Distribution of Dissolved Trace Metals in the Deep Ocean Waters of the East Sea

In order to develop the deep ocean water, the characteristics of vertical distribution of dissolved trace metals(Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were investigated from Apr. to Oct., 2005 in the East Sea. Total six sampling sites were selected in Gangwon-Do and Gyeongsangbuk-Do. Accuracy of the analytical procedures was assessed by the SRM(CASS-4) for dissolved metals in seawater. The mean recoveries cf CASS-4 ranged from 89.4% for Co to 99.8% for Cd. In this study, the dissolved metal concentrations varied with space, time and element. The metal concentrations showed wide range in the surface. Cd, Ni and Zn showed a nutrient-type profile with surface depletion and enrichment at depths. However, Co, Cu and Pb were irregular in the vertical distribution. All metal concentrations studied in this study are lower than the criteria cf Korean drinking water.
A Study on the Pollution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the Surface Sediments Around Gwangyang Bay

PAHs(Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are widespread contaminants in the marine environment. They are of mainly anthropogenic origin from urban runoff, oil spill and combustion of fossil fuels. Some PAHs are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic to aquatic organism The contamination of PAHs in the coastal environments has not been well known yet in Korea. This study was carried out to survey the contamination of PAHs in sediments around Gwangyang bay. The Yeosu petrochemical industrial complex, POSCO(Pohang steel company) and Gwangyang container harbor are located around the bay. PAHs in sediment samples were extracted in soxhlet extractor and were identified and quantified by GC-MS(Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) TOC(Total Organic carbon) and textural parameters in sediment samples were also analyzed 13 species of PAHs were detected at all of the surface sediments. Total PAHs concentrations in the surface sediments ranged from 171.40 to
dry wt.. In most of the surface sediments, Naphthalene was the highest in the range of 14.08 to
dry wt. and Anthracene was the lowest in the range of 0.49 to
dry wt.. The correlation coefficients between individual PAHs and Total PAHs in the surface sediments were relatively higher in the low molecular compounds such as Naphthalene and Phenanthrene. In the relationship of the P/A(Phenanthrene/Anthracene) ratio and F/P(Fluoranthene/Pyrene) ratio, P/A ratio was generally above 10 and F/P ratio was shown to be above 1 in all sediment samples. These data indicate that PAHs in sediments around Gwangyang bay seem to be of both pyrolytic and petrogenic origin. Total PAHs in the surface sediments were correlated with TOC and textural parameters. The values of PAHs in the surface and core sediments were lower than the biological effect guidelines.
The Effect on the Marine Water and Sediment Quality by the Use of Nano-S 2. Result of Field Experiment

The purpose of this study was to observe the effect on the water quality and sediment environment by the use of Nano-S for anti-Red tide material. The experiment was performed at subtidal and intertidal zone during six months(from Aug 2005 to Feb. 2006). The experiment sites were divided with concentration of materials. One is lower concentration(0.1%) and the other is higher concentration(1%). The results of experiments didn't show the remarkable influence of the materials effect before and after applying the Nano-S and the red mud. pH, salinity and DO were slowly increased during experiment period but nutrients were conversely decreased in the seawater. In the subtidal zone, qualities of sediments, IL, AVS and COD, were gradually lowered and the similar results were appeared in the intertidal zone. These results showed similar trends over all the experiment sites including control site. The results of heavy metals also did not show the interest different effect before and after applying the Nano-S and red mud compared with control site.
Effects of Meteorological Factors on Water Temperature, Salinity in the West Sea of Korea

The effect of meteorological factors such as air temperature (AT), wind speed (WS), precipitation (Pre) on the variation of water temperature (WT) and salinity (Sal) in the West Sea of Korea for the period 1971 to 2001 was illustrated. As a result of this study, WT-AT, WT-Pre, and Sal-WS had positive correlation, reversely WT-WS, Sal-AT and Sal- Pre had negative correlation. In the surface layer, time lag between atmospheric factors and oceanographic factors was 0 to 4 months, on the other hand in the bottom layer, it was delayed 0 to 4 months compared to the surface. WT was affected by AT in the same year, but Sal was affected by precipitation in the previous year. The variation of WT and Sal was in harmony with change of wind speed.
A Study on the Variation of Physical & Chemical Properties with Refining Treatment and Additive Mixture for Marine Fuel Oil

Recently it is a tendency that the heavy fuel oil is considered to be used on board even middle or small sized vessels in order to reduce the operating cost of vessel mused by a rise in international oil prices. In this study, analyzed the physical & chemical properties and examined the effect of refining treatment and a fuel oil additive for MF30 fuel oil which is a mixture fuel oil mixed M.G.O and the heavy oil MF380 use to be possible in the middle&small class vessel. As a results, the effects of two of pre-refinery treatment methods as centrifugal purifier and heating & homogenizing system(M.C.H) are some feeble, but the pour point and the flash point came to be low more or less. The effect of property improvement which is mused by the fuel oil additive did not appear positively.
A Study for a Methodology to Analyze Container Delays versus Security

After September 11, 2001, the United State's Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has set up inspection stations in seaport terminals. The inspection station, however, may directly and indirectly affect delay time in the seaports, increasing by especially high and severe level of security. This paper studies for a methodology to analyze container delays versus security incurring by the various layouts of the inspection station in the United States.
A Study on Safety Assessment for Ship Sailing under Electric Power Cable

Many electric power cables span the sea in Korean archipelago. Lots of shipping routes were established between the islands in the same area and ships frequently sail under the cable which cross the seas. Sometimes electric power cables were accidently broken by sailing ships and catastrophic damage of island industry followed thereby. If navigators have detailed knowledge about the height of electric power cable, the ship's sailing condition will be greatly improved. But at the present time, navigators have limited data about the electric power cable. Those are the horizontal distance between pylons, the height of pylons and minimum height of electric power cable. This study introduced the calculating methodology to find out the height of cable at any position between pylons. The ship's tracks were recorded and traffic safety was assessed by statistical method in relation to cable height.
Implementation of Unmanned Aquaculture Security System

This paper describes the implementation procedures and results of Fishery Safety and Security System to secure an aquaculture area from a thief. The system designed with various functional modules to implement selectively available system providing low cost to high cost and simple function to high function according to user's requirement in a practical fishing fields. In the abalone farm field located in Jin island, Jeonranam province and having condensed aquaculture facilities with 50 cages (10 row by 5 column) within 0.5 miles from coast, practical field tests are carried out. As results from that tests, it is found that the system can guard not only the whole area of cultivating farm field but also each cages with detail.
A Study on the Optimal Solar Power System for 10kW Wind Power in the Mokpo Seaside

As the interest in environmental pollution increases, the use of renewable energy is uprising. Among the renewable energy resources, wind and solar energy have no environmental impact and they can be used as unlimited resources. The two power systems are mutual supplementary systems. So the two systems are usually combined for generation. We have measured several data about wind and solar. These data can be used the foundation data for the construction of wind and solar power generation plants. Also we analyzed the possible optimal solar power system for 10[kW] wind power.
The Development of South-Song Period Trade and Perfume - Focusing on the Marine Trade of the South-Song Period -

This article is to investigate the development of seamanship and the art of ship building, marine environment, Silk Road through the sea, and spice exchange at the trade growth of Song Dynasty. For better understanding marine environments, I exemplified what goes before such essential factors as experience and skills in maritime activities. I also demonstrated that South Song Dynasty's abundant economic strength and foreign opening strategy had been supervised systematically through the trade management organization and noted that the nation's overseas exchange had made great effects on its society. The import of the perfume provided the cause where the western influence occupies the orient in the same time when it is a keychains of the orient and the western interchange. For this reason, perfume, which once contributed 1/20 of the revenue, enlarged its portion to 1/10 of the revenue. This indicates the influence of perfume on the national finance in the Song period
Study on the Sediment Quality in Bottom Water (I)

Particle materials sink in bottom and dissolved inorganic substances release from sediment and many kinds of materials continuously exchange in sediment and water column as well as transfer and transformation in sediment. The study of sediment quality means the state of sediment pollution relation of the water quality, sediment biota, materials fluxes between sediment and water column, transformation of materials in sediment is being important in recent. The state of sediment quality imply that the history of water pollution for long time, because the sediment quality does not change temporally. The sediment quality of bottom water can be used as a good indicator of pollution at present and in future. The major index of sediment qualities are the content of nutrients and hazard materials such as metals, Ignition Loss (IL), Total Sulfur (TS), Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), sediment COD, color, odor and the release of nutrients from sediment. However, there are some arguments between researchers about compare to estimation of sediment quality and sampling and analysis of sediment. In this study, I will introduce the method of sediment sampling, analyzing and estimating of the sediment pollution.
