A Study on the Grinding Characteristics for Various Grinding Wheels in the Cylindrical Grinding

This paper reports some experimental results of cylindrical external grinding using CBN wheels. Many experimental studies for surface grinding have been done, but not for the cylindrical grinding due to the difficulty of grinding force measurement. In this paper a new experimental device has been proposed for the grinding force measurement in cylindrical grinding. The cylindrical grinding experiments were carried out at various grinding conditions with several CBN grinding wheels. The experimental results indicate that the CBN wheels with smaller grains result in the higher grinding forces in both SCM415 and STD11 workpieces. The grinding forces of all wheels were proportional to the infeed speeds and the difference of each wheels was prominent at high infeed speed for SCM415.
Development of Aluminium Alloy for Piston of Air Compressor

It is important not only to reduce the casting defects of piston but also to improvement in the mechanical properties(hardness) of piston for the air compressor. The blow hole is typical casting defects in the conventional cast of aluminium alloy(AC8A-T6) piston. Because of the heat treatment method, mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy for piston was decided on the heat treatment method and cycle. Therefore, we tested on the development of mechanical properties and on the casting defects of piston for the air compressor in accordance with the heat treatment and casting condition. After the heat treatment and casting was carried out as several times, and was compared with the imported piston. As a result of several investigations; microstructure, hardness and casting defects of piston was changed under the influence of the heat treatment and casting method. When the cooling rate was controlled and the uni-cast method used, it bas the same mechanical properties and microstructure.
Structure Optimization for a Lower Control Arm Using Sensitivity Analysis

Recently developed automotive components are of lightweight nature, providing automobiles with a high fuel efficiency and performance. In response to those trends of car developments, this study proposes a structural optimization method for the lower control ann. Lightweight design of lower control am can be achieved through two approaches: design and material technology. In this research, the former includes optimization technology, and the latter the technologies for selecting aluminum as a steel-substitute material. In this research, the design of experiments(DOE) built in ANSYS WORKBENCH are utilized to determine the optimum shape of a Lower Control Arm. And optimum design is compared first model and reduced design variable model that considered sensitivity using orthogonal array.
Robust Design Using Operating Window

The operating window method is a novel approach in quality improvement. But it has not received deserved attention in academic research. If a critical factor for competing failure modes can be identified, the probability of failure can be reduced by widening the operating window of this factor. Traditional SN ratio for the operating window advocated by Taguchi has a critical shortcoming, which has been derived under the assumption that failure rates are determined by the operating window factor only. A new metric for robustness is given for the operating window method, which has relaxed the restrictive assumption of Taguchi's SN ratio. And procedures for determining optimal conditions based on the new metric is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed approach over the traditional practice is tested with the aid of a wave soldering process.
Development of precision-stage for the millimeter dynamic range by using the PZT actuato

This paper presents a new precision stage by using the PZT actuator and stepping motor. The stage have the precision positioning mechanism that has been developed for generation displacements with nanometer accuracy and a millimeter dynamic range simulatneously. The stage is composed not of the mechanical elastic hinge but of the clamp, and only one PZT actuator. The displacement of stage is acquired by the control of the two clamp between the PZT actuator. The results of the FEM analysis in the contact pali of the clamp and basic properties of the positioning system are also presented. Using the new stage proposed in this paper.

Precision Profile Measurement on Roughly Processed Surfaces

We present a 3-D profiler specially devised for the profile measurement of rough surfaces that are difficult to be measured with conventional non-contact interferometer. The profiler comprises multiple two-point-diffraction sources made of single-mode optical fibers. Test measurement proves that the proposed profiler is well suited for the warpage inspection of microelectronics components with rough surface, such as unpolished backsides of silicon wafers and plastic molds of integrated-circuit chip package.
Minimization of Warpage in Injection-molded Parts By Optimal Design of U-type Ribs

In this research, the layout and geometry of U-type ribs in the part, including significant process conditions, are automatically optimized to reduce pan warpage with robustness in consideration. The optimization procedure are based on an iterative redesign methodology integrated with computer aided injection molding simulation, Taguchi's Design of Experiment(DOE), and a direct search-based optimization method. The robustness of a design alternative is efficiently measured by introducing composite noise factor and Taguchi's signal-to-noise ratio. As a solution search methodology, the modified design space reduction method based on orthogonal arrays is employed to exploit an optimal robust design alternative. To illustrate the proposed methodology, a case study is performed on simulation results, where an optimal robust design alternative is obtained with a moderate number of iterations.
A Study on the Measurement of Plastic Zone Depth using TRIZ

Machine parts subjected to fluctuating or cyclic loads induce repeated stresses that often result in failure by fatigue. In such cases, the fatigue failures unfortunately sometimes occur. These may arise from a lack of knowledge with regard to the design, fabrication and operation of the machines or structures. The failure analysis provides valuable information regarding the prevention of similar failures. Furthermore, this information will be useful to improve or to develop new products. Failure stress analysis is classified into X-ray fractography. X-ray fractography has the limited applications because of material crystal size, difficult measurement method, electrolytic polishing precision, and long test time. Therefore, this study proposed the new method to improve the measurement precision of plastic zone depth and test time using TRIZ.
Comparative Study on Effect of the Surface Characteristics of the SKH51 and SKD11 Steels with Deposition Times by AIP-TiN Coating

In this paper, the surface characteristics of the AIP-TiN coated of the SKH51 and SKD11 steels under various deposition times are presented with emphasis on the comparison of the two materials. The micro-particle, the surface roughness, the micro-hardness, the coated layer thickness, the atomic distribution of Ti, N and Fe elements and the adhesion are measured for various deposition times. It has been shown that the micro-particle, the surface roughness, the coated layer thickness and the atomic distribution of Ti, N and Fe elements are similar for the two cases regardless of the test deposition time from 10 to 180 minutes. However, it has been shown that the micro-hardness and the adhesion of the SKH51 steel are higher than the SKD11 steel, indicating that they are much affected by the hardness of the material to be coated.
Development of Precision Moving Instrument by Using the Uni-morph type PZT Actuator

This paper presents a new precision moving instrument for the displacement and direction control using the uni-morph type PZT actuator. The instrument is composed of the two-body and a link. The body has the uni-morph type PZT actuator, which make the vibration. Movement of simple moving instrument is generally analyzed by the theory of center-of-gravity moment. However the analysis of the instrument in this paper is focused the resonance of instrument. Resonance of the body is originated a uni-morph type PZT actuator that is vibrated by voltage and frequency. The basic performances of one body instrument are analyzed by the FEM analysis. And experiments are also performed to confirm the linear movement of the instrument and direction control. it is proper a voltage control than a frequency control for the direction changing. And Moving velocity is 0.032m/s.
