The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 59~70
Background : In recent years, pediatric chronic sinusitis patients who didn't respond with antibiotics were increasing, but there were a few reports on recurrence rate of the herbal medicine therapy treating pediatric chronic sinusitis, so this report was studied. Objective : To know the recurrence rate of herbal medicine therapy in the chronic sinusitis using follow-up investigation. Materials and methods : Thirty four patients(16 male and 18 female) treated in our hospital between December 1998 and August 1999 were studied. Ages ranged from 4 to 13 years (mean age :7.7 years). Twenty five patients(66%) had a underlying family history (allergy or sinusitis of family). In the past history, 32 patients (86%) had asthma, allergy of milk, atopic dermatitis, bronchiolitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Duration of treatment were from eleven to eighteen month (mean:14.3 month). Results : Of the 34 patients, 31 patients were improvement, 3 patients not. Of the 31 patients, thirty patients showed not recurrent (91%). Two patients showed no significant interval change(6%) and one patient was aggrevated(3%). The degree of the Health, thinking of protector for the herb medicine therapy and improvement of sinusitis were significant statistically. (significant <0.005) Conclusion : We know that herbal medicine therapy is the effective treatment of pediatric chronic sinusitis.

Effects of Saenghyetang on Learning and Memory Performances in Mice
Yu Geum-Ryoung ; Chang Gyu-Tae ; Kim Jang-Hyeon ;
The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 77~104
The effects of the oriental herbal medicine Saenghyetang(SHT, 生慧湯), which consists of Rehmanniae Radix (熟地黃 九蒸: was made by 9th steam) 40g, Corni Fructus(山茱黃) 16g, Polygalae Radix(遠志) 8g, Zizyphi Spinosae Semen(酸棗仁) 2g, Biotae Semen(柏子仁 去油: oil ingredient was removed) 20g, Poria Cocos(茯笭) 12g, Ginseng Radix(人蔘) 12g, Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) 2g, Sinapis Semen(白芥子) 8g, on learning ability and memory were investigated. Hot water extract(HWE) and ethanol extract(EE) from SHT were used for the studies. Learning ability and memory are related to modifications of synaptic strength among neurons that interactive. Enhanced synaptic coincidence detection leads to improved learning ability and memory. If the NMDA receptor, a synaptic coincidence detector, acts as a graded switch for memory formations, enhanced signal detection by NMDA receptors should enhance learning ability and memory. It was shown that NR2B was increased in the forebrains of oriental medicine-administrated mice, leading to enhanced activation of NMDA receptors and facilitating synaptic potentiation in response to stimulation at 10-100 Hz. These HWE-SHT treated mice exhibited that superior ability in learning and memory when performing various behavioral tasks, showing that NR2B is enhanced by HWE-SHT treatment and also is critical in gating the age-dependent threshold for plasticity and memory formation. NMDA receptor-dependent modifications, which were mediated in part by HWE administration, of synaptic efficacy, therefore, represent a mechanism for associative learning ability and memory. Results suggest that oriental medical enhancement of NR2B contributes to increase intelligence and memory in mammals On the other hand, to examine the effects of EE-SHT on the learning ability and memory in experimental mice, EE-SHT was tested on passive and active avoidance responses. The EE-SHT ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in mice, but not other memory impairments. EE-SHT(10, 20mg/100 g, p.o.) did not affect the passive avoidance responses of normal mice in the step through and step down tests, the conditioned and unconditioned avoidance responses of normal mice in the shuttle box, lever press performance tests and the ambulatory activity of normal mice in a normal condition. However, EE-SHT at 20 mg/kg significantly decrease the spontaneous motor activity during the shuttle box test, and also to extend the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital in mice. These results suggest that SHT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairments and a weak tranquilizing action.
Study of Growth Disturbance and Endocrine, in the view of Oriental Medicine
Jun Chan-Il ;
The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 105~115
The relation of endocrine in the western medicine and zangfu-organ functions in Korean medicine, related to growth disturbance, was studied and derived the following results. 1. The hormone most related to growth disturbance is, directly secreted from the anterior pituitary or is stimulated and secreted in the target grands, growth hormone, thyroid, adrenocortical hormone, gonadial hormone and is insulin secreted from
cell of langerhans' slands of pancreas. 2. the pituitary has the most close relation with the kidney in the five zang-organ. Because the kidney is innate origin(先天之本) and promotes qi and blood(生化氣血), stores the essence of life(藏精), dominates the bones(主骨) and promotes the marrow(生骨髓). Especially it is connected with brain(通於腦). 3. In the children growth, the endocrine action in the pituitary has the most close relation with the kidney, As in the reports of the brain and spinal cord, bone, store essence of life, sexual maturation and decline(kidney-qi, sexual functions of both sexes(天癸)) etc, and cause of cretinism, dwarf in the main subject. 4. Somatomedin is the most important factor of the growth factors, IGF in another word. The unification of IGF and secretion is controlled firstly according to growth hormone, however is very closely related to the nutrition status in the non-hormonic causes. Also, it is affected very much by the insulin. 5. Insulin is one of the important hormone related to the growth and is secreted from the pancreas. Pancreas belongs to the functional system of spleen in oriental medicine, thus the growth disturbance, occurred due to error in insulin secretion and nutrition(in another words, the lack of postnatal essential substance from food-stuff(水穀精氣)), is closely related to the spleen. 6. From the results driven above, the hormone action of endocrine and problem in secretion, related to the growth disturbance, must be focused on the differentiation of symptoms and signs of the kidney and the spleen in oriental medicine.

The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 155~164
Bedwetting is a common symptom with many cause. Noctural enuresis is the most frequent cause of bedwetting and is recognized by the absence of other urinary symptoms or sign of disease. The author treated nocturnal enuresis in children who visited Nocturnal Enuresis Clinic in KOMC(Kyunghee Orientla Medical Center, Seoul, Korea) by Radix Ephedrae. The result were obtained as follows: 1. The grade of nocturnal enuresis in children treated by Radix Ephedrae was significantly decreased. (p<0.01) 2. There is no significant correlation between the effect of Radix Ephedrae and the age of children. 3. There is no significant correlation between the effect of Radix Ephedrae and the initial grade of nocturnal enuresis. According to above result, Radix Ephedrae is considered to be efficacious against nocturnal enuresis in children.
Study on inspection in children for establishing database of computerizing diagonsis
Kim Jang-Hyun ;
The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 165~182
In oriental medicine, diagnostic method was the four examination(四診) which was composed of inspection(望診), inquiring(問診), listening and smelling(聞診), palpation(切診). Inspection of skin color(望色) indicated the observation of patient's complexion(色診). In oriental medical theory, complexion of face was related to meridians(經絡) and zang-fu(贓腑). The change of complexion was reflected the ups and downs of qi(氣) and blood(血), the relative seriousness of an illness. especially, observation of complexion was essential in children, because of diagnostic difficulty and positive change according to each disease. The purpose of this study was to construct for standard measurement and invent for computerizing diagnostic system which was based on observation of complexion. It was objectively measured complexion using spectrophotometer and chroma meter. Measurement of complexion should make an offer the index of diagnosis.

The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 15, issue 1, 2001, Pages 235~253
Tae-yeul is the baby's disorder inheritted by its mother during fregnancy. This is due to its mother's overeating hot, fatty food and taking harmful medicine. So internal physical fever is accumulated in mother's body, and it heats up the placenta and the umbilical cord. Generally, this disorder means the skin disease that is occurred from
months to 1 year after birth. It is specialized by the dirty oozing, a severe itching and the rash at its head and face. It is similar in its symptoms such as atopic dermatitis in western medicine. Recently, this disease has the increasing tendency of prevalence rate because of the bad atmosphere and the invironmental pollution. The results were summerised as follows; 1, 2, 3, 4 1. The causes of Tae-yeul are summarized by fragnat woman's contacting a cool air, overating a hot and toxic food and taking emotional shock. 2. The symptoms of Tae-yeul are the edema on upper eyelids, stifling convulsions, flush, the fever of one side body, the asthma of sputum increase, the yawing of the tired mind, the bowl complaint, the red urine and urination disturbance. 3. In the treatment method of Tae-yeul, its mother feed her milk after taking a madicine. So one must expect to be treated slowly. If one tries to treat it with a cool madicine quickly, it can cause vomitting or a serious disorder. 4. In the prescription of Tae-yeul, they used a Moktongsan, a Chiwhnagtang, an Yangyoubang, a Tojuksan, a Whangyunsan, a Juryungtang and a Kamdutang, etc.. For the method of cleaning face or bathing, they used Sasungsan, Whanbaekpijuntang. 5. Tae-yeul including Naesun, Taelyumchang, yousun, etc. is similar to the atopic dermatitis of western medicine in its symptoms.
