Sharp Edge Tool Alignment for Micro Pattern Machining
Park, Soon-Sub ; Won, Jong-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 1~6
This paper presents a geometrical error compensation of tool alignment for sharp edge bite on B axis controlled machine. In precision micro patterning, bite alignment is crucial parameter for machined surface. To decrease bite alignment error, plus tilted bite from B axis center is touched to reference work piece(pin gauge) and checked the deviation from original position. Same process is repeated for maximum touch deviation value. From this touched position value, wheel alignment error in X axis and Z axis can be calculated on B axis center. Experimental results show that this compensation method is efficient to correct sharp edge bite alignment.

Sim, Han-Sub ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 13~20
Development of a dynamic engine model is essential to predict and analyze of dynamic characteristics from a natural gas engine. Reducing the harmful exhaust emissions can be accomplished by a precise air-fuel ratio control. In this paper, the dynamic engine model was proposed and included mixture formation and intake process because the dynamic characteristics can be affected by the mixture components such as an air and a gaseous fuel. The air mass flow, the partial pressure ratio, and the gas constant are changed by variations of the components in the mixture formation and intake process. The dynamic engine model is applied to the natural gas engine for validation test. Experimental results show that the dynamic engine model is effective to predict the dynamic characteristics of the natural gas engine.
Analysis of Bulk Metal Forming Process by Reproducing Kernel Particle Method
Han, Kyu-Taek ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 21~26
The finite element analysis of metal forming processes often fails because of severe mesh distortion at large deformation. As the concept of meshless methods, only nodal point data are used for modeling and solving. As the main feature of these methods, the domain of the problem is represented by a set of nodes, and a finite element mesh is unnecessary. This computational methods reduces time-consuming model generation and refinement effort. It provides a higher rate of convergence than the conventional finite element methods. The displacement shape functions are constructed by the reproducing kernel approximation that satisfies consistency conditions. In this research, A meshless method approach based on the reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is applied with metal forming analysis. Numerical examples are analyzed to verify the performance of meshless method for metal forming analysis.

Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 27~32
In this study, static and dynamic stability estimations on the diecutter with finite element modelling were carried out to be creased and cut away printed sheet exactly. To cut away the sheet exactly, the large force should be pressured on diecutter. And which affects not only the quality of produced sheets but also the stability of diecutter. The analyses with and without the tare of diecutter were carried out with NASTRAN software on applying 400 ton force to its top and moving table respectively. It was known that maximum von-Mises stress of 221 Mpa in diecutter was occurred at the toggle, and it was smaller than the yield stress of 280 Mpa. And maximum deformation of 0.75 mm was occurred at the top table. The natural frequencies of 41, 102, 108, 115, and 134 Hz for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th mode, which had been determined by numerical simulation, were not coincided with the max. speeds of motor and moving table of 29 and 2 Hz. And which was verified by vibration test. Therefore it may be estimated that the structure of the diecutter is statically and dynamically stable.

Cho, Jae-Ung ; Han, Moon-Sik ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 33~37
Manifold could apply stainless steel with light weight and durability to improve fuel efficiency at automotive industry. This study is analyzed and compared by heat transfer and deformation according to the materials of cast iron and stainless steel. The heat transfer at manifold of cast iron at the distribution of heat temperature is more than that of stainless steel. But the value of maximum heat deformation in case of stainless steel is 1.5 times as great as that in case of cast iron. The value of maximum heat equivalent stress in case of stainless steel is 2.7 times as great as that in case of cast iron. This maximum stress at manifold is shown at the part assembled with engine body.

Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 38~45
Recently, LCD Backlight Unit is being replaced from cold cathode fluorescent lamp(CCFL) to external electrode fluorescent lamp(EEFL) because the EEFL has high energy efficiency and long life. Also, it can reduce energy consumption and weight. So far, external electrode ring for EEFL is produced by sheet metal press forming process. Therefore it had low precision and much material loss. To solve these problems, Multi-Forming process that has five step forming process was invented. However, low productivity is another barrier. Product speed that is controlled by the rotational speed cannot be increased due to the unsatisfied design specification. The reason is that the gap between rolled two edge parts of the sheet plate is tightly inspected. Regarding this factor, the understanding of forming behavior to each process is inevitable. This paper describes the CAE analysis of the multi-forming process by PAM-STAMP.

Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 46~53
To find the working condition is one of the important factors in precision machining. In this study, we analyzed maximum working temperature by infra-red camera and surface roughness in side wall end milling using design of experiment (DOE): RSM(response surface methodology), ANOM(analysis of means) and ANOVA(analysis of variance) by table of orthogonal array. ANOM and ANOVA are well adapted to select sensitivity of design variables for maximum working temperature and surface roughness. The effective design variables and their levels should be determined using ANOM, ANOVA. RSM is presented 2nd order approximation polynomial of maximum working temperature and surface roughness is composed with design variables. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed procedure using design of experiment : table of orthogonal array, ANOM, ANOVA and RSM can be easily utilized to solve the problem of working condition.

Characteristics of Pt thin films on WC for glass lens molding
Park, Soon-Sub ; Lee, Ki-Yung ; Won, Jong-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 62~67
Pt thin films on Cr or Ti interlayer were deposited onto a tungsten carbide(WC) substrate by the ion beam assisted DC magnetron sputtering. The various atomic percent of Cr and Ti underneath of the Pt films were prepared to examine the total thin film characteristics. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using the SEM, XRD and AFM. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of Pt thin film also were examined. The interlayer of pure Ti was formed with 40 nm thickness while that of pure Cr was done with 50 nm as standard reference. The growth rate of either Cr or Ti thin film was almost same under the same deposition conditions. The SEM images showed that anisotropic grain of Pt thin films consisting of dense columnar structures irrespectively grew from the different target compositions. The values of hardness and adhesion strength of Cr/Pt thin film coated on a WC substrate were higher than those of Ti/Pt thin film.

Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 74~81
At present, industries and researchers are looking for ways to reduce the use of lubricants because of ecological and economical reasons. Therefore, metal cutting is to move toward dry cutting or semi-dry cutting. One of the technologies is known as MQL machining. This paper presents an investigation into MQL machining with the objective of evaluating cylindricity and cooling effect for the turning process of SM45C. To reach this goal, cylindrical-outer-diameter turning experiments are carried out according to cutting conditions with fluid, MQL and dry machining methods. A cutting force, tool-shank temperature and cylindricity of workpiece are measured and analyzed. The correlation between cutting conditions and cylindricity are evaluated according to cooling lubricant environments.

Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 90~97
In the study, a design methodology for robust minimization of a warpage in injection-molded part is presented. Taguchi's parameter design method is integrated with a computer simulation tool for injection molding to search for best design with robustness against the process variability by noises. The proposed methodology is based on a two-stage process: (1) reducing a warpage in the part by optimizing the part geometry including the layout and size of ribs, and (2) additionally minimizing the warpage by optimizing process conditions. An example is used to illustrate the usefulness of the design methodology.

Chun, Se-Ho ; Ko, Tae-Jo ;
Journal of the Korean Society of Manufacturing Process Engineers, volume 8, issue 3, 2009, Pages 98~104
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of factors on the dynamic stiffness variation of boring bar. The experiment was carried out by Taguchi Method and Orthogonal array table. The results indicate that overhang was found out to be dominant factor with 95% confident intervals and feed rate and depth of cut were insignificant. In addition, analysis of loss function shows that loss value increased sharply from 3D to 4D(D is a shank diameter). Consequently, there is critical point which changes property of dynamic stiffness.
