be otherwise.

Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 11~18
For the more comfortable thermal environment in residential buildings, it was necessary for variable components like as automatic flow limiting valves and/or balancing valves in hydronic system. And, these components had an effect on flow-rate and pressure inside pipe. In this case, the incompatibility between the design for the heating system and the selection of equipment was the causes of several problems in heating pipe network. In this study, we peformed measurements and analyses of flow rate and pressure inside pipe for radiant floor heating in residential buildings through field surveys and experiments in order to find out the actual conditions and problems. On the basis of this, we suggested the approach for the optimal flow-rate and pressure maintaining inside pipe in individual heating system.

Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 47~54
The purpose of this study is to investigate residential characters and consciousness about housing environment concerned with earth housing, and to suggest basic data reflectible on the planning of earth housing. Residential characters and consciousness are investigated with the people lived in forty seven earth housings located in nationwide scale through interviews and questionnaire. As a result, it is shown that a reason of health like sick house syndrome, residential environments such as ventilation and lighting, site environment such as neighbor and greenfield are very influential elements to the consciousness of inhabitants. Meanwhile, approximation of residential area, the connection with public facilities including medical service, educational and commercial conditions, additionally, preparation of disaster and crime prevention in a viewpoint of safety are pointed out as relatively weak ones. It means that earth housing is not systematically fixed as a residential site because it is personally progressed by small number of peoples having different reasons. For the improvement of systematic housing environment, development and proposition of various model are needed on earth housing and its site.

The interior gardens are mostly accessed from the living rooms, dining rooms and corridors respectively. 4) For the terraces which are located in the 1st floor, they are mostly accessed from the living rooms. : 5) For the balconies which are located in the 2nd floor, they are mostly accessed from the bedrooms.; 6) For the location of the entrances, they are mostly located in the front side of the buildings and mostly facing south.
Dichotomous View on Seoul Residential Areas presented in Park, Wan-So's Literary Works
Park Cheol-Soo ;
Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 63~75
The exploration of the spatial structure of a particular urban area, or the analysis of the tendencies of spatial consumption among urbanites, can be a literary-geographical attitude, shifting literary interests toward geography. It may also constitute a field of cultural geography that reads texts as cultural symbols. Based on this kind of attitude, the paper reads the literature of Park Wan So, particularly the popular novels that involve urban and residential spaces of Seoul, as a cultural text that carries a kind of symbolism. It proceeds with the idea that most popular novels reflect the mass phenomena of its times, and that representing real cultural experiences through text, it becomes a means of generalizing the identity shared by the anonymous masses and the characteristics of particular places. Hence the individuality of Park Wan So, who moved to Seoul during the Japanese colonial period and hence forth lived as a middle-class citizen, is inseparable from her literary work. With this attitude and methodology, the paper argues that in the urban space of metropolitan Seoul, the modern ambivalent gaze of the colonial period shifted toward increasingly new value systems, and was replaced by a dichotomous view, and furthermore, that the contents of this dichotomous view has experienced a multivalent transformation through the accumulation of time and the expansion of space.

Hyun Taek-Soo ; Lee Byung-Tae ;
Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 77~85
This study aims to propose the comprehensive evaluation of performance multi-family housing. Most of the existing studies for the reproduction have evaluated by the safety of structure. Therefore those pass over the functional factors which is important for the evaluation of residential qualities. This study represents that the reproduction renovation should not be secured the safety of structure but established the quality of lift. And questionnaire asking expert's opinion also supplemented. As a result, the item for examination and the weight for evaluation are suggested in functional deterioration. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Existent redevelopment criteria are not appropriate to decide the environmental comfort, the vital function of housing and the residential management finance. 2. The future criteria have to evaluate the existing environmental comfort, be reconstructed to put first general deterioration. 3. Evaluation elements was extracted throughout the document research, evaluation elements analysis system was separated in residential area, suburb of dwellings, community, and housing complexity environmental assesment, 4. Each category of influence ratio was extracted to assess total deterioration throughout the expert question survey. 5. Each category analysed (1)
: function is good (unnecessary to improve) (2)
: average (necessary of partial improvement) (3)
: bad (necessary of total improvement) (4)
: the worst (unable to improve throughout the repair)

Change of Social Aspect Resulting from the Physical Changes of the Urban Traditional Housing
Lee Seung-Yeob ;
Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 117~124
Korean urban traditional housing abandoned by the social apathy promptly disappearing form our sight, or ruining. It tells that the strategies we are using today are impossible to fulfill socio-economic needs of residents here. So it needed to find out the strategies which can change this place better to live in. Consolidating the street parking lots fer cars can be one of the important solutions to the area. By using cul-de-sac, after setting up small unit of communities, we will have chance to have a small public space, and at the same time it can help to set up our tradition of people's intimacy inside the community. Most people have their own cars, and the need of parking lots becomes more serious. So, a meeting place like public well in the past must replace parking lots. On the other hand, it is important to re-consolidate existing land to obtain appropriate land size for other uses. Today, the use of private space (house, private lots, etc..)and public space(streets, local offices) is very important. NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) attitude should also be reconsidered. All these negative social aspects come from negative social relationship, thus we should consider them with care and deep understandings. The traditional housing of Korea should not be abandoned as slum, but this should be transformed in terms of the conservation since it is superior in its ecological and energy conservation aspect.

Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 125~134
The tightness of windows have devoted to the improvement of thermal insulation and energy saving in buildings. But it is known that this tightness causes some side effects such as low ventilation, low capacity to humidity and temperature control and these are not profitable for inhabitants. To act on these side effects, Korean traditional windows which are composed of Han-Ji(Koreand traditional paper) and Chang-Sal(Korean traditional wooden frame) have been studied to get a reasonable solutions for these problems. In this study, to compare the thermal and humidity control performance of current window(12 mm pair) and Korean traditional windows, frames which are made of existing window and Korean traditional windows are adapted to scale model house and then humidity and temperature of in and out of scale model house are measured and analysed. The results of this study are followings ; 1) When Korean traditional window charges 20cm(1/8 of total window area) from total window area, Han-Ji window has higher thermal insulation than that of existing window in daytime. There is the most big thermal difference when double faced with double-ply Han-Ji window is placed to mock-up house. In night-time, the temperature difference is very small so this means that Korean traditional window is good to cover direct sunlight in daytime and reduce the temperature of balcony. One faced with one-ply han-Ji window has the best humidity penetration performance among three type of Korean traditional windows. 2) When Korean window area enlarged to 40cm(1/4 of total window area), the function of 40cm width Han-Ji window is higher than that of 20cm's. This means that enlargement of Han-Ji window cover direct sunlight more and is more efficient in humidity penetration.

Journal of the Korean housing association, volume 17, issue 2, 2006, Pages 135~142
The purpose of this study is to obtain the fire safety for underground commercial space with analysing fire loads and ventilation factors. It was adopted the investigation method of field survey with commercial uses for more confidential data. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) The ventilation factor shows
and it may develop ventilation-controlled fires which have much fire hazard more than fuel-controlled fires. 2) The highest value of fire load is
and appeared in footwear shop which has the value
for unfixed combustibles and
for fixed combustibles. 3) The average value of burning rates which mean the velocity of fire development and the fire damage range is 0.143. Therefore it is desired to decrease the combustibles of compartment and is needed the method of dispersion arrangement of goods and storage to steel cabinet and so on.
