Numerical Simulation of Upwelling Appearance near the Southeastern Coast of Korea

To investigate the appearance of cold water by upwelling effect near Ulsan-Gampo of the southeastern coast in Korea on June, 1999, we carried out a numerical experiment by 3-dimensional diagnostic numerical model. Appearance of cold water by the result of numerical experiment was due to upwelling by wind effect at 50-100m depth near Ulsan-Gampo coast. This result was mused by using a model to 2 times of existing wind magnitude near Busan, Ulsan and Gampo that is 5.0m/sec wind. Therefore, to illustrate the phenomenon of extraordinary marine environment like upwelling event and so forth, appropriate wind data at sea should be used instead of those on land.
Effect of Nano Particles on Fertilized Egg of Crossostrea gigas

A Nano particle is a small particle with at least one dimension less than 100 nm Nanoparticle is currently used in an area cf intense scientific research, due to a wide variety cf potential applications in biomedical, optical, and electronic fields. In order to know the biological effect of the nine Nano particles on fertilized egg of Crassostrea gigas experiments were performed Development rates of control (free Nano particles) C. gigas to a particular larval stage (D-shape) was 78%. Development rate of C gigas to a parcicular larval stage (D-shape) after 24 hours exposure to 0.05ppm of AGZ020, Nano silver, P-25 and SnO were 22%, 52%, 58% and 76%, respectively. However, all fertilized eggs were destructed within 8 hours afters exposure to 20ppm of respective particles. On the other hand, All fertilized eggs were not affected after 24 hours respective exposure to 0.05ppm of In, Sb, Sn, Zn, and Ag-
particles. However, development rates of C. gigas after 24 hours exposure to 20ppm of In, Sb, Sn, Zn, Ag-
were 57%, 60%, 50%, 65%, and 64% respectively.
Experiments and Numerical Analysis on a System for Collecting Organic Sediment from Seabed

Contaminated sediments are the actual cause for deterioration of coastal-ecosystem. So the developed countries have been in the process of making an effort to develop new techniques for monitoring and solving this problem since 1960. In this research, suction type pump dredging system of pilot size for collecting the filth from the seabed has been designed and manufactured that can prevent or minimize the secondary pollution by filth diffusion. For the practical use, the application possibility of the developed system has been checked through a system performance test. And, the evaluation of system performance according to the underwater body type has been carried out for system optimization by using CFD. The performance tests for checking the efficiency of sediment collecting system are done under two conditions i.e. when the system is non-operational and when the system is self-propelled. The results of this research showed the possibility of the development of dredging system to remove just the upper parts of filth from seabed.
A Study on the Flow Characteristics around Underwater Triangular Structure

Triangular structure is used as basic shape of artificial structures for generating the upwelling current in order to make rich fishing ground at sea. Artificial upwelling current could bring the deep sea water containing a lot of nutrients from the bottom up to the surface. The purpose of this study is to examine the flow characteristics around underwater triangular structure with various stratification parameter. An experimental study was carried out for the triangular structure model in the circulating water channel to investigate flow characteristics by flow visualization method. A velocity fields around the underwater structure were measured by particle image velocimetry(PIV). The experimental results showed that the upwelling effect at the back and upper region of the structure could be best when the water depth was 2 times of the structure height and the stratification parameter was approximately 3.0. These quantitative data will be useful to determine the functional efficiency cf artificial upwelling structures.
Effective Coastal Water Quality Management and Marine Environmental Impact Assessment

This study examined principles and techniques of efficient water quality management as well as total coastal pollutant loads and the relevant examples in the advanced countries from the viewpoints of water quality improvement and pollution control in coastal areas. The problems and improvements in an estimation of the current total pollutant loads were also pointed out. In addition, discussion was made on the relationship between total pollutant loads and environmental capacity as well as particulars requiring extensive examination on access to and study on water quality model used as prediction tool for marine environment. Furthermore, this study proposed details of and improvement plans for water quality control to be reflected and absorbed into systems and policies related to coastal water quality. In coastal areas, which are subject to total coastal pollutant loads, it is necessary to calculate pollutant loads reduction and allocation, to propose them in detail in statement in relations to new pollution sources for the corresponding projects or plans in environmental impact assessment and prior environmental review system. Also, in relations to regional plans for coastal management, the local government concerned must focus more on environmental management plan to implement data on pollution sources and pollutant loads flown into sea areas under basic jurisdiction, therefore it is required to actively respond to expansion and introduction of total coastal pollutant loads system in the future. Total coastal pollutant loads system must be expanded and executed by considering characteristics of sea area and changes in the environment of land. For pollution sources in land, the competent authorities in charge of coastal environment will need to initiatively administer supervision, monitoring activities and achieve integration and operation of the related laws by preparing legal bases for management system or adjusting the related laws.
A Study on the Development of Marine Detector Using Nano-technology

It is generally recognized that monitering of bio-molecules, which are related to the ocean environment, becomes more important. So far, for the detection of the bio-molecules, ocean samples were brought to laboratory to be analyzed using a complicate and expensive measuring system The "ship and dip" method takes a relatively long time to complete a analysis cycle and causes significant errors due to the time difference between the analysis processes. In order to overcome the drawbacks, developments of sensors for the detection of bio-molecules were suggested using nano-technology, such as nano-spintronic device, carbon nano tube device, and nano-semiconductors. The pros and cons of the technology were examined and reinvestigated to overcome the technical problems in the application to real sensors.
A Systematic Approach to Decide Maximum Berthing Ship Size Coupled with Berth Design Criteria - A Case of Port of Ulsan -

"Summer Deadweight Tonnage(SDWT)" is used as the criteria of the berthing capacity when establishing port entry limits under current guideline. The important factors affecting to the maximum ship size of possible berthing are mass, length and breath of the ship rather than deadweight. Therefore this guideline should be modified to ensure safety and efficient operation of berth. This study aimed to propose a rational guideline to adjust the berthing capacity. In order to decide proper berthing capacity, three berths of Port of Ulsan were selected and systematic evaluations for the safety of passage transit, berthing maneuvers, ship motions at berth and stabilities of structures were conducted. Small changes of ship size had little effect on those characteristics and little significant differences were found according to the increase of ship size at the same displacement. The evaluation results of the increasement of 50% of berthing capacity at 20,000 DWT, 25% at 40,000 DWT and 13% at 150,000 DWT were within the design criteria in which the berths were built. Therefore, if the channel width, diameter of turning circle, berth length and mooring arrangements are satisfied with the criteria, the current berth limitations should be adjusted by the displacement. as substitute for the deadweight.
A Study on the Role of Communication in Disaster Management in Modern Societies

In these days, not only many peoples were killed or wounded by seismic sea waves in Indonesia, but also our country is influenced by disasters such as tsunami and earthquake happened in sea areas adjacent to japan. The precaution against disaster and the rapid communication of disaster informations have become important. In order to minimize and prevent citizens' properties and lives from the loss or the damage by natural calamities suas storms, earthquakes and typhoons, the establishment of communication network for rapid information transmission and the development of system for preventing citizens from disasters should be performed.
A Study on Design of Emergency Anchorage at Adjacent Waters of Wan-do Port

Now it is said that the insufficency of the designated anchorage for ships in approaching waters of Wan-do port is the one of reasons for marine safety accidents, when vessels encounter rough weather near the port. This research examined geographical feature in approaching areas of Wan-do port and suggested appropriate weather anchorage. The situations of fishing nets areas were investigated Marine vessel traffic flow was also examined. Through these research the optimal anchorage was suggested in the approaching waters of Wan-do port.
A Study on Danger Degree Analysis for the Adjacent Waterway of Main Ports in the Korean Southern Area

The main ports of Korean south sea are exposed to intensive danger as 58.1% of total vessel in Korea waters and 62.9% of total dangerous cargo ships. Therefore, it is required to establish fundamental database to solve numerous issues at the main ports cf the south sea as studying amount of the vessel traffic and their flows into the main ports, and evaluating degree of danger by traffics environmental stress model as analyzing relationships among degree of danger, maritime accident, and number of vessel arriving or departing in the main ports.
A Study on the Fatigue Investigation Program for Marine Accidents

Recently, fatigue related to marine accidents was recognized to be very important contribution factor when marine accidents such as collision, aground, fire, etc. were investigated Many studies concerned about fatigue factors related to human error can be found. In this study, the analysis and examination of USCG Fatigue Investigation Program were carried out in order to investigate marine accidents happened in Korean waters. The Fatigue Investigation Program was established on the MAIFA(Marine Accident Investigators Forum in Asia) web site. Finally, the application plan of the program was discussed.
Effects of Biodiesel Fuel on Characteristics of Specific Fuel Consumption and Exhaust Emissions in DI Diesel Engine - Using Rape Oil -

We have a lot of interest in alternative fuels to provide energy independence from oil producing country and to reduce exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may be used as fuel without change of engine structure in diesel engine of compression ignition engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine. Especially this biodisel was produced from rape oil at our laboratory by ourselves. This study showed that specific fuel consumption and NOx emission were slightly increased, on the other hand CO emission and Soot were tolerably decreased more in the case of biodiesel blends than neat diesel oil.
Effect of Stiffener's Web Height against Axial Compression Ultimate Strength Considering Lateral Pressure Load

Stiffened panels are basic strength members which have been used widely in a vessel or an offshore. They have been used often a deck, a side and a bottom structure of ship and have a number of one sided stiffener in either one or both directions called grillage. Their buckling and plastic collapse become damaged reason of the hull girder so it needs to investigate accurately buckling and ultimate strength of stiffened panels. In the present paper, using the ANSYS, a commercial finite element analysis code, we conducted the evaluation regarding buckling and post-buckling behaviour of stiffened panels, and analyzed stiffener's web height change, considering the effect of lateral pressure load against compression ultimate strength.
