Sonh Seung-Il ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 629~637
Currently the research on input-queued ATM switches is one of the most active research fields. Many achievements have been made in the research on scheduling algorithms for input-queued ATM switches and also applied in commerce. The scheduling algorithms have the characteristics of improving throughput, satisfying QoS requirements and providing service fairly. In this paper, we studied on an implementation of scheduler which arbirates the input-queued ATM switches efficiently and swiftly. The proposed scheduler approximately provides 100% throughput for scheduling. The proposed algorithm completes the arbitration for N-port VOQ switch with 4-iterative matching. Also the proposed algorithm has a merit for implementing the scheduling algorithm with 1/2 area compared to that of iSLIP scheduling algorithm which is widely used. The performance of the proposed scheduling algorithm is superior to that of iSLIP in 4-iterative matching. The proposed scheduling algorithm was implemented in FPGA and verified on board-level.
Anti-Collision Protocol with Stop Signal in RFID Systems
Lim In-Taek ; Choi Jin-Oh ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 638~644
In this paper, a QT_ss protocol is proposed for identifying all the tags within the identification range. The proposed QT_ss protocol revises the QT protocol, which has a memoryless property. In the QT_ss protocol, the tag will send all the bits of their identification codes when the query string matches the first bits of their identification codes. While the tags are sending their identification codes, if the reader detects a collision bit, it will send a signal to the tags to stop sending. According to the simulation results, the QT_ss protocol outperforms the QT protocol in terms of the number of response bits.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 645~651
This paper discusses computer system performance evaluation and analysis by employing a simulator which able to execute a symmetric multiprocessor in machine simulation environment. We also perform a multiprocessor system analysis using SPLASH-2, which is a suite of multi-program benchmarks for multiprocessors, to perform the behavior study of the symmetric multiprocessor OS kernel, IRIX5.3. To validate the scalability of symmetric multiprocessor system, we demonstrate structure and evaluation methods for symmetric multiprocessor as well as a functionality-based software simulator, SimOS. In this paper, we examine cache miss count and stall time on the symmetric multiprocessor between the local instruction and local data, using the multi-program benchmarks such as RADIX sorting algorithm and Cholesky factorization.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 652~658
This paper deals with an electronic ballast for hish intensity short-arc discharge lamps, which consists of a boost converter, a step down converter operated as a current source with power regulation and a low frequency inverter with external ignition circuit The ignition circuit generates high voltage pulses of 130[Hz] up to 5 [kV]. A reignition circuit is equipped in the ballast, and it operates the lamp at a regular interval for protection when an ignition fails. Acoustic resonance phenomenon was eliminated by operating a low frequency square wave voltage and current. The measured lamp voltage, current and consumption power were 123.8 [V], 8.1 [A] and 1,002 [W], respectively. From the experiment, we confirmed that the prototype ballast operates the lamp with a constant power.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 659~666
Servo-motors are used as key components of automated system by performing precise motion control as accurate positioning and accurate speed regulation in response to the commands from computers and sensors. Especially, the linear brushless servo-motors have numerous advantages over the rotary servo motors which have connection with the friction induced transfer mechanism such as ball screws, timing belts, rack/pinion. This paper proposes an estimation method of unknown motor system parameters using the informations from the sinusoidal driving type linear brushless DC motor dynamics and outputs. The estimated parameters can be used to tune the controller gain and a disturbance observer. In order to meet this purpose high performance Digital Signal Processor, TMS320F240, designed originally for implementation of a Field Oriented Control(FOC) technology is adopted as a controller of the liner BLDC servo motor. Having A/D converters, PWM generators, rich I/O port internally, this servo motor application specific DSP play an important role in servo motor controller. This linear BLDC servo motor system also contains IPM(Intelligent Power Module) driver and hail sensor type current sensor module, photocoupler module for isolation of gate signals and fault signals.

A study on hand gesture recognition using 3D hand feature
Bae Cheol-Soo ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 674~679
In this paper a gesture recognition system using 3D feature data is described. The system relies on a novel 3D sensor that generates a dense range mage of the scene. The main novelty of the proposed system, with respect to other 3D gesture recognition techniques, is the capability for robust recognition of complex hand postures such as those encountered in sign language alphabets. This is achieved by explicitly employing 3D hand features. Moreover, the proposed approach does not rely on colour information, and guarantees robust segmentation of the hand under various illumination conditions, and content of the scene. Several novel 3D image analysis algorithms are presented covering the complete processing chain: 3D image acquisition, arm segmentation, hand -forearm segmentation, hand pose estimation, 3D feature extraction, and gesture classification. The proposed system is tested in an application scenario involving the recognition of sign-language postures.
Character Shape Distortion Correction of Camera Acquired Document Images
Jang Dae-Geun ; Kim Eui-Jeong ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 680~686
Document images captured by scanners have only skewing distortion. But camera captured document images have not only skew but also vignetting effect and geometric distortion. Vignetting effect, which makes the border areas to be darker than the center of the image, make it difficult to separate characters from the document images. But this effect has being decreased, as the lens manufacturing skill is developed. Geometric distortion, occurred by the mismatch of angle and center position between the document image and the camera, make the shape of characters to be distorted, so that the character recognition is more difficult than the case of using scanner. In this paper, we propose a method that can increase the performance of character recognition by correcting the geometric distortion of document images using a linear approximation which changes the quadrilateral region to the rectangle one. The proposed method also determine the quadrilateral transform region automatically, using the alignment of character lines and the skewed angles of characters located in the edges of each character line. Proposed method, therefore, can correct the geometric distortion without getting positional information from camera.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 687~692
In a conventional ICA(Independent Component Analysis) based face recognition method, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) first is used for feature extraction, ICA learning method then is applied for feature enhancement in the reduced dimension. It is not considered that a necessary component can be located in the discarded feature space. In the new ICA(NICA), learning extracts features using the magnitude of kurtosis (4-th order central moment or cumulant). But, the pure ICA method can not discard noise effectively. The synergy effect of PCA and ICA can be achieved if PCA is used for noise reduction filter. Namely, PCA does whitening and noise filtering. ICA performs feature extraction. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the new ICA method compared to the conventional ICA approach
Development of Automatic Airborne Image Orthorectification Using GPS/INS and LIDAR Data
Jang Jae-Dong ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 693~699
Digital airborne image must be precisely orthorectified to become geographical information. For orthorectification of airborne images, GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System) and LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) elevation data were employed. In this study, 635 frame airborne images were produced and LIDAR data were converted to raster image for applying to image orthorectification. To derive images with constant brightness, flat field correction was applied to images. The airborne images were geometrically corrected by calculating internal orientation and external orientation using GPS/INS data and then orthorectified using LIDAR digital elevation model image. The precision of orthorectified images was validated by collecting 50 ground control points from arbitrary five images and LIDAR intensity image. As validation result, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) was 0.387 as almost same as only two times of pixel spatial resolution. It is possible that this automatic orthorectification method of airborne image with higher precision is applied to airborne image industry.

Choi Hyun ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 700~705
The latest system of GIS has been changing from 2 dimension to 3 dimension. According to the rapid growth of the fields linked to 3D GIS, 3D GIS has variously affected the public field, the national defense field. and the industrial field. This study estimated sight distance safety of curve section considering the environmental impact based on 3D GIS. Sight distance is calculated from the relation between road which keeps the three-dimension character and driver gaze, so it needs to consider both plane and vertical for the accurate measuring. This study made analysis of the sight distance through considering the environmental impact with driving simulation of design speed 80km/h and running speed 60-120km/h.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 712~717
In this paper, a new integral imaging method with horizontal parallax only is proposed by modified use of elemental images pickuped from conventional integral imaging. The modified elemental images are obtained by magnifying single horizontal elemental image vertically and from which 3D images could be reconstructed. The proposed method can provide us large reduction of transmission information data for elemental images by eliminating the vertical parallax. The feasibility of our approach is experimentally demonstrated and its results are presented.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 718~723
Optical module plays an important role in the construction of high speed communication network. Laser diode is a component of optical module, and its characteristics are dependent of temperature, so many researches are reported. In this paper, we proposed the electrical equivalent circuit of PBH-LD based on the rate equations. And, the two leakage paths exit outside the active region. One path is converted pn-diode and the other path is converted two transistors using npn-Tr and pnp-Tr. In order to reduce the leakage currents, we observed the dependence of carrier concentrations of current blocking layers using PSPICE simulator.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 724~730
The earth resistance is a essential basic factor of the performance of the earth. The earth enables system to be operated in a stable way not only against thunderbolts, unexpected transitional currents, the inflow of voltages and electric noises but also protect human life from electric shocks. In a domestic case, there is a technique criterion about earth technique but it falls short of reality since the content is very limitted, which causes a lot of problems to establish communications facilities. This paper gives the results through actual measurement or the earth resistance as reffered date in a way to improve these problems.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 739~743
In this paper, development of voice activated Universal Remote Control using the Neural Networks. A speaker dependent system is developed to operate for a single speaker. These systems are usually easier to develop, cheaper to buy and more accurate, but not as flexible as speaker adaptive or speaker independent systems. A speaker independent system is developed to operate for any speaker of a particular type (e.g. American English). These systems are the most difficult to develop, most expensive and accuracy is lower than speaker dependent systems. However, they are more flexible. A speaker adaptive system is developed to adapt its operation to the characteristics of new speakers. It's difficulty lies somewhere between speaker independent and speaker dependent systems. This paper is developed Speaker Adaptation using the Neural Networks.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 744~751
Even many kinds of Internet-based services have been generated due to the great development of the Internet. PSTN still exists in the center of the national infrastructure network and the transit exchanges will be maintained the core roles in PSTN for many years in the future. These transit exchanges often suffer from unexpected overload situation because they have to process Intelligent Network calls and mobile calls additionally as well as POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). In this paper, we suggest an efficient overload control algorithm for the distributed transit switching system under the various types of call services. We also show that this algorithm can be implemented easily cooperating with the network management control functions. The simulation technique is used to show that the proposed algorithm effectively controls calls and maintains safely the call processor's load under the various kinds of overload situations.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 752~757
In the case of the requirement of high speed transmission, OFDM is a powerful technique employed in communications systems suffering from frequency selective fading. In this paper, we apply an optimal adaptive bitloading algorithm technique. The BER performance of the fixed-rate SISO and adaptive SISO is simulated. Specially, we can decompose the MIMO channel into the SISO channel by making use of the singular value decomposition(SVD) assuming channel knowledge in a multipath environment. As a results of simulation, we confirmed that the BER enhancement of MIMO-OFDM system with the bitloadins algorithm was superior to the SISO-OFDM system.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 758~763
In various fields of basic science and engineering, in order to present signals and systems exactly and acquire useful information from spatial and timely changes, many researches have been processed. In these methods, the Fourier transform which represents signal as the combination of the frequency component has been applied to the most fields. But as transform not to consider time information, the Fourier transform has its limitations of application. To overcome this problem, a variety of methods including the wavelet transform have been proposed. As transform to represent signal by using the changing window, according to scale parameter in time-scale domain, the wavelet transform is capable of multiresolution analysis and defines various functions according to the application environments. In this paper, to detect features of signal we analyzed wavelet the spectrum by using the basis function of the fourier transform.

A Study on Adopting Symmetric Control System in Active Suspension Equipment
Park Jung-Hyen ; Kim Soon-Ho ;
Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 769~774
This paper proposed a theoretic numerical modelling in control system design to analyze active suspension equipment by adopting minimum phase system theory. Recent in the field of suspension system design it is general to adopt active control scheme for stiffness and damping, and connection with other vehicle stability control equipment is also intricate, it is required for control system scheme to design more robust, higher response and precision control equipment. Transfer matrices of system with collocated sensors and actuators are symmetric. The symmetry is independent of the entities of mass, damping, or stiffness matrices, and is a non parametric nature. From this point of view, symmetric robust control system is analyzed and designed in this paper. Numerical example is shown for validity of robust control system design.

Journal of the Korea Institute of Information and Communication Engineering, volume 10, issue 4, 2006, Pages 775~782
We generated blocks from the direction-extracted fingerprint during the pre-process of the fingerprint recognition algorithm and performed training by using the direction minutiae of each block as the input pattern of the neural network, so that we extracted the core points to use in the matching. Based on this, we designed the fingerprint recognition embedded system and tested it using the control board and the serial communication to utilize it for a variety of application systems. As a result, we can verify the reliance satisfactorily
