Kinetics of Non-Catalytic Fluid-Solid Reactions in Chemical and Extractive Metallurgical Processes: Part I. Reaction of a Single Nonporous Particle
Son, Hong-Yong ;
Korean Chemical Engineering Research, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 3~3
Abstract
Recent developments in the theory of the kinetics of non-catalytic fluid-solid reactions are reviewed. Until recently, the treatments of this important group of reactions have been in an embryonic stage. In the last few years, however, significant progresses have been made in various aspects of fluid-solid reactions. In Part I, the reaction of an initially nonporous solid will be reviewed. Part II will discuss the reaction of an initially porous solid, and the reactions between two solids proceeding through gaseous intermediates will be described in Part III. Finally, the treatment of industrially important multiparticle systems will be presented in Part IV.

Kim, Sung-Chul ;
Korean Chemical Engineering Research, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 17~17
Abstract
The interpenetration of polymer networks (IPN's) is a new way of combining different polymer systems. The synthesis and properties of IPN's have been actively studied in recent years. A review on the synthesis, morphology, physical and mechanical properties of IPN's is presented in this paper.

Adsorptian Characteristics of Carbon Monoxide on Zeolites Type CuHY and CuNaY
Nam, In-Sik ; Ha, Baik-Hyon ;
Korean Chemical Engineering Research, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 25~25
Abstract
Adsorption isotherms were determined at
for carbon monoxide on type CuHY and type CuNaY zeolites which have various cupric ion contents. Adsorption of carbon monoxide on NaY and HY obeyed the Henry's law at low pressures. As the sodium ions on NaY and the protons on HY were replaced by the cupric ions, the adsorption characteristics were changed to follow Freundlich equation at relatively lower level of cupric ion exchange. In case when the cupric ion exchange level increased further, the Freundlich plot showed two or three distinct segments of linear nature with different slopes. In view of cremer's explanation method and Freundlich equation for adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces, it may be concluded that, at higher level of cupric ion exchange, cupric ion can be exchanged even in the supercage on HY while it cannot on NaY and that the cupric ion exchanged in sodalite unit appears to have influences on the adsorption of carbon monoxide in supercage for CuNaY and CuHY. The influence was more pronounced for CuHY than for CuNaY.

Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide on Zeolites Type CuHY and CuNaY
Nam, In-Sik ; Ha, Baik-Hyon ;
Korean Chemical Engineering Research, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 31~31
Abstract
Catalytic oxidation activities of carbon monoxide on faujasite zeolite, CuHY and CuNaY, were measured by controlling cupric ion exchange level in the zeolite. A significant increase in the oxidation activity was observed to occur at 42% cupric ion exchange level on CuHY, but this was not the case with CuNaY. Nevertheless, in the latter kinetics, there appeared a minimum oxidation activity at the same ion exchange level when temperature was raised up to
. In the cupric ion exchange level below 42% and the temperature range lower than
the activation energy of the kinetics on CuHY and CuNaY showed 6 and 20 Kcal/mole respectively. However, as the cupric ion exchange level increased beyond 42% such a distinguishable difference in activation energy between two solids disappeared giving the value of 12 Kcal/mole. It is probably due to only the effect of cupric ion under these circumstances. In the temperature range higher than
the activation energy on CuHY could not be measured due to complete conversion of reactants but on CuNaY revealed the same value of 20 Kcal/mole as that observed in the lower temperature range, independent of the cupric ion exchange level. This implies that the influence of sodium ion became prevaillng over the cupric ion.

Freeze-drying of Coffee Extracts
Choi, Ung ; Kang, Heon-Shig ;
Korean Chemical Engineering Research, volume 14, issue 1, 1997, Pages 37~37
Abstract
An experimental investigation of freeze-drying of coffee extract is presented. Effects of freezing rate, concentration and pressure on the drying rate are determined and the results compared with a theoretical model, which expresses the drying rate in terms of the effective diffusivity of the material. The effective diffusivity of the coffee extract was found to be in the range of
for slush freezing,
for slow freezing, and
for fast freezing. The mechanism of water vapor transport appeared to be mainly the bulk diffusion in the slow or slush freezing, and the Knudsen diffusion in the fast freezing.
