Characteristics of Metal Concentration in the Organs of Minke Whale Entangled from the Eastern Coast of Korea

To determine the concentration of trace metals in the tissues of whale from the coastal ocean of Korea, we measured the concentration of trace metals (Cu, Cd, Pb, As, Zn and Hg) in the organs (liver, intestine, muscle, epidermis and blubber) of minke whale entangled from the eastern coast of Korea in 2009. The highest and lowest concentrations of Cu, Cd, Zn, and Hg were found in the liver and blubber, respectively. In contrast, the highest and lowest concentration of As was found in the blubber and muscle, respectively. The accumulation trend of trace metals in the organs of minke whales was in the order Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Hg > Cd. The concentrations of Cu, As and Zn in liver and epidermic were higher in male than in female, whereas the concentrations of Cu and Pb in intestine and muscle were higher in female than in male. The mature individuals of minke whale were much higher Cd in liver, Cd and Hg in muscle, As and Hg in epidermic and blubber, Cd, As and Hg in intestine than immature individuals of minke whale.
Seawater Temperature Variation at Aquafarms off Wando in the Southwest Coast of Korea

Abalone culture is one of important coastal fisheries off Wando in the southeast coast of Korea. Since cage culture for abalones was popularized, Understanding of temperature variation, which is important to raise abalones and to prevent their mass mortalities, is necessary. We analyzed temperature data from 2005 to 2009 obtained at Sinji-do and Cheongsan-do off Wando. Sinji-do, which is relatively close to land, had yearly wide range of temperature and rate of temperature variation. It is likely to be caused by heating of solar radiation in summer and cooling in winter at the shallow area. Rate of temperature variation in autumn was higher than that in spring. In summer short term variation of temperature corresponding tidal period was distinguished clearly. Diurnal temperature range, abrupt temperature change, was larger open sea. Comparison between temperatures of two stations and favorable raising conditions of abalones showed that Cheongsan-do, located out to sea, appears to be more appropriate than Sinji-do.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as naphthalene, are released into the aquatic environment and have been identified as endocrine effects on marine organisms. Comparison of Material Flux at the Sediment-Water Interface in Marine Finfish and Abalone Cage Farms, Southern Coast of Korea: In-situ and Laboratory Incubation Examination

It is necessary to study the material circulation of coastal ecosystem according to aquacultural activity in order to induce the sustainable production of aquaculture and the fishery environment for the useful use. Hence, it is essential to make an exact assessment for the sedimentation release flux at the sediment-water interface in the aquafarm. Sediment oxygen demand and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were compared using in-situ and laboratory incubational examination. Sediment oxygen demands were 116, 34, and

We compared the material flux at the sediment-water interface of each farm and the characteristics between two different kinds of material flux examination.
Estimation of Annual Energy Production Based on Regression Measure-Correlative-Predict at Handong, the Northeastern Jeju Island

Wind resource assessment is necessary when designing wind farm. To get the assessment, we must use a long term(20 years) observed wind data but it is so hard. so that we usually measured more than a year on the planned site. From the wind data, we can calculate wind energy related with the wind farm site. However, it calculate wind energy to collect the long term data from Met-mast(Meteorology Mast) station on the site since the Met-mast is unstable from strong wind such as Typhoon or storm surge which is Non-periodic. To solve the lack of the long term data of the site, we usually derive new data from the long term observed data of AWS(Automatic Weather Station) around the wind farm area using mathematical interpolation method. The interpolation method is called MCP(Measure-Correlative-Predict). In this study, based on the MCP Regression Model proposed by us, we estimated the wind energy at Handong site using AEP(Annual Energy Production) from Gujwa AWS data in Jeju. The calculated wind energy at Handong was shown a good agreement between the predicted and the measured results based on the linear regression MCP. Short term AEP was about 7,475MW/year. Long term AEP was about 7,205MW/year. it showed an 3.6% of annual prediction different. It represents difference of 271MW in annual energy production. In comparison with 20years, it shows difference of 5,420MW, and this is about 9 months of energy production. From the results, we found that the proposed linear regression MCP method was very reasonable to estimate the wind resource of wind farm.
Analysis on the Results of Fatigue Survey for Marine Officers

Fatigue is known to detrimentally affect a person`s performance. Also, fatigue may reduce effectiveness and efficiency of marine officers and crew members. The purpose of this research is to understand on the status of the marine officers` fatigue. In this study, we carried out the questionnaire survey which is related to the marine officers` fatigue factors such as work, sleep and rest hour or period, sleepiness, casual factor, fatigue symptom, etc. The questionnaire contained 25 questions and it was distributed among 1,033 marine officers(deck officers 607 and engineers 426). The results of this survey show that marine officers` fatigue is a casual factor in marine accidents such as collisions, groundings and there was a fatigue difference between deck officers and engineers.
Method on the Effective Onboard Training and Guidance for Apprentice Engineer Officers in the Training Ship - The Case of Mokpo National Maritime University -

The aim of onboard training of apprentice engineers in the training ship is to support and enhance fundamental knowledge and ability to have both theoretical and practical skills. This diversity in education and training improve the capability to handle problems in a crisis and build-up the feeling of confidence so they can effectively accomplish their assigned tasks in special circumstance like those onboard. Therefore this study suggests some remedies for qualitative improvement and guidance of onboard training ship for apprentice engineers to achieve the aims of onboard training to foster talented marine engineer officers with professional knowledge and leadership.
A Study on the Effective Teaching Method for Bridge Resource Management in Korea

In 2010 the Manila Amendments established the highest practicable standards for officers and engineers. This amendments includes knowledge, understanding, skills, and proficiency required for a deck officer in terms of the BRM (Bridge Resource Management) to reduce human errors, stated in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Cerification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This paper proposes a proper direction to improve BRM education program in Korea. In relation to the BRM program, its contents and education method were analyzed through the satisfactions survey for cadets and the experienced officers. As a consequence, this research gives several suggestions to improve the current BRM course.
Evaluation on Damage Behavior of Al-4.5%Mg-0.6%Mn Al Alloy with Potentiostatic Experiment Time

In general, aluminum alloys forms the passive film(
) in neutral solution. However, the passive film created on the surface will be destroyed by chloride ions contained in sea water so the corrosion will occur. In this study, in order to solve the problem of corrosion under a seawater environment, potentiostatic protection techniques were applied to Al-4.5%Mg-0.6%Mn aluminum alloy in seawater. At polarization experiments, active state were observed at anodic polarization and concentration polarization by reduction of dissolves oxygen and activation polarization were found at anodic polarization. As a results of potentiostatic experiment, calcareous deposit were created much more as applying time increase from the turning point of the concentration polarization and activation polarization and crevice corrosion was partially observed between calcareous deposit and surface of base metal. Overall potentiostatic anodic polarization experiment was difficult to apply potentiostatic corrosion protection technology by occurrence of active state, whereas potentiostatic cathodic polarization experiment examined optimum corrosion protection condition of -1.1 V~-0.75 V within the range of concentration polarization considered various applying time.
Hydrodynamic-Structural Response Coupling Analysis to a Rectangle Floating Structures

Structures floating in the ocean experience various kinds of external loads, among which wave load is considered as determining factor in structural design. Its relative size compared with wavelength may be used to classify whether the structure is relatively small or large. Traditionally, the small structures are assumed to have little diffraction and the wave loads on large structure are usually calculated by only considering inertia force according to diffraction. In this paper, rectangular floating structures usually used in the ocean, river, and lake are used to find the relationship between hydrodynamic forces and its structural response.
A Study on the Development of Marine Fuel Oil Homogenizer for Fuel Costs Saving

In this study, we have conducted a work on homogenizer development which is operated by high shearing force generated by stator and rotor inside it. To investigate the performance for homogenization and atomization of homogenizer, Bunker-C (IFO 380 cSt) was used as a fuel for experiment. Pre-treatment of bunker-C was carried out with homogenizer developed in this study. Oil purifier was used to investigate effect of oil sludge reduction after pre-treatment. Experimental result showed that the amount of sludge of fuel oil after pre-treatment with homogenizer has decreased by 13 %. To confirm combustion efficiency, Bunker-C which have pre-treatment with homogenizer and purified after are burned in boiler system. The result showed that CO concentration in exhaust gas was decreased. These results mean that if the homogenizer which is developed in this study for marine fuel oil is applied on real vessels, oil costs and operating costs can be reduced.
A Experimental Study on the Effect of Increasing Rudder Force on Turning Ability of Short Sea Shipping Ship

Recently, a vessel`s maneuvering performance is considered to be an important subject to secure safety at short sea shipping. Especially the high turning performance, which is required to avoid the marine pollution by the ships that was grounded, becomes more severe. In this paper, we discuss the effect of increasing rudder force on turning performance of short sea shipping ship by free running test in towing tank. First of all, we make the 47K PC model ship and high-lift rudder using Coanda effect. And we make the free running test system for the turning test in towing tank. And also we perform the turing test of 47K PC model in several changes of Coanda jet momentum and evaluate the turing performance such as advance and tactical diameter. Finally, we confirm that the increasing of rudder force is very effective to improvement of turning performance of short sea shipping ship.
Characteristics of Resistance Performance on Tugboat in Still Water and Waves

It is necessary to accurately evaluate the resistance performance and estimate the towing power of a tugboat for safety towing operation at actual seas. In this study, we have carried out the model tests firstly to investigate the resistance performance and flow characteristics around the tugboat in still water. The experiments are performed in infinite depth in circulation tank using 1/33.75 scaled model from 5kts to 10kts(designed speed 7kts) considering the effect of adverse and favorable current. Then the numerical calculations are executed to analyze the response amplitude operator and added resistance on tugboat due to the waves. The results obtained by the present computation are compared with the those acquired from the experiments in still water. As a result, it is noted that the added resistance become larger at head sea and higher speed conditions. We can also observe that the EHP increase 70 percent in comparison with those in still water.
A Study on the Selection of Subject Vessel for Development of Oil Recovery Equipment for Small Vessel

Our country has experienced some difficulties with clean up operation of massive marine oil pollution due to the lack of oil spill response equipments. And there was the case that a fishing vessel performed clean up operation had not received any proper payments because of its inefficient oil spill response operation. Thus, it is important to develop an efficient oil recovery equipment for small vessel and adopt it as a part of oil pollution prevention policy. These efforts could prepare oil spill response equipment in advance and use a fishing vessel registered in the affected area by massive marine oil pollution. Therefore, this study examines and adopts a suitable subject vessels as a first step for developing oil recovery system fitting with small vessels for national use.
A Study on the Flow Characteristics around Tidal Current Turbine

All the countries in the world is currently facing the full scale of energy-climate era currently, and making strong energy policy that will lead to green growth of the future energy resources by utilizing renewable energy as the basis of entering the advanced country becomes the goal of development that satisfies the demand for energy in 21st century. Recently, ocean energy attracted the attention along with the necessity of developing renewable energy. Ocean energy is the one of most prominent recyclable and clean resources that has not been developed yet. So, it is highly required to develop good tidal current energy conversion system in coastal area. The inflow angle that acts against tidal current turbine, seabed effect and the change of efficiency along the occurrence of cavitation were investigated through the wake flow characteristics in this study. Power coefficient degradation by seabed effect did not appear in the condition of this calculation. Efficiency degradation appeared from above
regarding inflow angle and power coefficient was calculated as lower by 7 % at
. Torque and power coefficient increased as inflow velocity rose, but power coefficient degradation appeared from above 3m/s when the cavitation happened. So, it was recognized that the larger inflow angle and occurrence of cavitation become the reason for power degradation through the flow characteristics.
A Study on Domestic Policy Framework for Application of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage(CCS)

This study examines the current status and policy development of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage(CCS), which is a technology to mitigate climate change, in Korea and foreign countries. It also analyzes IEA CCS regulatory framework as a guideline and provides limitations and implications for marine geological storage in the Republic of Korea. Although CCS master plan is established at national level, related laws are not amended and detailed polices are not yet provided. Established `Intergovernmental CCS committee` lacks its cooperative mechanism and flexibility. Only limited and segmented economic analyses are performed and funding for large scale of CCS project is not secured. In addition, information sharing is limited and public awareness activities are insufficient. Therefore, this paper provides some policy suggestions on establishing a legal framework based on the `Marine Environmental Management Act`, strengthening the role of intergovernmental CCS committee, conducting CCS economic analysis based on various scenarios, providing economic incentives and public participation strategies, and establishing a specialized agency for information sharing.
