A Numerical Study for the Performance of Natural Smoke-venting of a Vertical Vent

In this study, the effects of vent location, outside temperature, wind velocity and fire size on the performance of natural venting of the vertical vent designed according to NFPA 204 standard and fire characteristics were numerically investigated using CFAST. In cases of the Vent located on most upper wall, lower outside temperature and lower wind velocity, vents met the performance criteria of venting. The larger fire size becomes, the more mass flow rate through a vent becomes, but the lower interface height of smoke layer becomes, so that vent didn't meet the performance criteria of venting. It should be noted that a natural vertical vent be designed considering maximum outside temperature and maximum wind velocity and developing a design fire accurately in order to meet the performance criteria of venting.
A Study on the Ventilation Conditions for the Prevention of Spontaneous Combustion of Small Ship Engine Room

In order to show the most suitable ventilation conditions for the prevention of spontaneous combustion of small ship engine room, We have performed CFD simulation and analyzed flow and temperature fields. The flow patterns indicated differently according to the number and location of supply and exhaust opening. The case of locating the exhaust openings at the center of left and right side ceiling to the longitudinal symmetric line were more effective to eliminate the generated heat. When the number of supply and exhaust openings were increased, the case of increasing the number of exhaust opening showed more suitable ventilation conditions. The most suitable ventilation conditions in order to prevent the spontaneous combustion of small ship engine room was predicted that the supply opening located at the center of front and after side ceiling to across symmetric line, and the exhaust opening located at the center of both side walls.
The Influence of Natural Smoke Ventilators and Wind Velocities on the Stack effect in High-rise Buildings

The performance of natural smoke ventilators in High-rise buildings was analyzed by investigating the stack effect depending on the wind velocities using CONTAMW tool. The results showed that the opening of smoke ventilators can influence on the stack effect in the building thus moving the position of the neutral plane toward the opened smoke ventilators. The outside wind velocities can move up the neutral plane toward the top of the building thus increasing pressure differentials at the bottom of the building. The smoke ventilators can maintain its normal performance without outside wind, however, strong outside wind can prevent natural smoke exhaust due to the infiltration of outside air at the ventilators.
Development of Flame and Smoke Detection for Early Fire Recognition

In this paper, a flame and smoke detection algorithm is proposed to recognize a fire. Flame and smoke have specific color distribution and continuously change shapes of them. In the proposed flame detection algorithm, specific regions are candidated as flame by color distributions and variations of frames of video. Some of candidated regions are decided as flame by the magnitude of motion vector. To determine smoke in the field of view of camera, edge is important because high frequency component is decreased by it. Candidated region of smoke is assigned by color distributions, inter-frame differences and the value of edge. The candidated region is settled as smoke region with magnitude of motion vector. As results of simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is useful for flame and smoke detection.
A Study on the Application of Simple Sprinkler Facility at Single Housing

Presently, there is no legal regulation pertaining to the installation, maintenance, management and operation of fire-fighting facilities in single housing in Korea, relying instead on the awareness of the residents which hopefully will prevent fire. Likewise, accident prevention effort is very limiting and weak. Accordingly, this research examines current situation in which fire results, identifies root causes and studies application of regulations and develop design measures centered on the single housing that is most afflicted with fire. As part of the measure to prevent fire that afflict housing, it is necessary to classify single housing as specific target for fire fighting just like the joint housing among the types of the building structures that are classified according to the usage on the "Appendix Chart I of the Enforcement Ordinance of the Construction Law" for management purpose. Moreover, it is necessary to make the installation of fire-fighting facilities such as simple sprinkler facility for residential area, fire extinguisher, warning system and others for the sake of the senior citizens and disabled people who reside in single housing, mandatory.
Research on the Reliability Improvement of Automatic Fire Alarm System

This research is to provide a scheme for an automatic fire alarm system with higher reliability through solving problems of malfunctioning (false or missing fire alarm) and power interruption (result from frequently unwanted activation, etc) of an automatic fire alarm system. A digital control system with microprocessor-based is proposed to reduce the possibility of malfunctioning through a combinational use of heat, smoke and CO sensors. Higher reliability could be achieved by these multiple sensors based fire detection system and fire distinction algorithm. In this research, we implemented actual fire detection system and conducted fire test to verify improvement on reliability.
A Study on the Problem and Improvement of Fire Detector Test in the Field Inspection

This study has been conducted for the purpose of considering the problems expected when checking the smoke detector at site and how to improve the smoke detector. We have conducted this study focused on checking the problems expected upon site inspection and finding out the way of improving the site inspection by analyzing the reliability and performance of instrument used upon site inspection. The test results show that some problems exist in the reliability and performance of instrument used for the site inspection of smoke detector way of inspecting the inspection instrument.
Research on Overheat Protection Techniques of Connection Parts of MCCB by Poor Contact

In this study, damage characteristics of MCCB and terminal block due to poor contact were analyzed, and various poor contact detection techniques were suggested. Firstly, the detection techniques using thermocouple and infrared thermal camera were analyzed respectively. Also, thermo-cap during poor contact detected abnormal status effectively by changing its color, and the detection system using an odor detector and odor capsules was analyzed. Lastly, poor contact detection screw was made using characteristics of fusible alloy, and we applied the poor contact detection screw to terminal block. The above methods could prevent electrical fire caused by poor contact effectively if they are used properly.
A Study on the Response Characteristics Depending on Service Life of Ionization Smoke Detector

This paper studied on the response characteristics depending on service life of ionization smoke detector. The experimental samples used ionization smoke detectors (360 EA) for over 5 years which were influenced by environment set up with fire objects. The experimental method performed operate and non-operate test according to 'Type Approval and Technical Regulation of Detector (KOFEIS 0301)', for estimate the response characteristics of ionization smoke detector depending on service life. The results showed that their response characteristics were rapidly decreasing when the longer their using period. Accordingly, it is desirable that ionization smoke detector has to be changed for early fire detection when passed their service life.
Estimation of the Flash Points for n-Propanol+Formic acid System Using the Binary Parameters Optimization Method

An accurate knowledge of the flash point is important in developing appropriate preventive and control measures in industrial fire protection. The lower flash points for the n-propanol+formic acid system were measured by Pensky-Martens closed cup apparatus. This binary mixture exhibited MFPB (minimum flash point behavior), which leads to the minimum on the flash point vs composition curve. The Raoult's law and optimization method using Wilson equation were used to predict the lower flash points and were compared with experimental data. The calculated values based on the optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.
A Study for the Safety Regulation of Tank Car for the Hazardous Material - General Oil Tank Car

Recently, there are so many studies related safety of railway vehicle. But these studies are focused on the passenger car, metro system and high speed train. However, the leakage of hazardous materials may contaminate the environment and cause terrible damage to the ecology, even the human and properties. And so, Safety and security have been already established in many countries, currently they are investing lots of money on the development of technology to prevent accidents. Therefore it is necessary to make a systematic plan and develop safety specifications. In this study, we compared between domestic and international general oil tank car safety regulations for the hazardous materials, and prepare the basic for the making of systematic safety plans and safety regulations for the transport of hazardous materials by tank car.
Survey of Building Structural Elements located at Underground for Improvement of Fire Resistant Performance

Researches on fire resistant performance of primary structural elements such as columns and beams located at above the ground have actively been doing than those located at the below the ground from many researchers. But the structural elements such as columns at underground is very important in aspects of not only structural performance but also fire environment. The columns at the basement carry all the structural loads from the above and that means very critical in fire circumstances than that located at above the grounds. To evaluate the fire resistance performance of primary structural elements located at below the ground we conducted several sorts of surveys that contained fire regulations from several countries and structural types, materials and status of passive fire protection methods.
A Study on the Anti-Spalling Performance of High-Strength Concrete Members by covered Engineered Cementitious Composite

The purpose of this study is to obtain the fundamental fire resistance performance of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) under fire temperature in order to use the fire protection material in high-strength concrete structures. The present study conducted the experiment to simulate fire temperature by employing of ECC and investigated experimentally the explosion and cracks in heated surface of these ECC. In the experimental studies, 5 HSC specimens are being exposed to fire, in order to exami ne the influence of vari ous parameters (such as depth of layer=20, 30, 40 mm; construction method=lining and repairing type) on the fire performance of HSC structures. Employed temperature curve were ISO 834 criterion (3 hr), which are severe in various criterion of fire temperature in building structures. The numerical regressive analysis and proposed equation to calculate ambient temperature distribution is carried out and verified against the experimental data. By the use of proposed equation, the HSC members subjected to fire loads were designed and discussed.
A Study on the Revitalization Method of the Korean Volunteer Fire Brigade

It is essential that the operational system of volunteer fire brigade (VFB) playing a important role in the local disaster prevention should be effectively improved to live in safety by protecting life and property of inhabitants from a disaster. The results of this research showed that most of volunteering members of fire brigade was highly satisfied with their works and thus they voluntarily did volunteer activities. It was also found that the development of the professional education program and training course about disaster prevention should be required because members of the volunteer fire brigade lacked expertise about the disaster prevention. Moreover, in order to activate and expand VFB, the establishment of the fundamental ideology about the activities of VFB, the introduction of effective selection examination system for the VFB and the creation of department fully responsible for the management of the VFBs should be necessary as well.
Analysis on Personnel System and Talent Cultivation System of the Tokyo Fire Department

This study analyzed recruiting system, competence requirement system, promotion system by competence verification, and expert training system in fire officials of the Tokyo Fire Department. The recruiting system is classified into expert and Grade 1, 2, and 3 and all grades are appointed as a fire fighter. According to the competence requirement system, while in office, fire officials who have a certain qualification defined in the recruiting system can change their recruiting classification according to their ability such as Grade
Grade 2 or 1 or expert, Grade
or expert, or Grade
expert. The promotion system requires working hard, capability suitable to their grade, and careful verification. Also, a variety of on-site training and qualification systems are provided to reinforce professionalism of staffs and executives.
