Free-wing Tilt-body Aircraft Controllerability Analysis for Change of Center of Gravity

The free-wing tilt-body aircraft is researched in the flight performance characteristics for center of gravity (CG) change. All of speed, body tilt angle and center of gravity change are simulated to determine the flight envelope by a non-linear 3-DOF mathematical model. In flight, this aircraft configuration changes by the tiltable empennage. Then, flight dynamics distinguishes from those of a conventional fixed-wing aircraft. Though flight performance and trimmability are studied by CG change, the flight model of free-wing tilt-body aircraft is to reduce the hidden risk and to achieve the successful flight test. It is analyzed the flight characteristics by CG change that distinguishes free-wing tilt-body aircraft from the conventional aircraft.
QZSS L5 Signal Processing Results in Korea

Launch of the first Quasi-Zentih Satellite System (QZSS) satellite, dubbed Michibiki, took place September 11, 2010 and technical and application verification of the satellite is being carried out. This paper presents the results obtained from processing of the L5 signal transmitted from the QZSS satellite. The QZSS L5 signal is collected in ETRI, Korea. And then, the acquisition and tracking are performed by the L5 software receiver implemented by ETRI. The tracking loop of FLL, PLL, and DLL, the EPL correlator output, and the C/No output results show that the QZSS L5 signal is normally processed. Finally, the paper demonstrates that the QZSS L5 signal could be used as GPS satellite based augmentation system in Korea as well as Japan.
A analysis on the mechanical joint of composite laminate

This paper gives a review of finite element model for the analysis of fastening as practical points of view. Different mechanical properties of plate-fastener systems are analyzed. Calculations of the system properties are described as well as the technique of their application in model. Analysis has been performed for calculating the load distribution in multi-joint and the results are compared using the several models. The effects of fastener-hole clearance on the load distribution in multifastener joints are presented. And the stress analysis method have been reviewed for failure analysis of mechanical joint of composite laminate.
Fault Detection System by the Extracting the ROM's Data

Generally, the digital circuit card can be tested by automatic test equipment using LASAR(Logic Automated Stimulus and Response). This paper proposes the ROM data extracting algorithm which can test the digital circuit card that consists usually ROMs. We are implemented of the proposed fault detecting program by LabWindow/CVI 8.5 and the digital automatic test instrument with NI-VXI(National Instrument - Versa Bus Modular Europe eXtentions for Instrumentation) card. We also make an interface circuit board connecting the digital test instrument and the digital circuit card. It shows the good performance of getting the data from ROMs.
Conceptual Study of a Low-Speed Wind Tunnel for Performance Test of Wind Turbine

Conceptual study of an open-circuit type low-speed wind tunnel for performance test of wind turbine blade and airfoil is conducted. The tunnel is constituted of a settling chamber, a contraction, closed test section, a diffuser, two corners, a cross leg and a fan and motor. For the performance test, the closed test section width of 1.8 m, height of 1.8 m and length of 5.25 m is selected. The contraction ratio is 9 to 1 and maximum speed in the test section is 67 m/sec. Input power in the tunnel is about 238 kW and its energy ratio is 3.6. The wind tunnel designed in present study will be an effective tool in research and development of wind turbine and airfoil.
Precision Coordinate Transformation and Gravity Acceleration Algorithms

Inertial navigation systems requires gravity model to compute gravity acceleration and its trajectory accuracy depends on the gravity model accuracy especially for a long range flight. The gravity model accuracy is important for satellite orbit prediction as well. The precision gravity model requires a precision coordinate transformation between inertial and Earth fixed coordinates. Precision gravity acceleration algorithms with a coordinate transform are studied and a computer program is developed. The effects of individual model components on trajectory error are analyzed.
Design of Path Tracking Controller Based on Thrusters for the Lunar Lander Demonstrator

Lunar exploration program has been prepared with the aim of launch in the 2020's. As part of it, a lunar lander demonstrator has been developed which is the model for verifying all the system, such as structure, propulsion and control system before launch to deep space. After verifying all the system, the demonstrator will be evaluated by flight test. This paper deals with path tracking controller based on thrusters for the demonstrator. For this, first we derive equations of motion according to the allocation of thrusters and design the path tracking controller. The signal generated from the controller is continuous so PWPF(Pulse-Width Pulse-Frequency) modulator is adopted for generating on/off signal. Finally MATLAB simulation is performed for evaluating the path tracking ability and the final landing velocity.
Attitude Estimation of an Aircraft using Image Data

This paper presents the algorithm for attitude determination of an aircraft using binary image. An image feature vector, which is invariant to translation, scale and rotation, is constructed to capture the functional relations between the feature vector and the corresponding aircraft attitude. An iterated least squares method is suggested for estimating the attitude of given aircraft using the constructed feature vector library. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm yields good estimates of aircraft attitude in most viewing range, although a relatively large error occurs in some limited viewing direction.
Spin-up, Spring-back Load Analysis of KC-100 Nose Landing Gear using Explicit Finite Element Method

The spin-up and the spring-back are most severe load cases in the aircraft landing gear design. These load cases are caused by reciprocal action of complex physical phenomenon such as the friction between a tire and ground, inertia of the rotation of a tire and the flexibility of a landing gear structure. Generally, the empirical formula or the theoretical formula is used to calculate the spin-up and spring-back load in the early stage of the development program of the aircraft landing gear. After the materialization of the design of a landing gear, spin-up and spring-back load are acquired by the free drop test. In this study, the spin-up and the spring-back load of the rubber shock absorber type KC-100 nose landing gear are calculated by the explicit finite element analysis. Through this analysis, more accurate and realistic spin-up and spring back loads could be applied to the early phase of the development of the aircraft landing gear.
Estimation of Fatigue Integrity for Small Aircraft Engine Mount Strut

The estimation of fatigue integrity is very important for aerospace structures such as engine mount strut. The reason is that the fatigue integrity is essential analysis process to establish the structural stability in aerospace field. Therefore, in this paper, the process of fatigue analysis and test was performed for engine mount strut to prove the structural fatigue integrity. First of all, the fatigue load spectrum is constructed by considering the small aircraft operating condition. Fatigue analysis is done for the cluster near the welding zone which may have F.C.L.(fracture critical location). The fatigue life of engine mount strut was estimated by the Miner's rule which is the damage summation method. Finally, Fatigue test is performed to verify the fatigue integrity. The estimation process of fatigue integrity for engine mount strut of small aircraft may help the design.
Flight Loads Analysis for Conceptual Study of the Regional Aircraft Wing Structure

For loads analysis of airplane, applicable regulation should be determined. Then, loads conditions are prepared from the regulation. Modeling for aerodynamic, mass, and structure are performed. Panel method is usually adopted for aircraft loads analysis to obtain air loads. The ARGON which is a multidisciplinary fixed wing aircraft design software co-developed by the KARI and TsAGI are used for loads analysis. The ARGON can be utilized for flutter and stress analysis as well as for flight and ground loads analysis. In this paper, flight loads analysis for wing structural design of the regional aircraft at the conceptual design phase are performed with the ARGON. FAR 25 is used for the regulation for the load analysis. Shear force, bending moment and torsion diagrams for the wing and shear force and hinge moment for the aileron are presented.
An Evaluation Model of the Aviation Industry Development Strategies in Korea using Cross-impact Hierarchy Process

In order to enhance the aviation industry in Korea, many strategies have been published by some researchers as well as the government. However, considering the constrained conditions in real, since the ranking of their importance has not determined yet, they are difficult to be implemented by decision makers. Therefore, in terms of their demand for deciding the significance of strategies, the evaluation model of this paper was developed. In this study, the Cross-impact Hierarchy Process(CHP), an linked model of both the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and Cross Impact Analysis(CIA), was selected as the best model. That is because the strategies are not independent from each other, and one strategy can affect the others depending on its realization, which can be considered in CHP. To achieve our objective, at first, the strategies were categorized and arranged according to the evaluation structure. Secondly, the parameters such as conditional probability and weights were estimated from the survey conducted by 16 experts in the aviation field. Lastly, the result of the assessment were discussed, and further studies were suggested.
Comparative Analysis of Free flight Conflict Detection and Resolution Algorithms

The evaluation of Conflict detection and Resolution Algorithms require the use of analytical that describe encounter flight safety and the costs and benefits of optimization maneuver. A number of such algorithms have been applied in the past to the free flight. Each algorithm has benefits and limitations, and flight safety may be facilitated by combining the best features of various techniques. This paper studied a summary of conflict detection and resolution algorithm approaches. Algorithm techniques are categorized and the fundamental assumptions, capabilities, and limitations of each approach are described. The Algorithms are evaluated and compared based on their applicability to free flight airspace conflict situations.
A Study for Cooperation in Aerospace Industry Between Republic of Korea and Russia

Korea's aerospace industry tries to achieve the exports goal in 2020, 10 billion dollars, in accordance with the "Future aviation industry development master plan", but it's skill is still not keeping pace. To secure and improve the appropriate technology, it is desperately needed to cooperate with advanced countries or companies of aerospace industry, but they are liked to manage their technology transfer or demand tremendous high price. This study presents that Russia could be a another nation which is able to cooperation on aerospace industry. Although Russia had have superior technology in aerospace industry, they have lost the competitiveness on that field after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now, they are trying to regain their original fame in the commercialized way. So, this study suggests practical ways which South Korea and Russia may be helpful each other based on experiences working together.
Cancer Incidence in the Korean Air Force Aircrew

Pilots are exposed to carcinogenic substances like radiation, ozone, exhaust gas from jet engine, and electromagnetic wave, their environment can be very hazardous. I designed this study to know if there is any difference between pilots and general people in cancer incidence. I analyzed cancer cases between 1999 and 2008, and investigated their age, site, aircraft types, and sex. I compared pilot's cancer incidence with general people during same periods. Statistical analysis was performed with standardized incidence ratio (SIR). 10 cases were high performance pilots, 5 cases were low performance pilots. The average age when the diagnosis had been made was
. Pilot's incidence ratio was lower than people's, the most common cancer was kidney, and there was no lung cancer. Cancer is influenced by gene and environment, each country has different patterns. The low incidence ratio in Korean pilots might be due to "healthy worker effect". I think we should perform further investigation on kidney cancer.
A Development of the Program for Flight Suitability Distinction and Calculation of Available Sorties

The flight test comes at the end of the aircraft development process and is an unique part. The purposes of the flight test are to evaluate the characteristics of the aircraft and validate its design in the real operating environment. Atmospheric considerations are key elements, when the planner of flight test establishes the flight test planning. The primary objective of atmospheric considerations is to ensure safety of the vehicle. The planning through atmospheric considerations can minimize flight cancellations caused by severe weather. In this paper, we present a program for flight suitability distinction, and develop a program for calculation of available sorties.
A Study on the Improvement of West Sea Airways between Korea and China

Incheon International Airport is becoming a hub in the Northeast Asia region since its opening in 2001. Along with an increasing volume of air traffic, demands for airspace are also increasing significantly. In particular, air traffic delays have been growing rapidly due to an increasing volume of air traffic, specially flying to Europe through China. And therefore, there should be an alternative protocol to prevent flight delays. The main purpose of this study is to review current West Sea Airways of G597/Y64 which contains highly potential problems and to evaluate the efficacy of double-tracked airways in the west sea area.
EMS Helicopter Operation and Flight Safety in Korea

EMSS is the organic system offering quick and efficient transfer and treatment for those who need an emergency service. For EMS aviation operation is the important transportation for the common benefits. There are several types of aviation operation. Among the different types of the operations, helicopter operation is very common because it is free from any locations. Notwithstanding the benefit, various types of EMS helicopter accidents and incidents are occurred because of its poor operation condition. In South Korea, even though so much effort was put to decrease the accidents rates, there are still many accidents happening by fire helicopters and the forest service helicopters. Therefore, in order to regularize the EMSH operation, measures for the aviation safety have to be prepared. This research is, related to the EMSH, focused on the suggestion of safety measure for the EMSH in Korea based on the accidents analysis in various countries.
