The Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 7~17
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taping therapy on activities of daily livings (ADL), hand function and range of motion in poststroke-hemiplegic patients. Sample were selected from 20 poststroke-hemiplegic patients at public health center in the period from September 5 to November 21, 2001. The research design was one group pretest-posttest design. The hemiplegia period of the participants was from one year to five years. The pretest and posttest included measuring activity of daily livings(ADL), instrumental activity of daily livings(IADL), hand function, range of motion, quality of life. In this research design, a treatment were to expose taping therapy who were received self-help management program. This self-help management program was composed of five sessions and each session had health education on stroke, diet, risk factor, ROM exercise and recreation. 20 patients were treated with kinesio taping(Nippon Sigmax Co., Ltd., Benefact(r), width 50mm). Tapes were applied to the Deltoid, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Brachioradialis with paralyzed upper extremity. The taping therapy was performed once a week for 5 weeks. SPSS Win 8.0 was used for the data analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The score of BADL was increased from 30.5 to 33.95 after program, and that was statistically significant(p=.019). 2) The score of IADL was increased from 11.6 to 12.75 after program, but that was statistically insignificant(p=.161). 3) The score of hand function was increased from 17 to 20.35 after program, and that was statistically significant(p=.026). 4) The shoulder's ROM(p=.000) and wrist's ROM(p= .004) were significantly increased. According to the results of this study, taping therapy is effective for improving ADL, hand function, ROM, quality of life. However, this study found no significant differences in IADL. Consequently, these findings showed that the taping therapy was effective in improvement of physical aspects(BADL, hand function, upper extremity's ROM) in poststroke-hemiplegic patients.

The Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 18~26
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of inhalation method using essential oils on the preoperative anxiety of hystrectomy patients, and to provide effective and holistic nursing care to them. The research design was a nonequivalent control group non synchronized design. The data were collected from February 1 to March 31, 2002 at D Medical Center in Busan. The subjects were forty one patients that were operated on under general anesthesia for hystrectomy. They were assigned to two groups, twenty one subjects in the experimental group and twenty subjects in the control group. The tool of the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) was used to anxiety on all patients the day before surgery and the preoperative period. Then systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate levels were measured the day before surgery and the preoperative period. The experimental group received two treatments of inhalation method using essential oils of with lavender, ylang ylang, and bergamot oil. The data were analyzed by the
test and the independent t-test. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. Hypothesis 1: It has been supported that the experimental group received inhalation method using essential oils might cause lower level of the preoperative VAS anxiety than that of the control group(t=-2.93, p=.006). 2. Hypothesis 2: It has been rejected that the experimental group received inhalation method using essential oils might cause lower level in the preoperative systolic blood pressure than the control group(t=-.120, p=.905). It has been rejected that the experimental group received inhalation method using essential oils might cause lower level in the preoperative diastolic blood pressure than the control group.(t=1.766, p=.085). 3. Hypothesis 3: It has been supported that the experimental group received inhalation method using essential oils might cause lower level in preoperative pulse rate than the control group(t=5.853, p=.000). According to these results, inhalation method using essential oils can be considered an effective nursing intervention that relieves the preoperative anxiety of hysterectomy patients and stabilizes vital sign partially.

The Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 27~37
During acute stages of hospitalized stroke patients, family caregivers face many challenges. They often experience emotional distress, social isolation, and financial constraints. However, the burden of caregiving of stroke patients in acute stages has never been studied properly. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to the caregivers' burden with acute stroke. The subjects were 123 acute stroke patients and their caregivers who were admitted to neurology and neurosurgery units at Dan Kook University Hospital in Chung-Nam area. An interview was performed with the use of standardized questionnaire which included data pertaining to the patients/caregivers characteristics, caregiver burden (Modified Zarit's Burden Scale), and social support (Personal Resource Questionnaire). Our results showed that the mean burden score was 3.11, indicating high level of burden. Among the sub-domain scores, financial burden was the highest. In univariate analysis, the factors related to caregiver burdens were: inability to communicate between patients and caregiver(p<.001); low cognitive function of the patients(p<.001); low level of ADL(p<.001); the gender of caregiver(p<.001); the current employment status of caregivers(p<.01); the presence of social support for caregiver(p<.001); and the availability of alternative caregivers(p<.001). In multiple regression analysis, social support for family caregivers (87%), low level of patient's cognition (2%), availability of 2nd caregiver (1%), and gender of caregiver (female, 0.4%) were significant explanatory factors of overall burden. The caregivers' burden in acute stages during hospitalization following stroke was high. Recognition of high levels of caregivers' burden and those relating factors affecting caregiver burden may allow us to develop different nursing strategies to unload the level of burden for caregivers in acute stages of stroke.

The Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 38~48
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of a nursing intervention using sensory stimulation in dysphagic patients. Quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. 15 patients of each group were assigned for this study, who were hospitalized in the oriental medicine hospital of K. University. Specific stimulation plans were devised based on a dysfunctional area of the subjects. For each modality, subjects were systematically stimulated for 30 minutes, in the experimental group prior to each meal and 3 times per day for a week. The data were analyzed by SPSS PC program using
-test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The tongue control score of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group(u=52.0, p=.007). 2. The score of chewing ability, lip control, swallowing ability of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group. But no difference is statistically seen between the experimental group and control group. Therefore, this study shows that sensory stimulation using icing, quick stretch, etc., was effective in improving or oropharyngeal function in patients with dysphagia.

Kim, Jeong-Hwa ;
The Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing, volume 5, issue 1, 2002, Pages 60~70
This study was a quasi-experimental study to confirm the effects of a memory training program. The purpose was to develop an effective memory training program for elderly people and to identify the effects of the memory training program. This study was carried out between February 25 and July 20, 1999 and the subjects of the study were 102 elderly people who were participants at a welfare institute in Seoul. The experimental group (51) and the control group (51) were assigned by means of participation order. The control group was matched to the experimental group and was selected considering age, sex, and religion. The experimental group participated in the memory training program. The memory training program was based on the literature of Fogler & Stern (1994), Wang & Lee (1990), Lee (1991) and Lee (1993). The memory training program was given twice a week for two weeks with each program lasting two hours. Depression was measured using the Geriatric Depession Scale developed by Sheikh & Yesavage(1986) and memory self-Efficacy was measured using the Memory Self-Efficacy Scale developed by Berry & Dennehey (1989). Data were analyzed by SPSS PC and the results are described below. 1. The experimental group which participated in the Memory Training Program showed lower depression scores as compared to the control group(t=-4.310, P=.000). 2. The experimental group which participated in the Memory Training Program showed higher higher memory self-efficacy scores as compared to the control group(t=4.354, P=.000). 3. In the experimental group, there was significant negative correlation between the depression scores and memory self-efficacy scores. The results showed that the Memory Training Program is an effective nursing intervention for the elderly with depression and memory problems.

The purpose of study was to find out the relation ship between health perception and health status of clinical nurses. It also identified factors that related to health perception and health status of clinical nurses. The research design was descriptive correlational study. The subjects were consisted of 289 clinical nurses at the university hospital in Pusan. The data were collected from Feb. 12th to Feb. 28th, 2001 by self reporting structured questionnaires. The instruments used for this study were health perception questionnaire developed by Ware and Cornell Medical Index modified by Nam Ho-Chang (1965) for measuring health status. The data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+ program using frequency, percentage, mean, mean mark, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The mean score of the health perception was
(range : 29-145), which the item mean mark score was
(range 1-5). The score of subarea of the health perception was the highest score in health concern (
) and the lowest score in rejection of sick role(
). 2. The mean score of the health status was
(range: 57-114), which the item mean mark score was
(range : 1-2). The mean mark score of the physical health status was
) and the mental health status was
). 3. There were statistically significant difference in the score of health perception according to the presence of disease(F=4.607, P=.011), job satisfaction (F=12.242, P=.000), and job place(F=2.838, P=.038). 4. There were statistically significant difference in the score of health status according to the age(F=3.164, P=.007), presence of leisure time(F=4.308, P=.039), presence of diseases(F=3.215, P=.042), job experience(F=9.064, P=.000), job satisfaction(F=7.182, P=.001), job place (F=5.638, P=.001), job position (F=3.900, P=.021). 5. Health perception of clinical nurse was shown to be positively related to health status(r=.543, p=.000). In conclusion, health perception of clinical nurse working at the university hospital was relatively high, and health status was fine. And the more health perception was high, the more health status was high. Therefore, the health promotion program for clinical nurses, should included health perception.
