In this study, we determined TBP(T-branched pipe) would be available in Fire Safety Codes with strength analyses. A common FEM Program(ABAQUS) was used as analyses method, and the analyses results were confirmed by strength tests of the T-branch pipe. As a result, we concluded that the T-branch pipe can be used safely. Further more, we determined what kind of stainless steel pipe can be used in place of carbon steel pipe(KS D 3507). The stainless steel pipe name Is KS D 3576(stainless steel pipe) 10S, so they can be applied for piping in fire protection system.

Lee, Jong-Ho ; Kim, Doo-Hyun ; Kim, Sung-Chul ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 42~47
This paper presents the development of a case-based system for an electrical fire cause diagnosis system using the entity relation database. The relation database which provides a very simple but powerful way of representing data is widely used. The system focused on database construction and cause diagnosis can diagnose the causes of electrical fires easily and efficiently. In order to store and access to the information concerned with electrical fires, the key index items which identify electrical fires uniquely are derived out. The case-based system consists of a case which contains information from the past fires. The case-based system could present the cause of a newly occurred fire to be diagnosed by searching the case-based database for reasonable matching. The case-based system has not only searching functions with multiple attributes by using the collected various information(such as fire evidence, structure, and weather of a fire scene) but also more improved diagnosis functions which can be easily used for the electrical fire cause diagnosis system.
The Measurement and Prediction of the Flash Points for the Water+2-Propanol System Using Open-Cup Apparatus
Ha, Dong-Myeong ; Lee, Sung-Jin ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 48~53
The knowledge of the flash point of the mixtures is very important for prevention and protection of fire in the industrial field. The flash points for the water+2-propanol system were measured by using Tag open-cup apparatus(ASTM D1310-86). The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, the Van Laar equation and the NRTL(Non Random Two Liquids) equation. The calculated values based on the Van Laar and NRTL equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. It was concluded that Van Laar and NRTL equations were more effective than the Raoult' law at describing the activity coefficients for non-ideal solution such as the water+2-propanol system. And the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the Van Law equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than was the case when the prediction model was based upon the NRTL equation.
Review of Spatting Effect on Concrete Element in Fire
Kim, Hyung-Jun ; Han, Sang-Hoon ; Choi, Seng-Kwan ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 54~63
Concrete is generally accepted to have good inherent fire resistance. It mainly relies on the assumption that concrete has low heat-transfer characteristic and spatting does not occur during the course of a fire. However, the significant numbers of fire accidents have shown in recent years that incidence of spatting has caused sever damages to many structures. This review has systematically investigated the behaviour of concrete in fire, including phenomenon of spatting, with respect to the theorical consideration and experimental results. Explosive spatting is caused by the build-up of water vapor pressure in concrete subjected to increasing temperatures. When this pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete over a fire-exposed area, explosive spatting can result in a typical temperature range between
. The major functions are known to be moisture content, pore pressure, load ratio, and heating regime.
Deposition of Inhaled Smoke Particles Produced by Fire
Goo, Jae-Hark ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 64~73
The absorption characteristics of hazardous materials onto human body and defense mechanism differ from each other region within the respiratory tracts, thus adverse health effects of inhaled smokes are associated with not only the concentration but also the location of the particles deposited. In this work, the deposition fraction per surface area and the deposition sites of the smoke particles in human respiratory tracts for each rest and light exercise conditions together with oral and nasal breathing were calculated by using segmental volume tracking method. The results would be used for deriving the amount of absorption of hazardous materials onto human body, thus contribute to the health risk assessments of inhaled fire smokes.

Lee, Sang-Ku ; Lee, Yong-Kyu ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 74~86
In order to analyze causes and results of job stress among fire fighters, the structural model was developed and reviewed by a survey asking questions about job stress, job commitment role confusion and relationships with co-workers to 961 fire fighters working in Seoul, Korea. Results of research are correspond with previous research results done in different working environment although fire lighters experienced much higher job stress than average public officers. According to research results, both' job character' and 'relationships with co-worker' influenced 'job stress' and 'job commitment' directly at a statistically significant level. 'Role confusion' influenced 'job stress' directly but influenced 'job commitment' indirectly through 'job stress'. Results of this research could be utilized for expressing necessity of building a job stress management system for fire fighters in Korea.

Choi, Nag-Soon ; An, Sang-Bong ;
Fire Science and Engineering, volume 21, issue 2, 2007, Pages 87~97
This study is to investigate the problems of procurement circumstance of the current fire service funds and to suggest the alternatives for procuring the fire service funds for dealing with increasing demand on the fire service in the local autonomous era. The results are as the followings. First, most fire service officers see the procurement circumstances as premature stage and perceive the necessity of the improvement of this condition. In particular, the officers at the fire center recognize this problem as an urgent question than the officers at the front fire branches. In addition, as for the alternatives of the procurement of fire service funds, both groups prefer the long term plan to the short term plan, and show positive responses to the National Emergency Management Agency and central government as the entity to raise fire funds. As for the alternatives to improve financial system, both groups show the most positive responses on the way to increase the current common facilities tax. As for the specific procurement alternatives of fire funds, both groups agree the alternative to increase common facilities tax mostly, and to the next they agree the alternative to insecure fire funds by restructuring current financial system and by establishing fire service hospital and fire equipment maintenance center.
