The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 20, issue 2, 2006, Pages 19~34
Objective : The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of Jowonsangamibang(JWS) on the growth of rats. Methods : First of all, we divided male Sprague-Dawley rats into 4 groups(J1, J2, J3 and sham group). Then J1, J2 and J3 groups were administered with JWS water extracts(JWSE) once a day at a dosage 250, 500, 1,000mg/kg respectively for 3 weeks. The sham group was administered with normal saline in the same manner. And we measured body weight, amount of body weight increased, length of femur, serum GH, serum IGF-I, serum TSH and serum testosterone after each week. Results : There were no significant changes of body weight, the level of GH, TSH, and testosterone in J1, J2 and J3 groups. The change of body weight gained was increased significantly in the J3 group compared with the sham group after 1, 2 and 3 weeks. The length of the femur was increased significantly in the J2 group after 1 week and in the J3 group after 3 weeks compared with the sham group. The level of IGF-I in the serum was increased significantly in J1, J3 after 1 week compared with the sham group. Conclusion : According to the results above, JWS increased body weight, length of femur, serum GH, serum IGF-1 compared with the sham group. This study shows that JWS has an effect on promoting the growth of rats, thus it's expected to treat of growth delay in children.

Objective : As today obese children have increased rapidly in Korea, the interest has been much increased. And parents concern about the effect of Herbal Medication(HM) on gaining weight. Therefore we had a retrospective study HM and obesity for children. Method : We examined medical record of 38 patients who visited to Department of Pediatrics in 00 medical center from 2002 to 2006 and took HM. Their Hight, Weight, Obesity Index(OI) were estimated at two points: before and after HM treatment. And they were divided into two groups according to the HM type and analyzed for differences of OI. Result : There were no significant changes in 38 patients's OI before and after treatment. But only one case gained over weight(OI: 21.31). OI increased slightly after treatment but there were not statistically significance. OI according to the HM type had slightly difference but there were not statistically significance. There were no connections between HM type, the number of days taking HM and changes of OI. Conclusion : On the basis of this study, we thought there were no connections between HM and obesity for children. But this study's cases are small in number so more study is need.

Chang, Gyu-Tae ; Han, Yun-Jeong ;
The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 20, issue 2, 2006, Pages 147~175
Objective : This study is to investigate the method for assesment and diagnosis of ADHD, especially focusing on behavior rating scales. Methods : We searched the recent date of the publication and paper in ADHD. Results : For Assesment and Diagnosis of ADHD, various method such as interview with parents, child and teacher, behavior observation, behavior rating scales and neuropsychological test are used. The structured interview consists of the restrictive questions and response, and then have diagnostic algorithm, consequently can be used by untrained clinicians. Of the structured interview, standardization of K-SADS in Korean version is finished. Behavior rating scales, the form of parent, teacher and self-report questionnaires, are used as diagnosis and treatment evaluation of ADHD. Behavior rating scales consist of both ADHD-specific scales and broad-band scales designed to screen for various symptoms (including ADHD symptoms). ADHD-specific scales are useful in differential diagnosis, discrimination of subtype, treatment evaluation, However, broad-band scales are useful in preliminary examination. The neuropsychological tests can evaluate attention deficit and effect of attention deficit on cognitive function and academic performance. The neuropsychological tests also used in diagnosis and treatment evaluation of ADHD. Conclusion : For Assesment and Diagnosis of ADHD, various method are used, especially behavior rating scales are both useful and simple tool for diagnosis and treatment evaluation.
Effects of Bangpoongtongsungsan on Adipose Tissue and Hyperlipidemia of 3T3-L1 Induced Rats
Lee, Jin-Yong ; Kim, Deog-Gon ; Lee, Kyung-Tae ; Cha, Min-Kyung ;
The Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine, volume 20, issue 2, 2006, Pages 177~196
Objective : This experimental study was designed to determine the effects of BPT on obesity in vivo and in vitro. Methods : in vitro, BPTn extracts of various concentration(50, 100, 200
) were added in 3T3-L1 cell. Adipocyte differentiation was measured by Oil Red O staining and Morphological examination. The expression of
receptor was measured by western blot assay and RT-PCR in vivo, Rats were orally administered BPT daily for consecutive four weeks before poloxamer-407 induced hyperlipidemic state. The rats were sacrificed 24 hrs later for poloxamer-407 treated and then serum triglyceride, total cholesterol were measured ; Rats were orally administered BPT daily for consecutive four weeks before triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemic state. The rats were sacrificed 40 hrs later for triton WR-1339 treated and then serum triglyceride, total cholesterol were measured ; Rats with obesity were induced by the high fat-diet for six weeks and then serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, hydroxy radical, superoxide dismuatse activity were measured. Results : In vitro, The 3T3-L1 cells' differentiation was significantly decreased by BPT. The expression of
was decreased by BPT. In vivo, BPT significantly reduced serum triglyceride, total cholesterol contents in poloxamer-407 treated rat. BPT significantly reduced serum triglyceride contents in Triton WR-1339 treated rat. Total cholesterol also reduced but did not show a significant change. BPT significantly reduced body weight gain of rat and adipose tissue mass of rats and serum triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol contents and significantly increased HDL-cholesterol, HTR(HDL-cholesterol/Total-cholesterol) in rats with obesity induced by the high fat-diet. BPT reduced blood lipid peroxide, hydroxy radical and increased superoxide dismuatse(SOD) activity.
