Evacuation Simulation for the Exit with a Windbreak Door in Underground Arcade

This paper presents a study on the evacuation analysis in underground arcade. In this study, the effect of the exit with a windbreak door has been investigated by using evacuation simulation program (building EXODUS). Also, the simulation has included the impact of smoke, heat and toxic gases by fire simulation program (CFAST). The results were obtained for the conditions of without and with door of the two exit with 1,088 evacuation population. As a results, for non-fire evacuation, there was only a little difference of evacuation time for both conditions. However, for fire emergency evacuation, the evacuation time for the condition with door increased more 110 seconds than for the condition without door. When the auto door not opened, the evacuation time was increased more 670 seconds than for the condition without door. Consequently, in case of fire, the automatic door should be operating by the signal of fire detector and keep open when the fire accidents. To lead the evacuees well to the escape route the luminaries for an emergency exit sign have to be reinforced to the wall and floor around the exit.
Detection of Indication of Electric Accident in Simulated Electric Equipments Using Standard Deviation and Probability Distribution

This paper describes a detecting method for indication of an electric accident in electric equipments. For that, loads of electric equipment is consisted of incandescent lamps. And the electric accident is simulated a tracking test apparatus according to KS C IEC (Korea Standard C International Electrostatic Commission) 60112 at some part of the simulation of the electric equipment. Simulated electric accident is occurred from static states through discharge in progress, carbon formation to tracking breakdown. The total current of electric equipments is measured and analyzed for detecting of indication of the electric accident using a current monitor. For the result, as an electric accident processed, as a current pulse is bigger and a ratio of appearance also increases at certain part of current waveforms. And standard deviation and probability distribution for certain part of current waveforms show remarkably different pattern in each step of electric accident which is irrespective of amount of load.
Electrical Properties about Thermal and Water Degradation of Epoxy Powder for Bus Duct

Epoxy powder is being in use for insulation materials widely. Especially, in cause of coating insulation can be caused electrical fire and explosion by Joul's heat. This study has been compared and examined around breakdown, arc discharge, and V-t about insulation of Epoxy powder. Also, it has been researched about insulation which is cause of electrical fire and its basic data. According to temperature change, sample KS was stable before the Tg to be about
decrease in the breakdown test. In case of V-t and arc discharge, it had been kept up suitable characteristic. Also, in case of electrical characteristic, sample KS has excellent capacity.
Development of Performance Index for Ubiquitous Building Fire Safety System - Focused on Sprinkler System -

For managing fire safety system in building by ubiquitous management system, the index system to express the performance level of fire protection system is demanded. If some component formed fire protection system such as sprinkler water supply system is breakdown, that will fall down the performance of fire protection capacity. Consequently, it will affects the level of fire safety of building management and energy response. Consequently, Building fire protection system could give performance level of fire protection condition and the level of fire safety in building. It will also contribute to the development of wide area fire safety management. This development of index system has been developed as a part of the development project of Ubiquitous building fire management system.
A Study on the Prediction of Residual Strength of Concrete Filled Steel Tube Column without Fire Protective Coating by Unstressed Heating

Recently, fire resistance in high-rise building is becoming major problem socially. So it is need of hour to study on fire resistance in buildings. This study estimates fire resistance performance to utilized CFT (Concrete filled steel tube, below CFT) column in the high structure. But it is difficult quantitative evaluation about fire resistant performance of CFT. Therefore, this study made CFT specimen that determine the factor which is strength of concrete and then CFT column was exposed to heating controlled as closely as possible the ISO-834 standard fire curve. Also, tried to analyze internal temperature through nonlinear transient heat flow analysis. And, presumed extant compressive strength on the basis of this.
Electrical Fire Disaster Prevention Device of Double Protection using a High Precision Current Sensor in Low Voltage Distribution System

Nowadays the diversity and large-capacity of electric appliances are strong effect on electrical fires augment in an alarming way. But, as the inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD (Residual Current protective Device) used on low voltage power distribution system, so control of overload and electric short circuit faults, major causes of electrical fires, are not enough. Therefore, this paper is confirmed the unreliability of the existing RCD by electrical fault simulator and is proposed a Electrical Fire Disaster Prevention Device (EFDPD) by using a high precision current sensor (namely, reed switch) for the prevention of electrical disasters in low voltage power distribution system caused by overload or electric short circuit faults. The sensitive reed switch in the proposed EFDPD exactly detects the increased magnetic flux with the overload or the short current caused by a number of electrical faults, and the following, the EFDPD has double protection function which operates self circuit breaker or rapidly cuts off the existing RCD. The proposed EFDPD is confirmed the excellent characteristics in response velocity and accuracy in comparison with the conventional circuit breaker through various operation performance analysis. The proposed EFDPD can also prevent electrical disaster, like as electrical fires, which resulted from the malfunction and inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD.
The Study on Effective Maintenance and Management of the Fire Fighting Equipment

The field of fire administration has been reinforced and intensified with the manpower and all sorts of equipment, but since the consequence that was mainly given undue value to the quantitative expansion, some problems in the aspect of maintenance and management have been emerged. Characteristically, though, fire equipment should be highly practical, economically efficient and durable, and also have the effectiveness of utilizing them to the right place, maintaining and managing are not as appropriate as they need to have. Therefore, the research provide the effective measures of operating fire equipment by making a comparative study of problems drawn by the analysis of actual conditions on the maintenance and the management of fire equipment.
An Experimental Study on the Improvement of Fire Extinguishing Performance of Water Mist with Foam

We carried out the water mist fire extinguishing experiments with the 3 kinds of foaming agents varied on the nozzle height. Test result showed that 2% AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) and 1% synthetic foaming agent for water mist system are the faster extinguishing time than the pure water mist and 3% AFFF solution. Additionally, the best fire extinguishing performance of pure water mist was shown at 3.5m nozzle height and that of the foaming agents shown at 4m nozzle height.
A Study on the Response Characteristics of Fire Detector by Full-scale Experiment of Fire Phenomena in the Row House

This paper is for response feature of fire detectors not only to analysis response feature of fire detector, but also to observe flame spread of inside-building and fire enlargement by using the row house which is supposed to be broken up. Many kinds of popular detectors such as heat type detector(differential type, fixed temperature type, Analogue type)and smoke type(light scattered type, Analogue type, single alarm type) were installed in the house in order to check for the change of temperature by installing of thermocouples. As a result, smoke detectors are better than heat detectors when it comes to making effective fire-detect system in the row house.
Numerical and Experimental Study on the Fire Whirl Characteristics of Oriental Oak Leaves

The fire whirl occurring in the urban and/or wildland fire is generated by the instabilities of atmosphere. The fire whirl is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force. In this study, experimental and numerical studies are performed with oriental oak leaves, for investigating of the fire whirl characteristics occurred in wildland fire. As a result of experiment, the circulation intensity increases as the induced air speed increases, then the heat release rate and flame height increase 22.8%, 18.4% compared with open fire in highest circulation. Furthermore the numerical results shows same trend with the experiment.
A Study on the Effective Fire and Smoke Control in Road-Tunnel with Semi-Transverse Ventilation (Oversized Exhaust System)

The smoke control system plays the most important role in securing evacuation environment when a fire occurs in road tunnels. Smoke control methods in road tunnels are classified into two categories which are longitudinal ventilation system and transverse ventilation system. In this study it is intended to review the characteristics of smoke behavior by performing numerical analysis for calculating the optimal smoke exhaust air volume when a fire occurs in tunnels in which transverse ventilation is applied, and for obtaining the basic data required for the design of smoke exhaust systems by deriving optimal smoke exhaust operational conditions for various conditions. As a result of this study, when the critical velocity in the tunnel is 1.75m/s and 2.5m/s, the optimal smoke exhaust air volume has to be more than
for the distance of the smoke moving which can limit the distance to 250m. In addition, in case of uniform exhaust the generated smoke is effectively taken away if the two exhaust holes near the fire region are opened at the same time.
A Study on the Development of Standardization Tester for the Field Inspection of the Rate of Rise Spot Type Heat Detector

This paper studied on the development of standardization tester for the field inspection of the rate of rise spot type heat detector. It was to find the problems of the 4 type's testers such as A type (electric bulb type), B type (halogen lamp type), C type (heating coil type), D type (fumigator type) which were used to check of the rate of rise spot type heat detector in inspection for the fire protection. To identify those problems, this paper described about the development of standardization tester for the field inspection of the rate of rise spot type heat detector and that have the function of auto setting temperature more
higher than room temperature and keep the constant temperature. And keep the constant wind velocity of 85cm/sec. Performance verification results of the developed prototype that had same conditions such as the sensitivity test conditions at the type approval of the rate of rise spot type heat detector.
A Study on the Major Standards and Actual Conditions of Evacuation Safety in Child Care Facility

Recently, the number of child care facility and social demand for high quality child care service increase suddenly. Especially, social atmosphere about fire safety is more sensitive in Korea. The majority of the residents in a child care facility are composed of early childhood having difficulty to evacuate, and therefore the number of stories of a building and the appropriateness of a evacuation equipment play an important role in the evacuation safety. In this study, problems and improvements for the evacuation safety are dealt with the present conditions of child care facilities, the comparative analysis between domestic and foreign standards, the research on the actual condition of evacuation equipments, and so on. The study brings to a conclusion that it is necessary to systematize the regulations regarding fire safety, to connect fire-fighting facilities for design standards and operations of emergency preparation equipments, to improve the regulations for fire protection system such as the sprinkler system, and to restrict the facilities having fire hazards.
A Prediction Model on Porosity of Hardened Cement Paste under High Temperatures

The thermal degradation of concrete results mainly from two mechanisms. The first one is related to phase transformations of constituents at different temperatures. The initial constituents transform to other phases due to elevated temperature. The second mechanism is related to the temperature sensitivity of the mechanical properties of the constituents in concrete. Therefore, the degradation of concrete under high temperatures must be studied from both mechanical and chemical points of view. This study was performed as a basic study to propose the material models of concrete exposed to high temperatures considering above two mechanisms. This study presents a prediction model on the porosity of hardened cement paste considering phase changes according to temperature increase.
An Experimental Study on Thermal Damage and Spalling of Concrete Lining in Tunnel Fire

In tunnel, though the frequency of fire occurrence is relatively lower than other structures, the characteristics of sealed space tends to cause the temperature to rapidly rise to more than
within 5minutes after fire, which might eventually lead to a large fire that usually results in a loss of lives and the damage to the properties, not to mention a huge cost necessary for repair and maintenance after fire. We have developed various conditions of the heating furnace and the method to install a thermo couple within the furnace based on EFNARC and KS F 2257-1. Referring to tunnel fire scenarios, it clarified the heat transfer characteristics of concrete PC panel lining depending on fire intensity (ISO,
/SEC, MHC, RWS), and to identify the range of thermal damage, the evaluation was carried out using ITA standard. As a result, 30mm under ISO fire condition, 20mm under
/SEC, 100mm under MHC and 50mm under RWS were measured. And when it comes to spalling, 30mm was measured under RWS and MHC.
A Study about Research on the Actual Condition for Fire Counterplan of Main Temple Wooden Cultural Properties

This study is researched about the field trip of temples and the data for fire extinguishment manual of fire stations: it is done from June 2008 to December 2008 the 80 main temple wooden cultural properties among the 124 main wooden cultural properties appointed by the Cultural Heritage Administration. Cultural properties appointment classification, location classification, temple area, building area in a temple, building area of appointment cultural properties, a fire engine drive direction for fire suppression in a fire, distance from a fire station, and present condition of a fire administrator are researched. The cultural properties possess characteristic is in 2 cases: the whole things in a temple are appointed as cultural properties and only the wooden building is. The cultural properties are classified: the transport is possible or not. The special quality of cultural properties are classified for early correspondence and cultural properties transport in a fire and the basic data are arranged for damage limitation.
A Study on Leaking amount Test of Control Damper - For a Performance Based Designed of Smoke Control System -

This study measured smoke control damper leaking amount of condition of various kinds examination regarding AMCA Standard 500-D-98. As result of study establish because smoke control damper leaking amount performance curve that use tester data of engineering applies right design method of smoke control system and test method design, drawing examination, performance test and do so that right comprehension and performance about skill may be defined. Also user wishes to prove performance of smoke control system and construct smoke control system of reliable performance-based design derive smoke control damper quality improvement continuously selection of smoke control damper by performance judgment of performance curve.
